[" Direcrory.] 1858.TORONTO.761 TORONTO, C.W.—The Metropolis of Upper Canada, is situated on the north-west shore of Lake Ontario, facing a very gpacious Bay, or heautiful sheet of water, somewhat oval in form.The City is laid out in the form of a parallelogram, with singular regularity, the streets intersecting each other at right angles.Owing to the banks of the Lake being low and the site of the City rather flat, Toronto presents at a distance no striking aspect from any of its approaches.On nearing it from the Lake, however, it gradually unfolds itself, till, passing through the narrow entrance of the Harbor and steaming up the Bay, the Provincial Lunatic Asylum, Trinity College (Episcopal), the Parliament Houses, and other buildings come full into view.The domes and spires of the churches and public buildings in the background, give the City a very picturesque and imposing appearance.When finished, the projected Esplanade will greatly improve the front view from the Lake and Harbor (which it encroaches upon and faces), and, with its lines of quays and parallel lines of railway, will present a striking and animated scene.King and Yonge are the two principal streets: the former runs parallel with the Bay and the latter, intersecting it, extends northward, through a rich and prosperous agricultural country, forming a sort o irregular village of upwards of thirty miles in length.King—the Ozford street or Broadway of Toronto, a very long, straight, and spacious street, with its broad sidewalks, and many handsome, well-filled shops—is the fashionable business resort, the great thoroughfare and promenade.The public buildings of the City are very numerous, and many of them extremely handsome; such, for instance, as the new General Hospital, St.James’s, St.Michael's, Zion, and Knox’s Churches, the City Hall, 8t.Lawrence Market, Nordheimer’s Music Hall, the Exchange, Mechanies’ Institute, Post Office, City Schools, several of the Banks, the Rossin House, &c.; and especially the Normal and Model Schools,—a spacious edifice, whose organisation and methods of instruction, though not long established, have produced a most beneficial change in academical government and tuition, which is rapidly making itself felt for good throughout the whole Province.Osgoode Hall, the seat of the Superior Courts of Law and Equity for Upper Canada, situated on Queen street, nearly opposise York street; the University of Toronto, and University College, standing retired amid the sequestered retreats of the University Park, are noble edifices.The University Park, with its Avenues to Queen and Yonge streets, and the Normal School grounds, beautifully laid out and planted, are places where all may freely go for tranquil walks and needful recreation.The Provincial Magnetical Observatory is also situated iu the University Park, and is one of the meteorological stations established by the British Government, at the request of the Royal Society of England, in 1840.It is now attached to the University of Toronto.Its position is as follows ‘ Latitude 43° 39.4 North, Longitude 79° 2115 West, or 5 hours 17 minutes 26 seconds slow of Greenwich time.Toronto is at present the seat of the Provincial Government; and the several public Departments are located here.It has many industrial establishments, some of them extensive,—including foundries, tanneries, a great variety of other factories, and some very fine milling establishments,—which are thriving, and rapidly extending and improving their productions.Her spacious land-locked Harbor, easy of access to the largest craft that navigate our inland waters, and perfectly sheltered by the bar which faces it and keeps out the Lake, affords the utmost facility for any possible extension of business or trade.Connecting, as it does, at all seasons of the year, with almost every place of importance in Canada and the United States (seaboard as well as inland),— by means of the Grand Trunk, Great Western, Northern, and their connections; and by navigation, during summer, besides,—the future of Toronto cannot but be prosperous.Thanks to her steady energy and enterprise, no less than to her centralized position, she is already reaping the first-fruits of her new connections in an extending trade,—a steady prosperity which seems destined to be both durable and progressive.Distant from Niagara Falls 50 miles, Collingwood 93 miles, Hamilton 45 miles, London 114 miles, Kingston 165 miles, Montreal 333 miles, New York 500 miles, Boston 593 miles.Toronto returns two Members to the Provincial Parliament.Population about 50,000, and rapidly "increasing.Value of assessed property in 1858, $38,532,300; value of imports $7,500,000, exports $1,500,000.— Toronto, formerly called York, was founded, in 1794, by Lieut.Governor John Graves Simcoe.BUSINESS INDEX—TORONTO SUBSCRIBERS TO THE CANADA DIRECTORY.PAGE.PAGE.PAGE.PAGE.Accountants .… 885 Board of Agriculture 836 China, Glass, &e.….….837 | Deputy Surveyor, &c.838 Active Militia.$35 Board of Public Wor! 836 Church Society .837 Dining Saloons.888 Adjutant Gene 835 Board of Trade .836 Cigars, Tobacco, &c, 837 Distillers .888 mcies.……….835 Boarding Hous .836 City Corporation S37 Division Court .838 Agricultural I 835 Book Agent.886 City Recorder.837 Dressmaker.838 Alcohol, Caanphine 885 Bookbinders, & .S36 City Steam Sav 887 Dry Goods, Wholesale.…… 838 Ambrotypists, &e $35 Bookbinders St .836 | Civil Engineers, &c.857 Dry Goods, Wholesale and Architeots, .835 Booksellers.836 Civil Secretary’s O 837 Retail.en 839 Artists, &e.$35 Boots and Shoes.836 Clergy 837 Dye Stuffs .839 Attornies G 835 Brassfounders.886 Clerk of Crown aud .883 Edge Tool .859 Auctioneers, &e.835 Brewers, .837 Clerk of Quarter Sessions.838 Educational Auditor Brickmaker, &e.837 Clerk of the Peace .538 Emigrant Office 839 Brokers 837 Cloths, Cassimeres, &c 838 Engineers, Founders, &c.839 Brush Manufact .837 Coal and Wood Yards 838 Engraver & Lithographer.839 Builders .837 Collector of Customs.838 Exchange News Room.839 Building Societies … Collectors Executive Council.839 Bureau of Agriculture and Express Companies .839 .Statistics._ Fancy Goods .839 Banks.836 Butchers… Fireproof B 839 Banner, Ko.(painter .836 Cabinetmakers, § Florists .- 89 Bar and Sheet Iron;
