barber shop, Derby Line, for two weeks only, beginning Saturday, July 15.All hate below cost as I wish to carry none over.Mrs.J.A.Roy.The electric service here has been impaired by an accident at the Sherbrooke plant about two weeks ago, when under pressure of water at flood height, the steel racks which screen the water entering the penstock gave way, allowing the water wheels to become clogged with debris and necessitating the construction of a coffer dam to shut out the water so that repairs could be made.In this connection the company’s engineers have had their hands full, but complete efficiency is promised within a few days. The main development of the Southern Canada Power Company is at Drummondville, but the Sherbrooke plant is a valuable auxiliary, and to consumers at the southern end of the lines itis of paramount importance. The lessened efficiency has been most noticeable in daytime when the industrial power load has been heaviest. When there is unavoidable cause for impaired service p:ople are inclined to accept the situation philosophically and good-naturediy, as thoy should do.There has been little or no “kiching.” L.0.DREW, 46 main st, NEWPORT, was reélected chairman, and the usual business was transacted. The present rate of assessment is ten mills on the dollar, There is at present a deficit of a little over 8300 in the current account, which the cominis- sioners will be unable to make up without increasing the rate of assessment. The commissioners use the municipal valuation roll, which has not yet been completed, therefore no assessment was levied for 1922, as it was not known just what amount the commissioners would have to levy upon. The commissioners have a three-year contract with the College, at $82,000.00 a year, which will not expire until after the coming school year. The amount stated covers the cost of tuition of all Protestant children of the municipality up to and including the ninth grade (first academy). It would appear that a majority of the commissioners are in favor of the elimination of one or two of the higher grades to bring the cost within the present rate of assessment—ten mille, Made With Mature Holstein Cow on Government Farm In Montana.(Prepared by the United States Department | of Agriculture.) What will a dalry cow do in the way : of milk and butterfat production when fed on roughage exclusively?Per haps the consensus of opinion is that she will not do very well, but the.United Etates Department of Agrleul- ture has some figures that show what a few cows did that were fed on al-! falfa hay and corn silage, without | grain.A mature Holsteln cow was pas tared on irrigated, tame grass ut the foparunent farm at Huntley, Mont, ring the winter months she recelved nothing Lut corn silage and alfalfa hay.Bhe was under test and was milked three times a day.For 140.5, days and 98 uights she was on pus ture.During the rest of the year she consumed 8,014 pounds of alfalfa hay and 8086 pounds of corn silage, a! rather large amount of bulky feed. While this ration was fed the cow maintained her welght at practically what it was at the beginning of the test, and produced 14,210.1 pounds of milk and 470.24 pounds of butterfat. For the 12 months following the uest freshening this same cow was milked three times a day and given, Ba to roughage, all the grain would eat.The surprising fact is that she ate 7,060 pounds of grain and practically the same amount of! roughage as before. The actual quan-/ titles of roughage were 10,008 pounds of alfalfa hay, 8,825 pounds of silage and 4,280 pounds of beets. She was on pasture 130 days aud no nights. The milk production for the year was 205,400.4 pounds, and butterfat 828.11 pounds, and the gain in welght 200 pounds. But notice the difference In the nutrients required to produce the product the first year and the second year, when TH per cent more butterfat was produced. The first year, over and above malntenunce and In addition to pasture, the cow consumed for each 100 pounds of butterfat 156.37 pounds of digestible protein and 568.69 pounds of total digestible nutrients, and for each 1,000 pounds of milk ylelded she; used 51.7 pounds of digestible protein ; and 1818 pounds of total digestible nutrients. The second year, when she recelved all the grain she would eat, she re ‘celved above maintenance and In addition to pasture, In the production of 100 pounds of butterfat, 218.7 pounda of dizestible protein and 1074.4 pounds A Record-Breaking Holstein Cow.of total digestille nutrients; and In the production of 1,000 pounds of milk she used 70.48 pounds of digestible protein and 845.9 pounds of total di gestible nutrients. From a nutrition standpoint the
