As for the bantam boys\u2019 basketball team, they have not had any games this week, only practices.The division four juvenile boys basketball team played against Farnham on November 21st.CVR won 52-21.The high scorers were Jeffrey James Lefort and Thomas Recher.A great effort was made by Chris Angelopoulos and Mounceph Morssaoui.The division three juvenile team has not had any other games this week, but are continuing their hard work.Volleyball will be starting very shortly at CVR.Try-outs are being held the following two Tuesdays and Thursdays.The turnout for signing up this year was very good, and it looks like there will be three female teams, one bantam, one midget and one juvenile.Good luck to all athletes who have games or try-outs in the next week. NIEMANN-PICK DISEASE AWARENESS Giving Tree Tuesday \u201cIt\u2019s the foundation that is the roots of our tree,\u201d Heather Patenaude says referring to the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation (NNPDF) which has served as a support system in a multitude of ways for her and her husband, Simon Taillefer from the time their daughter, Monica, was diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Disease Type C, and throughout the course of her brief existence.It continues to play a large role in their lives in the years since their \u201cangel princess,\u201d as they fondly call her, has passed away.The NNPDF is based in the U.S, but their sister chapter is the Canadian Chapter, (CCNNPDF).Being that the Foundation (NNPDF and CCNNPDF) has done so much for them, it is no wonder they are championing its new fundraising campaign: Giving \u201cTree\u201d Tuesday.KATIE MARTIN katie.martin@tc.tc Tuesday, December 2, 2014 is Giving Tuesday.An occasion established by the United Nations and 92Y in 2012 \u201cto kick off the holiday giving season, which takes place on the first Tuesday following [American] Thanksgiving , Black Friday and Cyber Monday's shopping madness.\u201d The CCNNPDF and NNPDF followed with this theme to develop their fundrai- sing campaign Giving \u201cTree\u201d Tuesday.It was inspired by their \u201cPersevere for Life\u201d tree.They explain that \u201cLike a tree, our membership, our funding, our program services, our research all continue to grow and thrive with the love and nurturing of generous individuals like you.\u201d They were inspired to create the Giving Tree Tuesday name from the classic children\u2019s book The Giving Tree which is \u201cabout a tree that gives everything from apples to shade and one day gives up everything to provide wood for the person it has assisted for all the years.\u201d The campaign kick-starts on December 2 and between December 2 and December 31 the CCNNPDF \u201cwill benefit from matching funds of 1% for all donations made on-line via www.nnpdf.ca.\u201d The motto for the NNPDF is \u201cPersevere\u201d for when your child is diagnosed with an incurable disease, you have no choice but to step up and persevere.An explanatory pamphlet from the NNPDF and CCNNPDF explains that patients with Niemann-Pick Disease Type C \u201conly have their childhood to experience a lifetime.\u201d Heather and Simon explain their reaction to the difficulty of coming to terms with this fate: \u201cYour dreams slowly become taken away.You know that you're not going to get a wedding day, you're not going to get grandchildren, so you slowly backtrack on what you're not going to get: No first day of school, no first friend, no first step .it goes down gradually.\u201d Monica's initial prognosis was expected to be not longer than a few months, but they started praying for as Heather states, \u201cjust one year, one year so that she can celebrate every day there is in a year, every holiday; a picture of everything.\u201d Monica passed away peacefully in her parents arms, what they describe as \u201cthe best way we could have hoped for,\u201d a few months shy of her third birthday.The funds raised through Giving \u201cNC Tree Tuesday will be put towards strengthening the NNPDF, gram to provide services to families affected by Niemann-Pick Disease, and its program to support research itt \u201cits pro- : i GN toward finding treatments and a cure jj LC for Niemann-Pick Disease.\u201d The partnership between the NNPDF and the CCNNPDF exists in order to \u201chelp bi eliminate redundancy and maximize the impact of [their] research.\u201d The Foundation has helped the , Patenaude-Taillefer family enor- | mously through their journey with Niemann-Pick Disease affecting their family.They especially benefit from the annual conference hosted by the foundations which gathers families from around the world affected by the disease and connects them with each other.Heather and Simon are exponentially grateful for this feature of the foundations work in particular because they says: \u201cIt\u2019s like home for us.They're the only people in the world who understand.Nobody gets us like they do.\u201d Heather also explains how after Monica's passing, Simon helped to arranged for one of their friends from New Mexico, a connection made through help from the NNPDF, a woman had also lost a child to Niemann-Pick Disease, to come and visit Heather.Heather remembers how this friend, Lisa Chavez, came and just stayed with her.Heather was worried about not being able to be a good host, but Lisa understood the grief of losing a child to Niemann- Pick Disease and she simply said \u201cI'm here for you\u201d and was there to help and understand.This comforted Heather enormously and now she and Simon strive to be there as a support for other families, to help them through the struggle with the disease.Her way of accomplishing this has been to become a board member of CCNNPDF.She says of the Conference and asks rhetorically: \u201cWe could easily not go anymore, because what can the foundation do for us now [that Monica is gone] ?\u201d What it's about now is sharing their story to help other families going through what they went through.Simon put it succinctly \u201cHer life has ended, but this is how we keep it going, still, because if we stop talking about her it stops and wealth of wisdom dispensed in Kahlil Gibran's classic, The Prophet, is this astute insight: \u201cYou give but little when you give of your possessions.It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.\u201d With today being December 1st, the holiday hype is now officially set to get underway.I think it would be beneficial if we let this adage of Gibran's guide us as we get ready for Christmas.Perhaps let it challenge us to come up with more thoughtful gifts for our family and friends.Possessions are just that- possessions.Perhaps I'm being overly sentimental, but when I reflect on Christmas gifts of years past, the one that I cherish most of all wasn't a possession at all.That's not to say that I didn\u2019t get my share of valued possessions for Christmas.I got a lot of lovely gifts that I remember and am grateful for.But the one that has made me consistently the happiest was not a possession at all.As some of you may know, I grew up with my dad, Bill Martin, making the Dewiittville Skating Rink each winter.But, making and maintaining a rink in the face of global warming is an increasingly challenging task, a costly endeavor (both time- wise and money-wise) so for a decade it stopped.Two years ago it resurfaced and my most cherished Christmas present has not been anything wrapped beneath the Christmas tree.No, instead it has been pulling into the yard to see the snow my Dad has packed in the yard, signaling the green light for a season of rink-making.He's always elusive beforehand, not wanting to make any empty promises about the rink.But, once I see that, I know he\u2019s giving me the go-ahead.He's saying that he\u2019s willing to endure the countless late nights of trying to sleep while the pump runs non-stop as the rink is being flooded.He's saying that no matter how adamant I am that he has put enough hours into that rink, that he doesn\u2019t have to help; it's him still coming out, insisting on helping to shovel the snow after a big storm or flooding with me, just taking in the cold calm of the winter night together, appreciating the little moments.No possession could match the joy I get from being granted that gift on Christmas.All that to say, that when it comes to gift-giving, it should boil down to quality over quantity.To the thoughtfulness of a gesture rather than the price-tag attached to a purchase.FROM THE The annual meeting of the shareholders of the Livestock Breeders\u2019 Association of the District of Beauharnois Inc., was held in the Town Hall, Ormstown, on Wednesday afternoon.The attendance was poor and the President, Mr.Donald E.Black, remarked on this in his remarks during the meeting.However, it was a most interesting meeting because there was very free discussion on several maters.The question of the dates for the 1955 Ormstown Exhibition was brought up and secretary, Mr.Carlyle Dickson, told the assembly that these dates were fixed right after the 1954 Exhibition and are to be June 8, 9, 10, 11.There was a lengthy discussion on the dates and some thought that they should be changed to later in the month or even to the next month.The idea was to try and get away from the possibility of wet weather, which has besieged the show for two successive years with disastrous results to the finances.Some thought that it was impossible to set the dates according to the weather recently attained that honor is still an ordinary Cycle I student at CVR.Since her November 9 trip to Ottawa, however, she holds one thing that most 12 year-olds never dream of - Canada\u2019s Medal of Bravery, presented to her personally by Governor KATIE.MARTIN@TC.TC General Jeanne Sauvé.Her act of bravery occurred last year when she saved her three-year old brother from a fire in their home.Tracey-Lynn went with her mother to Ottawa where they were treated to a penthouse hotel room and an allowance of $110 a day.The awards took place at the Government House.Tracey-Lynn was the youngest present and to her the elegant hall was impressive.\u201cThere were guards all over the place,\u201d she recalls, \u201c10 lined up behind Jeanne Sauvé.I was so nervous.\u201d Judging from the photos taken by a government photographer and those which appeared in the Toronto newspaper, the 12 year-old kept calm during the official ceremony - the same temperament that allowed her to think exhibit launch The Quebec-Labrador Foundation (QLF) is pleased to invite you to the launch of a drawing exhibit which highlights the built heritage of the Montérégie and the Eastern Townships.The launch will take place on December 8, 7:00pm, at the Hemmingford Library, which is located at 552, avenue Goyette, in Hemmingford.This exhibition is an initiative of the Quebec-Labrador Foundation, as part of our project \u201cHighlighting Heritage through Visual Art\u201d founded by Canadian Heritage.The goal of this project is to offer an opportunity to the public to discover the history and the built heritage of the Montérégie and Eastern Townships through a series of observational drawing activities.For LCol Hlibchuk presenting the Regimental Medallion to Karl Kramell PHOTO PROVIDED that purpose, QLF offered two drawing classes at the beginning of the summer 2014, during which the participants learned basic drawing techniques.Then, QLF organized a series of workshops that took place in five towns in the Montérégie and Eastern Townships, namely Stanbridge East, Frelighsburg, Hemmingford, Lacolle and Knowlton.At each workshop, the participants were welcomed by members of the local historical society or local museum, who offered a guided tour in the town and shared their knowledge about the town's history.During each guided tour, the group of participants did a few stops to draw the beautiful heritage buildings around them.The Quebec-Labrador Foundation now invites the public to see, in this exhibition, a selection of drawings made by the participants during last summer's workshops.The participants also wrote historical texts to accompany their drawings, using the information provided to them by local historical societies and museums.The exhibit will be showcased first in Hemmingford from December 8, 2014, to January 4, 2015.Then, it will travel to other municipalities in the Montérégie and the Eastern Townships until the end of March 2015.Workshop attendee\u2019s
