Beyond all question the most potent creator of business demands in Canada is the newspaper advertisement.Millions upon millions of dollars are expended every day in the stores of the Dom- inioñ advertisements were prohibited by law for six months. It is not exaggeration to say that they would drop 50 per cent.It is not the current news of events alone that makes the press of such incalculable value to the pression of opinion. The business ness concerns in their announcements to the public, decisively influences both the volume and the direction of trade w hich flows to this or that store, office or bank. This is a fundamental fact no business house can afford to overlook.Public Health & There is an aspect of the highly praiseworthy campaign which has been conducted for some years on behalf of public safety, which is of very special interest to the real estate owner and operator, because it directly concerns the buildings in which he is interested, namely, the construction of dwellings in such a way as will be conductive to the safety of those who reside in them.Mr.Pitt points out that especially in view of the acuteness of another problem, which is practically real estate question, the shortage of hospital accommodation, this matter of housing safety is quite importent, and stated he would like to recommend it to the consideration of the Safety League and all other public bodies who are doing such excellent work toward the prevention of accidents.Housing conditions constitute a safety problem in two ways.Directly, in regard to forms of construe- tion which tend to produce accidents, and indirectly as regards the sanitary condition of dwellings.Poor health, besides being a public problem in itself, is also a predisposing factor in the causing of accidents and renders accidents, when they occur, more serious.Mr.Pitt calls attention to the outside stairs. Not only are these an eyesore which no other city on this continent tolerates to the same extent as Montreal does, but they are an invitation to accidents, especially in winter, when snow and ice accummal- ate on the steps. It is easier to fall in a dark room than a well lighted one. Also, dark rooms tend to lowered vitality which predisposes to dizziness, vertigo and similar sudden indispositions from which so many accidents arise.Apart from its unsightliness and its unhygienic conditions, an unpaved lane, or a dirty lane, filled with garbage and litter, is an invitation to accidents.Dirty, ill-kept yards at the rear of stores, dwellings and factories encourage accidents, and might well be dealt with as severely under this head as they are in many cities when they come under the attention of the sanitary inspectors.Lack of open spaces for children to play in drive the children into the streets where they are exposed to many accidents.Mr.Pitt suggests that in addition to the excellent work being done in the extension of playgrounds, some en-, ecuragement, perhaps in the way $f colony of Port Royal, in the Annapolis Basin of Nova Scotia, will be presented from station WJZ and twelve associated stations of the National Broadcasting Company from 9.156 to 9.46 p.m, E.DS.T.,, on Sunday, May 26th, in a programme of music sponsored by/the Canadian Pacific Railway. The opera is the work of Louvigny de Montigny, a former Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and has been set to musie by Dr.Healey Wil- lan, of the Toronto Conservatory of - Music, one of the best known of Canadian composers. The three leading characters, those of Samuel de Champlain, the Baron de Poutrin- court and Mare Lescarbot, will be played by Alfred Heather, Ulysse Pa- quin and Herbert Hewetson, respectively, all three well-known Canadian artists. The founding of the Order of Good Cheer may be said to have been the salvation of the struggling colony at Port Royal during the winter of 1605 to 1606.As a means of combatting the dreaded scurvy, he founded the “Order of Good Cheer” the first epicurean society outside Europe, to keep his men well-exercised by hunting and fishing, procure them a bet- ter diet, and promote à spirit of good cheer.Champlain, captain’ in the navy and geographer royal of France, was an explorer and colonizer, who is famous as the founder of Quebec, discoverer of Lakes Champlain, Ontario and Huron, and the man who established the power of France in Canada.Jean de Biencourt, Baron de Poutrin- court, was the concessionaire of Port Royal, and was an officer in the King’s Army.Marc Lescarbot, the third character of this opera, was an advocate in the Parliament of Paris, and 3 historian and poet.It is from his writings that the procedure of the Order of Good Cheer is known, Property Values tax concessions, might be given to those property owners who build detached or semi-detached houses providing a reasonable amount of open ground around the houses in which children may play. There are at present in Montreal enough lots subdivided to house nearly five times the present population, and when they are used up there is plenty more land to subdivide, so that it is rot for want of space that it is jot done. Some contractors are now showing a good example by building ou a lot and a half, leaving ample space around the house both for little children playing and also for .adequate sunlight on there or four ‘sides of the house.Mr.Pitt invites the civic, * authorities and the leading publie bodies to take up this aspect of the housing problem and give what encouragement they can.To those who deul in real estate, it is important that they realize our responsibility in this matter. From the material stand- quate sunlight on three or four sides interest in working for safer and healthier houses, because it can be demonstrated that better housing conditions mean higher property values everywhere.KIRBY ADVISES LOCKED CARS Says Cause of Greatest Number of Thefts is Carelessness of Drivers Local citizens view with Hurried Off to Court The ordinance was enforced to some extent last year, as a Windsor young man learned to his sorrow. He had £one to Port Stanley to spend his va- eation and had only been there three or four hours when he made the mistake of walking to the village drugstore in an abbreviated swimming suit, A village constable nabbed him, placed him on a train and hurried him to the police court in St.Thomas, without giving him the chance of dopning a protective wrap or a pair ‘of shoes. There he was tried and fined on a charge of improperly exposing bimself.Chief of Police Armstrong - took compassion on the youth.and loaned him an ancient frock coat in whch to return to Port Stanley, BUSHMEN NEED MORE HURLING = T0 GO PLACES White Sox Chief Says a Fourth Moundsman Would Give Him Pennant Claim New York.— Give the Chieago White Sox a fourth starting pitcher to team with Ted Lyons, Al Thomas and the ancient "Red Faber, let the youngsters on the club keep their present pace and the infield hold together, and Donie Bush, the tiny manager, promises Chicago a minor baseball miracle this season—a firat division club.Just naw the White Sox, with Youth sticking out all over the club, are sailing merrily along with Bud Clancy banging the ball lustily in tha wounded Art Shires’ place at Wirsé base, Bill Cissel hitting over 400 at second base, Willie Kamm playing fine ball at third and a youngster, Smith, doing a - fair job of shortstopping.Smead Jolley, the big coast outfielder, isn't hitting up to predictions, but the rookie Sheriff Harris is and Peynolds is a fixture in centerfield.Pe round out the picture, Bush needs only that elusive fourth pitcher, but he has’ high hopes Young Ed.Walsh, Hal!
