journey to the East, reliving the settings of much of his own life and work and kindling in his mind once more the memories of half a lifetime ago.Behind him lie Port Said, Aden, Bombay, Colombo, Singapore, Saigon, Manila, and Hongkong.>.-by JOHN CRUESEMANN i Just \u201cbefore Maugham set off he talked to me about this journey of his into the past.\u201cIt is a wonderful feeling to be free.I have finished with writing.And before I die I want to see again those places where I lived years ago.I want to remember\u2019 vividly: my impressions of the Kast.\u201cI claim,\u201d he told me, \u201cthat no writer can write about people without having models.\u201d At Hongkong.the last stop before Japan, Maugham was questioned on this topic.\u201cActually,\u201d he answered, \u201canyone who recognizes himself in my books pretends to be annoyed.But secretly he is delighted.\u201d Threat HIRTY-FIVE years ago, when Maugham had been last in Hongkong \u2014 the original setting for \u201cThe Painted Veil,\" which he was writing at the time \u2014 the Colonial Secretary there thought that the man in the tale, a rather amorous character, was a portrait of himself.\u2018He threatened legal action.So Maugham set the story in a fictitious country.That Colonial Secretary, if he be alive, might well reflect on what Maugham himself once wrote : \u2018\u2018\u2019Truth is not only stranger than fiction.it is more telling.To know that a thing has actually happened gives it a poignancy, touches a chord which a piece of acknowledged fiction misses.\u201cIt is to touch this chord that some authors have done everything they could to give you the impression they are telling the plain truth.\u201d However, no one complained when Maugham wrote his most celebrated short story, \u2018\u2018Rain,\"\u2019 in Hongkong.But that, at least, was so firmly in the South Seas.On this visit, though, there were no ructions, and Maugham went off quietly to buy a set of China plates similar to the ones he had bought years before, which were cracked or lost.\u201cIn life,\u201d he mused, \u201ceverything that\u2019s breakable is eventually broken.\u201d A drive T Singapore Maugham sailed in during a monsoon.\"I have travelled,\u201d he said, \u201c8,000 miles to see the Singapore sunrise and all I see is mist and rain.\u201d Malaya and especially Singapore, he Gardner.Compare the situation at home where, alghough he has another two years of contract with Rank, there is nothing definite lined up for him at Pinewood.But more significant is this.The star who didn't want to go to America now says, with a defiant glint in those huge, plaintive, yet essentially honest eyes: \u201cI'm absolutely potty about Hollywood.For working in, that is, not for living.\u201c] can't wait to get back.There's a punch in the air.The pressure is terrific.And they're the work that matters .making movies.Dozens of them.And great subjecis.With the best directors in
