grants for purchase of book collections., The profusion, colour and fragrance of the Flowers of Jasper provide a rare element of charm, an extravaganza of ethereal delight in harmony with the majestic beauty of the alpine wonderland that has been set aside as a game sanctuary and national playground in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.: Several hundred varieties of wild flowers have been catalogued by botanists in the 4,200 square miles of Jasper National Park. And Bill Nicholls, head gardener at Jasper Park Lodge, the modern and luxurious resort that is.the centre of social and cultural life in Jasper, has successfiully introduced dozens of other blooms. All these add beauty for the heart to cateh and for the soul to treasure in a shining, vibrant ‘world of colour, movement, sight and sound, as the visitor wends his way along the miles of paths that interlace the log bungalows of the lodge, or strolls and rides on the mountain trails. The hand of the year swings in reverse as one goes upward and spring comes late in the Rockies.White anemones and yellow snow lilies are the first to burst into bloom, usually early in May.Philadelphia lilies, “as red as poppies against the dark pines”, are radiant on the lower hills when the vanguard of tourists follow the historic Athabaska trail over mile after mile of alpine meadows. The wild rose and Irresponsibility Hinder Work of Police The entire island of Montreal By Allan Bernfeld has been shocked and horrified by details of the murder of six-year-old Raymond Trudeau.Seldom has a murder case aroused so much indignation and alarm in the public mind.As newspapermen soon learn, such cases seem to occur in cycles. So it is not surprising to find out that in NDG there have been a number of incidents of child molestation — none of them with the same w»esult, fortunately women, — and incidents involving young In Verdun, an attempted attack on a 15-year-old girl was re- ported last week. There was ax child-molestation in Westmount. And in Montreal a body of civic- minded citizens loudly urged a police drive to “get the perverts off the streets.” Once again, the onus Is on the parents to educate their children. The youngsters have to be told what not to do if they are to be safe on the streets.Director Pierre Gatineau of the Verdun Police has joined police officials of other communities in repeating an old warning to the children: Do not talk to strangers on the street and do not accept a lift in a stranger's car. Some years ago, an Americal city was faced with the problem of apprehending a persistent child molester who created considerable panic among the parents.Police, civic officials, schools, newspapers, and radio stations got together to teach the children six simple points.Among other things, children were taught that if they saw another child getting into a car anywhere except in front of his home, they were to take a.stone and scratch the license number And it worked. It was with one of these license numbers that police eventually caught the man and brought him to justice. This proved that the children can be taught what to do to protect themselves and others.Parents have to warn their children and rgpeat the warning.* ¥ % ‘Newspapers are nol supposed to openly criticize other newspapers. It's an old rule of the the assumptions that the Christian must be concerned not only with the hope of ultimate redemption but also with the hope for a better society within history. So the second great problem is “Social Ques- tions—The Responsible Society in a World Perspective.” The commission which deals with this question treats first the World Social Revolution and considers very frankly the Decline of Classical Capitalism, the Reformulation of Socialism, and in general the Concern of the Churches with Social Problems.I would personally interject this comment: The most tragic mistake which the business world has made in the last decade is to use the phrase “Free Enterprise” as though it still existed, or could or should exist. If business had had the sense to accept and develop the idea of controlled Capitalism the social problems would have been easier to solve, practically and politically. For the reformulation of the doctrine of Socialism and its recognition of private enterprise bring the two schools of thought very close together. The second comment I would make personally is that some churchmen are far too much inclined to sympathy with Communism on the ground that it is only a Christian heresay. But the same might be said of National Socialism. We shall keep our Christian thinking clearer and saner if we see all secular totalitarianisms as enemies of the Gospel. This commission's report goes on to describe the trends in different parts of the world. Two are particularly interesting, In Great Britain there is a strong and gorw- in- movement toward the education and use of the laymen in these social problems and the application of Christianity =~ to them.-Some readers will have known of the Christian News-Letter which was issued fortnightly in England dur- ing the last war.It was generally four pages, and sometimes had a supplement of the same size, but it was a steady comment on world events from a Christian point of view.Kathleen Bliss, one of the Editors, will be a delegate to Ev- anston, The second significant thing is the change of mind in the Lutheran Churches of Europe in regard to social problems. Before the Second World War the Lutherans left such questions to the State; now they realize that the Church as such has a word to say. This commission has a section on The Presentation of the Gospel in Communist Countries.BAPTIST
