getting ready to keep posted on the little events of interest in the coming year.” Last week, my fellow columnist, George “Buddy” Cochrane became your Westmount Whimsier and tossed up an excellent bit of drivel as usual.Sorry, George, I really didn't mean that; after all you did promise we'd be friends this year but can’t seem to get out of the habit of snapping at you when I get the chance. There is, however, one New Year's Resolution that I should like to add to the six, Buddy suggested last week.Resolved the number of columns in the Examiner be reduced.Maybe I'm cutting my own BULLETINS FROM BIRDLAND 3 WINIFRED E.WILSON SNOWY OWL Rumour said that Snowy Owls had again come to us from the mossy, marshy flat land of the far north.“And,” our informant added, “if you want to see a lot of them at once,- visit the city ‘dump.” “Of all places to find lovely white birds!” laughed Mary.“Anyway, they ought to show up well in those dingy surroundings.” When cold weather commences, the Owls always forsake their homes for slightly milder localities, so that any winter we might see one or two.But every three to five Years they are forced to migrate farther, and in vast numbers, because there is a meat shortage——their favourite lemmings are scarce. We might well be pleased over this situation, as they do their best to catch our city rats, and for that reason collect on the dump.Their economic status is high, yet -they are not under the protection laws of all our provinces, and there are always people ready to shoot when they appear.Although essentially birds of the open, when they come to civilization at times like this they fairly over-run.the place.Unaccustomed as they are to city ways, they sometimes make fatal mistakes. In December ’45 one was found with a broken wing, while another was for three days caught in a flue of our contagious hospital.Fortunately, by the time the Snowy Owls arrive here the majority of smaller birds have left for the south; otherwise our songsters might suffer, because these large Owls like them next best to lemmings, and are able to catch them on the wing.Hares and occasionally fish constitute the rest of the diet. They are able to carry at least as much as their own weight.Snowy Owls are very bulky looking, because they are heavily feathered in order to withstand the Arctic cold.Their broad wings have a span of 54 feet, and are used in a slow, flapping motion. They are 25 inches long, with large, round heads. They nest right on the bare, cold ‘ground, and lay from 2 to 8 pure white eggs. These hatch one at a time. The fluffy babies are fed on small mammals and ptarmigan, and, before we see them, have grown into beautiful white birds sharp- ¥ throat, but it seems to me that the Examiner is slightly overloaded with columns.(Editor—please note) I'm not against columns, bul a good thing can be carriea too far, so I invite readers’ comment on this subject. What features in the Examiner do you like best? What columns do vou rarely or never read ?How about dropping a little note in carc or this column and give us your opinion, and if you don’t like Westmount Whimsies—say so.O.K?Have heard a great many people complaining about the condition of the roads, the amount of snow, the inefficiency of the city in cleaning streets, the traffic tie- ups, etc, etc.so decided to do a little checking up with thc proper authorities just to find out what are the actual facts. The amount of snow which has fallen since last Saturday and including last Saturday is of no great consequen- ce—about 12 or 13 inches (unofficial) but it was the accompanying wind that has caused the trouble.Yesterday the ‘employees at the City Hall were having an extra day's holiday to get 1947 off to the best possible start, as were the bank employees in Montreal proper. However, for those ban- Kers in the bank branches in West- mount there was no holiday on Thursday. No, for them it was business as usual, and did they ever envy their more fortunate fellow-workers that extra day.Shorts The city’s younger set celebrated New Year's Eve with their traditional zestful and youthful enthusiasm.Derek Cushing, the chartered accountant to he, threw a little party in his large Cedar avenue home and Ray Lank, who's alleged tc be studying at Sir George Williams College this year, played host at another do.Nancy Cliff, our poetess.froth up Upper Roslyn way, will be practice teaching at Roslyn School next week.Lucky Roslynites. And permit me to wish you a rather belated Happy New Year.‘Westmount Highlights By GEORGE COCHRANE Its been many a moon, as my good Indian friend Tonto Magee would phrase it, since I have written more than a brief sentence or two about William Atwood Macdonald, Westmount's former ace drink vendor and now president of the Westmount Young Liberals Association.Young WAM passed another milestone in his political career Monday when he spoke over the radio for the first time. The occasion: a speech by the Hon.Adelard Godbout, leader of Quebec’s provincial leaders.Atwood served up the introduction.Ike, as I prefer to call the Chgsterfield avenue political dynamo, is & busy man these days.In addition to his numerous and varied duties as president of the Westmount Young Liberals Association, of which he was the founder, Ike is a prominent member of the McGill Liberal Club, a contributor to the McGill Daily, a prodigious writer of semi-legible letters and a top-rate student in McGill's faculty of arts and science. It all adds up to a busy schedule and to prove that he is letting no moss grow under his tootsies these frosty days WAM took me on his rounds Monday afternoon.I called for the young man at a quarter to three and found him rehearsing his radio speech. He gulped down a glass of undiluted grapefruit juice and we then set off for the Liberals organization office in Le Canada building. There WAM deposited a copy of his talk for publicity purposes. Then it was up to the Sun Life building.Michel Normandin’s office, where the broadcasting party was to meet.Michel Normandin is the young, good-looking French-Ca- nadian lad who has carved quite a niche for himself in radio circles. He's also the gent who does the announcing for Eddie ly barred with dark brown. Some of the parents are similarly marked, though many are, like their name, entirely snowy.Should we see any birds by Christmas time?Barrister and Solicitor Telephone Department for the closing of estates’ of Deceased Persons.57 St.James St.West HA.9238 Quinn’s pachyderm performances on Wednesday nights at the Forum and is also a member of Montreal's City Council, B category.1 first met Michel in my Herald days when we bumped into each other, literally, at a City Hall reception for the pennant winning Montreal Royals baseball club, 1945 edition. As we entered the office Michel was talking to Adelard Godbout. It was the first time that I had ever seen Mr.Godbout in the flesh.Red-cheeked, short and blue-eyed, the provincial Liberal leader gives the impression of meeknss. His voice is low and soft but beneath this veneer of quietness you can detect a certain determination in the man, a feeling of sturdy independence that you wouldn't like to trifle with.Eventually the rest of the party arrived and we drove up to the King’s Hall building on St.Catherine street and took the elevator up to Radio Canada’s studios.Mr.‘Godbout was to speak in both French and English, each speech to fill in a 15-minute spot. The speeches were to be recorded and broadcast that night. The French speech was recorded first.Ike and I stood in the control booth and watched as the fascinating machinery that is radio began to function. Then the French version was over.Ike stepped into the broadcasting studio, separated from the control booth by only a pane of glass.WAM slipped off his suitcoat and Mr.Godbout followed suit, or, if you prefer, followed suitcoat. The voices were tested. Then the studio announcer introduced the program, pointed to WAM and the well-enunciated words of the president of the Westmount Young Liberals Association came floating into the control! room. The engineer turned around long enough to say to me, “Your friend has a very good voice.” “He certainly has,” I agreed.WAM finished his spiel, Mr.God- bout began his.Mr.Godbout's English is far from perfect. He speaks rather slowly in his second language and, to make matters worse, he was nursing a bad cold.As the minutes fleeted by, consternation developed in the control booth.Mr.Godbout was signalled to talk more quickly. The young lawyer who was to thank him was told to cut his speech down to one minute.Even at that, the program ran over the 15-minute mark.It was decided to broadcast Mr.Godbout's speech as recorded but to record shortened versions of ES A a) dt ANS pre ES Po i mag nu R ¢ 6 pe AA “ - D LE ah A pra re a 5 au Li LE - fy D EN PE Sp Sy SS * BY REG this month, Scouts Cubs notifying Headquarters as to how much salvage they collect during * * | Temple Emanu-El J Regular Sabbath eve Services, to-day at 8:15 p.m.HM.Caiser- man, General Secretary, Canadian Jewish Congress preside.Mid-Winter Grand All Expense Party Tobin's Travel Bureau are arranging a mid-winter tour for five days in New York City from January 20th to January 26tÿ.The theatres and operas in New York are all in full swing and shopping promises to be very intcresting. The party is limited, is all ex- ke's and the lawyer McNaughton'’s introduction and thank-you talks. But by this time Cochrane was hungry and left.At 7.30 Ike phoned to tell me that his scheduled parley with Roland Beaudry, M.P., who has been advising the local Young Liberals Association, was off.You can see, gentle reader, that friend William Atwood is leading a life of work—but he is enjoying it and don't be surprised if it's Bill MacDonald, M.P., before many more years have gone the way of all time.GROOME Other groups wishing to undertake similar collections are asked to make their own arrangements to do so.The first thing you will require is a place to store the paper. Most public buildings, schools, churches, etc., will find themselves unable to grant you permission to store the paper in their rooms due to the fire insurance regulations.A garage, either rented or donated, is likely the best accommodation available. When a ton of paper has heen col- Jected, a truck may be called.Headquarters will gladly arrange this for you.Bundles of paper should be piled two feet high, folded once, this pile making a bundle of approximately 50 lbs.A third suggestion is that an area or several troups band te- gether and arrange a one-day cams- paign from door-to-door and tor which Headquarters has sent out a detailed plan.If the collection is undertaken as a straight good turn with no payment desired, a Salvation Army truck will be put at your disposal for a door-to- door campaign.About 15 city blocks can be covered in 3 to 4 hours, which is the longest the boys should be kept at thig job.The fifth suggestion is that units undertake their own door-to-door campaign and rent a truck for the occasion. We hope all Scouters will get in touch with Leslie Houldsworth at Headquarters as soon as they have made their plans. He will be glad to help you where he possibly can.Headquarters is responsible tor reporting the total tonnage of paper collected in the Scout Drive in the District of Montreal during January, so they will appreciate reports from all groups by the end of the month.Office Boy Needed An Office Boy is required at Scout Headquarters, 1523 Bishop Street, for permanent employment.Applicants should be 15 or 16 years of age.The position will involve ordinary office work—-mail, mimeographing, telephone, ad- dresscgraph, messages, etc.A salary appropriate to the duties is offered and it is desired that employment starts as quickly as possible.Applicants should call at Headquarters ang interview Mr, Paterson; or a written application may be sent addressed to him.The staff of Headquarters wish to take this belated opportunity to wish all Scouters, Scouts and Cubs a Very Happy New Year, and hope that their unit will enjoy one of the best years in its history.pense, and will be personally conducted by Mrs.H.B.Pope.If you wish untruth is being repeated so often nowadays that many unthinkingly have accepted the notion, on the baz's of “where there's smoke, there’s fire,” that there exists a “capitalistic conspiracy to destroy trade unions.” This malevolent rumour may be the smoke screen for the communistic effort to wreck trade unions. It is utter nonsense. Our life has been, and is, lived among all sorts and conditions of men.In the course of our work we meet communists, socialists, trade unionists, civil servants, manufacturers, farmers and other capitalists, and members of governments, municinal, provincial ard federal. We do not know an industrial employer who does not believe that “trade unions are necessary and they are here to stay.” Some of the acts of unions are open to question, some of their privileges are under~-~-‘ie, but the desirability of workers’ organizations is agreed generally.Just as associstions of employers and farm organir-tions are subject to criticism, and capable of improvement, so are employees’ unions. They are rizht or wrong according to their works. The undemocratic, destructive elements in trade unions, the people who ss- that a government suvervised, secret, strike vote is a “dagger aimed at the heart of labor”, are the real conspirators whom trade union members should watch most carefully.Dept.Ottawa THE EXAMINER, RICH NUTS It is interesting to note the large number of rich people who ‘are nuts. One woman near here built a house for fifty thousand, more or less, and now she won't let anybody in to put curtains on the windows, or fix the yard. She buys ten pounds of horse meat a week for her dogs, cuts the week's supply of meat into strips, a strip per dog per day, wraps the strips in wax paper, and feeds the dogs so much they are sick.Another rich man was thrown into iail for beating his dogs.If you cared to have five or six pages about rich people who are nuts, I could furnish it.Maybe just as many people without money are nuts, but don’t have a chance to show it till they get money.—Gordon Smart in Script, Beverly Hills, California.OIL, WAX, AND PAINT We have often paid our respects to paint as a material that makes old things look new.Now we want to say a word for lubricating oil, writes William Feather. We assume that engineers in charge of factory machinery and owners of automobiles need no advige. But householders and office managers overlook the "contribution that drops of oil can make to the smooth functioning of swivel chairs, safes, steel filing cabinets, locks, doors, typewriters, kitchen gadgets, clocks and laundry machinery. We might also add a word for wax.Its potentialities are well presented, without exaggeration, on Fibber McGee's program.TOO RAPID, TOO EASY Often a chap with an excellent idea is slapped down merely because someone thinks he is rising too rapidly and easily. If he tries again later, he may succeed MILLIGAN church.I know people who claim that they don't need to go to church in order to be Christians, and who claim that they are just as good, if not better, than certain of their church-going acquaintances. That may or may not be true.Speaking for my- Canada is a Christian country —at least, the vast majority of with 5,268,802 persons who told the census takers that they be- self as a fairly regular churchgoer, I certainly do not go there because I think I am good, but the people of this Dominion claim to he Christians. In order to confirm this statement, I have just looked up the 1941 figures in the Canada Year Book and I find that out of a total population of 11,506,655, only 19,126 said they had “no religion,” while 17,157 are listed as ‘religion not stated,” and 2,908 as ‘‘Pagan.” Those listed as “Jewish” numbered 168,367.Adding these four categories together we have a total of 193,309 non-Christians, which leaves a balance of 11,313,346 Christians. Moreover, these Christians registered themselves as members or adherents of particular denominations. The figures for the leading churches are as follows: Roman Catholic, 4,- 986,522; United Church 2,204,875; Anglican, 1,751,188; Presbyterian, 829,147; Baptist, 483,592; Lutheran, 401,153.The total for all those Christian denominations is 905,178.These figures are quite striking, and they made me feel proud to belong to a country in which 98 per cent of the citizens not only declared themselves to be Christians, but claimed affiliation with particular churches.I suffered a let-down, however, when I made further enquiries, for I found that there was an enormous difference between the number of those who “profess and call themselves Christians” and those who are actual members of the various churches.I confirmed my investigation to the four leading Protestant churches and found that their official memberships were as follows: Anglican, 800,000; United Church, 739,079; Presbyterian, 173,482; Baptist, 137,474.These figures show a total of 1,850,035 persons in full membership of those four churches, as compare! longed to those denominations.“Comparisons are odious,” they say: and in this instance they are rather humiliating, for Here we have over five million persons who claim allegiance to four large Protestant churches, while less than two million of them are actual members. It is true, of course, that many of the nonmembers attend church occasionally, and a large number are children who attend Sunday Schools; but even allowing for these, the number of adults and children who seldom or never attend church or Sunday School must be very great. In view of this situation, the four leading Protestant churches have decided to launch campaigns for bringing the sheep into their individual folds. There will be no “sheep stealing,” but every home will he visited and those who have declared that they are Anglicans, United Church, Presbyterians or Baptists, will be invited to prove it by actually affiliating themselves rather because I believe I am not good enough and want to be better. Moreover, I believe that as a professing Christian I have a right and a duty to be connected with some Christian church and willingly to support its services to the community. One has only to think of what our community, our city and our country would be like if all the Christian churches were to be closed.Christianity would soon fade out.Our children would grow up worse than Pagans and juvenile delinquency would be rampant. The moral conscience of the nation would be deaad, and the spiritual life of the people would perish. Those 19,126 Canadians who told the census takers that they had “no religion” were at least honest. There may be hypocrites within the churches, but there are evidently more outside in, those who claim to be Christians and yet ignore the very institutions which keep Christianity alive.c~ ATOBOMBS More and more people, nowadays, are doing without things their parents never had.* + * A Maryland cat adopted a mouse to play with its new-born class.Although I only spent one year at Cornell, I was given credit for it at Dalhousie Law School where I was granted my LL.B.I wag surprised to find that “at Cornell Law School there was, and no doubt still is, a course in Blackstone, which at that time was not given in any Canadian Law School. My interest in Cornell was first aroused because the President at that time was Jacob Gould Schur- man, a native of Prince Edward Island, and for a time, a professor at Acadia and Dalhousie Universities. He, as is well known, became a prominent figure in the United States, and for some years was United States Ambassador to Germany. He is remembered as being one of the outstanding presidents of Cornell.Busy as he was he took a special interest in Canadian undergraduates.A Canadian who endeared himself to all who came under his influence was Alexander Frazer, a native of Cape Breton and a graduate of Dalhousie University. He was the Associate Librarian of Cornell Law School and later Librarian, and had the reputation of being not only an outstanding Librarian but a born teacher, not only about law books but of their contents.Cornel campus is known to be one of the finest perhaps in the world.Splendid new buildings are constantly being built.Fifty years ago there were three thousand undergraduates and there will be nine thousand two hundred during the coming acadeinic year. The President of today, Dr.Day, a scholar of note as well as an able administrator, is also noted for the fact that, busy as he is, he keeps very close to the students and all their interests. It was interesting to meet the classmates, who attended the reunion, and to compare notes.Ithaca has, of course, grown since those early days and now has a population of twenty thousand with many attractive residences and stores.I spoke dt Ithaca Kiwanis Club, and it was my first experience of arriving at a service club to speak just as the members had had finished their luncheon — so it was not an after-dinner speech so far as I was concerned.I arrived at Ithaca at 12.53 and began my address at 1.05, and later President Huntley, a public utility company executive, and I had lunch and then principles of the Sermon on the Mount as the basis of the world's economie system and the underlying principles of all the religions of the world.I did not content myself with merely referring to those precepts, which.once tried would give us a world really worth living in, but went on to advocate the economic mechanism which will make such application possible to the lasting advantage of people everywhere. It seems almost too good to be true to believe (as a steadily increasing number of persons do) that the economic mechanism is an equitable medium of exchange, having as its basis work for work measured by time, than which no measure could possibly be fairer to all humans everywhere. With such pure money and mutual banking, and the law of supply and demand having free play, it would be as easy for one as for another to share in the bounty >t a generous Creator and the world would then have an economic system based on abundance rather than artificial scarcity as at present. This, I claimed, would end poverty and the race to get something for nothing by exacting tribute from others hy legal but too often immoral methods. With abundance as the (Continuea on Page 5) the statute governing Citizenship recognizes the equal status of women.Formerly, women applying for citizenship were classed as persons “under a disability” in the same category as minors and insane persons.Under the new Act women will have control of their national status.Ceremonies from Coast to Coast Because the legislation is important to them, as it is to all Canadians, women's organizations across Canada are taking an enthusiastic part in Canadian Citizenship Week which is being observed from Jan.5th to Jan.11th.During that week Citizenship ceremonies are being held in Charlottetown, Halifax, Fredericton, Quebec, Montreal, Toronto, St.Cath- arines, Welland, Windsor, Sudbury, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria. In each of these cities, local committees of women’s organizations, service clubs and educational bodies are working with civic and provincial officials iParranging ceremonies when new citizens will be given certificates of citizenship and welcomed into the Canadian.family.Retains Canadian Citizenship Here are some of the clauses which affect women: When a Canadian woman marries an alien, she no longer automatically changes her nationality. She retains her Canadian Citizenship until such time as she files a form voluntarily relinquishing it.To Obtain Canadian Citizenship A woman who marries a Canadian can, if she wishes, obtain Canadian citizenship after one year's residence in Canada with her husband.Previously such wives were regarded as “Canadian nationals” under the Canadian National Act of 1921 even prior to landing in Canada.Under the 1921 Act they were entitied to receive a Canadian passport which requested protection and assistance in foreign countries as a Canadian national, but they were not regarded as Canadian citizens under the Immigratoin Act.This anomaly no longer exists under the Canadian Citizenship Act and the Immigration Act has been altered to conform. In accordance with the principle of giving women an equal position with men, an alien wife does not acquire Canadian citizenship as a result of her husband becoming a naturalized Canadian. She ap- Is To Be Speaker At
