Ormstown, Howard S.Billings at Chateauguay and all elementary schools opened for the 1971-72 school term. That means that you and | and everyone else whe drives a motor vehicle must exercise more caution when behind the wheel. The accident rate in this province is proof that Quebecers have more accidents per capita than Canadians in other provinces. If that isn't sufficient proof.remember what car insurance costs here. There's an old adage one hears from time to time that rules, or laws, are made to be broken. One would almost be led to believe that we abide by that phrase. How many traffic laws do you see broken ever day?Enough to make your head spin if you ever stopped to think about them. For instance.how many motorists only come to an ‘American’ stop at stop signs: how often do you see motorists cutting over to the wrong side of the white line on curves; how many drivers exceed posted 30 m.p.h.speed limits in towns ane villages?Almost everyone.Th Wittingly or otherwise.most car owners commit other infractions constantly. Many vehicles are on our roads with faulty brakes.questionable tires, poor lights, unsafe steering. And bear in mind that vehicles are often driven by physically unfit persons. It adds up to one thing: keeping your car in good condition and obeying the law just isn't enough. You must drive defensively in order to avoid accidents caused by ‘the other fellow’.We can only say that we hope you'll be careful. At this point vou probably think we're going to remind you to stop when school buses are loading or unloading passengers. We're not.We believe that would be an insult. That particular law is not new and everyone who has been driving for the past few years is aware of it and certainly young people who have taken driver education courses not only know the law .they also obey it.So enough said about passing stopped school buses from either direction when warning lights on the buses are flashing. We do believe however that something should be said on behalf of operators of school buses.Did you know that they recently completed a three-week course?Don't scoff. We know a man who has been driving school buses for twenty-five years and when he told us he was enrolling for the course our first thought was ‘How much are you going to be paid to take the course?’ Our second thought was ‘After 25 years in the business.Who can they find with more experience.Youshould be the teacher.” - We were wrong. And s0 was anyone else whose thoughts concurred with ours.Just because school bus drivers have been conveying students to and from school twice a day and five days a week without a scratch on their records didn't mean they were fully qualified for the job.Far from it.Ask any one of ihem who took the course sponsored by the Continuing Education Department of the Protestant Regional School Board. Some of them might tell you that in the intervening vears since they first obtained their credentials to drive school buses that they had forgotten most of what they once knew. The meanings of various road signs, for instance. They will definitely tell you that the instructors, Bill Mavnes of Chateauguay and W.Gruer of Ormstown, brought them up to date on safety regulations never thought of ten, fifteen and more vears ago. They'll tell you that the audio-visual aids including films not only provided them with a better insight into how to put safety suggestions into practice but they'll probably admit that prior to the three- week course thev had acquired some habits not conducive to safety.Because they were shown films showing those habits they recognized their faults and have corrected them.And.believe it or not, the Continuing Education Department three-week course included child psychology.Getting down to brass tacks.men and women who drive school buses and who took the course can now be considered teachers, to a degree. We don’t mean they can substitute in the classroom but we do mean that they are now better qualified to teach those youngsters going to school for the first time how to protect themselves while getting on or off buses.“Teach them young and bring them up right" is something school buses drivers are going to be qualified to do from now on.Finally.let's get back to you and I, the motorists.irregardless of how many courses those school bus drivers take and how much teaching they do.there's almost certain to be a problem child on one bus or another. He might be a smart aleck prone to disobeying or he might be a kid with a case of puppy love wanting to impress the belle of the bus .he might even be absorbed about studies .but a few false steps could mean death if one took him in front of a passing car.We said we wouldn't insult you about failing to stop and wait while school buses loaded or unloaded passengers, but we all know that even adults can forget. Please, don’t you be one of them. You'd never forgive vourselfif you killed or injured even a smart Aleck who needed a good bump on the behind. The final thing to bear in mind is that some of those youngsters were probably never taughtsafetyprecautions of any kind at home.Kids get blamed for this and that but at least half of the time the parents are at fault. Some of them don't know and don't care where their kids are or what they're doing.A little hell raising is normal but being destructive and continually disobeying isn't.If a youngster repeatedly flaunts authority he shouldn't be allowed on a school bus. Some of those school bus drivers worry a great deal more than some parents about safety and for that reason we believé they should have the authority to flatly refuse to carry children who jeopardize-either the safety of the other children or the good record of the bus driver.Powerscourt Powerscourt U.C.W.met in the Church on Tuesday, August 31 with eight was sent Hospital.to Mrs.B.McGowan, who is a patient in the Montreal Mr.Elmer Platt of Toronto Mrs.George Laurin and family at Newburgh, Ont.| Letter to The Editor | Dewittville, Quebec August 30, 1971.Editor, Huntingdon Gleaner Huntingdon, Quebec.Inc., Dear Sir: We in Quebec - la belle Province- have been promised the right to acquire an education in whatever field we choose and to pursue it tothe level of which we are capable.Yet in view of the unemployment statistics, our children are asking. What is the point of acquiring an education” Are there any advantages in holding a bachelor's or master's degree?Or can we find a job and a place in life equally well without these credentials? The situation in our Utopian society.where we are provided with free medical attention, financial benefits if we become unemployed.monetary rewards if we produce children and, finally, compensation for having become elderly, does not encourage our young Lo become scholars. Our society is oriented towards expecting a specific reward for a specific effort and the educational system, as it now stands, does not seem to be providing the expected rewards. We may be able to avoid the impact of the gloomy statistics by rationalizing that political parties can juggle figures to provide negative propaganda for their opponents or that journalists may distort the facts in order to produce sensational newspaper copy.Yet we may not so easily put from our minds the knowledge that a highly intelligent young man who possesses an honors degree in history.is slinging hash and wondering what happened to the beautiful promises.Nor can we forget the young food scientist who finds employment in the spinning department of a woollen will, or the Bachelor of Science graduate who becomes a chambermaid in a downtown hotel. Can we blame our children for questioning.for asking, Why, not drop out and try to find an alternative life style?Great strides in the field of education were made, in comparatively few years, in this province and well- equipped regional schools, with highly qualified staffs and costing the taxpayer a great deal of money, seemed to spring up over night. Now the junior colleges are providing a period of two intermediary years in which the student will prepare for university. In theory the system sounds ideal, yet in practice, there is disappointment, in all too many cases, when the education goals have been reached. In some instances, employers are hiring graduates of the three-year technical CEGEP courses, in preference to university graduates.‘‘Why must we pay more for your fancy education?’ they ask.In other cases, employers find that university graduates, especially art graduates, are just not qualified to cope with the demands of business and industry. But it is not only in Quebec that university students are suffering. The Ontario Department of Education has instituted a retraining program for Bachelor of Arts graduates, teaching a specific skill.Across Canada and in the US.as well, students are being forced to take jobs that have no relation to their education. It is not surprising that they are questioning the value of university education.Perhaps.in the future, students will enter university.not with the primary aim of acquiring a diploma or degree that will provide them with well-paid jobs, but rather with a view to pursuing one or several branches of knowledge tor their own intellectual satisfaction. Is the idea of a plumber who is a student of psychology so ludicrous?Or a garage mechanic whose interest lies in the field of art history?Dr.Michael Brick, an American educator, believes our attitude to learning must change. He points out that in some parts of the U.S.community colleges are worrying less about credits and degrees and attempting to provide a variety of services for all types of people in the community.Colleges may set up libraries and art centres and become a focal point in community development. The same thing can happen in our universities.‘‘Today education is a lifelong process.” says Dr.Brick, ‘‘and institutions must allow this to happen.” The facts concerning education today point to the urgent need for innovation, for the adaptation of the education system to the needs of the student rather than demanding that the student fit himself into a rigid and obsolete pattern Obituary The late Mrs.Oscar Dupuis Relatives and friends mourn the both teaches too much and too little.Emphasis on degrees must lessen.Emphasis on real learning that enhances the quality of living must increase. Our children are questionning a system that is no longer serving their needs. If we who are parents and taxpayers can work creatively with educators and administrators, more relevant educational programs can be offered. Then the youg will not longer ask, What's in the educational system for me?Education that satisfies a personal need requires no other reward.Yours truly, Keitha K.MacIntosh.Ormstown Mr.and Mrs.A.K.English have arrived home after a their high school leaving certificates at Friday night's graduation exercises. This compares with 152, four years ago.The increase is in part due to the large grade eight enrollment in 67-68 of 238 pupils. The school board and administration has awarded a certificate to all grade eleven students who have accumulated a minimum of 25 credits in grades IX, X & XI, including three years English, (6 credits) 2 years French (4 credits) and 1 year of mathematies (2 credits). In the past, the system has been unfair to the brilliant student who was able to maintain a high average in all subjects but invariably failed French. The present system requires only two years of French.Credits are obtained in the following way.If a student follows a course which requires attending class every day, (i.e.English) he will have earned two credits.a subject which requires a minimum of three classes a week is worth one credit. The system works for the short vocational classes as well as the full time student. Many young people have expressed a desire to return to classes to further their skills in a special trade.Graduation ceremonies will begin at 8:15 p.m.on Friday, September 10.Graduates are asked to be at the school at or before cight o'clock and report to their former home room. The guest speaker will be Mr.Andy Barrie, popular CJAD radio personality. The ‘student of the year’ is Randy Rennie of Huntingdon who has won the Reeves Scholarship for highest standing in final exams.Randy's marks were 87 plus, an excellent achievement for grade 11.Names of other scholarship and
