a 40 acre tract of land in the northwest section of town from Bouchette Enterprises was concluded Monday morning by representatives of the development firm and the Huntingdon Baseball Promoters. The latter group has decided to go it alone on the purchase and development of the field without financial help from the Municipality. The contract is expected to be signed this week, and marks the first the increasing centralization in Quebec agriculture i$ Alec Holzgang of St-Etienne.And the 27 year-old dairy and cash crop producer has joined up with a new organization of several hu hundred other last year or so, Chateauguay Valley farmers and orchardists are beginning to take a serious look at organic and “natural” farm practices which could save them money.A meeting on this subject held Wednesday evening March 13 at the Huntingdon Legion, drew over 75 people interested in learning more about alternative soil management techniques. The information meeting was sponsored by Peter Dagg of Huntingdon and Eaton Valley Agricultural Services of Sawyerville, and Dagg said later that he was surprised at the size of the turn-out.“The methods discussed are nothing new - they are a revival using modern techniques, and are well- known and widely used in Europe, and increasingly in the United States and Canada,” he said, giving as an example some mixed dairy farmers in the across Quebec, were sown during the time of sporadic protests by some farmers aginst the passage of two controversial pieces of farm legislation: Bill 90 on agricultural zoning, and Bill 116 on farm marketing.“Many farmers felt at that time that there was some kind of trade-off taking place between the U.P.A.and the government to get the two laws in force - the former wanted the marketing bill and the latter the zoning. And because many who disagreed fundamentally with one or the other or both could not make their voices heard, we became aware of the dangers of centralizing power in one organization,” Holzgang told The Gleaner.Out of this feeling of frustration the A.C.Q.was born in the Beauce region and held its first general meeting in Levis in December 1979.“The group is preoccupied with the lack of autonomy of, and injustices toward, the individual farmer,’ said Holzgang, pointing to the fact that the U.P.A.is guaranteed by law its position as the only legal animals. The plan is not compuls but in order for the PoC be established in any one of the given zones a majority of | the producers must join the program, Merson said.“The rate is much lower than react to the difficulties faced by them that incited the government to impose a tutorship, said Lepage.Police.from page 1 cars were estimated at under $250 each.Ste-Martine QPP this week reported the arrest of two men in connection with a March 7 attempted robbery of a video system and a portable television from Ormstown’s Greig Hardware. The pair, who entered the store about 4 p.m.and attempted to simply walk out a back exit carrying the merchandise, were picked up by police on March 10 in the Ste-Martine area. The license number of their car had been noted buy store personnel.Robert Huet, 25, and Alain Matte, 19, both from the Montreal region, will stand trial in Valleyfield on March 28.Two other men arrested with them were released but will make a court appearance at a later date, police said.“All this is costing the consumer money in the long run.” His view is that A.C.Q.members are held together by a common belief in free enterprise and the need for decent decentralizing power in the agricultural bureaucracy. He would like to see a continuing dialogue among the A.C.Q.the U.P.A.,, and the government.Though Holzgang himself is fluently bilingual, he would like to see the new A.C.Q.newspaper include material in English.“But it seems before we cando this, we must get a special permit from the government to .publish material in English.” This is just one more example of the type of thing which makes Alec Holzgang angry with the status quo.“The A.C.Q.is certainly not a bunch of fanatics as some people have tried to describe us.We just want to protect the right of farmers when the U.P.A., the government, or anyone else tries to push through things which we consider are wrong.” Soil.from page 1 methods, are interested in the Valley area, because the soil here, in comparison with such areas as St- Hyacinthe, is not yet completely worn out by concentrated high- chemical farming and many years of one crop - corn’’, Dagg said.Three speakers at the Huntingdon meeting outlined various aspects of rotational farming and ‘“*natural’’ fertilizers, which do not undergo additional chemical processing to ensure immediate release into the soil.Joe Smillie of the Eaton Valley firm spoke on principles of soil management, crop rotation, soil balancing, and the use of green manure.Concentrated seaweed used as a foliar spray and kelp meal as a mineral supplement for livestock were discussed by Bob Morse of Waldshoro, Maine, where seaweed products for agricultural use have been manufac- turned since the late 19th century.Last to speak was Bart Hall-Beyer, a Macdonald College soil expert, and until recently manager of the Blair Farm estate at Rockburn. His topic was the use of colloidal phosphate and the presence of trace elements in the soil.A question and answer period followed.WHITE INSURANCE INC.ROMA TREMBLAY AN ESTABLISHED, EXPERIENCED AND COMPETENT INSURANCE tingdon. It's a sign of progress; a sign that the businessmen of the town want thelr community to grow and prosper as we enter the 80s.We seem to remember that Huntingdon had such a group some years ago, but we haven't heard anything about it for quite a while.Perhaps the charter still exists, though, and that may be the reason the new chamber has started out with the designation junior. The new group may be junior in name, but we're sure it will be senior in .achievement.The project is still in the organizational stage and thus hasn't had the opportunity to set many specific goals. The founders have said, though, that it wouldn’t be a social club, but a working one. That's fine.We already have clubs covering most leisure-time activities, as well as service clubs which do a fine job in their fields. But there has been a vacuum in the area specifically devoted to industry, trade and commerce. It is hoped that the new group will get widespread support. The Town Council, our major industries, and smaller businesses right down to the corner store, as well as the professional people should get behind the effort. So far, the objectives mentioned by the infant organization seem commendably realistic.Coordinating the opening and closing hours of local stores, whenever possible, is one policy which will work to the benefit of shoppers. The organization of multi-store sidewalk sales or other special attractions would add an occasional festive air to the town's business section, Eventually, an up-and-coming Chamber of Commerce could prove a drawing card to new businesses and perhaps even to industry.Huntingdon already has good transportation facilities, serviced land available, and a fine labor supply. Some municipalities a bit bigger than Huntingdon have a city manager, a town employee who divides his time between overseeing the efficiency of the municipal operation and seeking out new business.Huntingdon probably isn’t quite ready for such a move yet, and the cost can be quite high. But it’s an idea for the future when we've grown a bit more.In the meantime we're sure we can benefit by the many skills of businessman volunteers. The more industry and commerce we have in town the larger will be our tax base. The broader the tax base the lower the burden will be on the established institutions. It is in everyone's interest, therefore, to get behind the new group.FIRST THE GOOD NEWS.A few weeks ago in a Letter to The Editor a reader said that one of the reasons he generally liked The Gleaner was the fact that we concentrated on good news and left the bad to the daily Press and the TV.Just by coincidence the other day we came across an echo of our reader's thoughts in a comment Jrom no less a personage than the Archbishop of York. His Grace was ayoted as denouncing the bad news presented by newspapers.Enough of the endless violence, strident speeches, picketing and threats of war, he said.Let's have cheerful news, he sald, ‘such as a Yorkshire farmer ploughing his fields.” We hope it won't be long before we are able to report that Valley farmers are starting to work their fields [we don't do much Spring ploughing].When the item appears, perhaps we should send the Archbishop a clipping. However, The Gleaner, like every newspaper, tries to give its subscribers the news they want to read. It's only common sense. The more people who are interested in what we report the greater our readership, and thus our fortunes. This is a simple fact of the ‘economics of publishing and applies in London and Paris and Pongo Pongo as well as in the Valley. At times it is difficult to print "only good news without distorting the facts of life.Without the horror and torture and violence of Good Friday there would not have been the jubilation of Easter.Without the gruesomeness of war there is no exultation of peace.Without the sadness of a loved one being at death's door there can be no thanksgiving in a recovery to health. Our network of fine correspondents assures us that people like to read about meetings of the many church societies, migsionary institutes and so on throughout our area. These reports admittedly are not everyone's cup of tea, and the interest in each is limited to a comparatively small area, but we try to record as many as possible. We were interested to note that members of the Franklin Women's Institute at a recent meeting answered the roll call with a piece of good news concerning themselves.Such events included a healed finger and a repaired TV set. These are not exactly earth-shattering events, but we duly recorded them. Then there is the dilemma of ‘good news for whom?’ If a Valley farmer's cow had a two-headed calf, that's bad news for the calf and for the farmer, for such freaks don't live long. But we at The Gleaner might consider it good news because many of our subscribers would be at least mildly interested in reading about it, and perhaps even seesing a picture. Then there are our editorials.Generally we try to present a point of view about current events which affect the Valley. These writings sometimes spark a Letter to the Editor disagreeing with our stand. That's fine; it shows that people are reading our little paper and taking an interest in the things which concern all of us.We get more cons than pros, but editors know that if people are satisfied or agree they are seldom stirred up enough to write and say so.We certainly don’t set out to dissent, but differences of opinion are a cornerstone of democracy. And we like to remember that our founder, Robert Sellar, often disagreed with his readers. He was strongly against Confederation, for instance.Wa wonder what he’d think about the referendum debate today?— ~~ — == >.RYAN Letters MP helps realize long-deferred visit I would like Chateauguay Valley people to know just how much help can be obtained by an individual from our government representatives in ironing out problems of red tape.I have not seen my brother, who lives in Rhodesia, for 20 years. Finally, we planned a get- together in Canada, which would also allow me to meet his wife and two children. But there were problems surrounding his getting a visa to visit this country. After several delays, I contacted our federal M.P.Gérald Laniel at his Valleyfield office. He got in touch with Ottawa, and the government in turn contacted Johannessburg in South Africa. The next news I had was a phone call from Ottawa saying that my brother received his travel visa early in January, and will arrive for the visit on April 23.The government spokesperson said if there was anything else they could do they would be pleased to help.I would like to give “a bouquet of thanks’ responsables de la récréation à Huntingdon.
