But we correspond regularly, and I\u2019ll be back.A few years ago I attended a testimonial of sorts tendered IAN HUME who taught math and other subjects at CCHS, while still finding time to organize sports and coach scores of young athletes at school and at the local Community Sports Association.The basis for the testimonial?IAN had somehow also found the time to coach a local gals\u2019 basketball team to a dominion cham-pionship* no less.IAN HUME was one of my personal heroes.I well recall him in his youth - tall and skinny, he looked less like an athlete than I do, and yet he was one of the top track & field stars in the province - as the absolute top performer with (and this may surprise some of you Johnny-come-lately types) the then powerful Montreal Police A.A.A.team.Of cquc-se that was well before such a thing as PiH 22 came into being.IAN and his lovely wife are now hale and hearty and happy in retirement - and working harder than ever -at their cosy little retreat in the Townships.If you happen read this, IAN, please drop us a line.More contemporarily, let me mention just a couple of heroes of mine on the current teaching scene - MURRAY McDonald of Champlain Regional, and JIMMY MAR-TINf formerly at Le-moyne d\u2019Iberville and more latterly out at McMasterville.Just last year, MURRAY and his Science class were working hard on a scale-model project based on the Courier\u2019s fond hopes of opening our Great Leaders\u2019 eyes to the obvious advantages of double-decking the Champlain Bridge in order to make life a lot easier for all of us - all without costing the taxpayer a nickel since the Champlain is a toll-bridge.(shades of Drapeau!) MURRAY was heart-broken (me, too) when last year\u2019s school-term disaster forced dropouts of some key students on the project, and created other problems resulting in dropping the project for the nonce.Last time 1 Met JIMMY MARTIN was one wild wintry Saturday morning when we were both marooned in one of the worst snow- storms ever to hit the area, with all all traffic ordered off the roads.As we took refuge in a St.Hubert coffee-shop, I learned that JIMMY had been on the go for some early-morning hours, vainly attempting to round up a school hockey team to play a game scheduled to be played at McMasterville.JIMMY taught phys.ed.and other subjects at Lemoyne d\u2019Iberville, but still found time for these worthwhile volunteer activities.Good old Lemoyne has not been the same morale-wise or athletically and in many other areas since JIMMY departed the local scene.Other great and dedicated teachers I have known and admired down the years would LE COURRIER DU SUD / Mercredi, 15 include \u201cWin\u201d Shufelt, Hobart Green, Earl Templeton, John Orr, Hazel Cross, Miss McElrae, Mr.Ryder -and all the way back to Miss Vaudry, Miss Webb, Miss Norris and Mr.Rivard at the old Longueuil \u201cModel\u201d School, once located right on the boundaries of Longueuil and \u201cthe South\u201d, on the present (south-east site of the Place Longueuil parking lot.Just one more shot in providing some sort of an insight into my emotional background with regard to teachers, before I launch into my intended blast at some of the younger male spoiled brats currently huddling away from life in the cosy sheltered atmosphere of the ongoing scholastic scene, while forever blaming you, me, the school boards and \u201cthe goovam\u2019nt\u201d for their own personal frustrations.SHEILA HICKS w as never (to my knowledge) a teacher in the official school board system, but she taught voice and general music to thousands of young folks of the St.Lambert area over a \u2022\u2022pt«mbrt 1976 \u2014 Pag* B3 half-century or so.She also found time (her own volunteer time) to organize, produce and direct dozens of lovely musicals \u2022 including Gilbert & Sullivan and Victor Herbert classics, involving perhaps another thousand or so appreciative South Shore young people.These productions presented at the old High School auditorium, were a popular and vital feature of South Shore life up until a dozen or so years ago when TV addiction knocked this more wholesome form of cultural awareness for a loop.Today, well up in her 80\u2019s, SHEILA is still teaching.Now she has groups of Golden Agers under her musical wing - choruses and choirs and invididual performers -and I hear she\u2019s doing another fantastic job.Which comes as no surprise to those who know our SHEILA.With limited time and space, this windy introduction to my intended spiel aimed at SOME of today\u2019s sad-sack teacher population is all I can handle for the moment.More -plenty more -
