To make space for the brand new permanent exhibition to be installed this summer in the Eaton Corner Museum church building (the former Congregationalist Church built in 1841), many items in the collection have to be moved into temporary storage. When it’s ready, the new exhibit will trace the early settlement of the Eastern Townships through the perspective of the Eaton Corner area. Many objects from the Museum’s valuable and unique collections will depict life in the village from its founding in the early 1800s.The Museum hopes the new exhibit will be installed in time to invite the public to a grand opening during this year’s season.Working together Museum President Marc Nault and the Building Committee have been giving a lot of their time to work on the Museum site in Eaton Corner.Much work has been done this summer clearing and cleaning up the land behind the Foss House, creating heritage gardens, and preparing the inside of the building for Museum space. The old shed attached to the house is original and the structure will be made safe for the public to explore the original timber frame construction techniques (as well as the two- seater backhouse used right up through the 1960s).A new reception area for the Museum will be located in the Foss House.Work on the reception area and the construction of a parking lot off Laberee Road is expected to be done this year place.Enjo newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com | “The Record Eaton Corner Museum working on many projects COURTESY Wearing cotton gloves to protect the objects, volunteers Chantal Bolduc and Lise Houle move this portrait to a safe ing the ride is Emily Cummings Williams, daughter of Benjamin A.Williams and Jane Cummings, born in Bulwer in 1849.She married Norman Walley in 1870 in the Church when it was the Eaton Congregational Church.thanks to funding and labour from the Town of Cookshire- Eaton.Summer activities While the Museum is closed to the public this summer, the programme of events and workshops including the annual event Old Fashioned Day is still scheduled for Sunday afternoon August 4, at the Cookshire Fair Grounds. There will be demonstrations and exhibits of over 30 different heritage skills, crafts, and antique tools and machinery, horse and wagon rides, and home made scones and jam for all visitors. Also, gardening workshops continue through the summer. The next one is on Saturday morning July 13 about “Building and Maintaining Soil Fertility in the Garden,” with Brian Creelman. Please call the Museum to register or for information about all the workshops.Other topics include composting, medicinal plants, and seed preservation. These workshops are a “natural” extension of the Heritage Garden initiative.Sustainable gardening practices and seed preservation were crucial to the survival of the early settlers in our region, so the Museum is demonstrating these practices in the gardens behind the Foss House.Discovering the perennial flowers which have survived on the site has been one of the pleasant surprises for the “green team” as they develop - the Heritage Gardens. One of the gardens being maintained this year is a heritage kitchen garden.À small assortment of vegetables and medicinal herbs are grown including Green Mountain potatoes, Calais corn, Cranberry beans, turnips, and beets.Culinary and medicinal herbs are there, too.The early settlers would have grown all these to feed their families through the summer, and would have preserved them to tide them over the winter.Watch for details of a Community Harvest Lunch in the Fall.Hopes are to expand the garden to represent what people would have been growing and eating in the 1800s.Other museum news A presentation by Mr.Burton McConnell, formerly of Clifton, drew a good turnout to the Annual General Meeting of the Eaton Corner Museum on May 24.His lively and entertaining description of life in East Clifton in the late 1800s was based on his reading of the diaries of Sheepskin Joe Taylor (1842-1931) compiled by Mildred Waldron, as well as on other research he has done. With humour and personal anecdotes, McConnell was able to give a good picture of the times and how they have changed.Guided by the content of the diaries, he discussed topics as diverse as the axes.and other tools Taylor used, crops he grew and maple syrup he made (1,300 pounds of sugar from 1,000 trees in 1872, using cedar buckets and boiling in cast iron pots), his livestock, social and church activities, rolling the roads in winter and the advent of the railway, including Taylor’s comments on the Hereford Railway Riot after the abuse of the Italian workers, and anecdotes about Cormic Gray, the “meanest man in Clifton.” À copy of Mr.McConnell’s interesting presentation is available at the Museum. At the Annual General Meeting, elections were held for members of the Board of Directors of the Eaton Corner Museum.Elected to serve a two year term ending in 2015 were : Peter Banks, Keith Bennett, Jacqueline Hyman, Elaine Lebourveau, and Sharon Moore.Presently serving a two year term ending in 2014 are Marc Nault, Pat Boychuck, Serena Wintle, Charles Bury, Steven Lepitre, and Chantal Bolduc. At a meeting of the Board on June 19, the following executive officers were appointed until 2014: President Marc Nault, Vice President Pat Boychuck, Secretary Jacqueline Hyman, Treasurer Elaine Lebourveau, Past President Charles Bury.Source: Jackie Hyman.Conteneurs Rock Forest loses authorization Record Staff SHERBROOKE T= Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, Wildlife, and Parks (MDDEFP) has revoked the authorization certificates of the company Conteneurs Rock Forest Inc.(CRF), located at 9150 Boulevard Bourque in Sher brooke. The first certificate was issued in October 2007 for the operation of the business and a second in February 2013 for the grinding of wood. These revocations mean that the company can no longer perform its related construction, renovation, and demolition waste-sorting operation activities, both on its site and elsewhere.Following three MDDEPP orders in recent months CRF was prohibited from receiving material to be sorted on its site and was ordered to reduce the significant piles of accumulated material on its site amounting to 7,500 metric tons per month, the company did not comply. The objectives of these orders were to ensure the company's compliance with its certificate of authorization of October 2007 to reduce the risk of potential contamination to the environment and to recover or remove the piles of material by October 2013.As a result of this ongoing non-compliance, CRF was served with the notice of revo- certificate cation on June 19 under sections 115.5 and 115.10 of the Act on the quality of the environment, Accordingly, a tender was launched June 27, 2013 to proceed with the elimination of certain piles of waste to ensure that the site is safe and to reduce the risk of environmental contamination.Wish an athlete good luck during the Canada Games in August Congratulations to “Athlete's Name” “The Hometown” is cheering for you Send your requests by July 31, 2013 to: aderrah@sherbrookerecord.com The Record would like to help you send along good wishes to YOUR athlete at the Canada Summer Games from August 2-17.Your wishes will be placed on a “Good Wish Board” daily in The Record throughout the games.Just send: Name of athlete, week athlete will be participating, message you want to send, your contact info, logo of your school, business or town, and credit card information. The cost is only $25.plus taxes. Page 6 FRIDAY, JULY 5, 2013 us va 440 RIE Cee CS STILL : te Ison newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record By Francois Tanguay very July one, we move.We FE: in a certain manner, modern day nomads.Moving trucks are backed onto front lawns, over sidewalks, alleyways and all over the place. On a good year it doesn’t rain, making the operation less painful, as was the case this year.We use cars, trucks, rentals, trailers and even bicycles to help move our belongings. One thing sadly has not changed and in fact has gotten worse: We wake up on July 2 with the remains of what used to be our precious home goods just a few hours before.Like so many casualties of our transient urgen- cies.It is amazing that so many mattresses, ovens, sofas, desks, tables and chairs go from being ‘essentials’ to becoming waste in just a matter of hours. The junk that was part of a home just the day before is left for us to question what could have happened? What does it say about what we are as a civilization? What makes it so hard to keep what we have worked and indebted ourselves for?How can essentials become waste so quickly? Is this what the material world has become: A dump in waiting?Riding my bicycle along the streets this week I was overtaken by a sense of sadness.Yet with a truck at a person's disposal it would be easy to pick-up, for free, the entire furnishings of a house in a matter of hours, picking out the best from the lot. That was actually done by a CBC crew a couple of years ago.As we draw ever so nearer to the climate deadlines it is a great opportunity to reconsider a few things with regards to what we own and what happens when we decide to leave it to rot on the sidewalks.Maybe we should reconsider ownership, period. As far as I'm concerned I couldn't care less if I rented my electric appliances.Washer, dryer, dishwasher, water heater and even TV are all devices I seek, not goods I long to own.I'd be content to rent all of the items for a monthly fee (it would include service) with the provision that after so many years I would get better performing appliances and be assured that the old ones would be either dismantled or rewired and sold cheap to the needy. The other issue of great concern is that all this waste is dumped for free. There should be a price set on dumping the bigger items. We should have to pay for the extra work and most of alt for the recycling andjor the space they take up in our landfills. We are slowly getting used to the idea of a carbon tax, or a few extra bucks to cover for the cost of recycling old tires.Maybe it is time to consider the same for household appliances.Waste is energy in so many ways.It is more than time we have a price put on the lost opportunities. It’s called an efficient way to use nature’s resources and it should by no means be free.STEVEN BLACK ing.Now that summer has arrived and rain drops have ceased long enough for us to do more in the great outdoors besides race between our cars and our houses I want to recommend two good books, the books of Nature and the Bible. For generations people have considered the world and the skies and have seen there the imprint of God.How can we not?Nature’s beauty and order that allows for us to live and enjoy it demonstrates a kind of grace filled harmony that speaks of remarkable design.Consider DNA.Its instructions to build the-proteins and mechanisms that make the vastly diverse realm of living things possible have caused many scientists to conclude that these are the unmistakable proofs of a Creator. As much as the convinced atheistic scientist insists that there must be an explanation for the beginning of such life and that we will discover it someday, new discoveries do little to point us in that direction.Instead they make explanations apart from God more elusive. Moreover, we know that there is a fine tuning of the universe that is built into the very laws of physics without which life as we know it is impossible, Apart from our being lucky beyond description there must be a Tuner. The more we learn it becomes impossible to believe that ours is an aimless, godless and pointless universe.Logic tells us that our Universe that began one day demands a Creator.A thing with a beginning cannot create itself before it exists.People have long known this but some in the West such as Richard Dawkins with their sense of superiority have decided we are above all such humans. We have decreed ourselves to be the enlightened “Brights” of a more evolved humanity. However, should we see through such arrogance, we might realize that the vast majority of cultures have been convinced of another reality. The majority opinion is that there is a God.We who declare otherwise are in a small minority. Some will say that the world, if it Ji: to recommend some summer read- ————E meet is created, is a cruel place and cer- RECORD PO.Box 1200 Sherbrooke J1H 5L6 or 1195 is the worst thing we have ever invented. For such people to look and see only beauty and order is to be willfully blind to the chaos and violence all around us.Of course we must concede there is cruelty and suffering in the world. There are devastating natural disasters taking place daily that cause suffering and death among humans and other feeling beings. This is exactly what i eT ew a.se ate a eue one would expect to see in a pointless universe where luck is the only reason for existence and survival the only hope. However, doesn’t our very assumption that there is injustice and this injustice invalidates claims of a just God actually do the opposite? Objective justice demands a basis for justice beyond our own fabrication. It points to a necessary Maker. Our deeply held conviction that justice is real points us to a God who planted a sense of justice in our consciences otherwise it is merely an illusion that benefits the survival of human animals. Is it not true that even most devoted atheists insist on justice when it comes to their own interests? Many compassionate atheists fight for the just interest of others too. There is a natural impulse that insists on our living as «though there is something called “moral” and “just” beyond our own making. We act as if these were objective and real. This is a Love and Justice that better reflects a loving and just God than an indifferent cosmos. If this were not so, there is nothing morally wrong with a person or group of people perpetrating acts of terror on others by their own whim and for their own aim.Sure, we could argue whether these things are enough to point to God and justify our worship of any particular God.Many have said God should write, “I am here and this is my name.” across the heavens in every generation to prove His point. There have been, of course, voices of madmen and saints that have claimed to be shouting “I am here” on God’s behalf. But what if God has personally come and lived among us in human flesh?Billions have made this claim to this day. What if Jesus of Nazareth was the God-man and demonstrated to us what God is like? What if he made it possible for us to know God today? What if people who knew him best wrote about him?, What if these writings are in the Bible?Yes, of late smart people have come along saying, “Oh, I can explain that. You don't have to believe that stuff.” Against mounting evidence for the impressive credentials of the New Testament they will to not believe and try to convince us they are smarter than people like Paul of Tarsus.Every book has its critic but don’t let them deter you, you might be missing some gems. When you have some time walking on the trail, canoeing on the lake or relaxing in your hammock here are two books I highly recommend.First, the book of nature in which there is no end of wonder and variety and one through which countless readers have come to love its Author.Second is the Bible. This book in poetry, adventure, biography and apocalypse unveils through human experience and language the magnificence of God.Like all reading it is important for the "reader to suspend presuppositions in order to enjoy the books on their own terms. This is not silly, mindless credulity but an openness to consider the possibilities of a world that could be more true and real than the fiction you have embraced before.Who knows but you might discover a new favourite Author and perceive the real, God-filled world as never before. theatrics. For 2 1/2 hours, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced “Lone Ranger” inflates, subverts and distorts the conventions of the Western until, in an interminable climax set to the William Tell Overture, the big-budget spectacle finally, exhaustingly collapses in a scrap heap of train wreckage.A talented filmmaker of great excess, Verbinski's ricocheting whimsy here runs off the rails.Flashback-heavy plot mechanics, occasionally grim violence (bullets land in bodies with the loudest of thwacks, a heart gets eaten) and surrealistic comedy add up to a confused tone that seems uncertain exactly how to position Depp’s Tonto in the movie, to say nothing of Armie Hammer's wayward Lone Ranger. When Verbinski was last directing and Depp was a cartoon lizard, they crafted a far better Western in “Rango.” PG-13 for sequences of intense action and violence, and some suggestive material.Running time: 149 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.‘The Way, Way Back’ Jocelyn Noveck AP National Writer Ta something inherently formulaic about summer coming-of: age movies.A quirky, awkward, misunderstood kid finds a way — at the beach or by the pool — to, well, come of age, often with the help of an equally quirky adult. And that’s precisely what happens here.Luckily, the film, written and directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash — screenplay Oscar winners for “The Descendants” — is done with enough skill and delicacy that its adherence to formula doesn’t matter so much.Fourteen-year-old Duncan (newcomer Liam James) reluctantly heads for a beach vacation with divorced mom Pam (Toni Collette) and her boyfriend, Trent, an unlikable character played by the likable Steve Carell. At a water park, the lonely boy finds companionship with wise-cracking manager Owen (a terrific Sam Rockwell).Back at the beach, Carell manages to make Trent interesting even as you hate him, and CONT'D ON PAGE 17 TALK | TV Listings on furniture dollies, in Radio Flyer wagons or nestled carefully in owners’ arms. The hodge-podge parade consists of paintings, teapots, firearms, mannequins decked out in military uniforms and more.Much more.Grade-schoolers have show-and-tell for their treasures. The adult counterpart is PBS’ “Antiques Roadshow,” which has become an institution as it approaches its 18th season and holds fast as public television's highest-rated series. That's right: It’s No.1.Not glamorous, romantic “Downton Abbey,” but homespun and earnest “Antiques Roadshow,” where Civil War firearms, Tiffany lamps and autographed baseball cards are the stars.Even Kevin Bacon watches it, which he admits in an on-air PBS promo. As the show hopscotches from US city to city, each stop draws some 6,000 people and the one or two possessions they believe are — or, wishful thinking, might be — worth afew minutes of TV airtime and a lot of money. But what they're most eager for is background on their items and validation that their family heirloom or garage-sale find is special, said longtime executive producer Marsha Bemko. It’s rare that any piece featured on “Roadshow,” no matter how valuable, ends up being sold.“People are so excited about what they own and so eager to learn about it,” she said.“Most walk out knowing more than when they came in.” And the audience gets to share in that enlightenment.“It’s a very human and universal thing to understand ourselves and our objects help us to do that,” Bemko said.As part of an eight-city tour for the new season that begins airing next January, “Roadshow” arrived recently in Anaheim, southeast of Los Angeles and home to Disneyland. For one busy day, the grey cement floor of a convention centre became a field of dreams.Maybe that black-and-white drawing discovered hiding behind granddad’s painting will turn out to be a rare 16th- century century print of “The Crucifixion” by Tintoretto.(It did, with an estimated post-restoration value of up to $15,000.) “I've always debated with mom whether it was real,” said its owner, 36- year-old Jason (PBS asked that last names be withheld for privacy and security). He figured it had to be a fake because a date, 1569, was carefully noted in one corner. What did he expect to hear when he tells his mother the news?“I told you so,” he said, smiling. Then there was the piece plucked from the trash in the 1970s.An appraiser sized it up as folk art by Joseph Cornell, one of his famed shadow-box displays, and worth up to $150,000 at auction if authenticated.From-the sublime to the cheerfully ridiculous, there was the stuffed duck that served as Groucho Marx's prop on his 1950s game show “You Bet Your Life.” Purchased for $250 in 1986, an appraiser gave it an auction value of up to $12,000.The lucky Anaheim visitors were among those who sent in 24,278 requests for 3,000 pairs of tickets distrib uted through a random drawing.Local public TV stations have other tickets that serve as donation premiums.Getting in is one thing; getting on TV requires more gantlet-running.The action starts at the so-called “triage tables,” where visitors are directed to the best section and experts for their belongings: A 1930s Mickey Mouse wristwatch is sent to collectibles, for example, rather than timepieces.Orderly lines form for the stations that include rugs and textiles, jewellery, firearms and furniture. Then comes a big hurdle: Will an appraiser consider an item or the story behind it intriguing enough to pitch to the show’s producers for an on-camera segment? It’s not necessarily rarity or a big price tag that will guarantee success.‘ “We are not easy to impress. We've turned down $200,000 items where the guest knows everything. We want storytelling; we're a TV show.We want the drama of the guest learning something,” producer Bemko said. That's done with viewers in mind.“If you're not excited by the object because you don’t know what it is,” she said, you will be after you're schooled in its history. The crowd is friendly, not competitive, with a fair amount of mutual oohing-and-ahhing.Autograph-seekers extend their admiration to host Mark L.Walberg and volunteer appraisers including twins Leigh and Leslie Keno, who are very familiar to hardcore fans.Leslie Keno, a Sotheby's veteran, said he values the chance to use material goods as a jumping-off point for lessons in history and culture.Plus, he said, “Antiques Roadshow” is a treasure hunt “that comes to me.” The series is based on the UK version that’s in its fourth decade and has spawned versions in other countries. The US one, produced by WGBH Boston and currently in “vintage” reruns, has visited all but a handful of states (hang in there, Maine, Wyoming and New Hampshire). This year’s tour started in June with Detroit; Jacksonville, Fla., Boise, Idaho, and Anaheim, and moves on to Knoxville, Tenn., Baton Rouge, La., Kansas City, Mo., and Richmond, Va.Although Bemko had expected the Southern California stop would draw a fair amount of Hollywood-related memorabilia, she was surprised at those toting it.Two pairs of Buddy Ebsen’s shoes, one of them worn by the actor in “The Beverly Hillbillies,” were brought in by his widow.Appraised value for insurance purposes: $20,000.4 News Newschannel 5 T at Salut, bonjour! County coroner’s office in Nevada. In a statement posted on its website, the office says the death of Sarah Guil- lot-Guyard was accidental and related to multiple blunt force trauma. The 31-year-old woman died after she fell more than 25 metres while performing in front of an audience at Las Vegas's MGM Grand hotel. The coroner’s office says the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration is continuing an investigation into the accident and it could take up to six months to complete.Witnesses told the Las Vegas Sun that the accident occurred during a fight scene near the end of the “Ka,” which combines acrobatics with martial arts and puppetry.Visitor Dan Mosqueda of Colorado Springs, Colo., said Guillot-Guyard was being hoisted up the side of the stage when it appeared that she detached from her safety wire and plummeted to an open pit below the stage. The show momentarily continued, then stopped.Minutes after the accident, a recorded announcement informed audience members that refunds or vouchers to future shows would be of fered, and the crowd was dismissed. The founder of Cirque du Soleil said in a statement that his tight-knit performance company is “completely devastated” by the death of the 31-year-old performer.“I am heartbroken,” Guy Laliberte said.“We are reminded with great humility and respect how extraordinary our artists are each and every night. Our focus now is to support each other as a family.” While Cirque performers soar over audiences, scale vertical walls and dangle aloft in aerial ballets — the incident was the first stage casualty in the company’s 29-year history, according to Cirque spokeswoman Renee-Claude Menard.Guillot-Guyard, a mother of two, had been with the original cast of “Ka” since 2006.Barn in Paris, she is also listed as the head coach at Cirquefit, a program that offers acrobatic fitness classes for children.Movie Review CONT'D FROM PAGE 10 Collette is heartbreaking as a single mom desperate to give her son a stable ‘ife. Also noteworthy: Allison Janney as a neighbour with an absurdly dark tan.The movie ends up feeling a bit like sumner itself: À little lacking in structure, vut full of small memorable moments — and you're sad when it’s over.PG-13 for thematic elements, language, sexual content and brief drug material.103 minutes.Three stars out of four.newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com July 5 The Piggery welcomes back Serge Bedrossian performing “Idols” on Friday, July 5 at 8 p.m.Tickets: he worked for a fundraiser for McGill University where he also helped coached the McGill Martlets basketball team with former teammate Ryan Thorne. He returned to Lennoxville a few years ago to work for Kobelt Transportation.Regardless of where he was or what he was doing, Bishop’s remained an important part of his life.“My years at Bishop's help develop me as a person,” he said Thursday morning.“The guidance and friendships with teachers, administrators, coaches and oo Hiab Undvessity COURTESY OF BISHOP'S UNIVERSITY Robbie Burns came back to Bishop's.students have made [me] what I am today. When I was working at McGill, I was trying to make the school more like Bishop's, to give students the feeling that they were more than just a number.” Over a decade removed from his student days, Burns is back on campus full time as the athletic department’s fundraiser. He has a two-year contract QUEBEC SENIOR ELITE BASEBALL LEAGUE Expos looking for redemption against Big Bill By John Edwards Special to The Record e Sherbrooke Expos have a chance | for redemption this week, as they host their local rivals, the Coati- cook Big Bill, on Friday at Amedée Roy stadium, with first pitch set for 8 p.m.The Expos suffered a pair of tough losses to the Big Bill two weekends ago that left them in a battle for top spot in the Quebec Senior Elite Baseball League. The Expos (10-4) are 1 games ahead of Thet- ford Mines and 2 up on Coaticook in the East race, as the season finally reaches the halfway point on Friday night.Sherbrooke comes into the weekend having won two of their past three games, most recently a 3-2 come-from-be- hind win at Victoriaville on Wednesday. The Expos used a wild pitch, a fielding error and a sacrifice fly to score two runs in the top of the seventh without the benefit of a hit after the Cactus had broken a 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth.Sherbrooke was held to only two hits in Wednesday's pitching duel, most notably Alexandre Gauthier’s second home run of the year.Jonathan Paré pitched four no-hit innings for Victoriaville and took the loss as he allowed two runs (one earned). The Expos’ Samuel Brousseau pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits and allowing only one run.He walked five and struck out five.Earlier in the week, the Expos suffered a 3-1 defeat on Canada Day at Thet- ford Mines. The crowd of 6,500 came anticipating fireworks, but had to wait until the post-game show as once again the pitchers dominated.Michel Simard pitched a complete game for the Blue Sox, allowing only three hits, while Samuel Ouellet was unlucky to get the loss, as he pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and two runs (one earned).Thetford Mines took advantage of a throwing error on a double play ball to break a 1-1 tie and score the winning run in the sixth inning, The Expos started last weekend with a 7-4 home win over Victoriaville on Thursday and were rained out on Friday at Coaticook.Ouellet will get the ball on Friday night. He is 1-2 with a 3.23 ERA and opponents are hitting only 0.247 against him. With only five hits in their past two games, the Expos’ offence remains a concern for veteran manager Steve with the goal of raising money to furnish equipment for the new sports complex, which is slated to open in the spring of 2014.“People don’t realize that while the government pays for the building, we have to supply all the equipment,” Bishop's Athletic Director Brian Breckles said.“For example we have to buy the equipment used in the weight and fit- Oleschuk. The Expos have dropped to seventh in the league offensively, with a 0.273 team batting average, leaving their third-rated pitching staff with little margin for error.” © After tonight's game against the Big Bill, the Expos head to St.Jerome on Sat- to give "back to Bishop's.There are some exciting ness rooms, stands for the new basketball court, a new Zamboni for the rink. Not everything is going to be ready when the building opens so we need to prioritize.” And raise the money to pay for the purchases; Individual knuckle and finger joints may also be replaced.People with rheumatoid arthritis are most likely to benefit from a total wrist replacement, but it can also help people with osteoarthritis or traumatic arthritis.Wrist replacement is major surgery and recovery takes several weeks. If you're considering joint replacement, weigh the benefits and risks.Age is an important factor. But the final decision is based on your level of pain and how much your wrist stiffness and pain limit your activities.Wrist replacement surgery may be a good option if one or more of the following apply to you: : — You cannot complete normal daily tasks without help.— You have significant pain every day.— Pain keeps you awake at night despite the use of medications.- Nonsurgical approaches have not relieved your pain.— Less-complicated surgical procedures are unlikely to help.— Pain keeps you from doing daily activities or your job.— Pain doesn’t subside when you rest.— You suffer severe side effects from the medications.Joint replacement surgery is one of the great advances of medicine in the past 40 years.I speak as a grateful recipient of a hip replacement.(Dr.Komaroff is a physician and professor at Harvard Medical School. To send questions, go to AskDoctorK.com, or write: Ask Doctor K, 10 Shattuck St., Second Floor, Boston, MA 02115.) Page 22 FriDAY, JULY 5, 2013 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com | The Record I told my parents that my grandmother would rather I secure a job than attend her funeral FRIDAY, JULY 5, 2013 Dear Annie: My grandmother died the day before I was scheduled for an important job interview.I'd received notice two weeks prior, and it said there would be no rescheduling of the interview for any reason whatsoever. If I failed to show up, I would be barred from being hired for another year.I was desperate for work, and when my father called to tell me my grandmother died, I told him I was sorry, but there was no way I could make it to the funeral in the morning, although I did go by his house to see him.I went to the interview {and was hired) and went to the house right after.Nobody said anything, but I could tell my family was disappointed.Since the funeral, my parents have been angry with me.! understand this, but work is scarce in my area, and I couldn’t afford to miss this opportunity.Frankly, if I were unemployed, I doubt my parents would give me any money, and it would be foolish to rely on that kind of help anyway.Besides, who wants to have to ask their parents for stuff when they’re 35 years old?I needed this job.I told my parents that my grandmother would rather I secure a job than attend her funeral. But now my relatives are saying nasty things about me behind my back. Was I right to skip the funeral in favor of a job interview?Annie’s Mailbox — Downstate Illinois Dear Illinois: We understand why the job interview could not be postponed, especially for a full year. But we also know that your parents are hurt and maybe a bit embarrassed that their child didn’t show up for Grandma's funeral. You need to apologize, but without simultaneously justifying and defending your choice.Simply say that you are truly sorry, and you hope they can forgive you. Then give them time to do that.Dear Annie: My daughter turned 16 last week.We asked her friends to come to her party, and no one showed up.She was so upset. My daughter is in a special needs life skills classroom with 12 kids just like her.How can their parents be so cruel? It’s so unfair to my child. What can I do about this?— Not So Sweet 16 Party Dear Not So Sweet: It’s very possible that these classmates felt uncomfortable attending your daughter's party and lacked the social skills necessary to say so.Or, if your daughter invited them word-of-mouth, they might have forgotten or the parents were unaware of the time and date. The important thing is your response to your daughter. Please don’t turn this into a tragedy or a reason to badmouth her classmates.Instead, teach your daughter how to graciously cope with these disappointments and move forward. You might even try to reschedule a party for her over the summer, although you might first get in touch with the parents to be sure there are no additional difficulties.Dear Annie: This is in response to “Enlightened,” who threatened to throw her child's things away if she didn’t pick them up.I was a messy daughter growing up, and my mother did exactly that. What she failed to see (and still does not) is that my messy ways, forgetfulness and “laziness” were the result of posttraumatic stress disorder due to years of emotional, sexual and physical abuse.Parents should be careful with how harshly they judge their children, as they are a result of how they are raised.Yelling, arguing and throwing things in garbage bags often do more harm than good.Look for the root cause. There may be more going on than meets the eye.Perhaps she’s being bullied at school or is stressed about grades. No one’ enjoys being messy. It makes our lives more difficult, as well.— Shell-Shocked Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.Wales Home News By: Rebecca Taylor June 2013 - The month of June was filled with activities at the Wales Home. The movie Sister Act 2 was shown on the evening of the 3rd.A World Vision meeting was held on the 4th floor on the afternoon of the 4th.Book reviewer Jim Napier gave a literature talk in the living room on “The Twisted Mind of the Crime Writer” June 5th.A spring vase craft was held in the living room on the afternoon of the 10th.Thank you to Colleen Fraser and her assistants for making the af ternoon fun for the residents.A Father’s Day fishing derby was held on the morning of the 15th.Thirty-four fish were caught! democracy, it’s your vote that counts. In feudalism, it’s your Count that votes.” The more that bridge players count, the better they will play.In yesterday's deal, declarer placed the missing high- card points by referring to the bidding.Today, let’s show a defender doing it to advantage.East is defending against four spades, and West leads the heart 10.What should East do?There are several important points in the bidding. Some players sitting East would add a point for the five-card suit and open one no-trump.But you should strive to find a reason not to open one no- trump when you have a five-card major. Here, having no minor-suit stopper is an excellent reason.South does not like to make a takeout double with 4-3-3-3 distribution, but his hand is a tad too strong to pass.North's cue-bid shows 12-plus points.East wins with the heart jack, cashes the ace, and takes the king, West discarding, say, the diamond three. What should East do next?If West had a minor-suit ace, he should have ruffed the third heart and cashed it (or discarded an encouraging card in that suit). So the defenders are not getting a minor-suit trick.East must try for a trump trick by leading another heart. Here, when West ruffs with the spade eight and dummy overruffs with the 10, suddenly East gains a trump trick.Itis a textbook uppercut.newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com FRIDAY,
