JB (Jean Baptiste) Marion is black and gay, an aspiring artist; Willem Ragnarsson is the budding actor in the group who arrived at the college from Wyoming, and now works in New York at the requisite waiter job and goes to auditions. He has left behind the memory of his deceased, severely disabled older brother to whom he was very devoted, and emotionally distant Scandinavian-born parents. Finally, there is the enigmatic law student Jude St.Francis, arguably the most intelligent and talented of the group, but someone who has a deeply mysterious, murky past.Jude suffers serious, recurring problems with his legs, which he attributes to a car accident, and has never let his friends see him without a shirt. As the book proceeds and the years roll on, more characters are introduced, including Jude’s law professor Harold Stein, with whom Jude develops an extremely close relationship, and who, eventually, with his wife Julia, adopts Jude at the age of 30.Another significant character is the young doctor Andy Contractor, who is the first to realize the extent of the physical and psychological damage that has been done to Jude, and even he does not know the full story of Jude’s past.Although the four principal characters – JB, Malcolm, Willem and Jude— provide the continuity for the book, it is, finally, Jude’s truly disturbing and almost incomprehensible life to which the author pays the most attention.Indeed, the last half or so of the book delves in great depth into the scarring, both physical and emotional, that has left Jude as guarded and impenetrable as he is.The passages in which we discover the characters and events to which Yanagihara has been alluding since the start are so harrowing, and so disturbing, that I think many (including myself) would rather skim through them than endure reading about Jude’s pain. These sections occur sporadically throughout the novel, and are recounted in more or less chronological order, beginning with Jude’s stay as an abused child in a western monastery, continuing into his years spent on the run with lapsed monk and pedophile Brother Luke, followed by his time at an orphanage which was no better, and likely worse, than his monastery sojourn. In his final trial by fire, at age 15 he spends 12 weeks with the cruel and sadistic Dr.Traylor, culminating in the car “accident” which eventually leads to his salvation and new life at the college, thanks to the intervention of kindly social worker, Ana.If the book can be said to have a theme beyond the obvious- that of the transcendent power of friendship- it is the indomitable nature of the human spirit, and the incredible lengths to which a sufferer, in this case Jude, will go to survive and keep his secrets from emerging.Another theme, one which only takes centre stage in the second half of the novel, is the redemptive power of love to alleviate even the most profound suffering.I picked up— and put down —this book several times before my sister and daughter-in-law both said that, although it was hard to get into, it was definitely worth a read.My sister found it very reminiscent of Mary McCarthy’s 1991 bestselling novel about eight Vassar College grads, The Group.Of course, I did finally persevere and made my way through this marathon read, pausing only occasionally to rest and hydrate.Yanagihara’s skills in limning the inner life of the unfortunate Jude and the emotional impact of his past are impressive.Did this require 814 pages? No.Especially toward the end, I was beginning to tire of her repetitiveness, in particular regarding Jude and Willem’s unending apologies to each other.I also found it both surprising and unfortunate that two of the four major characters, Malcolm and JB, are left in the dust and become mere supporting actors, as the novel concentrates almost exclusively on the later lives and relationship of Jude and Willem.Another annoying feature of the book was the almost complete disregard for the few female characters who are sparsely included in the narrative. They struck me as little more than extras in this male-centred cast of thousands. While reading, I kept remembering previous “epic” i.e.epically long, novels I’d read in the past, such as Gone with the Wind and anything by James Mich- ener, in which the time investment paid off with heightened perspectives and general knowledge gained.I also wondered why Yanagihara’s editor had not curbed her tendency toward lengthiness: a mere 500 pages would likely have been sufficient to tell this story.PS, I am donating this book to the Lennoxville Library for any hardy souls who love a lengthy, but generally well-written tome, with the caveat: this is NOT a beach read! the association shared the data to help other local organizations who might not have the resources on hand to comb through census data themselves. The report, entitled “Socio-Demographic Profile of the English-Speaking Community of the Historical Eastern Townships,” looks at the CLSC territories within the boundaries of the region that the Town- shippers work within, including the whole of the Es- trie and parts of the Centre-du-Québec, Chaudière-Appalaches, and Montérégie administrative regions, in order to try to identify key statistics about the local English speaking populations.According to the data, there are 1,097,925 individuals living in Québec whose first official language is English. This represents 13.9 per cent of the overall population of the province and is up slightly from the 2011 numbers, when the English speaking population was recorded as 1,058,248.In the Historical Eastern Townships, the 2016 census recorded 39,670 English speakers, or 5.8 per cent of the overall population, the majority of whom reside in the Cowansville-Farnham-Bedford, Sherbrooke and Memphrémagog territories.According to the report, English-speaking populations have a slightly lower proportion of youth 0-14 years of age than their French-speaking counterparts, although the gap is wider in some regions than in others. In the Acton Regional County Municipality (MRC), for example, French speaking youth make up 17.4 per cent of their language group whereas the area registers no English speaking children at all.On the other hand, the proportion of children in the English populations of the Les Appalaches and Coaticook MRCs is actually higher than that of the French language group.By contrast to those youth figures, the proportion of people 65 years of age and older in the local English speaking populations is higher than the French in 11 out of 14 regions, and 52.6 per cent of English speakers in the Townships are 45 or older.Provincially seniors make up 14.5 per cent of the English-speaking population, but in the Townships that figure sits at 22.5 per cent with only the Les Appalaches region not surpassing the provincial norm.On the education front, 53.2% of English- speakers residing in the Historical Eastern Townships had a high school diploma or less in 2016 compared to 45.2% of the French-speaking population in the region. That figure rises to 62.4 per cent in youth 15-29 years of age.Regionally, despite showing higher levels of higher education, only 18.9% of the English- speaking population earned an annual salary of $50,000 or more in 2016 compared to 23.5% of their French-speaking counterparts A second report focusing specifically on youth aged 15 to 29 in the Province reveals that this demographic actually represents a higher proportion of the English population(20.5 per cent) than French youth of the same age do to theirs (17.5 per cent).English-speaking youth are more likely to be members of a visible minority community, and are significantly more likely to be low-income earners (defined as $20,000 or less per year) or unemployed. The full text of the reports is available on the Town- shippers’ website at English?speaking community, from Ayer's Cliff to the border, to help me understand the unique situation of the members of this community, young and old, and to let me see the successful integration of the two linguistic communities of Eastern Townships. That's how I spent many hours with him and with another community leader to meet a lot of people who could play a role in everyday life and in the future of Ayer's Cliff, Stanstead and all nearby towns. It was during this campaign of 2003 that I developed a special affection for our English?speaking community in the Eastern Townships, with its centuries?old traditions, its values that are still alive and its desire to participate fully in the Quebec of tomorrow. It was also on this occasion that I began to realize the importance of volunteering in the Anglophone and bilingual communities of our region.Volunteering that continues very often from father to son, from mother to daughter, for generations. To help me understand the importance of volunteering, I had a good example in Stanley.Over the last 15 years, I have seen him take care of schools, churches, seniors' homes, youth groups, Pat Burns Arena, and many other things, but most importantly of hockey. He has been a coach all his life and has even trained many good athletes in his own family. In the past year, although he has done a lot for his community, he has been lobbying his MNA for an important school project for the youth of his community, with a happy ending in June. For all these reasons, and to honor with him his family and loved ones, it is a great privilege for me to present a National Assembly medal to Stanley Holmes, exemplary citizen by his exceptional involvement in the regional community and privileged witness of the resilience of the English?speaking population of the Eastern Townships.Submitted by Pierre Reid, MNA for Orford By Ocean Francoeur Special to The Record So, today marks the end of my second summer working at The Sherbrooke Record. It all goes by so fast! I am so lucky to have had a job that pays me to write and learn and meet tons of interesting people. But all good things come to an end, and I’d be lying if I did- n’t say I was looking forward to having a few weeks off before starting my second year at Bishop’s.When I first started at The Record, I was kind of a mess.I was so nervous! I remember Sharon McCully, my boss, coming up to me at 10 a.m.on my first day and saying: “call these people, I want the article done by three”.Immediate panic.Keeping up to date on everything that goes on, calling people, interviewing them, taking notes, asking for photos, taking photos, going to events, writing stories, accurately representing people within those stories… It’s a lot. It’s exciting, it’s interesting and now, I find it fun-but it’s stressful. But I think some stress can be beneficial. One professor at Bishop’s, Dr.Rid- dell, (who is spectacular, by the way) once told my class that being uncomfortable is good.Being stressed out is good.It means you’re growing, progressing. Not too much stress, but just enough to make you adapt. That’s what The Record did for me.It challenged me, took me out of my comfort zone.I’m one of those people, like probably a lot of others, who kind of live in a bubble, without realizing it.Especially us students, I think. We come in for the school year and we stick to campus. You party, sure; you go out sometimes, but that doesn’t mean you get to know Lennoxville. That doesn’t mean you get to know how freaking awesome the Townships really are.The Record got me to find that out.I didn’t get to physically experience reporting like some people do.I don’t have a car, so that meant I got my daily dose of exercise (not to mention a farmer’s tan) walking to and from work every day, and it meant that I did a lot of my work via telephone.By working from my desk, I perhaps didn’t visit a lot of country, but I did get to hear people’s stories, and that’s what I loved.Listening to the people that make the Townships what they are.The beauty, innovation and sense of community found here is pretty special. We’ve got an Olympic competitor, we’ve got two brothers kayaking down the Mississippi to raise environmental awareness, we’ve got new zero-waste initiatives, we’ve got local professors discovering new systems in our galaxy, we’ve got spectacular theatrical productions and artists and musicians and so many social programs I can’t list them all.Would I have ever known this without calling them, meeting them, getting their stories out there?Probably not.I’ve got to say, I have had some favorite stories over my two summers. Some were happy, some sad. Some of them were hard to write.I remember my Scotstown article, from my first year at The Record, fondly. It was probably the first story I felt comfortable writing, I really got into ‘the zone’ with that one for the first time.I think that’s when I realized I preferred sharing people’s stories rather than sinking my teeth into some hard-hitting news. That year I also loved spending time with the O.W.L.S.at the community center, and I adored interviewing Lynne Ann and Violet, two wonderful ladies living with Scleroderma. If they are reading this, I hope they are well.My story ‘The Brave Ones’ is extremely close to my heart as well.I think of Serena every day. This year I’ve had more memorable talks with our lovely community members.I’m thinking of Jan Draper, for her writing workshop, or Mead Baldwin, for his drama camp. But my favorite story this year must have been the Lion’s 45th Anniversary article.Stan and Kevin and Glenys are all joys to talk to, and hearing about all the crazy stories that have taken place in the big yellow pub just made the ol’ watering hole sound all the more integral to Lennoxville. If ever that place closes it’ll be a big loss.Really though, what makes The Record awesome is how sweet the entire crew is.Just ask Steve; he left a few months ago, but can’t seem to stay away.I’ll miss his little drop-in visits.Matthew and Gordon are so helpful and understanding. They’re both fantastic reporters, and I’m glad I got to work alongside them. And of course, there’s Anne, Janet, Laurie, Sam and Caroline, who make coming into work not a chore, but fun.The Record helped me not only grow as a writer (when I first showed up I could not, for the life of me, use the right form of ‘its’) and as a person, but it gave me the opportunity to get to know the community I’m now a part of.I’ll forever be grateful to Sharon for giving me this opportunity. If you’re an aspiring journalist, The Record, with its 100-plus- years of existence, is the place you want to start, take it from me.So, with that, thank you, and farewell! Maybe one day you’ll read me again, but until then, take care.Page 4 Friday , August 17, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Special to The Record, one last time Amateur tattoo artists face $100 ?nes Record Staff Two young men who solicited minors to sign contracts for tattooing services in a park in Sherbrooke face fines of $100 each for contravening a municipal regulation.According to the by-law in question, it is forbidden to solicit or sell services in a public place without having received authorization to do so.Anyone who contravenes this regulation is liable to a fine of $100.The two men, aged 19 and 21, were arrested last Friday after being reported for offering their services at Sherbrooke's Ma-Villa Park.On Tuesday, the Estrie public health department held a review of the health risks of these amateur tattoos. The two young men practice ‘stick n poke’ tattooing, a traditional method where a needle and ink are used to make point to point marks on the skin to reproduce a tattoo. CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 significance of the mural.“It’s just three of us now,” Malenfant said, explaining that the rest of the MURIRS crew is either back to school, or busy with other contracts. This was a particularly difficult summer for mural making, Malenfant said. One day during the heat wave, the temperature of the wall was 37 degrees, which made it impossible to paint. There were other days when the humidity level was too high for paint to properly adhere to the surface, again delaying progress.Even many nice days were interrupted briefly with rain, slowing down work while the artists waited for the surface to dry.Now that the scaffolding is down, the three remaining MURIRS artists can finish the work and fine tune the details.Malenfant said that when the scaffolding is up, it is challenging to paint between the planks, and touch ups are often required once it is removed. While there are some obvious references in the mural; Marché Central Lansdowne, Hôtel Central, and a city bus prominently featured in the scene, Malenfant said patrons will have to wait until the inauguration to learn the significance of the different elements featured in the new mural. The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday , August 17, 2018 Page 5 Canadian Heritage Minister meets Young Leaders and Actions Inteculturelles Team Record Staff While Canadian Heritage and Godbout and David Morin, presented the objectives of the project and the actions they put in place to promote inclusion and prevent radicalization. The committee was represented by Camille Leblanc, Jovana Mojovic, Isaïa Neeson, and Fatéma-Zahrae Lekhel, who explained how young people get involved on a daily basis in order to highlight similarities and the things that unite people, regardless of the community of origin.During the discussions, the Co-Chairs noted that it is important to continue to foster opportunities for dialogue in order to create win-win conditions for harmonious living together and break down barriers and encourage the welcoming and integration of young people in their community. The "Dialogue Plus" project proposes a series of public actions to stimulate good ethno-cultural relations and encourage greater mobilization of young people, whether they are Canadians of origin or from different ethno-cultural communities. The activities are supported by a multi-purpose advisory committee that brings together young people, stakeholders from various backgrounds, and experts, as well as the Dialogue Plus project team.Their mission is made up of three main components: the conduct of a pan- Canadian survey to assess Canadians' perceptions of discrimination and radicalization, the creation of a Youth in Action Committee, and the holding of public forums Associate Instructor, University of Alberta The sudden and unexpected diplomatic crisis between Canada and Saudi Arabia has raised questions about their levels of bilateral economic relations, the $12 billion arms sale signed by the two countries in 2014 and the fate of thousands of Saudi students pursuing higher education at Canadian universities. This spat was ignited when the Saudi government ordered the expulsion of Canada’s ambassador to the kingdom and announced a halt to “all new business and investment transactions with Canada”.This was in response to tweets from Canada’s foreign affairs minister, Chrystia Freeland, and her ministry’s Twitter account criticizing the arrest of human rights activist Samar Badawi. But before delving into the repercussions of this crisis, an overall assessment of Canadian-Saudi relations is needed.Substantial trade According to a fact sheet published on the Canadian government’s website, Saudi Arabia is Canada’s largest trade partner in the Middle East and North Africa. The overall trade value between the two nations fluctuated between C$3-4 billion between 2011 and 2017, with Canadian exports of about $1 billion and imports of $2-3 billion. While not negligible, these numbers don’t compare to Canada’s two-way trade with the United States, which amounted to US$673.9 billion in 2017.Nonetheless, Riyadh’s move to freeze all business with Ottawa could deprive Canada of tremendous opportunities for collaboration and investment in Saudi Arabia. With the new Vision 2030 launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom is becoming increasingly open to foreign direct investment. It’s diversifying its infrastructure projects and planning a shift to a green economy that is less dependent on fossil fuels. All of these sectors present commercial opportunities for Canadian industries, but Ottawa seems on its way to missing out on them. There is also a $15 billion deal to sell light armoured vehicles (LAVs) to Saudi Arabia that is now in jeopardy. The deal, if scrapped, could be a blow to Canada’s defence industry, which employs 65,000 people and contributes $6 billion annually to Canada’s GDP.David Perry, a senior analyst and fellow with the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, argues that foreign arms’ sales … “ … allow Canadian firms to keep plants operating, workforces employed, supply chains intact and engineers busy researching and developing new technology. The Saudi deal will keep the thousands of unionized shop-floor workers and engineers at the GDLS-C plant in London, Ont., employed for years.” Another area of co-operation that cannot be overlooked is educational exchange and its remarkable contribution to the Canadian economy. There are approximately 7,000 Saudi students on government scholarships studying in Canada.Statistics from the Canadian Bureau for International Education reveal that students from Saudi Arabia made up two per cent of Canada’s 494,525 international students in 2017.Unfortunately, the fate of these thousands of students remains undetermined as the kingdom decided to withdraw them and relocate them to other countries in retaliation of Canada’s criticism of its human rights record. This will have a negative impact on their academic standings and studies. Why the spat?Canada has made the promotion of human rights, including women’s rights and the rights of religious minorities, a top priority of its foreign policy and diplomatic initiatives. It’s therefore appropriate to demand Saudi Arabia release political prisoners and abide by human rights standards. As has been widely documented, the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia is abysmal, and the kingdom has been accused of committing war crimes in Yemen. But Ottawa has fallen into the trap of “double standards” when dealing with the issue of human rights. When human rights violations are linked to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, Canada turns a blind eye and refrains from condemning the killings and imprisonments of Palestinian children and young people, the confiscation of Palestinian lands and the establishment of illegal settlements.A consistent and fair approach would see Ottawa either condemning both Israel and Saudi Arabia, or turning a blind eye to both of them. The Saudi reaction The Saudi reaction to Canada’s criticism has been portrayed as “reckless, impulsive, and aggressive” by Sultan Barakat, director of the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies at the Doha Institute.Similarly, Lloyd Axwor- thy, a former Canadian foreign affairs minister, likens it to a Donald Trump- esque fit of pique marked by intimidation and saber-rattling.Despite unanimous agreement among political commentators and analysts that the Saudi reaction is exaggerated, Saudi leadership could exploit this crisis to garner domestic support and to thwart all attempts to criticize the kingdom’s draconian crackdown on political dissidents.Foreign relations and foreign policy are often meant to advance national interests. So what did Canadian foreign policy makers want to achieve by going after Saudi Arabia publicly? If the aim was to alleviate the circumstances of Samar Badawi and her imprisoned brother, Raif, to influence the broader direction of the Saudi leadership or to rally other like-minded countries to speak up against the human rights violations in the kingdom, then the results were disastrous.Canadian foreign policy makers could have adopted a more professional approach to address the issues of human rights in the kingdom while maintaining strong strategic and economic ties.In other words, it’s about finding a way to calibrate what Thomas Juneau, professor at the University of Ottawa, calls the costs of tactical disagreements and the benefits of strategic alignment.Canada’s relationship with Saudi Arabia is actually advantageous on several fronts. There’s no doubt navigating the relationship was tricky at times, but the alternative will be seriously detrimental to Canada if Saudi Arabia intensifies its aggressive measures against us.EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , August 17, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Unfortunately, the fate of these thousands of students remains undetermined as the kingdom decided to withdraw them and relocate them to other countries in retaliation of Canada’s criticism of its human rights it.Global trade tensions and Justin Trudeau's diplomatic failures are putting pressure on Canadian producers of barley, corn, oats, legumes, soybeans, wheat and other products. This is one of the reasons the Conservatives have called for an emergency parliamentary session to ratify Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP).Our economy needs the TPP.The Trudeau Liberals have let this important trade deal sit idle in the House of Commons. They are delaying its introduction and are not taking steps to move it forward to ensure that Canada has the benefits of the first participants. The United States is allocating $12 billion to help US farmers meet tariffs.Liberals must ensure that this does not worsen market conditions for Canadian producers and take steps to diversify Canada's export markets.Justin Trudeau's Liberals fail to address Canada's declining position in the global economy. They must address market access for our natural resources, fiscal and regulatory competitiveness, and the diversification of international trade as a priority. The Prime Minister is failing to maintain access to key export markets for our agricultural products, and is contributing to its decline.Pulse growers who export their products to India now face higher duties and severe restrictions on imports. The government still has not reached a long-term agreement on fumigation.Italy is closing down on Canadian durum and Saudi Arabia is no longer buying wheat and barley.Canada has an opportunity to show leadership on the world stage. We should act, ratify this agreement, and put pressure on the other signatory countries to do the same. The Liberals must act immediately to ratify the TPP and diversify the export markets of Canadian producers without harming any other existing access. The TPP plays an important role in our economy and creates good, well-pay- ing jobs. The Conservatives of Canada will continue to support this critical trade deal.Under the leadership of Andrew Scheer, the Conservatives of Canada are defending our vital agricultural industry and holding Justin Trudeau and the Liberals to account. We are working with our producers to help them survive Liberal failures. Please accept, ladies and gentlemen, our best regards.LUC BERTHOLD AND JOHN BARLOW CONSERVATIVE AGRICULTURE CRITICS Letters The Saudi-Canada spat: Both countries are wrong 6 Mallory, for cheese? That’s just a glimpse of what is being offered at Sherbrooke’s Marché de la Gare this weekend as The Sherbrooke Historical Society turns back the clock and recreates the a public market from the turn of the twentieth century for the sixth year in a row.“The Historical Society is shining a spotlight on the public market by recreating the ambiance of a market from the year 1900, prices and all,” said Marie-Eve Gingras, coordinator at the Sherbrooke Historical Society, adding that the 1900 prices will only be available from certain merchants and only in limited supply.According to the coordinator, “L’Histoire fait son marché,” as the annual event is called, represents one of the Marché de la Gare’s biggest weekends of the year.“It’s bigger than Christmas,” she said, estimating that as many as 3,000 people have come in a single weekend in the past to sample the wares.Although the event is still fundamentally an outdoor market selling primarily fresh produce, the special deals and additional programming result in an added charm that people seem to find very attractive.Three historical re-enactors will be present in costume for the two days, offering visitors the opportunity to interact with a local farmer who has brought her produce to market, an English businessman, and the local stationmaster. These characters, Gingras said, will be aware of their historical surroundings, but also of the anachronisms of their surroundings, allowing room for a little bit of fun in the way the three interact with their 21st century visitors.“The public market was not in the same place in 1900, and neither was the train station,” the coordinator noted. There will also be live music on Saturday and Sunday mornings L’Histoire fait son marché programming will run from 9 a.m.to 2p.m.this coming Saturday and Sunday, August 18 and 19.City removes controversial union posters Record Staff SHERBROOKE The City of Sherbrooke has taken it upon itself to remove the 200 anti- CAQ and anti-PLQ pre-election posters within its territory after the union coalition that posted them failed to remove the signs as ordered. Each member union has been issued a fine of $ 2,000 for violating municipal bylaws relating to signs. The City began removing the signs Tuesday, explaining that the signage contravened By-law 13.1.4 on banned signs. The coalition of unions was ordered to remove the signs on August 7 after receiving the legal advisory from the City. The unions were given 72 hours to take the signs down, but they refused to do so.Meanwhile, the Quebec Superior Court dismissed a request by the coalition for an interlocutory injunction in Quebec City that would have allowed the coalition behind the campaign to post new signs by the time of the official start of the election campaign on August 23.Quebec City removed 200 signs on July 23.In Sherbrooke, the coalition has still to respond to the removal of the signs and the $2,000 fines.Last week Marc Ranger, the spokesman for the coalition and director of CUPE Quebec, told Sherbrooke’s LA Tribune that the group would not pay any fines. He stated that he believes that the bylaws in question were invalid and in violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.Montreal has never removed similar posters and Laval has adapted its by-laws to allow such electoral displays. The coalition includes the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the Steelworkers Union, the Canadian Union of Professional and Clerical Employees (COPE), the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), and the Quebec Union of Service Employees (SQEES).Record Staff SHERBROOKE Anew report from the Canadian Center on Addictions and Substance Use (CCDUS) cites fun, peer pressure, and university culture as the main reasons behind an upsurge in binge drinking among post-sec- ondary students Binge drinking, or "episodic heavy drinking," is associated with serious health and safety risks, and young adults, especially post-secondary students, are particularly vulnerable to these risks. It should be noted, however, that, as a general rule, the focus group participants who participated in the report did not see their consumption patterns as harmful. The study demonstrates the seriousness of alcohol seizure and its risks for students, as well as examining the consequences associated with risky drinking, such as memory loss and non-consensual sex, and looked at drinking as a means of dealing with problems like stress and anxiety.Students also talked about how their drinking experience evolves over time as they learn to know and manage their limits. Some reasons often used by students to explain why they binge include Boredom and having nothing else to do as well as a university culture of consumption focused on socialization.Pleasure and time spent with friends; the pressure to drink as much as others, whether by participating in activities such as drinking games or paying rounds plays a significant role. The students also offered possible solutions that could discourage binging including, informing students about alcohol early and often; making moderate consumption an integral part of everyday life, rather than condemning it; offering students interesting activities to do in the evening, other than attending bars and clubs, and preventing certain risky behaviors through sound strategies, such as: bringing a fixed amount of money to the bar or club or setting a maximum amount of alcohol to drink before going out, asking a friend to watch how much they drink or to tell them to stop after a certain amount, or drinking non-alcoholic drinks during drinking occasions. stints with Columbia and Arista were sandwiched around her prime years with Atlantic Records. But it was at Detroit's New Bethel Baptist Church, where her father was pastor, that Franklin learned the gospel fundamentals that would make her a soul institution.Aretha Louise Franklin was born March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee. The Rev.C.L.Franklin soon moved his family to Buffalo, New York, then to Detroit, where the Franklins settled after the marriage of Aretha's parents collapsed and her mother (and reputed sound-alike) Barbara returned to Buffalo.“A wonder child,'' was how Robinson described her to Franklin biographer David Ritz.Franklin was in her early teens when she began touring with her father, and in 1956 she released a gospel album through J-V-B Records.Four years later, she signed with Columbia Records producer John Hammond, who called Franklin the most exciting singer he had heard since a vocalist he promoted decades earlier, Billie Holiday.Franklin knew Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr.and considered joining his label, but decided it was just a local company at the time.“But the years at Columbia also taught her several important things,'' critic Russell Gersten later wrote.“She worked hard at controlling and modulating her phrasing, giving her a discipline that most other soul singers lacked. She also developed a versatility with mainstream music that gave her later albums a breadth that was lacking on Motown LPs from the same period.“Most important, she learned what she didn't like: to do what she was told to do.'' In 1966, her contract ran out and she jumped to Atlantic, home to such rhythm and blues giants as Ray Charles.Wexler highlighted her piano playing and teamed her with veteran R&B musicians from FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The result rocked as hard as the Rolling Stones while returning her to her gospel roots. Her breakthrough was so profound that Ebony Magazine called 1967 the year of “'Retha, Rap and Revolt.'' At a time of protest and division, Franklin's records were signposts to a distant American dream _ a musical union of the church and the secular, man and woman, black and white, North and South, East and West. They were produced and engineered by New Yorkers Wexler and Tom Dowd, arranged by Turkish-born Arif Mardin and backed by an interracial gathering of top session musicians.“In black neighbourhoods and white universities, in the clubs and on the charts, her hits came like cannonballs, blowing holes in the stylized bouffant and chiffon Motown sound,'' Gerri Hir- shey wrote in “Nowhere to Run,'' a history of soul music that was published in 1984.The difference between Franklin at Columbia and Franklin at Atlantic shows in a pair of songs first performed by Dionne Warwick: “Walk On By'' and “I Say a Little Prayer.'' On “Walk On By,'' recorded at Columbia, the arrangement stays close to the cool pop and girl group chorus of the original.“I Say a Little Prayer,'' an Atlantic release, was a gospel workout, from Franklin's church-influ- enced piano to the call-and-response vocals. From her years at Atlantic and through the rest of her life, she would rarely stick to anyone else's blueprint for a song, often revising her own hits when she performed them on stage. One of her boldest transformation came on her signature record and first No.1 hit, “Respect,'' a horn-led march with a chanting “sock-it-to-me'' chorus and the spelled out demand for “R-E-S-P- E-C-T.'' Franklin had decided she wanted to “embellish'' the R&B song written by Otis Redding, whose version had been a modest hit in 1965.“When she walked into the studio, it was already worked out in her head,'' Wexler wrote in Rolling Stone magazine in 2004.“Otis came up to my office right before 'Respect' was released, and I played him the tape.He said, 'She done took my song.' He said it benignly and ruefully. He knew the identity of the song was slipping away from him to her.'' In a 2004 interview with the St.Pe- tersburg (Florida) Times, Franklin was asked whether she sensed in the '60s that she was helping change popular music.“Somewhat, certainly with 'Respect,' that was a battle cry for freedom and many people of many ethnicities took CONT’D ON PAGE 20 August 17 - empowering the listener and at times giving an unapologetic nudge to get on your feet and dance. This musical offering clears up all doubt; Barber intends to leave her mark and state her claim as a contender in the ring of artist recognition.Partnered with lyricist Ryan Gulde- mond who co-wrote four of the nine songs on Metaphora, Barber feels that he helped her to push her creative boundaries.Renowned for writing songs with a message, in this album Barber digs deep.“I had more that I needed to say,” explained Barber and Guldemond helped her to do just that with each song boldly driving home the words and leaving a resonating beat in ones memory.Metaphora is a continuation of her journey from folk to jazz, R & B to pop… The show will attest to Barber’s versatility and her bold approach to her music and her transformation within the realms of her artistry. The talented songstress will not disappoint and you will likely find yourself a fan shortly after her performance begins. With the luxury of the internet, it is easy to type her name into your search engine and there you will find a sampling of her music. Her striking appearance, her versatile style and her immense talent combine and this is nothing short of a gift to all.Jill Barber will appear in Knowlton at Theatre Lac Brome and the Metaphora tour is the perfect introduction to what is sure to become a longstanding artist to follow as the evolution and growth continues. For more information, contact: 450-242- 2270.The theatre is located at 9 Mont Echo and the show runs from 8-10pm.Mable Hastings The Scoop COURTESY August 17 - August 23, 2018 Page 15 TALK The ONLY Jayco dealer in the Eastern Townships T 819.847.3444 9343 Boul.Bourque Sherbrooke COME AND VISIT OUR FAMILY AND YOU'LL SEE THAT OUR SALES STAFF IS BILINGUAL AND PLEASED TO SERVE YOU IN ENGLISH! * SOME CONDITIONS MAY APPLY Camping Trailers Park Models Toy Haulers Monday to Thursday 9 a.m.to 7 p.m.• Fridays 9 a.m.to 8 p.m.Saturdays 9 a.m.to 4 p.m.• Sundays 11a.m.to 3 p.m.Fifth Wheels Page 16 August 17 - August 23, 2018 TV Listings TALK Your week on TV SATURDAY DAYTIME AUGUST 18, 2018 Bell Star 8 AM 8:30 9 AM 9:30 10 AM 10:30 11 AM 11:30 12 PM 12:30 1 PM 1:30 2 PM 2:30 3 PM 3:30 WCAX # - - CBS This Morning: Saturday (N) ’ Å Lucky Dog ’ (EI) Dr.Chris: Pet Vet Innovation Nation The Inspectors AAA Ben- e?ts Larry King Sp.Paci?c Blues Paci?c Blues Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (N) PGA Golf WPTZ % - - (7:00) Today (N) ’ Teen Kids News (N) Hanna Into the Wild Champ Within The Voyager Wilderness Vet Journey- Dreyer Naturally, Danny Seo Health & Happiness Premier League Soccer Chelsea FC vs Arsenal FC.(N) ’ (Live) Prem Goal Zone Track & Field CBMT & 206 301 The Furches- ter Hotel Beat Bugs “Help” ’ Addison ’ Å What He Ate True Rainbow (:40) Beat Bugs ’ The Mo- blees ’ (:28) Stella & Sam ’ Our Montreal Å Studios, Lofts & Jam Spaces ’ Å Swimming Pan Paci?c Championships. From Tokyo.(Taped) ’ Å CHLT _ 107 718 (6:00) Salut bonjour week-end (N) (SC) Québec Les rénos d’Hugo Du coeur et Bien (SC) TVA nouvelles (N) Chacun sa route (N) Infopub- licité (SC) Les looney tunes ’ (:15) ›› “Flicka” (2006, Enfants) Alison Lohman, Tim McGraw, Maria Bello.(DVS) (SC) WMTW ( - - Good Morning America (N) ’ Å Jack Hanna Ocean Treks Sea Rescue ’ (EI) The Wildlife Docs Rock the Park Vacation Creation Paid Program Paid Program AAA Ben- e?ts Paid Program Entertainers: With Byron Allen ’ Å 2018 Little League World Series CKSH ) 108 - Sous les mers aven Blinky Bill MBC - Chasseurs Arthur (:07) Vite pas vite (:41) Erky Perky Estrie L’épicerie (SC) Téléjournal Monde- parlait 1001 vies (N) (SC) Viens-tu faire un tour?(DVS) (SC) Miss Marple (DVS) (SC) CKMI + - - Fish’n Canada Real Fishing Adv’ture North Fishful Thinking For Rent “Stacey” Paid Program Powerboat Television Driving Television Leave It to Bryan Leave It to Bryan Taken A government of- ?cial’s child is taken.Superior Donuts ’ Superior Donuts ’ PGA Golf CFCF , 205 312 Your Morning Weekend (N) ’ Å It Is Written Å Celebrity Style Story Operation Smile ’ Å It Is Written Å Cash Cab ’ SportsCentre (N) ’ Å Sidelines ’ Å Moneytalk (N) Å ›› “You Again” (2010) Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis.Premiere.’ Å WVNY 6 - - Good Morning America (N) ’ Å Jack Hanna Ocean Treks Sea Rescue ’ (EI) The Wildlife Docs Rock the Park Vacation Creation Tummy Tuck Paid Program Paid Program Paid Program Try Yoga Paid Program 2018 Little League World Series WUTV > - - Airfryer Oven Try Yoga PiYo Workout! She was rarely off the charts in 1967 and 1968 and continued to click in the early 1970s with the funky “Rock Steady'' and other singles and such acclaimed albums as the intimate “Spirit in the Dark.'' Her popularity faded during the decade, but revived in 1980 with a cameo appearance in the smash movie “The Blues Brothers'' and her switch to Arista Records, run by her close friend Clive Davis.Franklin collaborated with such pop and soul artists as Luther Van- dross, Elton John, Whitney Houston and George Michael, with whom she recorded a No.1 single, “I Knew You Were Waiting (for Me).'' Her 1985 album “Who's Zoomin' Who'' received some of her best reviews and included such hits as the title track, a phrase she came up with herself, and “Freeway of Love.'' If she never quite recaptured the urgency and commercial success of the late '60s, she never relinquished her status as the singer among singers or lost her willingness to test herself, whether interpreting songs by Lauryn Hill and Sean “Diddy'' Combs on her acclaimed “A Rose Is Still a Rose'' album or filling in at the 1998 Grammy ceremony for an ailing Luciano Pavarotti. She covered songs by Ray Charles, the Rolling Stones and Sam Cooke, but also music by Stephen Sondheim, Bread and the Doobie Brothers. At an early recording session at Columbia, she was asked to sing “Over the Rainbow.'' “If a song's about something I've experienced or that could've happened to me, it's good,'' she told Time magazine in 1968.“But if it's alien to me, I couldn't lend anything to it.Because that's what soul is about _ just living and having to get along.'' Being “Aretha'' didn't keep her from checking out the competition.Billing herself on social media as “The Undisputed Queen of Soul,'' she lashed out at Beyonce for even suggesting that Tina Turner deserved the title and had sharp words for Mavis Staples and Gladys Knight, among others. She even threatened to sue Warwick in 2017.Her albums over the past two decades included “So Damn Happy,'' for which Franklin wrote the gratified title ballad, and “Aretha Sings the Great Diva Classics,'' featuring covers of hits by Adele and Alicia Keys among others.Franklin's autobiography, “Aretha: From These Roots,'' came out in 1999.But she always made it clear that her story would continue, and that she would sing it.“Music is my thing, it's who I am.I'm in it for the long run,'' she told The Associated Press in 2008.“I'll be around, singing, 'What you want, baby I got it,' having fun all the way.Aretha By Ocean Francoeur Special to The Record Well-known local figure skater Sarah-Maude Blanchard did not only win first place at the Quebec Summer Championships, she also beat her personal best for her long program, bringing her one step closer to her ultimate goal: the Olympics.Last weekend Blanchard skated against some of the country’s best figure skaters. With two junior teams, each composed of over 30 opponents, she still managed to maintain her winning streak in the singles Junior competition and make her town proud.“The biggest stress was getting past the short program.Once I did well there, I knew I was good for the long program,” said 17-year-old athlete.“And I was, because I beat personal best.I earned 97 points.” Blanchard competed in the short program last Friday.Like the name suggests, it is a shorter routine that must include 3 jumps. The very next day she did the long program, which entails a completely different routine with seven jumps.Luckily, air time is her specialty.“Ever since I was little my best and favorite part of figure skating has been the jumps. It gives me an advantage, because typically that’s what people struggle the most with. It’s hard. Some people can’t even make it off the ice,” said Blanchard, who’s been on ice since she was four.“For me, the toughest part is what we call skating skills. It’s the part everyone has to constantly work on, just brushing up on the basics. It’s the worst because it’s a long process and you never really feel like you’re improving, but you know you have to keep going.” And keep going she does.Blanchard shared that she skates at least three hours every day, and that on top of that she does weight training, dance and ballet to stay in top form. Now that she’s graduated high school, Blanchard wonders how her new start at the CEGEP de Sherbrooke in pure and applied sciences will affect her training.“I guess it’s going to be different.I used to wake up early to get my skating in before class, and then work out after school. If I’m honest, last year was hard.I missed a lot of school for competitions,” she said.“But I manage, and my friends are super understanding about how busy I am.Now that I’m heading to CEGEP, I’m only going part time, so organizing my time should be easier.” “My priority is always skating, I’ve always been passionate about it, and that’s still true today.I might have days where I’m tired and not as motivated, but then I’m on the ice and I know it’s my happy place.” Her happy place sometimes comes with some inconvenience though.Blanchard bought new skates two years ago, and they caused her to develop painful cysts on both her feet. She postponed the surgery in February, so she could attend a competition in Italy, and isn’t planning on rescheduling any time soon.“It’s really super painful, but it’s recently stopped hurting. It might come back, it has before, but I can’t afford to lose any training time.I’d have to stop skating for two months because of the surgery.” Since she is turning 18 soon, Blanchard only has one last junior competition left before she becomes part of the senior division.“My last one is the Vancouver Grand Prix. This one is international.I’m really excited because it’s my first one of this kind.People will be coming in from all over the world.Girls from Japan, Russia, they’re supposed to be fierce,” she said, adding that even so, she’s not nervous.“The hard part was getting to this point. There’s not as much pressure.I think it’s going to be fun. There’s the show-off aspect, you represent your country at these competitions.” Once Blanchard becomes a Senior, she will officially be eligible for the Olympics.“I’m aiming for the one in four years, and if not, the one in eight. To be selected for the Olympics I’m going to have to be in the top three at Nationals, so that’s my next step.” Blanchard will be flying off to Vancouver to compete September 2 and will only return September 16.Hopefully, she’ll come back with yet another gold medal between her teeth.Local Sports Constantly pounding on the pavement can cause shin splints.Treadmill running is another good option as it is low impact.Friday , August 17, 2018 Page 21 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Specialist of Chrysler and Dodge trucks for over 40 years.Michel Comeau thanks you for the support South, of course, jumped to four hearts.Things looked straightforward.South seemed to have five heart and five club tricks. So, he ruffed at trick two, cashed the heart ace and played a heart to dummy’s queen.East’s spade-two discard was a surprise.Could declarer still succeed?South saw that he could not afford to draw trumps, because that would have left him with none.He could have then cashed dummy’s top clubs, but the defenders would have taken the rest of the tricks for down two.Instead, declarer needed to unblock and run the clubs.Since he could pitch only one club from the board (on his fifth heart), he had to hope that West held at least two clubs.South played off the club ace and club king. Then he drew trumps, throwing the club queen from the board. Finally, he ran his clubs to take those 10 tricks.
