Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

the whole of the afternoon sitting, ‘the bill being finally passed.- In explaining the object of the Bill Hon.Sir Lomer Gouin retraced the history of the School to its institution. It had been established by the Government at the instigation of the Montreal Chambre de Commerce, which had at the time, undertaken to furnish the institution with a certain sum of money annually.Since the institution of the School, however, the only money it had received, had been voted to it by the Government. He recalled that at the time of the founding of the School it had been decided that it should be some day affiliated with one of the universities of the Province. The number of pupils at present attending the School was 65, all of whom were French-Can- adians. It was only rezsonable therefore, that the Schol become affiliated with Laval University. He explained that, as the Government had been voting an annual subsidy of $50,000 for the school, the same amount should be devoted to Protestant higher education, for otherwise, people who bad been paying taxes for the upkeep of the institution.would lose the benefit of it.He added that he wished the clause giving the School powers to affiliate itself with the University be approved by both Committees of Public Instruction, and by the Lieutenant-Cov.ernor in Council.Sir Lomer added that the approval of the two Public Instruction Committee's was important, as the question of compensation would be the affair of the Protestant Committee of the Council of Publie Instruction, Lavergne Scores Government, Mr.Lavergne who was the next speaker, rebuked the ‘Jovernment for founding the School which they claimed had been such an expense to, them. The Opposition would rather the Government had instituted a chair at one of the two Universities. The Government was only doing what the Opposition had anticipated, but they would now have to face the disapproval of the Protestant section of the population, ; who had been paying taxes for the mainteucnce of the institution.PT ; A Colossal” fiasco, As a remedy for the state of affairs into which the Government was deliberately plunging itself, he made the suggestion that a’ subsidy of shout twelve thousand dollars be voted to Laval Univertity, for the giv- ng of a course of higher commercial udies, such a» wae bein ven at the School, which he, te, had been a that occasion, there had been no dissent on the part of Mr.Maclean, Admits Liberal Corruption, Sir Wilfrid Laurier did not think that any one un the other side of the House was in a position to cast any stones at the Opposition. He was quite willing to admit that the party to which he belonged was not without stain. There had been many offences in connection with elections, and there was room for reform, The Prime Minister in his Halifax platform had made a large contract, larger perhaps than he can carry out, but that platform contains some suggestions which might well be considered.Sir Wilfrid expressed the personal view that, while the law as it stands is in some respects too severe, in other respects it is too lax.The question had slso been advocated of making election day a holiday.tion to offences against the law, Public opinion was usually at fever heat by election day and to take men away from their regular avocations was to invite to disurder. But the law should make it obligatory that an hour or two hours be given every man in which to vote.He knew cases where men had been kept from voting by impediments put in theie way.Against Compulelon, Sir Wilfrid doubted it budget is brought down, probably within the nent three weeks, Sir Wilfrid Laurier and his supporters will have summoned sufficient courage to bring the subject of free food within the range of parliamentary discussion. So far the Liberals have shunned the very name of free food and there are some who say that Sir Wilfrid Laurier had it intimated to him in a very direct way that any attempt to remove or reduce food duties would be regarded by the agriculturists in Canada as a distinctly unfriendly act.Sir Wilfrid has already antagonized the cities by his efforts to make the farmers believe that reciprocity would give them ; a larger market and better prices for Now if the farmers get better prices the cost of living to the consumers must Increase, hence the hostility of the consumers.Under the free food proposition Sir Wilfrid plans to reduce the cost of living te the consumers by placing the Canadian farmer in direct competition with the United States farmers, thus Col.Rhodes, Hon.Geo.Irvine, Hon.H.G.Joly, Rev.G.V.Housman, and many others that escape us.It was a magnificent lecture from beginning to end, and was listened to with great attention, profit and pleasure.Mr.and Mrs, Mathew Arnold in Towndigtinguished couple were the guests of Mr.Geo.Stewart, Jr, who showed them around the city, accompanied by Mayor Langelier. With the Citadel and the prospect obtained from the King’s Bastion they ex- ptessed themselves as very much de- fighted. In the afternoon Mrs, Geo.Stewart was “At Home” to afford an opportunity of our citizens to meet the distinguished party and quite a number of our leading citizens embraced the opportunity.TOWN NEARLY WIPED OUT BY A FIRE.Okotoks, Alta, Feb.18—Fire wiped out a large portion of the Lusiness section here today. The Joss in estie mated at more than $200.000.MUCH ARGENTINE BEEF REACHES NEW YORK New York, Feb.18—The steamer Highland Harris, which arrived tonight from Argentine ports, brought, 2.5% tons of éhilled Seef. This is avid' |to be’ the largest’ shipment of beef, this por me ever brought te poste | CLIMPSES OF cm) ummm | A HUNDRED YEARS AGO TODAY More Talk of Peace.Should peace actually take place, 1 shall consider Alexander, Bernadotte & Company as the efficient negocia- tors, rather than Adams, Bayard, Russell and Speaker Clay. Our government has a difficult task to play before a peace can be made.We must retrace our steps and give up every point for which the war was ostensibly made. The British government is willing to negotiate a peace on precisely the same terms which were offered by Admiral Warren and contemptuously rejected by our Cabinet io 1812.To pretend to negotiate, and yet be determined rigidly to adhere to the claims then set up is perfectly idle, and can be considered as nothing less than a gross imposition upon the people; and to recede from that ground, is to tell the nation and the world, that they are either un- sble to maintain or have voluntarily abandoned what they consider as their esential rights, And if the war is to be carried on until Great Britain gives up the right to search for her own seamen on board neutral vessels, none of the present generation will ever see the end of the war, CONTEST OVER A BARONESS’ WILL SETTLED BY REFEREE New York, Feb.18—Threatened contest over the will of the late Baroness Margaret Laurs De Steurs-Zbo- rowski, was settled today by a report of the referee who recommended that two children by her first marriage be given a share in their mother’s $4,- 000.000 estate. The referec recommended also that the words of condemnation be expunged from the Baroness’ will, which cut them off without a cent because, she said, they bad not shown her proper love and respect, he contestants were Hubert and Margaret De Stenrs.children of the Baroness by her first marriage to the Baron De Steurs whom she divorced in 1890, The reierce recommends that they be given $325,000 each. The contested will left the whole estate to Louis Zborowski, son of the Baroness, and her second husband, Count Elliott Zhoroweki. The Baroness before her marriage wo Miss.Margaret Lagra Astor, of New York, OF ABUSE ON LINER, Intensely Nervous as She Testifies in Her $150,000 Suit Against the Cunard Company.New York, Feb.18—Catherine O'Rourke, who came to America from County Roscommon, Ireland, on the steamship Campania in April, 1911, began to give testimony yesterday in the Supreme Court at Mineola, L.Iin her suit for $150000 damages against the Cunard Steamship Company. On the stand yesterday the girl was highly nervous, and her attorney, A.T.Leary, had to handle her with care to keep her from breaking down. She said that for two days aîter sailing she was seasick. On the third day she went to the deck to get fresh air.“There,” she said, “the steward and matron grabbed me and dragged me back to the dining room. They told me that a dead baby had been found and that I was its mother.“I denied that and they called Dr.Robert Bruce, the ship’s surgeon. He abused me, and said the child was mine. Then he said he was going to examine me.I pleaded with him and the matron, Selma Wilbrant, 1 told them I was not the child's mother, but they dragged me to the hospital and ‘there examined me against my protests.I shrieked, but no one came to my assistance.” She said the doctor examined her three times a day for three days, despite the fact that after the second day the mother of the dead infant was found.Only bread and water were given to her on those three days, she swore. She was released on the fourth day as the ship was coming into New York harbor, Two women who came over with Miss O'Rourke gave testimony in sup- ORKIN OFFICES TO RENT BUILDING 62-64-66 St.Joseph Street New and up-to-date Office Building, with all latest improvements heated, splendid light, electric passenger and freight elevators, thirteen fireproof veults, janierr service. Why Are Your Neighbour’s So HAPPY ?Because The Wife Bought An EDDY'S WASHBOARD And Now Washday Is À Joke. All kinds of Wash Boarde for all kinds of People.Bl wheels and ballbearings, Regular 60.| Wide, actually worth 60c a yari.Sale Price.1 trainee rnin Cetera.ses Luck Bluebird Sterling Silver Rings 250.reduced to déc, and to.$1.99 | or" y yar Bale Price.; number of the policies which he has espoused at the present session of the Legislature and that his course in regard to such matters as the stoppage of the nefarious library site “grab” the better control of the liquor tariff in the province, the proposals for improved highways, and the extension of the educational facilities of the province, was approved in terms no less sincere and no less enthusiastic than those employed in the most ardent of rock- have brought cheers from his party colleagues and tears from soma of ties spectators in the “galleries.“An infamy has been committed and the historian will scourge the author of this infamy and he will flay those who wish to justify it” said Sir Lomer. He described himself as the “mod- citizen who now occupies the posi- on of Prime Minister of thie.prew- ince, whose wi.~7 shoulders have "for nine years how upborne the honor aod dignity of this province,” and, who, for etill more years, preceding that, has guarded the fair came and fame of old Quebec while all or nearly ail, the others slept.Sir Lomrer iv credited by his friends with being as indefatigable student of the classics. And I make no doubt that, consclonsly or otherwise, Sir homer drew upon his store of Engilsh class- icat lore for this choice bit of rhetoric. In fact, | take from my library shelf a volume of Charles Dickens entitled “Martin Chuzzlewit” and there I find the simost exact counterpact of Sir Lomer, im words, is pose, in poise, in manner, in that masterpiece of Dickens creation, “Mr.Pecksnift.” Mr.Peckeniff it was who, the day of hls trial, “wore an apostolic look if ever he wore one in his life” Mr.Pecksuid, it was, who “seas a most exemplary man, fuller J virtuous precept than a copybook.” “Perhaps” writes his biographer,® “there never was à more mtoral man than Mr.Pecksniff; his person sleek but free from corpulency; his maner soft and oily; who carried the virtue of his tittle world upon his own well-mean- ing shoulders.” Almost a complete parallel for Sir Lomer’s speech can be found by those who are curious enough to look up the volume.Mr.Perron Shocked. And now we come to Mr.J.L.Perron, K.C, M.L.A,, a member of the Committee of Investigation whase feelings were also so badly lacerated by the develish plot to undo the government, that he could hardly give expression to them in the House.Perron, who started in at the investigation, like the proverbial Bull of nesses who weakened under the attack of his rural-lawyer-like cross-ex- amination, and who ended the investigation with a manner comparable only 10 the cooing deve; Perron who loudly demanded the production of the detectives’ daily records and when they were available, in sotto voice, objected to their appearance and secured their exclusion; Perron, who charged the chief witness with being “a Tory” without troubling to enquire what his politica really were; Perron who told another witness without the slightest occasion that he would be lucky if he got out of Quebec without being arrested; Perron, who spent a couple of hours in secret and confidential talk with Detective Biddingef on the afternoon of the day that Biddinger made his unexpected departure in response to a committee was through with him. What does Perron say in mitigation of the committee's report sustaining the charges?Perron saye that the newspaper which instigated the investigation had been guilty of assailing without cause financiers of repute in the City of Montreal—meaning, doubtless, the “financiers” who have been or who are exploiting for their own ends the city’s needs for a traction service. The paper alluded to can defend itself, but, speaking for the time during which it was under other coatrol, 1 can assure Mr.Perron that the only interests the paper attacked were those inimicable to the welfare of the citizens of Montreal. Here, again, is a fact for which abundant proof would have been forthcoming had the scope of the Legislative Committee’s enquiry not been re- Bashan, ready to eat alive any wit-.LA and his companions bad been taken by the border patrol in New Mexico there were conferences and exchanges between the State and War Department officials to detérmine what should be donc with the prisoners, who are temporarily held at Fort Bliss. As the crime charged agminst Castillo was committed in Mexican tesri- tosy, American courts are without jurisdiction, although many of she victims were Americans. In time of peace the prisoners would be sursen- dered under the extradition proceedings to the governor of the Mexican state of Chituahua for trial. But as Pres.Wilson has formally declared there is no government in Mexico, any extradition proceedings would involve grave difficulties. The State Department has been appealed to and pending its arrival at a decision, it is the intention of the War Department to retain Castillo and his party in custody under the same conditions as General Salazar and the Federal soldiers who came across the international line with arms in hand, thereby subjecting themselves to interment, 'PLEDGED TO WEAR STRAW HATS ALL THE YEAR ROUND San Diego Business Men's Plan for Advertising Balminess of the California City.San Diego, been sent to the Provincial Government,- requesting that certain works of improvement be made in the Chaudiere River, south of Beauceville, to prevent the spring floods, ete.The meeting decided to support the petition of the Beauceville Board of Trade.Lake St.Joba Railway.A letter was read from the Public Utilities Commission, enclosing a copy of a petition that had been presented to the Commission from Quebec & Lake St.John Railway, for an order approving of the location and use of flag stations, established or to be established on the line of the said railway, and asking the Board for an expression of opinion on the question, that is to come up for consideration before the Public Utilities Commission on the 24th instant.Result of Lawsuit, The petition is the Yesult of a law suit instituted against he Quebec & Lake St, John Railway by a shipper of goods, and judgment given against the company for loss amounting to The Judge in rendering judgment said “that as the Railway Act of the Province of Quebec has no special provision for flag stations the general law or the common law had to be applied, and therefore as it was made in the case before him, was not a good delivery, He further said that if the carrier agrees to carry goods to destination, the delivery of these goods is not complete by merely unloading at a place where anybody could steal or destroy them.Put concisely, the Judge, relying upon the Civil Code, said the obligations of the carrier are about the same as the obligations of the depository, who must take care of the goods or things entrusted to him until delivery to their owaer, The judgment being very important, not only to the Rallway Company, but the public, the Commission is asked by the company, if it has freight to flag stations, it will be necessary for the Railway Companies to refuse to accept the same, and it will-work a very great hardship on a line of the nature of the Quebec & Lake St.John Railway, where a great number of flag stitions have been established for the convenience oP the public, even at very short intervals of distance between one and another, and between regular stations, owing to the wildness of the country and the sparse settlement, the Railflag stations solely for the convenience of the people. The petitioners therefore request the Public Utilities Commission to take the matter into serious consideration, and issue an orler approving of the location and usc of all the flag stations established, or to be established on their line of railway, subject, of course, at any time to any orders that the Conmunission sees fit to issue with reference thereto, and approve of a general release form to be obtained from the shipper when goods are shipped to any such eta- tions, It is the opinion of the petitioners that the Commission have the undoubted power to iæue an order, and refer particularly to the Statutes of Quebec, 1911, Chanter 14, Article 742, which gives the Commission supervision over all public utilities, subject to the Legislative authority of the Province, and are given the power to make such orders regarding equipment, extension of works or systems, and any matters that are necessary for the safety or convenience of the public, or for the proper carrying put of any contract, charter or franchise, involving the use of publie\\property or rights, etc.The question was referred to the Committee on Freights and Trans portation, for consideration and action.- The meating next elected all the standing committees and boards of examiners, and thes adjourned Jos.Picard, and the members present ! jurisdiction, to approve of shipping ! but | way Company have established these.Mr.W.J.Brewer, of Toronto, is registered at the Chateau, Mr.P.R.Watters have opened in a sensational manner a carefully prepared and long premeditated war on the American tobacco trust.Dresden, the chief centre of the German tobacco industry, has been greatly surprised during the last few days at numerous mysterious and lengthy visits by strong forces of police to about 25 of the principal tobacco firms in the city.At first it was thought that the action was connected with an extensive and lately discovered system of tobacco smuggling over the Bohemian frontier, but now it transpires that the visits have to do with the alleged illegal doings of firms in connection | with the American trust.According to German law, any dealings with organizations the purpose of whose existence or the constitution of which is withheld from the state government.or dealings with a concern which seeks to achieve its purpose by illegal means, is punishable by imprisonment. It is stated that the expectations of the police have heen surpassed and that some firms believed to he free from all connection with the trust were found to be concerned. That the trust has been doing extremely well ‘rn Germany is thoucht to be confirmed hy the discovery that one firm last year incrensed its sale of cigarettes by SOA 000000.Germany.like other Eurapean governments, exercises 2 monopoly af the tobacco indretry and will not tnlerate any opposition.SIBERIAN BUTTER IN EUROPE —— Russian Eggs Also Have Good Market on Continent.St.Petersburg, Feb.18—Russian rs and Siberian butter have hecome most important factors in the progress of the world's commerce.A London provision salesman recently stated that if the supply of those Russian products was suddenly cut off from the English market there would he an exg and butter famine in the British Tales. The extent to which the Siberian butter trade has consequently developed in a comparatively short time is strikingly illustrated hy a report ceived from Barnaul.in the Province of Tamsk.in that town there has just heen held the first co-operative congress of delegates, from the union of dairv farming ‘artels,’ or associations, of Western Siberia. The event shows the rapid advance and success of the co-operative principle in Siberia, as well as the swift growth of the butter industry.Siberia dairy and peasant farmers find that while there appears to be an overproduction of butter for the European markets, there is a great want of cherse, and therefore, they progose to devote particular sttention to the development of this branch for the benefit of the British markets. The union ‘has already acquired its own steamers and barges on the River Obi.SENATOR WINS SUIT.Oklahoma City, Okla, Feb.18—A verdict in favor of United States Senstor Thomas F.Gore Wilson of inconsistency in his views of the birding effect of the Democratic platform and charging that “greed for the railroads and the audacious claims of Great Britain seem far more potent with our President than the appeal of the womanhood of the nation,” Senator Bristow, Republican, of Kansas, turned discus sion of woman suffrage in the Senate today into a vigorous debate on the proposed repeal of the free tolls of the provision of the Panama Canal Act.Senator Bristow's attack brought to the defence of the President, several Republican as well as Democratic Senators, while it" served also as the signal for opening the fight within the Democratic party against repeal of the tolls exemption provision.Senator Chamberlain, of Oregon, Democrat, dramatically declared that he would not “stultify” himself by telling bis constituents that he had not kept his platform pledge on the ta!ls question, “because the President of the United States does not agree with me.” President Is Busy.* While Senators.were thus enganed in the first open discussion of the approaching battie in Congress over the chief executive's desire for reversal of the Panama policy, the President was himself engaged.with leaders of the House of Representatives who are opposed to repudiating the declaration of the party platform. He discussed the situation with Majority Leater Underwood, and Representative Kitchen, of North Carolina, but so far as could be learned, did not convert them to his view that the provision g-ant- ing free tolls to American vassels violates the Hay-Paunceiote treaty and embarrasses the administration in its foreign relations.Charges Inconsistency, Senator Bristow based his charge of inconsistency against the President on the ground that he had told the suffragiste he could not advocate their cause because the Democratic party had not expfessed itself in the matter, while he proposed that Congress should reverse itself on the to'ls question, despité the fact that the party had endorséd its action. In this connection, the Kansas Senator mentioned the reference in the Baltimore platform “favoring “a single Presidential term,” and asked whether the President #d “interpre: tuis plank in harmony with his position as to suffrage, or as to’cancel tolls.” When Senator Bristow said that the Transcontifiental’ railroads had for years been belind the fight against free tolls for American ships, and intimated that they had influenced the President, Senator Lorge.of Muss achusetts, Republican member of the Roreign Relations Committee, took the floor to declare that the President was actuated in his attitude othe t-Il question snlely by his desire to restore the United States to its former prestige among nations.“The President does not like to see the United States an outlaw among nations” added the Massachussets Senator.” Referring to the visit of woman suffragists to President Wilson last December, Senator Bristow quoted this from the chief executive's reply to their request for support of the equal sufirfiage constitutional amendment: ; “When my private opinion is asked by those who are co-operating with me, 1 am glad to give it.but | am not at liberty until I speak for somebody besides myself to urge legislation upon Congress.” Canada Also Concerned When the tolls question came up, the Kansas Senator continued, it was not brought before the President “by the good women of the country, but by a representative of the Englisn Government, whose action had been instigated by the American and Canadian Transcontinental railroads ani British shipping interests.” He quoted the Baltimore platform in its en- the Baltimore platform on the tolls question, because it did mot sepresent the spber judgment of the party on that point.Sesator Chamberlain, of Oregon, who woiced the first formal opposition to the.President within the party | ranks, said: | Question of Rsilroads.| ! “It is a matter of history that the railways of this country, particular- iy’ the Transcontinental railways, prevented pe construction of the Panama Canal for years, and when the question of granting coastwise vessels freedom from tolls was under discussion here in the Senate those of us wbo know the lobbyists of the railway companies could look up in any of the galleries and recognize those who were lobbying for the railway companies here and opposing this part of the Panama Canal Act.Having failed to defeat the building of the canal, they now invade the field of diplomacy.“Where are we going to stop? Are we going to listen to an insistence which may be made hereafter by some foreign power against railway- owned ships passing through the canal? That violates the treaty as much as the free tolls provision. Are we going to dismantle our forts? Are we going to say that our naval vessels must pay tolls? Some nation may say tuat they violate the treaty with as much as Great Britain now protests to us.” WANT ANOTHER BEACON.Providence, R.I., Feb.18—The ac- | cident to the St.Lawrence route, in anticipation of a large passenger traffic during the coming season of navigation, have commenced the work of organization to meet the situation.Mr.William Stott, general passen- gef agent of the C, P.R, has been in Quebec the past few days in conference with the local passenger agent, Mr.Geo.J.P.Moure, and making arrangements for the C.P.Rimmigration service in the new immigration buildings, on the Louise docks. It is’ Gefinitely decided that the new Allan Line steamers Calgerian and Alsatian, will make the sort of Quebec this ‘summer terminus, and use the same berth as the C.P.R Empresses. This being possidle as the Empresses and new Allan Lines will arrive glternately during the summer, and the C.P.R, will handle the immigration and general passenger service, providing their separate terms for esch steamer to the west, the same as is done with the company’s own steamer service. It is also likely that the C.N.Rsteamers the Royal Edward and Royal George, will make the port of Quebec thelr terminus. The company has been given an option on { berth accommodation by the Quebec Harbor Commission, next to the C.P.R.and Allan Line steamers, and should the company decide, as expected.to have their steamers remain at Quebec, it" will mean that three of the most important steamship lines will make the port of Quebec their terminal station.Labor Question. The fact that so many large vessels will make the port of Quebec their terminäa next season, is causing an anxiety among the steamship agents and stevedores, as to how the demand for labor can be met.A TALK WITH THE GREAT GERARDY.The world Tenowned ‘cellist, or the great Gerardy, arrived in the city yesterday, and will take part in the concert at the Auditorium tonight, with the celebrated baritone Hinshaw and Quebec Symphony Orchestra.Mr Gerardy_is on his third professional visit to Quebec, and in a conversation with 3: Chronicle representative at the CHateau Frontenac last night it always gave him a pleasure to visit the old city.Speaking of his concert, Mr.Garardy said: | am now 36 yenrs of age, and for over twenty years I have been-giving concerts.I graduated from the Belgium Conscervatory of Music at the age of 10 years and 6 months, and when only 11 years old startéd out on a concert tour in England.I continued with my sisters, however, until I reached my 13th year, when I was left to my own resources.1 have frequently as 3 boy, played before the late Queen Victoria, making my first acquaintance with Her Majesty, when T was 16 years old, and after that was a guest at Windsor Castle for a week at a time.- The late Queen was very good to me, and the pin 1 now wear, a horseshoe diamond, was presented to me by Her late Majesty, and I prize it above all my possessions.: I came to Quebec on my first visit eight years ago, and two years later returned under the management of Mr, Gauvin, who was an amateur im- presserio at the time, but has since developed into a successful professional, i I gave a concert in Montreal on Teusady night last, which was a phe- nominal success. The theatre was so packed, that the people bought seats to sit in the musicians space, and even on the stage, and standing room at a premium. It was the largest audience ever crowded into a Montreal theatre, an’ inspiring sight, and Î have been since told that hundreds who sought admission were turned away, I have played before all the erown- ed heads of Bufope and have been awarded several decorations, besides being honored.in Spain with the Knighthood of Isabella Catholica. Before coming - over to American on my present tour | gave concerts in Russia, Austria, Germany and England, in all 44, and in England gave concerts with the soprano Tettresini. After 1 leave Quebec I go to Boston, thence to Detroit, New Orleans, the West and California.1 use a 1710 ‘cello, known as the golden age Strudivarus, which I purchased from Hort snd San, in England, which to me is priceless.- It is insured’ for $23,000, but 1 would not part with it for one hundred times that amount.—————— ——
