then follow the river up on the east side to a point opposite the one where we left it on the west side.YVe were told by one of the Council at that time, that the intention was to use tins bridge as long as it would answer the purpose, but when a new bridge was required it would be put upon the old site; so we have tor years put up with what we considered a public nuUance.Learning a short time ago that the Council advertised for tenders to put a new bridge on the present site, we got up a petition to have it placed upon the old site, the direct route.Thi* petition was signed by one hundred legal voters of the town, and these one hundred pay about oue half of the taxes of the town, as they include Cochrane, Cibb, Judah, and quite a number of our wealthiest farmers.Through some misunderstanding the petition did not get in till late in the forenoon and although the Council knew the petition was coming in, they decided it was too late to receive it—and a tender was accepted.Tiie petitioners afterwards requested a special meeting of the Council ; and seeing the dissatisfaction, (I might almost say indignation,) manifested by the petitioners, two of the councillors called the meeting.YYre presented our petition and they adjourned till afternoon in order to view the two sites. They decided it would cost two thousand dollars to build a bridge on the upper site ; and we were willing to admit that with all the alterations they had proposed ! making, their bridge would cost the j town only one thousand ; but we presented them a subscription of one hundred and thirty dollars from these very petitioners who, hj' assessment, pay oue half the cost and offered a guarantee to make it up to two hundred dollars, which would make the extra cost, if their estimate was correct, only eight hundred dollars. On the grounds, as they said, of the cost, and because the contract was taken and work commenced, (although some of the council had repeatedly said the upper site was where the bridge ought to he ) they unanimously voted against it.At the next regular meeting of the Couucn we put in an appearance, “armed and equipped.” YY'e offered, if they would allow us the old bridge and thirteen hundred dollars, to give them a perfectly satisfactory guarantee that the contractor should [Hit upon the upper site a bridge, in every respect as good as he was to build on the lower s te, and discharge the Council from any liability connected with contract, that the Creek Bridge should he built—the hutments and wings to approaches to the River Bridge, a good passable road from the Bridge to the Coaticook road, and war- ! rant the bridge to stand for five years. These terms we w«re prepared, then and \\ there, to comply with ; instead of taking | any action upon it, we were accused of j impertinence for daring to introduce the j subject again and were dismissed with- ! out any “ benediction.” People in the town and out of the ! town have always said that buying the j Long Bridge was the most foolish thing \\ the)r ever knew a Council to do—they ! never can say that again.creased in the proportion of only one fifth. He rejoices over the same yvon-| derful result in New Brunswick and Nova j Scotia, where the French element has j taken the lead.He boasts of the 1,298,-929 now representing the number of French Canadians in the Dominion, closely followed by the 957.403 Irishmen, whilst the English only number 881.301 and the Scotch 099,803.He adds :— “The French Canadian group only owes its increase to natural multiplication.the other groups, on the contrary, would soon he swamped by number if to cope with a couflagration of the mag- i qqie Dublin Chamber of Commerce rittide which so rapidly developed itself, a verv crowded meeting yesterday The next alarm was from the house afternoon.Mr.Metlaw, in the course of G.N.Cleveland, at least a third of a remarks, called upon both Catholic mile distant, and before the owner could au(j Protestants alike to unite and put reach the building the fire had obtained down the crime that was now raging mnE OFFICERS of the 53rd BATTALION I are requested to meet at the oftice of Lieut.-Colonel Felton, in Beckett’s Block, Uiis (Friday) evening, May 19, at 8 o’clock, for the purpose of electing a Band Committee, dc.A full attendance is requested.By order.A.N.WORTHINGTON, j w3 a most desirable residence. It is in a very healthy part of tlie city and commands an extensive and beautiful view of the Valley of the St Francis. For further particulars apply ou the premise*, o r to the undersigned. Also for Sale, TWO NEAT COTTAGES on Peel Street, occupied by the undersigned, within four minutes walk of P.O.Good water and stable on the premises. The houses have been recently repaired and are in a first-rate condition.L W DOWUIN, Sec-Treas Sherbrooke May 10 1882 tf-30 SPORTSMEN ATTENTION.\\1 their spring assortment of Fishing Tackle A good assortment of READY-MADE CLOTHING.Suits and Shirts made to order.(1 E.ROBITAILLE, Cormier’s Block, Wellington Street SHERBROOKE.-GENTS____ READY-MADE CLOTHING!
