NEW YORK,, July 10.—John W.Davis, of West Virginia, and Governor Charles W.Bryan, of Nebraska, are the Democratic party’s candidates for president and vice-president.Emerging on the one hundred and third ballot as the Democratic National Convention’s choice for the presidential nomination, the West Virginia lawyer and diplomat swept away great waves of bitterness churned up during the fifteen preceding days of stormy conflict. Then taking command immediately, the new head of the party guided the cor-eention swiftly toward the selection of his running mate, the brother of William Jennings Bryan, his most vigorous opponent throughout the balloting. When the convention adjourned at"2.24 a.m.today it had filled many-new pages of political history, rising in dramatic force from the violent struggle twelve days ago over naming the Ku Klux Klan in the party platform, through the record-breaking deadlock between the supporters of William G.McAdoo and Governor Alfred E.Smith, that held through one hundred ballots before a presidential nomination was in sight.NEW PRECEDENT IN PERSONAL APPEARANCE OF NOMINEE TO ACKNOWLEDGE GRATITUDE AND TO TAKE COMMAND And in the closing scenes came a*-—-—- new precedent in the personal appearance of the nominee to acknowledge his gratitude, and his prompt assumption of command. Not all of the scars suffered in the long struggle had been healed at the end, despite that the votes which lifted the Davis forces to victory had come from both of the principal contending groups that had fought each other to a standstill for more than a week.A handful of die-hards in the McAdoo and Smith camps took no part in the colorful and harmonious conclusion.Governor Smith himself, after sending Mr.Davis a message of ‘best wishes for success and my promise of heartiest support,” accepted an invitation to address the convention last night, and reiterated his pledge.“I’ll take off my coat and vest,” he said, “and so will everybody else who follows me in this state and do what we can to improve conditions in the United States by the election of the ticket.” A similar invitation extended to Mr.McAdoo was not accepted and he made no comment beyond a message to Mr.Davis, saying: “Please accept congratulations on your nomination.” It was said at the almost deserted campaign headquarters of the California candidate that he and his family would sail in a few days for Europe.BRYAN HAPPY.Wm.Jennings Bryan, although asserting he would “support the ticket” was clearly disappointed at first, but his spirits rose as developments progressed toward the nomination of his brother for the vice-presidency, and at the end he was smiling broadly, convinced, he told friends, that the decision to put the western governor on the ticket assured a campaign for progressive principles.Senator Thomas J.Walsh, of Montana, chairman of the convention, after Mr.Davis had swept the field on the one hundred and third ballot, avoided the vice-presidential nomination by acclamation only by declaring an adjournment until 8.30 p.m., in the face of a thundering chorus of “Noes” against such action. He maintained his stand, insisting his usefulness would be greater as a senator.SKETCH OF JOHN WILLIAM DAVIS, DEMOCRAT NOMINEE (Amoclatei] Pre»» De«patcli) NEW YORK, July 10.—John William Davis, the Democrat nominee for president, was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, in 1873, the only son in a family of six children. He graduated from Washington and Leo University at the age of nineteen. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree, he spent three years studying law and won law degree at tho ago of twenty-two in 1805.In 1808 he was elected to the Virginia Legislature. In 1010 the Democrats of his district chose him for representative in Congress and he was elected in a district that had been Republican for twenty years. He was re-elected in 1012.' In 1018 Mr.Davis wont to Europe as a member of a commission to treat with Germany as to the exchange of prisoners of war, and upon the resignation of Walter Hines Page, Mr.Wilson made Mr.Davis the United States Ambassador to Great Britain.Mr.Davis took up his work in London in November, just as tho war came to an ond.In his capacity of Ambassador he was present in Versailles during the peace conference.Mr.Davis’ name as a candidate for president was placed before the Democratic National Conference in .-.an l rancisco in 1920 by Governor John J.Cornwell, of West Virginia. At that time he was Ambassador in London. After retiring from the diplomatic service in 1921, Mr.Davis began th~ practice of law in New York City in association with the firm of Stetson, Jennings, Russell and Davis.swlrair SILVER FIND AT FORT WILLIAM Curious Part of Find Is that II Seems to Be a Rediscovery.(Associated Pr«*s Despatch) FORT WILLIAM, July, 10.-+ A silver discovery iust announced by George Harris and R.J.Gloss, of Fort William, is said by the discoverers to be one of the most sensational finds of the year in mineral claims.Until they have finally secured their locations, the discoverers are not making definite sta-I lenient as to its exact location, des-I cribing it vaguely as about one ! hundred miles from Fort William ; to the northeast. This would brim?j it north of Pays Flat, close to I which station on the Canadian Pa-I c.'fic Railway, silver was discovered many years ago.The curious part of the discoverv is that it seems to be a re-discovery, as old buildings and supplies supposed to be fifty years old were the first indications found of a mining claim, the silver being finally located in the side of a high hill and being six feet ;n width. That they have made a discovery of rich silver ore cannot be doubted, as the samples thev brought in are heavily mineralized with gentite, as rich ns the host that has been taken from the older workings at Silver Islet and the old mines at Silver Mountain.-^-—- CONSERVATIVE RETURNED IN BRITISH BYE-ELECTION jBfcrsy - iiiTii rip—T,-maaiSBmmmmmmmmmm > ,m;wm Sr/tsi w ¦ i r « P* r ¦ WM < ’ ¦'. V , t- ^ v » ¦f&Sr " i • * *• !)(,*• T.v* .* *.üÉisisftSiis : p wm WMmmm 4 «i’U- ¦ - ~ to'#! :5,000 for the inspector general has been suggested.! of Any Bank During Wartime.(A»Bociated Pre## Despatch) TORONTO, July, 10.— “The chief reason for asking the Government to make good depositors’ loss is that Sir Thomas White said in 1916 that he did not wish to expose the weakness of any bank durii wartime, because the effect would be nothing short of a national calamity”, said Mayor Hiltz in a letter to Right Hon.Arthur Meighen on the Home Bank situation.TIONARY MOVEMENT.(Associated Press Despatch) BUENOS AIRES, July 10.—Unofficial advices received by the newspaper La Nacion from Rio Janeiro and Port Alegre, Brazil, by way of Montevideo, assert that the rebellion at Sao Paulo is far from being dominated by the Government, and that the state of Parana and part of ;he state of Rio Grande have joined the insurrectionary movement.La Nacion's informants say the rebel resistance in Sao Paulo is not limited to the Luz barracks, adding: “The bombardment is general and very severe in the principal streets. The resistance given by the rebels led to the embarkation of new reinforcements of federal forces Wednesday from Rio Janeiro for Santos, to proceed by land to Sao Paulo.“It is felt that the situation is Rio is insecure.A certain effervescence and restlessness is evident.Travellers are advised not to go to Rio for the present.” The advices from Port, Alegre say the insurrectionary movement “has | attained considerable proportions and appears to be aggravated by the fact that other states appear to be joining the Sao Paulo rebels,” and adds, ‘it is asserted that Parana and a considerable part of the Rio Grande have joined the movement.” DISSATISFACTION AMONG MEN AT PET AW A WA CAMP Explained Haw He Had Isolated Organism That Causes
