DON’T MISS FESTIVAL DU PAIN m JUNE 10-11-12-13-14, 1998 The voice of the Eastern Townships since 1897 Thought of the Day The keen spirit seizes the prompt occasion.— Hannah More f)0 CENTS Monday, June 8, 1998 Horse-betting with a Twist PERRY BEATON/CORRESPONDENT Eyed Be Te Riffic and Dewdrop drew a crowd who were waiting for them to make a deposit in one of the squares laid out in the paddock at the Ayer's Cliff Fairgrounds on Sunday during the weekend's Children's Wish Foundation musical fund-raiser.The horses were extremely patient, much to the impatience of those who wagered. For more on the fun-filled Music Fest, please see Tuesday’s Record. It’s a natural phenomenon - Hydro-Québec Farmer gets a charge out of unplugged fence By Rita Legault Shipton Part-time horse farmer Robert Mayette was shocked this spring when he discovered he didn’t have to plug in his electric fence for it to work.Mayette’s farm is located underneath a pair of 735-kv lines which cross about three hectares of his property on their way from the Nicolet and Des Appalach-es power stations to the Des Cantons substation outside Windsor. While repairing his fence this spring, Mayette was surprised to get an electric shock. As he continued to change isolators along the unplugged fence, he continued to get jolted by the mysteriously electrified fence.“It really pinched,” he said, adding he was glad his horses were in the stable at the time.Confused, the farmer called Hydro- Québec to come and take a look.Mayette said Hydro sent out a crew which planted a metal post into the ground and attached it to the wires on his fence. He said Hydro told him it wasn't dangerous.“It’s funny. They say it’s not dangerous but they installed some converters," he said.Hydro-Québec spokeswoman Marcelle Trépanier said the electric shocks Mayette got from his fence were due to a natural phenomenon which occurs in that area because two hydroelectric lines meet.Electric and magnetic fields under high voltage transmission lines are a common occurrence, she said, adding the utility resolved the problem by installing electric fence filters known as band pass filters.SEE CHARGE, PAGE 3 mmê 'NT*; RITA LEGAULT Farmer Robert Mayette points to the electric fence which gave him a shock even though it was unplugged.ALL OUR PRICES ARE DISPLAYED -NO SURPRISES! 2200 Sherbrooke St., MAGOG (Quebec) 843-6571 Trust and Cowfideimce Gilles Dion says
