we are not being compensated in any way. Please see Trees on Page 6 Pierre Marziali Pharmacist Familiprix pier Hours re.niarziall@familiprix.com ; Mon.-We%##' i«4»§; % i , •>.< M :¦?* Love, Mom, Jen, John, Connie and children Angelica, Anthony, Trinda, Holden and granddaughter Lannah PREPARE YOUR LAND NOW TO ENJOY THE SUMMER PAYSAGISTES COWANSVILLE LANDSCAPERS • Complete landscaping service • Landscaping annual contract • Architecture service • Natural stones Winston Wells, prop.178, ch.West Brome, Rte.139, West Brome, QC JOE 2P0 Tel.: Office: Fax: 450-263-6891 450-266-0757 450-266-4445 a*, m », .I, KNOWLTON 2008 Antique Show & Sale May 17 & 18, 2008 Saturday & Sunday, 10 a.m.to 5 p.m.Adm.: $6.00 Friday, May 16, 2008 Gala evening 7 p.m.-9 p.m.Admission $40.For tickets call: 243-5556 or 243-6782 Dealers specializing in: Canadiana, Quebec Pine, Pressed Glass, Antiquarian Books, Fine Art, Pottery, Porcelain, Jewelery, Silver, etc.L at: Centre Lac Brome Mew Community Center 270 Victoria St., Knowlton page 8 • MOTHER’S DAY • BROME COUNTY NEWS Wednesday, May 7, 2008 Tribute to a mother Her smile lights up the world By Alanna Fahey Brome County News correspondent Ten years ago, shortly after my family and I moved to Sutton, there appeared on our front lawn a woman whose smile lit up our world. She introduced herself as the mother of Matthew and Morgan and she informed us that if we wanted to go to “Fair”, then she would surely show us the way.My kids, knowing that this woman would be asked to sit for tea, ran with her children to our backyard and they played for hours, as Karen explained to me the finer points of living in this small town.Throughout the years that 1 lived in Sutton, I watched Karen guide her children through what can only be described as the somewhat turbulent waters of the school system. This is not a comment on the Please see Tribute on Page 9 Meihmt cj)aif Samedi 1C mai / Satwiday, May 1C Jinawtten (fdd 5e££oun Mail Rôti de boeuf et porc / Roast beef à?pork Souper 6:00 - 7:00 Dinner Danse 8:00 à fermeture / to dosing Music “SilverSpurs” Prix de présence / Door piizes Donation 10,00$ WÊÊÊBÊKM Ginette Gntallh, Owner Miche/ Gazai lie Owner It’s time to treat )ttl Mums For Moms COURTESY It's a Mother’s Day exhibit that lasts all weekend. The Brome County Museum hosts a show May 9, 10 and 11, titled May Rowers. The original paintings are by Susan Pepler. The vernissage is Friday, May 9 from 5 p.m.to 8 p.m.Show hours are 10 a.m.to 8 p.m.And that’s at the museum at 130 Lakeside Road in Knowlton.A I JRl 1 Entreprises acroix inc.R.B.Q.; Or “Lynn, if this you calling, don’t worry I am on my way to check on Alan. Will call you as soon as I get to your house.” Her kids were never left to fend for themselves.Husband John works long hours and is an excellent provider, and Karen makes sure that their kids benefit from his work. They played soccer, basketball, baseball and have taken just about every class their little hearts desired. She is a great believer in tasting life and she is always encouraging her children to try new things. She lives quietly, without pretense. She helps quietly, without needing to be thanked. And she does it time and time again.I have seen her car going down the road on a wintery, snowy night, well past midnight, to check on someone or to pick up some kids MOTHER’S DAY PROMOTION P'Unce Pupenl Pine}.JleuAy PcutcUe, Pauline-, MicAehne g Qad 286-A Knowiton Rd., Knowlton (450)243-6413 call — find stuff.“I try to find the right resources that people need.I find every organization that can help, from Sutton, Please see Help on Page 10 | Mother’s Day Special Bouquet de roses lié \ à l'européenne y Lè Pois de Senteur /'487 CH KNOWLTON ¦ T 450-242-5888 who have been to a party and need a drive home.Driving is Karen’s second job.Seems she is always on the road going here and there, almost always because she is headed somewhere to help someone.I guess you could say she is a mother to a lot of people.A lot of people besides her family depend on her, and she has never, not once, complained of the many tasks asked of her.She is happy to be able to help. When 1 asked Karen DesNoyers what she wished for her children for now and in the future, she said: “Some success, no matter how big or how small, just some success.” I asked, “What defines success for you Karen?” She replied, “To be happy.” Happy Mother's Day.Fête des Mères - Happy Mother*! Denis is in the middle of organizing events for Family Day.On May 17 at the Curley Street Legion Hall in Sutton, there’ll be a com-m u n i t y garage sale, balloons, and games. The day starts at 9 DE P A R T MENT HvHiiiiys Spi't iul Every f),n.' ^ r 29 lakeside, Knowlton Tel: 450-242-1445 Business Hours: Open every day Mon.-Fri.: 8:30-9 p.m.Sat.-Sun.: Delivery FREE in Sutton on Fridav! a.m.and ends with a bicycle parade that will feature children who’ve decorated their bikes (there are prizes to be won). That’s from 1 to 2 p.m.from the Legion to the fire station on Principale Street. There’ll be free popsicles and milk, and police will be on hand to check out children's car seats to see that they’re properly installed. She plans monthly dances (also held at the Legion). The fifth will be held May 24.“There’s no place to dance really in Sutton." Families — mostly moms, some dads — and all their kids come by to dance. There’s no alcohol, and because kids are welcome parents can have a night out where the kids can play, the grownups can dance, and there’s no need to pay a babysitter. The music is danceable World Beat, and the kids love it.“The moms are dancing are dancing all night,” says Denis.“There’s all this energy!” “We don’t raise a lot of money, but people are happy. It’s something special.” Entry is $5 per adult; kids are free, and things start at 7:30 p.m.with a tam-tam jam, then music at 8:30 p.m., and things wrap up by midnight. And of course, there’s Denis’ space.(She was interviewed by Brome County'News while a birthday party was being held right next to her.) She’s also connected to a space where moms can drop their kids off for a few hours of play on some weekdays, grab a cuppa tea, and chat with other adults. Not everything is perfect for moms, however.Finding a doctor, dealing with postpartum depression, money.Denis can help there, too.And she says there are dozens of groups that offer services to those in need.“There are a lot of organizations in the Eastern Townships.I was amazed to see how many can help.” Denis will do the legwork and give you the name and direct phone number for the person who can help.Overwhelmed by housework?Denis has a contact number.Relationship worries?Ditto. Are you having money problems? There are groups that help with budgeting, there are food banks, and Denis has a small fund that she can use for emergency help.Unexpected back-to-school expenses, or winter clothing.“We buy it for them,” says Denis.“We have arrangements with people who sell boots,” for example, at a cheaper cost.Depression, suicide, coping with unemployment. There is help out there. There are lots of resources for pregnant women, those seeking home births, and follow-up after birth. There’s resources out there for kids with learning disabilities, for those having trouble reading and passing their classes.Denis’ municipally-sponsored job as Sutton’s family resource person is part-time.She also coordinates a collective kitchen, where people get together to cook meals (kids are also welcome).A Centraide grant pays for some of the ingredients (canned tomatoes for sauce, say, or salt), and the cooks buy the rest cheaply in bulk.A portion works out to about Si, and the food can be reheated in a jiffy for the family. There’s a vegetarian group, one that cooks organic, and another that s focussed on the most inexpensive meals possible.Every time Denis has enough new people, she starts up another collective kitchen. The best mother’s day gift ever can be reached at 4 5 0538-7494.i lo^e \ou Royaume fu Steak VL STEAK UOII S F STEAK HOUSE “REAL STEAK LOVERS DINE WITH US” Table d’Hôte Menu 2^ Oux ufreccaittf ta utead fait
