Following is a bit of background history on Cowansville, courtesy of the Cowansville Historical Society.Early steps Cowansville’s history begins in 1798 with the arrival of the first settler, Jabob Ruiter, the son of a Loyalist. In 1800, Ruiter built a flour mill and sawmill on the south shore of the Ya-maska River, near the site of the present bridge on South Street. The mill contributed a lot to the community’s economy. In 1805, Ruiter named the Dr.A.C.Daniels Ltd.maker of (sMOOth) It's Udderly Great!!
