The company recently started creating monthly games on timely topics for the opinion section of the New York Times website.Bogost says his games aren’t meant to be digital lectures or pure entertainment, but rather “the video game equivalent of an editorial cartoon.” Video and computer games can be powerful educational tools because they go beyond mere discussion to simulate results in a virtual environment, says Nathon Gunn, CEO of Bitcasters, a Toronto company that produces online, TV and gaming content.The “stealth aspect” of enlightenment-by-gaming is also attractive to anyone with a message to broadcast, he adds.People play games simply because they’re fun, so any lesson embedded within them gets a better reception than an obvious lecture, he says.Bitcasters recently launched Histori-Canada, a computer game directed at teens that lets players relive or drastically rewrite the country’s past.Although “serious games" like it are an increasingly popular category, Gunn says the entire video game medium still suffers from an identity crisis.“People often think of games in a very narrow way,” he says.“They might think it’s running around shooting my enemies’ heads off, but there are many different types of games." :yMX' Put the heat to the meat Barbecue By Irene Seiberling CanWest News Service It’s barbecue season — a time to savour cooking outdoors.As Canadians from coast to coast fire up their barbecues for another sizzling season, it’s also the time when emergency rooms start seeing barbecue-related injuries, and firefighters called to fires started by barbecues.“Our firefighters respond to probably half a dozen to a dozen incidents involving barbecues every year," said Angela Prawzick, public education officer with the Regina Fire Department.All barbecue-related fires are preventable, Prawzick insisted.It’s as simple as doing a soapy water test.“What we recommend is that before you start using your barbecue for the season, or if you haven’t done it yet, do it now: Simply mix up a soapy water solution (dish detergent and water) and run that solution along your fittings and along your hose,” Prawzick said.“And keep the barbecue itself off.But turn on the valve at the propane tank,” she added.“And if after you turn on the valve there are bubbles that come out of that soapy solution, you know you’ve got a leak.So turn off the valve at the tank and make sure that you get your barbecue serviced wherever it’s leaking.” There could be a problem with the connections or the fittings, or the hose line itself, which carries the propane, could be cracked and leaking propane.As a result, when you go to start the barbecue, instead of having a nice flame in the barbecue itself, you’ve got a flame where the propane is actually leaking out of either the connections or the hose line itself.Prawzick has witnessed firsthand what can happen when a propane barbecue leak goes undetected.She recalled one incident a few years ago, which turned a fun meal sour.“This again was a situation where there was unfortunately a leak somewhere — either in the connections or the hose itself — and unfortunately where that leak was occurring, when the barbecue was ignited, it wasn’t just the barbecue that was ignited, but the propane where it was leaking also ignited.” Fortunately, no one was hurt in this incident, but damage to the home was extensive.Prawzick offered these safety tips: • Send spiders and insects packing.Check to make sure there are no webs or nests causing blockages.• Never use a barbecue indoors.Make sure your barbecue isn’t placed up against your house or a fence — anything that’s combustible.• Before you turn on the propane, your match or lighter should already be burning.If the barbecue doesn’t ignite, turn the valves off and wait five minutes.• Once lit, don’t move the barbecue or leave it unattended.• Always store propane barbecue tanks outside.Keep flammable substances away from it and don’t smoke around it.• Be aware of potential burn injury.Use long-handled, utensils when cooking and don’t wear loose clothing that could catch fire.• Keep children and pets away from grills.• Always light a gas barbecue with the lid open.A leaking or open valve can cause propane to accumulate under the lid or in the basin and could explode when lit.• When finished, turn off the cylinder valve first.“Turn it off completely.And then turn off the grill controls,” Prawzick said.“If you turn off the valve first, any propane that’s in the line will burn off before you close off the barbecue controls." • If a fat or grease fire starts in your barbecue, don’t try to put it out with water.It will only spread the flames.Turn off the propane and close the lid to smother the fire.• And if fire has engulfed the propane tank, evacuate the area immediately — at least 200 metres away — and call the fire department. iTHE, RECORD TALK July 6 - in its 18th year.Markgraf has directed it before and she says she loves the piece.The actors are Charles Raywood, who has created some fascinating characters, and Thomas Malone, a dynamic young man and member of the On The Spot Improv Group.Raywood has appeared in the last two Hudson Village Theatre Christmas pantomimes, Snow White and Treasure Island.In 2006, he appeared in Theatre Panache’s The Dining Room by A.R.Gurney playing various roles.His most recent performance was splaying Clayton Fry in Norm Foster’s Opening Night.Malone is a graduate of John Abbott’s professional program.Some of his credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Repercussion Theatre, Treasure Island with Hudson Theatre and See How They Run with Three Blind Mice Productions.Markgraf tells how she has worked with the stage manager, and lighting, sound and costume designers before and trusts their judgment.“We are really looking forward to coming down to The Piggery as it is such a fantastic venue with a wonderful large stage and great technical possibilities — the show will be sooo scary! The North Hatley area is really beautiful and that is another big bonus,” added Markgraf.Markgraf created Theatre Panache in 2004.She was the founder and artistic director of Village Theatre West in Hudson (she went from producing one play in a tent next to Mon Village Restaurant in St.Lazare to renovating the old, historic, railway station in Hudson and converting it into an intimate 149-seat theatre).She also ran the professional, English-speaking non-profit theatre for 11 years before resigning in 2003.Drawing its audience from Montreal and Ottawa areas, Village Theatre West now runs year round.There are two performances of The Woman in Black on July 7 and 11 (matinee at 2 p.m.and a show at 8 p.m.) and one evening performance on July 6 and 10.For prices and reservations, call 819-842-2431.The Piggery is located at 215 Chemin Simard, North Hatley.COURTESY A haunted house.Bwaa-haaaa-haaaaa.Free Shore denaturalization Workshops This summer, the Lake Massawippi Water Protection Association will be offering some shore renaturalization activities.- Demonstration of the different planting techniques - Advices for choosing the right plants and natural landscaping - Renaturalization kits and documentation.- Purchase shrubs at 50% paid by APLM Reserve your spot for the FREE workshops: June 30th fpml July 7th and July 14th Other dates on demand.Workshops can take place on your shore._______________ To learn more, call! 819-822-6495 massawippi 31541 ii • i » I I I « C ' .I i page 4 July 6 - July 12, 2007 RECORD Arts Briefs Art Naïf The Musée in-t e r n a -„ t i o n a 1 e d’art naïf de Magog is holding a show and sale of works showcasing (Quebec artists.It’s titled Coup de pouce aux artistes and is on until July 29.The museum is open daily from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m., and entry is free.It’s at 81 Desjardins Street, suite 100, in Magog.Call 819-843-2099.Dunham en français Dunham’s summer open-air movie project launches its fourth year on Friday with Cinema Paradiso.This 1988 movie is a drama in which a man recalls his childhood and early cinema.That’s July 6 at dusk, around 8:30 p.m.On June 20, the movie will be Con-gorama.On Aug.3, La Science des Reves.And on Aug.17, it’s a selection of shorts from Quebec and around the world.Everything is in French.You’ll need to bring chairs or blankets.The cost is $8 for adults;
