Elvis was there, Ed Sullivan forced to listen to him throughout eternity.“Fourth Circle; hypocrites and politicians.” This was my stop and I stepped out into a cavern bigger than the Kahnewake Bingo Palace, maybe bigger than the SkyDome — certainly a whole lot gloomier because you couldn’t make out the further walls or see anything in the corners. There was rubbish everywhere: minutes from endless meetings, Pilsen ¦ms©**- Restaurant & Pub 55 Main North Hatlty THANK YOU to all patrons of the Pilsen who encouraged us in our second year; we were very pleased to serve you.And now it’s time for our annual “R, R & R” (Renovation, Rest & Relaxation).- We will close November 12 to December 11, 1990.- We will REOPEN DECEMBER 12,1990.We look forward to seeing you after December 12th to sample our New Menu. Also, please plan early for your Christmas season “get-togethers” at the Pilsen. Thanks again for your patronage.Gilles & Gail Peloquin & Staff (819) 842-2971 forms to fill and file, permits, licenses, certificates, laws and ordinances, rules and regulations in duplicate and triplicate.Hundreds of glum and silent figures were listlessly wandering around with big canvas shoulder bags and spiked canes. They speared the trash and stuffed it into their bags without hope because they weren’t allowed upstairs until they’d cleaned up the mess they’d made and whenever their bags were full, they had no choice but to empty them out and start all over.I flashed my credentials and asked directions of a gleeful fellow with a tail.He pointed with his toasting fork.“Thanks,” I said.“Nice horns.” * * * I should have recognized him even here—a tall, shambling man with a stovepipe hat, a bulbous nose and an air of threadbare dignity rather like an undertaker with a skinful.“Sir John, eh?” “Who’s yersel’?” “Ace Letarte.World’s Nicest Reporter.I wonder if I might ask you a few questions.” “Och, aye,” said he without much interest.“Don’t suppose ye have a wee drap aboot ye?I’ve a thirst like a steam roller.” I slipped him my flask ready primed with 12-year-old scotch. He took a blissful pull with his eyes closed, sighed and made the flask disappear.“Aaah,” said he at last.“How’s it topside the noo?” “Your Confederation’s falling apart and the captain of our ship of state doesn't know what to do about it.His latest notion is yet another travelling commission asking the common folk how he should be running the country.” “Leading from behind, eh?” OXFAM “Exactly. And Quebec’s going its own way regardless.” “If we’d let folk run things,” he said, “we’d never have had a country. You have to take Canadians by the ear and drag them along kicking and squealing.” “Politics as the art of leading voters by the nose while making them feel like prize porkers?” “Precisely,” said he, glancing over his shoulder and taking another nip.“Who’s this fella, anyway?” “Brian Mulroney.” “Well, then, there’s your problem, isn’t it?Your average Irishman is a fine sentimental companion on a Saturday night but you wouldn’t want him watching the store over a long weekend.Does he sing?” “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.” “Of course.Haven’t ye any hardheaded Scots left?” “Just one. He’s on the commission.” “Then there’s your answer.Throw out your Irishman and put your Scot in charge.” “Jack Webster for Prime Minister?” “Why not?” “Because he’d tell everybody ‘shut up and don’t be sae bloody daft!’ ” “Sounds good to me.” “Maybe you’ve got something at that,” said I.“Now I need a couple quotes to take back to my editor.” He removed his hat, held it over his breast, leaned on his stick and looked thoughtfully upward as if for inspiration.“Let us be English or let us be French ; but above all, let us be Canadians.” “That’s good,” said I, scribbling away like mad.“Whatever you do, adhere to the Union — we are a great country, and shall become one of the greatest in the Universe if we preserve it; we shall sink into significance and adversity if we suffer it to be broken.” “Thanks,” said I.“Anything else?” “I will let you know tomorrow,” said he, and went back to policing the compound.Compagnie de danse Sursaut DU 8 AU 1 0 IT DU I4a«!7 NOVEMBRE.1990 2W30 mtÀm DU PARC JACQUES-CARTIER SHERBROOKE,(Qué.) those days,” Sherrer mused.5 There is no “A” group or “B” = group, nor a serious tragedy group i and a farce group. The two casts - were divided into Strasbourg Group and Stanislavsky Group — The Method and The System, as Green put it.The personal hell of Jacob’s Ladder LOS ANGELES (AP) — Screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin recently talked about how to turn nighttime dreams into fun and profit.“Jacob’s Ladder came to me as a dream,” he said.“It started with me in the subway — the underworld of New York in a sense. As I left the train and walked along a very deserted platform late at night, I walked up the stairs and found the gate was locked. That has happened to me in real life, but in the dream I just felt that something was wrong.“I walked to the other end of the platform, and that exit was locked as well.I got very frightened and I said, ‘Something terrible is happening.’ I had this feeling that the only way out was down, through the bowels of New York.I felt I would have to go to hell to become free, to get out.” That’s the start of Tim Robbins’s descent into a personal hell in Jacob’s Ladder. It’s a thriller written by Rubin, a hot screenwriter because of Ghost, and directed by Adrian Lyne, also hot because of Fatal Attraction.Robbins is a Vietnam veteran beset with dreams and hallucinations. He learns that his combat buddies have undergone the same bedevilment, and he tries to discover the reason. Two years have passed since Lyne’s sensation-ridden Fatal Attraction. Why the gap?The director said that Jacob’s Ladder started at Paramount Pictures, but fell from favor after a change in regimes. The project shifted to Columbia Pictures.“Also, I worked for a year on the IFAMOUS PLAYERS Prom the director of “Fatal Attraction and the writer of “Ghost comes the most disturbing and unforgettable movie of the vear.in ADRIAN LYNE Film “This play is particularly wonderful for young actors," the director said.“There’s both comedy in it, and tragedy.” The Seagull is about young actors and writers living on a country estate in turn of the century Russia. The audience is drawn to the story by the young people’s courage and heartbreak.“In Chekhov, everybody’s al- ways in love with the wrong person. They’re always anguished, but because they never pay enough attention to each other’s anguish, they keep hurting each other,” Green said.Green said he wanted to direct this play for a long time. His first production at Bishop’s, 15 years ago, was Chekhov’s The Three Sisters.Kirsten Williamson weeps as Masha.special effects aspects of the movie,” he added.“One problem that took a long while was that we did all the special effects incarnera, when we shot, rather than handing over the special effects as a kind of package to a company like ILM (Industrial Light and Magic).RESTAURANT mm ww I *4640 Bourque Blvd.„ Chinese Restaurant the largest buffet table in the Townships Plus.Roast Beef & Shrimps Grill —Opening Specials Noon 1 price .Sunday noon 6.99 Evening Monday - Wednesday .Thursday to Sunday evening Réservations; "When I choreograph, we try = things out together and sometimes = it works, sometimes it doesn't,” ; Châteauvert says.“That’s why when you get used to choreographing with collaborators, it’s all the tougher when they have to leave to take other jobs.” This particular run of Risque d’orages is onstage this weekend, and from Nov.14 to 17.Each of the dancers portrays a character that is either aggressive or discreet.Châteauvert chose for herself the role of an aggressive woman who’s conscious that she dominates. If that means lifting a male partner, so be it.Although the decor is black and bleak, many of the scenes take place in what are supposed to be private places, like the home. The idea is that the dancers will interact with each other in a fashion representing every day life.“People always behave one way in a home situation and another way outside the home,” the choreographer said.“In short, the dance is just the affirmation of self.” Woman from Warden writes town’s history By j Schmidt SHERBROOKE — Eighty-year-old Mary McLaughlin Sicard lives in a house her grandfather built more than 100 years ago.She grew up when people rode penny farthing bicycles, in a village where she could wander in woods and play with mud turtles and blood suckers by the river. She grew up in a time when people in her village hadn’t heard of the word “pollution.” The village she grew up in is Warden in the Eastern Townships.McLaughlin wanted to make sure that her family, friends, and fellow townspeople knew and remembered how their home town started and evolved.Twenty years ago she decided to write a book about Warden. From friends, relatives, and from the Waterloo library, she began gathering bits and pieces of valuable information to add to her own collection of diaries, photos and memories. However, discouraged by an injury, she stopped her research until her son Paul Sicard, a commercial artist, encouraged her to continue the project.McLaughlin’s Warden is the product of Mary McLaughlin's research and amazing memory — and of her son’s talents as a commercial artist. The book traces Warden's evolution from its Loyalist beginnings in 1795.The first settler, Johannes Mock, established the first grist mill in the Townships on the North Branch of the Yamaska River.Rufus Whitcomb later bought the land and mills. He convinced his brother William in New York to join him in Warden, which was then known as Mock's Mills.William Whitcomb almost didn’t make it to Warden, though. At the border, a friend discouraged him by telling him Canada was “a cold barren place where the white birch grew so thick that a hog could not get through the woods.” In the book, Mary McLaughlin describes how Mock’s Mills became Knowlton Falls, and then Warden. She includes descriptions of the town’s tannery and cheese factory, and a list of names and occupations of prominent citizens in 1879.She also includes a record of Warden’s participants in the two world wars. The author writes that the advent of the public school system forced the closure of Warden’s Protestant schoolhouse, which the town eventually converted into four small apartments.Warden’s United Church, built in 1861, was also converted into a private dwelling. She dedicates the book to her parents, James and Carrie McLaughlin, because “they dedicated their lives to the betterment of Warden.Carrie Marston McLaughlin founded the Village Improvement Society. The money she raised by organizing sales and dances helped provide Warden with new sidewalks and street lamps, and with an endowment fund for Warden’s cemetary.James McLaughlin, a carpenter and craftsman, built houses, furniture, sleighs, wagons, and even the reservoir which still services Warden today.McLaughlin’s Warden contains photographs of the town and of its people, including five generations of McLaughlin’s.Mary and Paul McLaughlin, produced 500 copies of the book at her expense. It’s obvious how dear Warden is to her, and her attachment to her home town becomes evident when she says, “I was born here and I hope to die here.” Ici moi/on du cadre ¦ L* plus 9ron«f tmntrm d'art au Quafeac PLANNING TO REDECORATE?Bring us your frame and we will disassemble it FREE > OIL PAINTING > FRAMED REPRODUCTION > ARTIST SUPPLIES • LAMINATION • MADE TO MEASURE FRAMES • NEEDLEPOINT 2626 King St.West (across from Nanking Rest.) annual Seventh Moon poetry readings; Monique Martin, Avrum Malus and Monique Baril-Jones take care of that end of matters. But Jones is, to some, an éminence grise of the event. While others spin around finding sponsors, making sure the microphone system works and tacking publicity posters on every bulletin board in town, Jones looks on with seemingly faint interest. He’s done his bit: he’s chosen one of the two poets who’ll be reading tonight.Jones is a North Hatley poet and scholar who represents much of what the Seventh Moon is all about.“It’s a bit of an old home week for many people,” Jones says.“You never know quite what will happen next.” LEGENDARY EPISODES The 15th annual poetry event has skipped years on occasion, but it’s legendary episodes are seldom forgotten by those who witnessed them. There was the year Irving Layton went on well past his allotted time.Lucien Francoeur was supposed to read next but his wife threatened to storm out.Francoeur then declined to read his poetry; instead, the Québécois poet “rockeur” performed a spectacular tour de force monologue only to be annoyed, when he was finished, that nobody in the audience had tape-recorded it for post- erity.“I remember insulting a guy once when I introduced as a mere ‘prose writer’” Jones says.“And sometimes it gets a little awkward because the bar is so easy to get to, if you know what I mean.” Jones’ recollections of all the Seventh Moons past includes episodes where audience members get into snits over the behavior of their mistresses or lovers.EGOS, MUSIC AND WINE In a room full of artists and egos and music and wine, one wonders how heavily the poetry itself weighs in as an attraction.“To hear exactly the rhythms and hear how the poet goes from line to line is something you can’t get on page,” Jones says.“But most people just go to see what the 4 i poet looks like and sounds like.” Avrum Malus, one of the founders of the Seventh Moon tradition in North Hatley, says the original vision was to get people together during a “dead social season.” “I myself find it a pleasure to hear someone read,” Malus says.“That’s how poetry began, as an oral tradition played to the accompaniment of a lyre.” One of the poets to present his work at tonight’s reading, Michel Garneau, comes from both an oral and a musical tradition.Garneau wrote a great many radio plays for Radio-Canada and CBC, as well as hosted programs. He’s a man with a varied background in the arts, notably in poetry.Garneau also plays a few instruments which he has promised to bring along to the Seventh Moon reading.GEORGE JOHNSTON The other reader tonight is George Jonston who recently published an anthology of his poetry, Endeared by Dark — the Collected Poems.Johnston is a scholar of Icelandic legends; he’s a retired Carleton University professor.“Jonhston is a bit of a showman,” Jones says.“He composes his poems in his head then writes them down when he thinks he’s finished.” Jones says it helps at readings if the reader possesses the ability to perform.Johnston sounds like a man with that ability.“He presents the world around as partly suburban and middle-class so the poems aren't immediately difficult to approach.” For starters.Johnston rhyms “Goggles full" with “McGonicle”.Yet.as Jones points out.he’s a poet of multiple tones.“There’s an elegiac note that gives it some seriousness: how people die and get sick, and so on,” Jones says.“The war is in the background of the early poems and is treated with some distance, but it’s there.” DIFFICULT Jones, a long-time observer of such readings, says certain poems go over with an audience much better than others. Some poetry, especially experimental poetry, is difficult for most people to understand — even when it’s on paper.“Poetry is often like a puzzle on a page,” Jones says.“You struggle to make it sit still on the page.” Jones’ most memorable experience as a poetry lover was in being able to recreate Frank Scott’s speech patterns. The late Frank Scott was an active member of North Hatley’s literary community.“After hearing Frank Scott read a number of times, I found 1 could read it exactly the same way,” Jones says.“Of course, some poets read so badly that it gets too complicated. You might as well just buy the book.” “You get good ones and bad ones and ones you won’t really hear very well,” Jones laughs.Whenever the Seventh Moon is held, it attracts both experts from various academic insitutions who come out of fervent interest in the art, and neophytes with scant knowledge of poetry. The Seventh Moon acts as a bridge between the two poles.BRIDGES SOLITUDES It also bridges the anglophone arts community with the francophone by offering reading in English and French — The Two Solitudes.as the now departed Hugh MacLennan called it.“If someone is new at this and a little wary at first,” says organizer Avrum Malus, “they invariably warm to the surroundings. One way to keep the evening flowing is to limit the length of readings, and schedule a lengthy mingling session in between.“Every year, the Moniques and I worry about attendance and think of ways to get out of organizing the Seventh Moon,” Malus says.“When we do skip a year people keep coming up to us looking dejected and saying ‘How come you didn’t have it this year?’ ” “But while we complain about all the hassles of getting the evening together, we jealously guard the chores,” Malus saysb “because deep down we know how important it is to keep the thing going.” The Seventh Moon will be held in the Tap Room at Hovey Manor in North Hatley, tonight at 8:30 6—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1990 Always be on the lookout for misprints and other flaws I wonder how many people realize that almost every modern Canadian stamp has a flaw or misprint in it, I should say, every issue. It might be a missing item here or a spot there or something or other. So, if you are one that thinks you can get rich overnight through the discovery of one of these little quirks or misprints, forget it.It just won’t happen. However, there’s a great deal of joy in going through a bundle of stamps looking for these little faults.I would like to share my opinion of why our stamps are full of misprints and flaws of one kind or another. The post office was created as a business of carrying dispatches from one point to another, for a fee.The fee was minimal and although the idea was not to make a great deal of money, it was not supposed to lose money either. If we are to believe our government, the post office has always been a money losing proposition. The postage stamp was created not only as a receipt for the fee paid but, but also to let the department know that a fee was paid for the delivery service.Stamp Corner By Peter McCarthy While the printing of stamps is done under a blanket of security similar to that of money, it is quite evident that it is not done under the same degree of precision. Here we enter into cost efficiency: the maximum for the minimum. The quality of the paper is not always the best even though the paper made for postage stamps is not used for anything elese. This is where the greatest degree of security comes into play.In order to be cost efficient, the printers do not seem to place a great deal of importance on precision.A stamp is a LINGERIE FINE The very best selection misprints that has always been a lot of fun to look out for is that of print shifts. These print shifts occurred with consis-tancy in the 1977-78 floral definitives and in particular in the 10 cent Lady Slipper. The stamps were printed on different paper by two different printers. This didn’t seem to make any difference because the shifts showed up from both printers. The question here is, at what point does one consider the shift significant? That depends entirely on the type of research and mounting you wish to do.Oddly enough, most print shifts occur to the left.Sometimes the word “Canada” and the border line around the “western columbine” have shifted significantly to the left.I say significantly because the numeral and the “C” break the sur- rounding white border. This is where the significance of a print shift should begin in this particular series.Print shifts also appear to have happened in the brown portion of the shooting star bud stamp.Closer inspection will once again reveal that it is the border edging and the numeral and the word “Canada” that has shifted.Another great example of a print shift in the “Lady Slipper" is when not only does the numeral and the “C” in Canada break the surrounding white border but, the edging surrounding the flower is also touching the outer beige border. The shift is a full centimetre. The gem is the print shifts of this issue comes from the 12 cent je-welweed.This stamp appeared after the expiration of the 12 cent rate; therefore, it did not have as great a run as the other denominations of the series. The stamp shows a minute downward print shift on this denomination. But the print shifts don’t stop with the floral definitives. The “Cameo Queens" which appear at this time also have significant print shifts. They occur again in the numerals, the word “Canada” and in the matching colours of the face. They create quite a distortion of the Queen’s face. One of my favourite modern stamps is the 1967 flag and map stamp issued in January of that year to celebrate one hundred years of Confederation. The fact is that it is easier to find a print shift in this stamp than it is to find a well printed copy.A well printed copy has the flag staff running along the border between the Yukon and Alaska Next time you are in a stamp store or, for that matter, if you should happen to have a large amount of this stamp, go through them and see what I mean. You can find print shifts as much as two centimetres eighter way.Of course, it’s not just the flag staff that has shifted, it’s the whole of the red printing. That’s just the easiest way to locate the shift.Print shifts are an interesting facet of the hobby.Looking for them also helps in looking for other quirks and misprints that appear in stamps. Thanks goodness the post office contract printers are not as precise as we would otherwise like to believe they are.It certainly adds to the hobby.Cat contest purrrrrs along nicely Continued from page 2 elderly father found her on the woodpile at the side of the house — half frozen. She had been attacked by the Alaska Husky next door who had got loose from his chain the night we discovered Puff missing.” Rout goes on to describe some of the Tender-Loving-Care that helped Puff recover, good as new.The amazing thing about Puff is she lived a hearty 21 years with the Routs.Mrs.Evans awarded an honorable mention to Alice M.Mitchell, who wrote a piece called “Has Any- body Seen Mildred?” Mitchell has some great-grandsons she’s eager to read some cat tales to.Her story goes something like this: Two cat in West Brome get along just fine.Caribel, who was considered the smarter of the two, was an aristocratic pussycat.Mildred, the sleek black cat, was Siamese. They hunted together, snuggled together.“One day as Mildred was walking on the driveway, two large dogs appeared and started to molest her.Not daring to interfere, the daughter at the house called the police who managed to save Mildred from her attackers.Mildred did not seem to be injured but was taken to the vet’s, and after spending the night there, returned home apparently none the worse for the ordeal.” “On Halloween there was always a She started after the deer.As she was chasing the deer, it suddenly stopped, turned around and started after Claribel — almost as if it said to itself ‘Why am I running after you?I’m bigger than you are.’” Mitchell then writes of the sad parting of the two cats when their owners move to Europe.Claribel is put to sleep, and Mildred is found a home in Bondville, but she runs away.“Claribel’s fate is known. But has anybody seen Mildred?Hopefully someone found her, realized she was a stray, and has given her a kind and loving home.” Thanks to everyone who entered the contest. For those who wanted to know Myrtle Gallup's address so they could order the book from her, here it is : 50 Goodenough Rd.W R.R.3 Danville, Qc.JOA 1A0 (839-2663) Le jardin des lys Residence for retired people rooms — suites apartments (2V3, 3V2, 4V2) ¦¦ DES LYS We con accommodate convalescent people and those requiring a short stay.• dining room • central elevator • beauty salon • community center • laundry room • interior dépanneur • chapel • banking service • bus service • maid service • parking • garden path 1150 Quatre-Saisons (near Galeries Quatre-Saisons) 822-103? TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1990—7 Hemingway biography not as good as the others Less Than A Treason: Hemingway in Paris by Peter Griffin (OXFORD): $23.95, 197 pp.Continuing his segmented approach to a fresh Hemingway biography, Peter Griffin follows his well-received Along With Youth with a second volume of the writer's life which examines the Paris years.Despite continuing access to material unavailable to other Hemingway biographers such as Carlos Baker, Jeffrey Myers or Kenneth Lynn, Griffin’s slender examination of the years from December 1921 to New Year’s Day 1927 remains somewhat disappointing.Particularly when Griffin’s treatment of the expatriot Paris years of Hemingway’s life is compared to the colorful, eminently readable Hemingway: The Paris Years by Michael Reynolds, does this spare, monotone portrait pale.Griffin’s choice of telling Hemingway’s story from within the writer’s consciousness is unfortunate; as he says, “I do not analyze this well-examined life; I try instead to recreate it”.Guided by Hemingway’s own credo put forth in Death In The Afternoon, “that the function of art is to ‘Make all that come true again’ ”.Griffin attempts to take us into the mind of his subject with mixed success. His story has none of the nagging intrusion of Reynolds’s chiding of Hemingway for his braggadocio and haughty disdain Kaleidoscope By Richard Loney for the amateur, but neither is it filled with the kind of wonderful incidental detail found in the writer both of these biographers owe so much.Baker’s monumental study of Hemingway’s life looms larger and larger as each new successor tries duplicating what the Princeton professor achieved in 1969.Griffin covers the seminal events in Hemingway’s life in Europe with a brisk, smooth-flowing narrative, beginning with his arrival with his young wife Hadley on the cruiseship Leopoldina at Le Have in the fading days of 1921.Their arrival in Paris, establishment of domestic housekeeping at 74 Rue du Cardinal Lemoine, and Hemingway’s determination to follow up on formal introductions provided by fellow writer Sherwood Anderson, occupy the early pages of Griffin’s book. The brash Chicagoan makes the acquaintance of Ezra Pound and James Joyce, and establishes connections with a circle that included Sylvia Beach of Shakespeare’s bookshop, Ford Madox Ford, and Hemingway’s later nemesis Gertrude Stein The trips to other European venues whereby Hemingway continued writing for the Toronto Star, and his gradual realization that journalism was an ephemeral trade that distracted him from his dream of writing fiction, lead into Griffin’s treatment of Hemingway’s methods of composing stores. These earliest attempts at creativity can more readily be appreciated in Hemingway’s own autobiographical memoir, A Moveable Feast. The gradual disintegration of his first marriage to Hadley Richardson, brought on by the intrusion of a wife’s best friend, Pauline Pfeiffer, leads Griffin to speculate about the recent publication of Hemingway’s lost work The Garden of Eden.Griffin claims this novel, suppressed by Hemingway himself, may be based on a ménage à trois which developed in the years following the birth of John Hadley Nicanor Hemingway, the baby they called "Bumby”.While these questions about Hemingway’s sexual basons remain speculative at best, there is no confusing his feelings about homosexuality, which were established in these years.Known for his brutal macho attacks on homosexuals who dared challenge his manliness, Hemingway, according to Griffin, could prove that the pen was mightier than the sword.“Ernest found homosexuals disgusting. He wouldn’t write about them, he said, because they were unpredictable.Given certain and usually unavoidable circumstances, the would act according to their perversion. One of their characteristics, Ernest believed, was the tendency to overreact or, better, to misreact, because their emotions were somehow short-circuited.Usually afraid to let their geniune feelings show, they would either amplify or suppress their response — keeping up a static of excitement, or affecting ennui — in order to hide themselves. In speed and writing, everything for them had to be more, or less, that it was”.Aside from offering a few other shrewd insights into Hemingway’s formative years, Peter Griffin’s book will remain a primer for those who wish to relive the Paris years. Those who wish to savor the full effects of Paris on the developing writer will still happily turn to Carlos Baker’s enduring portrait, or Michael Reynolds’ more recent addition to the vast mill of Hemingway biographies. The Replacements overshadowed by their lead vocalist RECORDS REVIEWED The Replacements All Shook Down (SIRE - REPRISE — WEA) The knock on the current release by The Replacements is that the band has just become a front for the songwriting of Paul Wester-berg; well, that amounts to saying that the Beatles were just a musical sounding board for the ideas of Lennon & McCartney. All Shook Down may have moved away from a group concept to feature Westerberg’s quirky voice on most of the catchy tracks, but there is a solid band chugging behind tracks like “On Wink At A Time”, or “Bent Out Of Shape”, which have a Rolling Stones edge.Insistent guitar figures shaded in all over this album use distortion and string-bending with artful discretion.adding to the gritty, garage-band style that The 'Mats, as they are affectionately called, have long been noted for.Certain songs like the infectious “Nobody” bring Westerberg’s vocals into stark contrast with the carefully balanced rhythm tracks, supplied by a host of studio musicians including John Cale, Steve Berlin and Benmont Tench, among the more notable presences. Most memorable of Westerberg’s songs is the softly understated delivery on “Sadly Beautiful”, a Dylanes-que ballad that recalls songs like “She Belongs To Me”.Adding to the melancholy are the freight-train wails of soft steel guitar and some lower-string bowing of a mournful violin, which augment the ubiquitous guitar arrangements with refreshing variety. The title track, a play on Elvis’s “All Shook Up”, is most unlike the other songs. With its breathy, stoned reading of some lines over a flute, guitar and accordion, it sounds like an early Lou Reed out-take.In fact it pales when compared with the following track, “Attitude”, about a guy coming to the reality that his social actions have earmarked him as having an “attitude”.This attitude, a Mick Jagger kind of strut, comes across on the raucous tune “My Little Problem”, with its big back beat and jolting guitar bridge. With such a concentration on Westerberg’s talents as revealed on All Shook Down, it will be interesting to see what configuration will result when the resounding success of this hottest College Chart recording inspires the inevitable tour.Only then will we see what kind of replacements have made it into The Replacements to accompany Paul Westerberg on his quirky musical journey.?Roseanne Cash Interiors (COLUMBIA) Her daddy may have sung bass and her mama tenor, but Johnny Cash’s most successful child has never felt confined to pursue her career along strict country lines.Married to one of country’s most distinctive male singers, Rodney Crowell, Roseanne Cash has expressed herself in the same genre quite well with hits like “Runaway Train”, penned by ex-Kingston Trio folkie John Stewart, and nine other number-one singles.Cash has also crossed over into pop with a top 20 hit.scored three number one albums, a Grammy Award, and a prestigious BMI Songwriter’s Award. On Interiors, her first studio project in more than three years, she plys her songwriting talents on ten tunes she either wrote herself, or collaborated on.“Dance With The Tiger”, again with Stewart, is one of the standout tracks, as is “Real Woman”, co-written with her usual producer, hubby Crowell.Several songs hint at themes the album title introduces : “On The Inside” kicks off with a veiled suggestion of what is to come: “On The Surface” begins with the lines : “On the surface everything seems right/ No one notices the dimness of the light/ For the world outside our door our smiles are oh so bright/ On the surface everything’s all right”.“Real Woman” continues the theme, making a plea for the female speaker to be understood on her own merits as a real woman, not as “a star.to be admired.to fake my smile”, but “to be a real woman.Changing every day.real in every way”.Some songs move distinctly away from introspection, such as the emotional “This World”, which takes for its subject the sad plight of abused children.Profits from this song will be distributed to the Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, and Earth Communications Office in Nashville, making Cash’s commitment as monetary as it is creative. With her memorable voice, which carries great emotional baggage on these heartfelt songs, Roseanne Cash has found that songwriting and production control can achieve what she has relied on others for in her ten-year career. With Interiors she firmly established herself as a singer with a commanding vocal presence and the ability to craft compelling and poignant songs.Look for Roseanne Cash on just about any radio station from pure country all the way over to adult contemporary, and expect that “Real Woman” or “I Want A Cure” could be breakout singles.IDTEfflOffi Brit 8—TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1990 TRAVEL Florida holidays are cheaper when you go by car ** • A • ¦ ± M9 >.* » * « • « « • > • * • • * k?* • *»?* • A » ?Taking the kids down South is expensive. That's why many families chose to drive instead of fly.By Felicity Munn CP Travel Writer Holidaying in the sun is an annual winter rite for many Canadians and they won’t necessarily give it up even in a recession. But sunseekers are bound to be more cost-conscious this winter. For many, that may mean heading south by car.Even with the climb in U.S.gasoline prices since the Persian Gulf crisis, driving is an economical way to go for families.“It’s a lot cheaper once you get into the States where they don't tax your gasoline one tax on top of another on top of another,” said David Leonhardt, spokesman for the national office of the Canadian Automobile Association.“Most prices, including hotel prices, are somewhat less below the border,” added Leonhardt.MORE TO FLORIDA “Florida is an inexpensive trip for a lot of families if they do it by car,” agreed David Redekop, director of the Tourism Research Institute of Canada. The institute, a branch of the Conference Board of Canada, regularly surveys Canadians' travel intentions. The most recent sampling indicated 47 per cent of respondents planned a winter vacation, down slightly from a year earlier. But the survey also found that nearly one in four of those planning a holiday intended to visit Florida, up from 17 per cent last year. That may be because Florida is viewed as a reasonably priced destination, particularly with a strong Canadian dollar. But part of it, Redekop adds, may be that it can be reached by car.“You drive there in one or two nights (from Central Canada) and stay in relatively inexpensive motels. There’s no air fare and gas is still less expensive in the United States.” BUDGETING COST The American Automobile Association publishes annually a suggested average budget for people vacationing by car in the United States. The AAA calculated this year that a family of two adults and two children should budget an average of $173 US a day for food and lodging. The report, published five weeks before the Persian Gulf crisis began on Aug.2, also suggested budgeting $25 US for every 300 miles — roughly 500 kilometres — of driving, including allowances for tire wear, oil and maintenance. That, of course, has since changed. The AAA’s Geoff Sundstrom said in a telephone interview from Orlando, Fla., that as of the third week of October, the average price of gas in the United States had risen by about 30.5 cents US to $1.38 US a gallon. So the estimated cost of gas and car expenses should be increased by about one-third.That brings the recommended budget for a family of four to $173 US daily for food and lodging plus about $33 US for every 500 kilometres of driving.“But the price for operating a vehicle is still relatively low,” Sundstrom added.“It’s still less than 10 per cent of vacation costs, which isn’t the case with air fare, especially when there are four people.” DRIVE OR FLY?However, factoring in accommodation and food expenses for a family for a two-night drive to Florida, for example, actually makes it just about as expensive as flying at discount fares. The AAA recommends families budget a daily average of $93 US for meals and $80 US for lodging, a figure that includes a $5 US charge for each child sharing the same room as the two adults. Thus, it would cost a family of four $990 US, or about $1,150 Cdn, to make the 2,250-kilometre drive to Florida from Central Canada and return, spending two nights on the road each way.The cheapest return air fares for a family of four to Florida from Central Canada in January would also total about $1,150, including taxes. However, availability of the lowest fares is limited and they sell out quickly.Driving also saves on car rental at the destination. In Florida, the AAA report said, the average lodging was $87.86 US and the average for meals $91.56 US a day.In California, it was $84.28 US for accommodation and $105.32 US for meals. It notes food costs can be reduced by having the main meal at midday to take advantage of lower lunch prices, by picnicking, or by eating dinner at restaurants offering “early-bird” specials. For the record, a CAA report, also issued in June, said a family of four vacationing by car in Canada should budget an average of $179.50 daily for food and lodging plus $40.75 for each 500 kilometres of driving. That was before gas prices in Canada began rising. Then, of course, there’s the proposed goods and services tax, scheduled to take effect on Jan.1, that will add seven per cent to virtually all prices in Canada.“Surely ‘unspoiled Caribbean’ is a contradiction in terms” By Felicity Munn Though it sometimes seems otherwise, the tentacles of mass tourism haven’t yet reached everywhere in the world. There are still places untarnished by highrise hotels and prices to match, and vendors hawking everything from sex to souvenirs. But in the Caribbean, that annual winter mecca for tens of thousands of sun-starved North Americans?Surely “unspoiled Caribbean” is a contradiction in terms. Not so, argues Burl Willes, author of a guidebook called Undiscovered Islands of the Caribbean. The Caribbean, Willes notes, is made up of thousands of islands, from the well-known tourist spots to barren, uninhabited cays.It is the islands in between he concentrates on.“Dozens of secluded islands with friendly populations await the adventurous traveller,” he says. They range fnyn small cays — pronounced keys — off Belize and Venezuela to clusters of islands in the French West Indies, the Bahamas and the Grenadines. But by writing a guide to unspoiled islands, won’t he help spoil them in the end?Willes responds that most were selected because they are not especially vulnerable to rapid commercialization. In fact, he warns that perfect plumbing, air-conditioning, TV and even electricity, in some cases, may be unavailable. And these islands require extra effort to reach, whether by boat or island-hopping plane from the nearest large island.FOR INTREPID “The kind of traveller who goes to these offbeat places is the adventuresome traveller,” Willes said in a telephone interview from his home in Berkeley, Calif.“So there are not going to be that many going.” Willes also noted that the local population tends to leave because there are no jobs, “but when a few more tourists come in it provides jobs and income for the island.” Willes says all 37 islands cited in the book have quiet, unhurried life-syles and breathtaking, often empty beaches. Most also have reasonably priced accommodation.Isla Mujeres, within easy ferry access of the mega-commercial resort of Cancun on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, may be the best-known of the islands in the guide, first published in 1988 with an expanded second edition out this fall.VISITORS APPROVE Willes considered dropping Isla Mujeres from the second edition, but didn’t because it garnered so many favorable comments from readers and friends. The two most isolated islands, Willes says, are Long Cay and North East Cay, off Belize.Belize, formerly British Honduras, lies just south of Mexico and is a trendy new sun destination for North American travellers. All seven inhabited islands in the Turks and Caicos chain are also in- cluded. The Turks and Caicos, renowned for their snorkelling and diving, are not always cheap.Providen-ciales, the most developed for tourists, has some pricey resorts, but the other islands are less developed and less expensive.Likewise, the six islands off Belize featured in the book range from Ambergris Cay, which has a few luxury hotels, to Long Cay and North East Cay, where there are a few rustic cabins, complete with kerosene stoves, lanterns and outhouses, that cost $25 US a night for two people.MORE CHOICES Other islands featured include: • Green Turtle Cay, Long Island and the Exumas, all in the Bahamas.• Vieques and Culebra in Puerto Rico.• Saba, Barbuda and Montserrat in the Leeward Islands.• Marie-Galante, Terre-de-Haut and Terre-de-Bas in the French West Indies.• Carriacou, Petit Martinique, Union Island, Mayreau and Ca-nouan in the Grenadines.• Isla de Coche and Isla de Cuba-gua off Venezuela.• Isla Holbox in the West Caribbean.• Little Cayman and Cayman Brae in the Cayman Islands.• Anegada, Jost Van Dyke and Guana Island in the British Virgin Islands. For each, Willes provides a brief overview, followed by sections on where to stay, where to eat and how to get there.A similar guide to undiscovered islands of the Mediterranean, by Willes and Linda Lancoine-Moyer, has just been published.Willes next plans a book on the undiscovered islands along the Pacific coast of North America.Undiscovered Islands of the Caribbean, by Burl Willes.Published by John Muir Publications, distributed by Raincoast Books; 252 pages; $19.50.
