presented by Professor Laird, who expressed the opinion that the completion of the work of raising the four hundred thousand dollar endowment could be brought about by the end of the year.The report was adopted.On the temperance question the report of the moral and social reform committee, regarding local veto and abolition of bars were promptly accepted, but much opposition was expressed towards the elimination of the element of private gain.which was described as not sane.Discussion occupied about two hours and resulted in the adoption of the report by large majority.Rev.W.M.Rochester then raised the question of the connection of the Assembly's committee with the Canadian Social and Moral Reform Council without the Assembly having clear knowledge of its policy and constitution.He moved that the portion of the report dealing with that be remitted to a committee for a further report at the next assembly.The motion was voted down after which some rout'n: business was trgnsacted Including the passing of the ommendations of the Lord's Day Observance committee and those of the committee on systematic giving.“The relations at present existing between Queens University and races.Twigs has been credited with working a mile in 1.43 1-5 over this track, which will beat most of the others.On this alone he must be called.Gold Heart is another to be dealt with, this one has run some fast races, and in one or two of them has been knocking at the door.Cruche D'Or.from the Beagram string ran well her last time out, and will be In the money this afternoon.The fourth race is broken on account af the heavy play on some of the races.A big public killing was made on the Gibson Handicap over seven furiongs.There were seven herses in the race, Polly Prim being the 7 to 10 favorite gnd played by the big bettors but St.Jeanne, the medium of many a coup, was backed most liberally to win by the talent.The books believing that St.Jeanne had no chance against Polly Prim: let the price stay at 15 to 1 with the result that they lost thousands of dollars on the race.It crippled some of the books entirely and they had to Lorrow enough money to continue In the game.St.Jeanne got away well and led all the way, never being bothered.Polly Prim was second and had to fight for the place from Raleigh.Hawkama was called to show.but was left In the ruck.There were 14 starters in the first race, the five and a half furipngs for maidens.Col.Faverdale and E.8S, Whitaker were well fancied, both being at very short prices.Col.Faverdale won in a rather close finish.The field straggled out pretty well.The two-year-old race over four furlongs brought out so many starters that it was decided to make two races of it.The first saw a rather motley collection of youngsters go to the post.Brown Tony, in W.H.Mosby's string.romped home, leaving Bridoon and Plaudmore to fight it out for the place.There was nut a great deal of interest in this race.The Walker Cup Steeplechase was notable by the decisive defeat of Spencer Reiff, the heavily played favorite.Picktime did the trick under an excellent rid® by winning as he pleased.Bilberry made the race from the start until he had negotiated about eleven jumps when he stumbled, shaking the saddle loose.He was gallantly re-mounted, byt, at the next jump stopped for good.Frank Somers got lost half way around, leaving Picktime, Spencer Reiff and Butter Ladle to fight it out.Spencer died on the stretch run and Butter Ladle had no difficulty what ever In passing him and getting the place money.Frank Somers had won the cup both times before, but is not yet on edge.The maiden two-year-old race late in the afternoon, the other half of the big entry raes, went to Lystra, a rank outsider, but a filly that was full of running.There was a heavy play on Peacock's Choice, which won Wednesday, and on Arthur Bryan and J.W.Kent.The odds-on favorite, Dorothy Webb, was never in the running, being crowded back at the ntart.Speight, called by many handieappers, failed when called on in the stretch.Lystra was played by a few on the Inside, but the taleat was badly beaten on the race as a whole.; The pickers had a hard job ahead of them in the three-year-old selling race over a mile course.This race went to Galdnote, which has won frequently at Toronto, but Reatoration.Solanshingie, St.Valentine, Ballot Box and Hiacke were regarded as dangerous contenders.Restoration was backed down from 8 to 1.to 3 to 1, but is a little short yet.Goldnote was and 4 te, 1, while Hiacko wns quoted on the boards .Dele- strome looked to be good hut faded away and Goldnote won without being pushed by three lengths.Hiacko got the place by a neck.The last race a mile and an eighth on the turf went to Milistone, which made a strong finish second to Sir Galahad on Wednesday.True Boy.was the heavily piayed favorite but was never in the going.A 'SUN DANCE IS HELD.Thousand Indians Take Part With the Sanction of Rats.” n appears that rats are not only disagreeable and disgusting Wile bessts.but actually a foe to human- ty.Dr.A.Calmette devotes An article in the Revue de Mois (Paris) to & very learned, very amusing and at the same time very alarming study of rats.“Let us declare war on rata!” says he, while pointing out the stre- measures we must take.he rate are on the way to conquering the world And this invader is not the old rat, known to the remotest antiquity and against which dogs, cats, hogs and owis waged a (fairly successful warfare; it is not the mus rattus, town rat or country rat, rather & nuisance than a curse; bo, the new conqueror is the mus decumanus, or_to give him his least flattering name_the sewer rat His history runs back no great distance through the ages, He is first mentioned in 1620.He then inhabited India and Persia.But he invaded dia was ravaged by famine ant all Central Asia was shakén by quakes: the rat found the roglon no longer agreeable, and set forth to seek a more attractive country.The close- packed army of these rodents crossed the Volga near Astrakan: they invaded southern and eastern Prussia in 1750 Three years later aixteen thousand of them were destmyed; vet the survivors increased and multl- plied.The zoologist Bell mentions that when thé French Government wanted to move the Maofaucon héheyard away protests were forthcoming because of a fear that the rats that infested it would do mischief éisewhere Thirty.five dead horses were thrown there every day, riore or less; on the morrow.only skeletons remained.A little later the sewer rat conquered Sweden and Norway: it seems that he doesn't mind the cold, for he ia found on the northernmost shores of those countries.Jutland was long protected against invasion by an arm of the sea, but one autumn night in 1847 some fishers were on the Lim£- Jord; auddenly thelr boats were surrounded by an incredible number of rats, hravely swimming northward The army landed on the peninsula of Thy.chased out the nid black rat, and established themselves there.Then the sewer rat founded colon- tes itn America.About 1865 he was seen along the coast, at the mouths of rivers, no doubt he got there by boat In 1370 he had not yet attacked the upper Missouri.but in 1900 he was everywhere, his invasion being checked only by the Arctic Ice.Destroyed All Verdure.At present he continues his ravages in the West Indies.the Azores, and the Cape Verde Islands, where he assalls the plantations of coffee, bananas.sugar-cane and oranges.In northeastern England, in the estuary of the Humber, there is a large island which fifteen years ago afforded pasturage for three thousand head of cattle; now it belongs to the rats; they have devastated it so completely that a rabbit couldn't getema livin there.“You can hardly step witho setting foot on a rat's nest.” says Dr.Caimette.‘There is no longer any trace of verdure.The rats are gnawing the roots of plants; if they didn't know how to swim they would soon starve.[Efforts have been made to drown them by flooding the low parts of the island.but they fled to higher ground and waited for the water to subside so that they could get back to thetr homes.” the Bolingues Island in the Channel they have occupied wild region where grew only lichens, moss and sparse ferngrasse.What do they Tedd on?‘A man one day took it into his head to Aig up the :at nests alon a stream and was surprised to fin sixteen crabs In a single hole and six in another.They were all large and they had not come there of their own accord, for their legs had all been nipped off.Apparently the rats go hunting at low tide; they carry home crabs and deprive them of their means of locomotion so as to make them de- fencelers.All the crabs were alive, and wiggled what was left of their legs quite frantically.The rats no doubt intended to eat them, and their larder was well filled.” Prodigious conquerors.They not only know how to gain victories but how to profit by them.The history of these hordes resembles that of the Huns and the Mongois and awakens memories of those great radical migrations that have transformed the surface of the earth.There are At- tilas and QGengis-Khans among there rodents, extraordinary hordes of multitudes; there are also organizers, administrators.and engineers! A Good Traveller.The sewer rat is not afraid of the sea and makes a voyage willingly.'n he sees a fine vessel In port he studies her; and if she looks safe end seems well provisioned.from his point of view, he gets aboard.Under cover of darkness he climbs her meor- ing chains and selects a berth.He is prudence ' itself; besides, he knows ships; witness the following anecdote, which comes from New York: “A malling vessel was lifting anchor, preparatory to setting out for Eng- and: all at once the rats on board to leave her in such swarms that the sailors atepped their work to let them go by.They were de- lishted to be rid of that annoying portion of their cargo, and as the rata were making for the wharves and mear-by vessels, they were in no mind te check thelr exodus.Finally they raised the sails.A few days later it became evident that their craft was aking.The cargo was light, so the vessels remained afloat, though the bridge was under water and the crew perished of hunger and thirst.Only the cabin-boy lived to tell the story." Dr, Calmette is not inclined to rely too absolutely upon the narrative of a single boy.and he takes this story with a grain of salt.Then he sells another, which he trusts more implicitly: ‘On the 3ist of August, 1896, fire broke out in some grain stores où fhe Thames bank in - don.People on the river barged re- a curious movement in the water.Looking closer they made out ‘an enormous number of rats.who had been disiodged by the fire and hd threwn themselves into the river.They swam judiciously, but fortu- Dpsely ‘could find no landing place were all drowned.” Losses Occasioned by Rats.: Dr.Calmette js not want! in à degree of indulgence toward these sewer rats; he recognizes their right to Nve upon our planet; but he thinks they have somewhat overdone the matter.Every year the havoc wreught by rats in the cargoes of ships, on docks, In shops and grain stores, and upon plantations of cereals, opffee, sugar-cans and beets, reaches many millions of dollars in every civilized country, Their diet is extremety var- fed; while they like grain, roots, young shoots, the bark of trees, and the carcasses of animals, they also have a heen appetite for fresh owl, pigeon and duck, which they catch alive and sisughter without blinking.They rout birds out of thelr nests.They have even attacked sleeping children and old people.“B.Nielson, his on the fauna of fcandi- (1847) tells how an old man unfer a haystack whose | and Europe in 1727.and this is how: In- | * how, twe days later, his skeleton was found, with only tatters of his clothes to identify | Several yedrs ago rats laid siege to the Hospital of La Pitle, in Paris, and the famous surgeon Terrier wrote: ‘“They are perfectly at home here highly respected hy the director of this ancient hospital The sdminis- tration takes nu notice of them.These antmals continue tu destroy floors, gnaw lead pipes and open water con- dults; hence sudden inundations ne- cesaitating constant repairs.The rat, hospitalised at La Pitle, seems to have acquired veritahle rights of asylum.” Some statistics.By means of careful experiment it is estimated that a rat turned loose upon a carge of grain, meal, bacon, cheese, and tallow consumes nearly two cents’ worth a day_‘to say nothing of what he wastes!” On land the sewers apd rubbish heaps furnish the rascal with a part of his board, so the loss is less serious Nevertheless, the Danes estimate that each of their rats costs them half u cent a day Expensive, | Then you think how little fun they earth- | get owt of him! Disseminators of Disease.In a great city 100,000 rats dally devour property worth $280 This amounts to a loss of $102,200 a year.Nor is that ail, Dr.Calmette tells us that rats threaten our lives.“They infact us with the most serious of their contagious maladies and spread them far and wide.Recently we have learned to our cost the capital role played bv rats in the diffusion of the plague throughout the world.In 1898 Dr.Simond, the Pasteur Institute's commissioner at Bombay, found that they could contract a chronic form of the disease.live on, and impart | to man, whe would die of it.Sev scientists have verified this discovery.‘ It is of etxreme importance since it shows us that even when the malady appears to have totally vanished from a previously infected district, it persista In a latent state among rodents, and that at any time a fresh epidemic may break out.It ts to Simond that we owe our exact knowledge that the most frequent method of the transfer of the direase from the rat to man is that afforded by the flea.It was formerly asserted that the flea that bites rats was of a different spe- cles from the flea that bites people.The question ts now settled and all scientists are agreed that the flea which is common to rats, dogs, cats and human beings is really the ordinary, If not the only, intermediary in the passage of the plague virus from rat to rat.or from rat to man, or from one human being to another.” AN this le horrible, disgusting, hu- millating.but it 1s not the whole story.Rata infect us with trichine- sts.They don't inind it themselves, But pigs eat dead rats -nd we eat pork.Moreover, rats spread \\influenza, aphthold fever.and hydrophobia.A young Greek girl near Smyrna was bitten by a mouse; she had hydrophobia in consequence Now.a rat reaches maturity four months and the mother Tt.tha three broods of little ones a yeas, hind each brood numbers from wx to twelve.Let us call the avertge eight.In two years a pair of rats may endow the world with 1536 new rodents.Such figures need ne commentary.And Dr.Calmette ts quite right tn urging his contemporaries to destroy these wicked beasts.There is no time to : pretty soon we shall all be rat-bitten.THE CARD FOR SATURDAY’S RACES AT-'BLUE BONNETS Blue Bonnets Track, June 13.—The following is the programme for 8a- turday.June 13th.The card consists of seveny races with the Mount Royal Handicap and Prince ales &Steeplec w First rae, for three-year-olds and upwards: selling, by subscription of $6 each, with $406 added, of which 360 to the second and $40 to the third.The winner to be sel at auction for 31,000.If for less, 3'ibs.allowed for each 3100 down to $400.Seven furlongs.a The Prince of Wales Stédplechase guaranteed value 81.000.Second: HE The Prince of Wales atomes a handicap for four-year-olds and Upwards, guaranteed value $1,000 of which $300 to the second and $100 to the third.$10 to accompany the nomination, 815 addition to start, about two miles and a half.Third race, for two-year-olds;
