to the effect that renresen- tativesz of Stanford estate practiondly offered monetary inducements to local physicians to change their opinion that strychnine caused the death of Mrs.Stanford.It is alleged that the bill of $130 of Doctor C.B.Wood, who performed the autopsy on the body of Mrs.Stanford, has been refused payment by the estite on the ground that terirtorinl authorities should have performed the autopsy.Dr.Wood declared that he was empioyed in behalf of the estate by Dr.Humphries and the latter said that he considered the refusal to pay Dr.Wood to be amazing, ae he considered the employment of a private autopsy physician to be proper.A newspaper.in its story of the matter.says that in different views, a representative of the estate indicated to the physicians that 1t would be satisfactory to the estate if they could revise their findings of poisoning, and In such event thelr bills were not to be questioned, and Doctors Humphries, Day and Wood, would be paid the amount TO DEFEAT TOM SULLIVAN Special to The Montreal Star.Toronto, Ont.August 24.—In a race of which the first half sparkled with keen interest, but whlch deteriorated Into a procession on the return journey.Edward Durnan, of Toronto, defeated ‘Tom’ Sullivan, of London, England, on Toronto Bay yesterday afternoon, on a three mile race with a turn for 31,000 à side and the eculling championship of Amerlea.Thousands of persons witnessed the race from points of vantage on the teland and the water front, while bouts of all descriptions lined both sides of the course, which was from Hanlan's Point to Ward's, a distance of one mile and a half and return. The water was perfect.as what little wind there was came from the southeast and hardly ruffled the water. The start was to have been made at 6.10, hut owing to difficulty in clearing the course, it was not until 6.47 that Starter Pearson was able to get his men off.Durnan romped away fram his buoy like a quarter horse, pulling 36 strokes to the minute, while Sulllvan pullel DURNAN ASSUMED LEAD.Durnan soon assumed a slight lead, which increased to almost a length, as the scullers approached the Me- feree's boat. Here, in response to nn ‘encouraging wave of the hand from his wife.Sullivan dug his oara into the water with greater force and more speed, and his shell forged tn the front. It was so quickly done that Durnan was plainly disconcerted, Ife missed a stroke with his left oar, and he kept watching his opponent.Rul- livan's style was by no means an finished as Durnan'a, but he plugged away In a manner that kept hix boat moving at a fast rate, and Increased somewhat his lead, which.at the R.C.Y.C.club house was fully a length.Sullivan had not steered a straight course and his shell was well over In Durnan's water, and “Pat.” Mulqueen called the Referee's attention to the possibility of a foul.Still keeping his stroke to 34, Sullivan malntained his lead, but Durnan spurted within 200 yagds of the turning buoys and reduced Sullivan's advantage to a half length.Durnan was the first to look around and locate the buoys, for which he was steering struight, Sullivan, on the other hand, waa still oul of hia water The men struck their buoys at the sume time.Durnan made à bowutifui turn, but Sullivan made n meas of it, and the Torunto svculler started on the homeward journey with n length leud. With the wind in his favor, and in front of his opponent Durnan fairly nude his shell leap through the water.SULLIVAN ROWED OUT.Sullivan appeared to be rowed out.His stroke lacked power and fell to 26, to the minute. He looked around and waw Durnan now four lengthy ahead. From thia point to the finirh it was a procession.Sullivan had shot htm, boit. The pave to (he tuning buoye had told its laie. His powers were exhausted and he was no longer able to give battle to his younger and more vigorous opponent.Duman improved his lead as he pleased, and a half mile from the fin- hands to his friends on the referee boat. Then he grasped his cars again and continued on his victorious way to the fintsh line, fifteen or twenty lengths in front of Sullivan, who labored peinfully to the end.The of- fidlal time was given as 20.05 4-5, There was conaiderable betting on the result of the race.In some instances =itght odds were given on Bul- livan.Sullivan has no excuse to offer for his defeat, which he accepted | philosophically.Durnan announced | last night that he would immediately challenge Stansbury for the world's championship.Sullivan’s Friends Disappolnted, (Canadian Associated Press.) London, August 24.—Tom Sullivan's Putney friends are greatly disappointed at his failure to defeat Eddie Dur- nan at Toronto yesterday for the sculling championship of America.CANADIAN AMATEUR ATHLETIC UNION MEETING WILL BE IMPORIANT The next annual meeting of the Canadian Amateur Athletic Union, which will take place on the 16th Sept~ ember next, promises to be & most important one.A large number of important propositions wil be brought before the meeting. The question of Lacrosse amateurs playing against professionals will no doubt come up again.‘The question of the reinstatement of Dade and Finlayson will be discussed. The question of sending a Canadian team to the Olympic games in Greece ts another thing that will be talked measures that will come In for their | share of attention. The regular Canadlan Championship Meet will be held on the Montreal Am- {ateur Athletic Association Grounds, | and prormmises to be as much of à sue peus as any that have been held thus a1.| Already President Gorman of the Canadian Amateur Athletic Unfon has !
