(Exodus xxii 18) 5.Adultery (Leviticus xx 10) 6.Homosexuality (Leviticus xx 11, 14,16)7, Any kind of idolatry (Leviticus xx 2) 8.Lying (Deut, xix 16, 19) The list could go on, :.ut I doubt if many readers of Le Soleil are sufficiently devout to relish more Bible reading.I would also like to point out to Mrs.Groeneveld that the Almighty didn’t aiways decree hanging as the way to carry out the sentence.Among the other methods He favoured were burning, death by the sword or spear, strangling, sawing asunder or crushing beneath iron instruments, pounding in a mortar or beating to death. In certain specific cases the Almighty decrees that the penalty shall te death by stoning, If, for instance, a man marries a maiden and discovers on his wedding night that she isn’t a virgin, the Law permits bim to turn her out on the street and let e ’ - is God ‘What - on earth - 1s God doing?’”’ will be the question asked at more than 1,000 Christmas vesper services tobe held across Canada in early December, conducted by Canadian Girls In Training (CGIT) in Baptist, Christian (Disciples of Christ), Presbyterian and United Churches from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland.Congregations are asked “to join in this gathering of His community, to celebrate His presence in our midst, to be alert to what, on earth, He is doing?’ The services will be “What - on earth doing?” The 33rd annual vesper service being held this year was prepared by Rev.Lois Wilson of Hamilton, with assistance from girls in Hamilton and Kettleby, Ontario, Offerings from these services are the only regular source of income of the National CGIT Committee which co-ordinates and provides resources for CGIT groups across the country, Dates and times of services will be announced by local CGIT groups.OBITUARY Mrs.Harriet Evelyn Berry, better known to her many friends in Woodlands as Jimmy, died last Saturday, November 4th at the Roy - al Victoria Hospital at the age of 66.Jimmy had been in poor health for some time. She is survived by her husband Mac, sons Bill and John and grand children Douglas, David, Donald, Heather, Susan and Michael Funeral services took place yesterday, Tuesday November 7th, at St.Edward’s Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m.with interment in the St.Edward’s Cemetery. The Reverend Paul Brown officiated at the church service.—_—— gladly received.CHURCH MEETING The C.W.L.ot Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish is holding a General Meeting on November 13th, at 8 p.m.All members are urged to attend.Anyone interested will be x CHRISTMAS FAIR St.George's Anglican Church Christmas Fair, is being held at Centennial Park School, on November 18th, at 1 .0'clock."Tea room, Gift Centre, Home bake.Favourite stalls for dll.prizes.Everyone Welcome.Gomes and door "The Almighty didn't always decree hanging as the way fo carry out the sentence” the congregation stone her to death, Now forgetting for the moment tie piety involved here, how could you carry out a sentence like that today? In the Chateau- guay Valley, at least, where the land is good and JE ME the women not so good, it just wouldn’t be possible. To begin witli, where would you “e able to find enough stones?H.Gordon Green Dawson College Montreal SOUVIENS Remembrance Day Services VALLEYFIELD BRANCH Service at 12.30 p.m.at the Legion Hall, Sunday ‘November 12th, 1.30 p.m.- Parade leaves for cenotaph on Jacques Cartier opposite the court house.CHATEAUGUAY BRANCH Sunday November 12th at 2 p.m.at the Cenotaph in front of the Town of Chateauguay Town Hall in Cha- teauguay Station.) enjoy a ‘‘flow” ofcommunicationregardless of its time- span, subject matter, the persons involved, or the outcome - to be willing to accept a change in outlook, to learn something new, Once you've experienced such enrichment, anything less pales by comparison, How do you begin? The first step is developing the ability to ACCEPT THE OTHER'S EXISTENCE, By that I don’t mean telling yourself verbally: “I accept him/her,,, I accept my *“riend” (husband, child, teacher, or any label which differentiates or classi- fles the person), I mean ‘‘accepting’ on the nonverbal level, a feeling of open-mindedness, putting aside your assumptions 22 what the particular “lapel?entails, the ideas youve formulated as to how the “labal” should behave, what you expect from the “label’”?, Be prepared not to agree - but rather be prepared to search for understanding, There’s a Zen story which illustrates the ‘‘openness’’ necessary: Twostudantscametoa Zen Master saying: “We have cometolistento you’, The Master looked at them and then went into the kitchen and returned with a tray holding twocups filled with tea and a teapot, He placed the tray before the students and began pouring more tea into the full cups and the tea overflowed, The studants asxed the Master what he was doing, He didn’t answer and they asked him again, The Master then said: ‘Do you understand what I mean?” The students answered ‘No’, “Then you'd better go home,’ the Master replied, The Mister’s message? The students were not ready to listen -= their cups were full, Just as full cups will hold no more tea, full minds will hold no more knowledge, Listening is being receptive to ec EE ; THE ST.LAWRENCE SUN, NOVEMBER 8, 1972 people and their existence, whether one likes them or not, and it is not possible tobe receptive when the ‘teacups are overflowing?’, “Empty your cup’ - another way of saying: ina communication situation, forget your assumptions, your expectations, and allow yourself to accept what is going on at the present (a surefire way of learning something you didn’t know before), N.B.: Once a month the Human Development Asso- clation holds a COMMUNICAT.OM CLINIC to introduce general semantics to the public, Next meeting: Tuesday evening, 8,15 p.m., November 14th at 381 Melville, Westmount (just south of Sherbrooke facing Westmount Park), Aayone interested in developing communicating skills is welcome, McGill turns teachers on to environment Two McGill University professors, Bob Searles and John Spence, have come up with a different way of attacking environmental problems-through children.People today, they feel, have very little comprehension of the complexities of our environment and consequently find it difficult to deal with such crucial is- Sues as pollution and over-population.Presumably, the next generation will face evengreat- er problems and unless they can cope, the situation will continue to deteriorate until eventually it is beyond control.Bearing this in mind, Bob Searles, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, decided that children must be given a thorough grounding in ecology and the best way to do this would be through their teachers, Plans were initiated for acour- se in ecology to be taught to elementary school teachers through Mc- Gill’s Centre for Continuing Education.Searles found considerable interest in his idea around McGill, and notably with the Biology Department and Dr, Spence, who is a member of the Ecology group. The course, which has an enrolment of 22, is divided into two sections: ECOLOGICAL FEATURES OF OUR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, which began six weeks ago, and ECOLOGICAL PROFLEM3 OF OUR ENVIRONMENT which will start after Christ- mass ECOLOGICAL FEATURES is designed to teach the basic facts about eco-systems and to glve the members of the class some understanding of the complex Inter-rela- tionships in the web of life, It will instruct them in the identification of local flora and fauna and show them how toprepare mini eco-systems for Cwils or SNOWBLOWERS The Heavyweights you can operate one-handed Uni-trol lever on the Gilson Snowblower lets you start, change speeds, and stop.No conservation of natural resources, the population explosion and noise, air and water pol= lution. The subject matter of the course is important; but-even more vital is the attitude of the professors, As Spence puts it; ‘First of all, all education is environmentally, hopelessly Inadequate, and secondly, the thought processes that we are teaching children are not sufficient to enable them to handle the difficult problems society is faced with today. We have a segmented approach to education, a blinkered look at something in great depth.Any solution to current problems on this poor little planet willonly be through a syntheticap- proach - being able to relate everyting, And this 1s exactly what children are not getting’.Ecology cannot be taught in a vacuum; chemistry, physics, mathematics, indeed almost every discipline must be drawn in.And most important it must come alive to students; they must learn to relate it to their own life experiences, One of the most interesting aspects of the course is the field trips, five of which are scheduled for the fall term.Members of the class make day excursions en groupe to Mont St-Hilaire, the Morgan Arboretum, Macdonald College, etc. They are asked to have a good look around and observe the types of animals they see, the types of plants, the amazing interdependence at all levels of the life cycle. They fill bottles with water from a stream and observe the actions of the organisms they have captured. What at first seems like pretty dull stuff suddenly becomes a source of great excitement. They are told to let their imaginations ( continued on page 24 } The Grade 2 students of Julius Richardson School, Chateauguay, Jast week. The children wrote postcards of introduction, attached th Balloons precede Telstar up in the method of cutting, including bone removal; and natural shrinkage reduce the amount of useable meat, À typical yield offreezer= ready meat from a side of beef would be 70-80% of the hanging weight, To illustrate the point, picture a 300-pound side of beef which could be purchased for 70 cents per pound with the seller providing services of cutting, wrapping and fast freezing, Total cost of the purchase is $210,00 However, with a 75%yield of cuts or 225 pounds to take home to the freezer, then the actual cost per pound is $210, divided by 225 pounds or 93.3 cents per pound, This certainly appears like a good, buy on porterhouse steaks, but you must remember you’r paying the same price for the hamburger you receive, Another common coms plaint involves the type and quantity of vartous roasts or steaks cut from the meat purchased, Thus a knowledge of cuts and their location on the carcass aids in knowing what to expect, Main cuts from the front quarter include the blade, short rib, cross - rib, prime-rib, and standing rib roasts, blade (chuck) and rib steaks, From the hind quarter come the wing or club, porterhouse, T= bone, sirloin and round steaks, rump roasts, and sirloin tip roast, Hame~ burger and stewing meat are prepared from the trim and tougher portions of both quarters, Only top quality beef should be put in the freezer, Freezing will not improve the quality of the product, but if maintained of 0 degré F.or lower and properly wrapped, most beet can be kept in the freezer for TAPIS CARPET TUILES TILES PRELART OILCLOTH 4 CERAMIQUE TAPISSERIE WALL-PAPER Venez comparer nos prix Come and Compare our Prices "es JACQUES FILIATRAULT over 83 PRINCIPALE CHATEAUGUAY 692-2242 DISTRIBUTEUR DE PEINTURES Mt ROYAL PEINTURES MONT-ROYAL INC.PAINT DISTRIBUTOR Beef Purchases 8-12 months. The top grade of beef is Canada A, comprised of 4 fat categories, 1 to 4, with 1 being the leanest and 4 the fattest. The second grade is Canada B.A freezer meat purchase usually represents a sizeable dollar outplay so seek out a reputable dealer, discussing with him what to expect from your purchase.Check to ascertain if the meat is Government inspected.Today about 85% of Canada’s beef supply carries the famillar Federal inspection legend, ‘Canada Approved’’ or “Canada’’ assuring you the meat came from a healthy animal, processed under sanitary conditions. So next time before you buy beef for your freezer, think about these points, ask some questions and your purchase should result in more complete satisfaction.Me GILL ( continued from page 14) run rampant, toask themselves how this incredible system fits together - who eats what, the number of squirrels the acorns from one tree will nourish, how many square feet ofgrass it takes to produce a pound of butter, They are told to think for themselves, and to search for the answers to their many questions on their own, not to turn to the professor as the almighty authority, These field trips serve a double func- ton; they introduce the teacher to the excitement of the environment and they show him how to conduct field trips with his own students.all, they emphasize that the teacher must encourage children to seek out answers on their own, Hopefully, these chidren will eventually begin to question man’s role in the earth’s network, toreali- ze that even the smallest interference on man’s part has a chain reaction, Lake Memphramagog and the James Bay project will be of special interest to the class, since Dr.Spence is heavily in~ volved in both, He is a member of a joint program funded by the Québec Department of Education to study the life processes in Lake Mem- phramagog and in addition, is environmental co-or- dinator of a Task Force funded by Indian Affairs and Northern Development (through the Indians of Cuébec Association) to do an independent assessment of the entre James Bay development, Spence strongly belleves that if the generation ofplanners and politicians who conceived the James Bay scheme had received some environmental education when they were young, many mistakes could have been avoided Searles and Spence see the course as a beginning - certainly a successful beginning 1f one can judge from the large number of applicants who had to be refused and from the en= thusiastic reactions of the members of the class. They would like to see more university departments co-operate to produce courses on environmental issues, Above l'affaire du SOLEIL Projet Vert Les moyens de locomotion moderne élargissent beaucoup le champ d’observation et facilitent 1’exploration des contrees lointaines. En définitive, ce n’est guere qu’en allant à pied qu’on découvrira vraiment 1a nature, Marcher lentement dans la campagne, ou a travers les bols, longer la rivie- re, contourner un lac, où escalader la montagne, .quel spectacle est-il plus fascinant?.TUILES VENYL adhesive.du dos BOUL.ST-JEAN BAPTISTE THE FAMOUS ARTIC-CAT PANTHER CASH- ENLEVEZ le papier protecteur VINYL ASSESTOS TILES TAPIS the WAREHOUSE ‘ N-CARRY CHOISISSEZ - ACHE Photo authentique de notre vaste entrepôt.AMIANTE TILES VINYL ASBESTOS PEEL -remove the paper backing to expose the factory- (25 X 12) Reg.32¢ applied EXTRA SPLTIAL 22: TUILES VINYLE D’AMIANTE 1ère QUALITÉ - Choix de couleurs - 12"" x 12” Reg.22 EXTRA SPÉCIAL 1 Be so ri LE PLUS GROS CENTRE DE L’AUTONEIGE DE LA REGION THE BIGGEST SNOWMOBILE GENTRE IN THE AREA CARPETS BUY DIRECTLY from ACHETEZ DIRECTEMENT de L’ENTREPOT 9 TEZ - EMPORTEZ EXTRA SPECIAL TAPIS AGRILAN CARPET BELLEWOOD “HARDING” FIRST QUALITY VERY THICK VELVET Prix du distributeur PREMIERE QUALITÉ VELOUR TRES EPAIS REG.$12.35 8 50 ® v.c.TAPIS COMMERCIAL CARPET Prix du distributeur Washable Lavable Facilité Easy to clean d'entretien ; snow.on Ste Marguerite Boulevard, Chateauguay Centre.( Glen Photo ) Centre Girls Softball Succesful season ends with well entended .banquet A greatfinale toa higi:ly successful season of softball took place last F riday night at the annual banquet by the junior female citizens of our town.Approximately 175 girls, representing Chateauguay Centre had the opportunity this year, as in the past, to participate in the game of softball, For awri- ter to express thanks and give credit where credit is due is quite difficult, as with most organizations that retire till the next season, words of appreciation seem to sound as clichés.Nevertheless these appreciative words cannot go unheard, There Is.just too many hours spent by too many people, organizing, coacning umpiring and generally lending a helping hand and donating leisure hours, which could be spent with their respective families, to give your daughter and mine an opportunity tobe= come fine athletes and to enjoy the comradeshipof a teammate.I must admit in all honesty that there are times when one is involved in the betterment of our community, when we hold our hand to our head and wonder ‘‘why did I ever offer my services’?as the load seems too much to bear, To not admit this would be anun- truth, But therewardsare so great as compared to the few headaclies and hardships, that you only wish somehow you could communicate to the citizens of Chateauguay to come forth at the startof a particular season of sport and ‘‘get involved’?, I had not intended this column to be a tear-jerker, but I cannot impress enough upon the parents 175 tiny softball players to turn out next spring to our meet ing, and join in the setting up and organizing of a league such as ours.We need YOUR participation and when you give of yourself you will be the one rewarded. Our annualbanquet held “many surprises this year coming from varied individuals.Mr.Ken Moody was instrumental in obtaining 19 trophies which he awarded: - The Optimist Club contributed 12 of these which were presented to the Outstanding Player of each team in each of our three categories. In the Junior Section SYLVIE CARRIERE was the recipient for the Jets PAULINE DURANTY - Belles, .KERRY HAYES Pussycats and HEATHER FEWTRELL of the Expos. In the Intermediate Section KAREN HYDE - Maxies, NATALIE MARTINE - Panther, D.CHIASSON - Tigers, LORNA BLACKMAN - , Lions, MAUREEN WIL - KINS - Swingers and DOREEN DUNDAS - Snoo- ples, In the Senior Division it Was FABIEN COTE from the Mustangs and JOAN DESPAROIS - Cougars.Plaza Esso donated four trophies which were awarded to the most valuable player. In the Junior category, LINE RO- CHETTE of the Jets took the 1st place trophy and SYLVIE BEAUDOIN of the Pussycats, runner- up.In Intermediates CAROL GUERIN from the Lions was declared the winner with JUDY PEL- LIE of the Snoopies the ’ runner-up.From Soft- Treet we received a donation of two trophies which went to our Senior Division.DEBBIE HILLOCK of the Mustangs was the winner there and MARY DORE of the Cougars placed second, A very special award was presented which took a lot of statistical effort on the part of Mr, Ken Moody, who Jy way of the point system concluded the winner for tie title of “Best All-Around Player’’of the league. This great honor going to Holly Leedham from the Intermediate category.Holly played for the Panthers and her tremendous effort not only as a ball player but her genuine spirit of the game attributed to the final decision in presenting this young athlete with our special award.Congratulations to all you girls who received special awards and a congratulatory liand-shake tu all the other individuals who’s names were not mentioned, Past-‘President and Past-Vice President Joan Wilkins and Pat Smith were presented with a plaque which was to express the leagues feelings for being the twola- dies, who some years back saw a need in the Centre for our girls and instigated the organization, This year’ s President, Dot Houston wishes to ‘thank all her committee who assisted in her first year of organizing our league .Dot is fully aware that one person cannot function to the fullest without the full co-opera- tion of the committee. So Softball players, I bid you adieu for the time being and wish you alla pleasant winter season and invite you to sign up with the Chateauguay Centre Girls Softball League come next spring for another fun- filled summer. Mme Hélène Morin, 97 Oxford Crescent, Chateauguay Centre, Quévec.CHATEAUGUAY By Bud Roper The Chateauzuay Minor Hockey League’s 1972- 73 House League season is in full swing at the Chateauguay arena and some outstanding performances are being watched by the many supporiers of the organization, Team balance appears to be good throughout all section, and this factor is of vital imparlance to the leagu2 as it permits all boys to develop their abilities in the best mannar, The teams in-all sections will play a twenty one gam: schedule before moving into playoff action, and year round support on the part of parents is urged in order that they may observe the improvements shown by all players throughou! the season, Over the season the reports of games in the.league will be carried on a weekly basis as has been the custom since the league moved into the arena four seasons ago, It is hoped that this report, which is designed primarily for the players involved in the league will once again assist in the young players enjoyment, The reporting of games is made difficult on some occasions through faulty score sheets, and this matter is already creating problems not only for the publicity section of thz league, but more importantly for the game secretary and his assistant who are responsible for the standings and league scoring records, On a large number of sheets no indication is being made of the section involved while on other team names, names oI goalkeepers, dates and other important items are being neglected, All ofthese factors create problems that can easily be solved oy a little care on the part of coaches, and their assistance is urged immediately, The league game report this week covers games in which information was complete while some others are missing from the report because of the lack of a score sheet copy or through other factors which made the sheet impossible to understand, À special reminder toboyinthe Pee Wee age group tha! fourieea openings are now available in that section for which registrations will be accepted on a first come first served basis, Those interested may register by calling Mr, Ron Nurse at 691-5246 where arrangements will be made for the signing of registration cards and collection of the $6 fee, Les résultats des
