the SUN that this year’s enrolment will be somewhete between 1800 and 1900.an increase of some 300 over the final figure at the end of the last school year.Last year we wrote in our article concerning Chat’y Protestant School enrolment.“the school board is to be congratulated in foreseeing the expansion.A third elementary on time on September Sth.”” We feel congratulations are again in order.First of all for foreseeing an addition al increase in the high school enrolment and the addition built on to the existing high school will be ready when schools opens Secondly.and,.perhaps these comments should appear in a more editorial type of form.but in any case we feel that the Chateauguay school board, perliaps moreso that other boards in the area due to the expansion and the character of the problems it has to deal with, is doing a magnificient job under its chairman Bob Jobber on the present stormy seas of educational reform in the province of Quebec. We don’t plan to go into detail, many of the problems the board deals with and has dealt with school is ready for opening ee ace have appeared in previous issues of our paper. We have no axe to grind and favoëüùr no one.We simply want to point out that thé board members are giving freely of their time,.very freely indeed.and perhaps also {rom their pockets.in the cause of pducation, There are no salaries and morely token expense accounts. There is also very little glory because if we are to believe what we hear the board pleases very few, if any, of the taxpayers in Chateauguay. However, inspite of all this we feel that justice will prevail and that those who have crred will mend their ways by getting behind the board's decisions and give it insentive by attending the regular public meeting. In Lery NEW FIRE STATION PROPOSAL DEFEATED Ville de Lery council members were very disappointed last week-end when a majority of tax payers voted against tne uulliing ol a There’s trouble up there on the trapeze, Our performer is dangling and seems to be in a precarious position, As this is a rehearsal and there are no spectators in the tent, we will have to ask the circus animals whether this is a trick or a predicament, Mr.Camel, what’s happening?“Very athletically, that performer up there represents all Cha- teauguay parents who were given no other choice than to take it upon themselves to pay for bus transportation for their children attending local Protestant schools, Cam el transportation may be cheap, but bus transportation isn’t! How would you like to have your taxes suddenly increased by a sum ranging from $30 to $100 or more a year?It amounts to that depending upon the number of children of school age in a family, Over my holy heated humps, it’s a nasty situation!” Thank you Mr.Camel, andhow about you Mrs, Giraffe?“I may be sticking my neck out, however 1 must say that it’s outrageous! How can anyone say that the Protestant School Board is In no position to provide the necessary transportation without increasing further the already heavy burden of the Châteauguay taxpayers?Has any consideration what soever been given to those parents who will have to pay an average of approximately $65 more a year? With such an Increase, what does the already heavybur- den mentionned above become to these people? Some think that it is tantamount to jungle play and wish to remind people that since we all live in the same community, the spirit of togetherness ought to prevail and the burden carried by all taxpayers, (Here some growls are heard) There will be objectors but over my native nervy neck, let its long ‘length be a measure of decency,” Thank you Mrs, Giraffe, Here comes Mr, Elephant; I wonder how he feels about it, Mr, Elephant, may we have your opinion please?“My dear sir, I am a vehicle which has had a lot of experience in transportation and.I will firs state very emphatically that Chateauguay is not a urban community! A strong point is that the local bus service cannot be compared with that of a truly urban area where a service runs regularly from morning till night and seven days a week, This is understandable - we are more rural than urban! Our public bus service started to operate soon after the opening of the Châteauguay Regional (please note that the adjective regional is never used in urban areas because it is relative to rural) Shopping Centre, It is a commercial enterprise operating mainly to transport people to other commercial enterprises (stores), Tell me, have you ever tried on a Sunday morning tolea- PARENTS and TEACHERS Get What They Ask For.A few years ago aneducational reporter for a Toronto newspaper wrote that, after watching The Canadian Home and School and Parent - Teacher Federation in action, he was convinced that the Federation worked for it would get, sooner or later, The results would come, he said, not because it was a pressure group but because its collective judgment is sound and it follows up its resolutions with action, Throughout Canada, local associations report thousands of successes each year andpro- gress is shown on provincial and national levels too, For example, the national federation has asked that family allowance payments for students over the age oi sixteen Ye &Shtinudd and "the government has promised to do this, A request was made for the extension of federal help for vocational and technical education, This too hasbeenpromiséd, Two years ago, the federation asked that the McRuer report on sexual offenders be imple- fnented. This has been done, Home & School made the first moves which resulted in the two Canadian Conference on Educa- and the 1960 Canadian | Conference on Children, On the provincial level, Quebec has asked for representation on the provincial education committee and this is now in sight, Alberta saw the need for a Western veterinary college as one of * the avenues of continued edu- i cation, and this will be realized before long, These are examples of the , success story of Home & School, (continued on page 3) ve Châteauguay Centre by local bus and visit a friend in Chateau- guay North?Let alone the fact that you cannot take a bus to go to the church of your choice, And this is understandable too, No local bus service can operate a regular schedula profitably - we are more rural than urban! Over my two trim tusks, I wish that the people in Quebec would recognize the situation as such,” Thank you Mr, Elephant, All that can be said now fis that the safety net is in the hands of the Home apd School and Parent-Teacher Tie, LAFEITINEIIFIINIY ST.LAWRENCE Beauharnois, Quebec, Thursday, August 29, 1963 G PAR MICHEL CHARLEBOIS LA FETE DU TRAVAIL Par les imposantes festivités coutumières, nous fêterons lundi prochain l'évènement ouvrier par excellence, J'emploie cet épithète, car il décrit correctement le reflet magnanime que l’image de cette fête doit produire en chacun de nous. A genoux devant M.Philippe Boyer, l’instigateur résolu, le défenseur acharné, le réalisateur infatiguable de ce gigantesque pas vers le progrès.un be, Co "A NT 1 0 FP 1 73 0 € FT 0 4 0 dat ae dastoceodecr st dtdtse vteverotoesyergugoeoreeneansy 692-6753 SALES — SERVICE HANDFIELD MOTORS LIMITED MONTEREY - METEOR - COMIT 174 Salaberry - Chateauguay myer A Va .a ON THE OCCASION OF * J an Fa LABOR DAY 1963 wt WISH TO CONVEY TO ALL EMPLOYEES AND THEIR FAMILIES OUR VERY BEST WISHES! A wedding of local interest took place in Fredericton N.Bon Friday August 16th at 3.00 rt 410001 2500 T0 02 = Grr srr rrr renee e THE ST.LAWRENCE SUN, AUGUST 29, 1963 Nn : Little Johnny’s father found him shaking his pet rabbit and demanding.“Five and five, how much fs that?” “What?s the meaning of this?LA ROSE DRUG STORES See us for all Your REXALL Needs EFFICIENT PRESCRIPTION SERVICE St.Laurent Beauharnois Ellice Tel.CO-8-3336 Tel.CO-8-3004 1 7 Refour à L'École - Back to School - TUNIQUES(tunics) Great Value!
