Such Wonders in the Pit.A NAPOLEON OF SPECULATION.Backed by a Syndicate of Western Farmers He Believes in Legitimate Market and Has Taught the Shorts a Lesson.George H.Phillips, whose daring operations on the Chicago Board of Trade are now on every western speculator’s tongue, is called the “big little man” of the corn pit.He is called the “big” because of his nerve, and “little” because in physique he could almost be confined in aipint bottle. Then, too, be is modest and retiring, and, as compared with many of his opponents on the Board of Trade, poor.Jn his November, 1900, deal in corn_he is, supposed to have eprned $150,000.What he has since made or lost in his fight in the corn, oats and wheat pits ia still a matter of speculation. Those who pretend to know his situation assert that, if he defeats the ar movement now operating against him, he will be winner of $500,000.Mr.Phillips’ phenomenal rise as a speculator appears to be dug to his willingness to break traditions of the board, his utter lack of speculative fear and the most unlimited capital which he seems to have at his command, and which is said to come frori a syndicate of middle Jowa and central Illinois farmers, who believe in legitimate trading—that 1s, actual buying, selling and handling of grain.Led by Phillips, they have ect themselves against the rich and poor traders of the board, who ost delight in operating upon fictitious shortages or fictitious surpluses.Thirty-four years old, born in Morris, Til | Mr.Phillips became, an elevator boy in his father’s storehouse in Morris while still a schoolboy. He went to Chicago as soon as he was free from school, and worked at anything his hands found to do.He preferred city life to that of the country, and announced his determination never to return to Morris, except as o visitor. His father was a grain dealer, and he showed a fondness for the business himaelf, eo that after being in Chicayo a short time he found himself working with the corn inspectors of the Alton and Burlington roads. He spent his days about the tracks of theee companies, and became familiar with cvery dctail of corn inspcetion and the nature of the cereal.Later he was a buyer for the house of George A.Seaverne & Co.in the corn market, and finally became a commission merchant on his own account, having a very limited capital, but a wide experience ir the nature of com.He had also the belief that through fictitious operations the bears kept the price of corn too low in the Chicago market, and that it could bé maintained higher if any one dared to make the fight.; * He proved the truth of his opinion by entering what has become known as the “corn deal of November, 1900,” withcat a dollar to control the market, and yet hav-_ ing the entire product of corn then insight under thumb.Arrayed sgainst him were men who count their millions on their abili- fingers—men of long heads and shrew as traders. He outwittcd them all.His head was the Jongest, his nerve the greatest, his thorodigh mastery of the details of the business too much fur his opponents. It is a charactoristic of the man.in his opcrations—that of six months ago and the present onc—that he depends upon the armer for his guidance, and not upon Government or other crop reports. His car- respondence with the actual producers of corn covers every State.in the Union where there is a com field or à grazary.is quotcd, as saying: RELIES ON THE FARMERS.“I do not cate a fig for the Government reports or the statistics sent out by reporters.1 have nothing to eay about them, but I do nôt want them.I want to know what the farmer has to say about the supply, and I want the information fran him direct. Then I am ready to act.” Evidently the farmers informed him truly in the “November deal,” for he caused every big corn operator on the Chicago Board of Trade a big loss and came out a heavy winner himself. He acted fairly in his ¥innings, too, in the face of the fact that many of the operators whom he had at his mercy had endeavoured in ways not too scrupulous in nature to ruin_him by sudden calls for big mar- .He did rot cause a single failure on the Board of Trade in his “November deal,” and in the presenf Lettle his conduct has been aboveboard. It is something new for the Chicago Board of Trade to have a man upset its calculations as Phillips has, and do it on the bald proposition that he is right and the speculators of the board not only wrong -now, but wrong for years «past. Not even “Joe” Leiter gave the board such a stirring up as thi} young and seemingly callow man has.Mr.Leiter's deal was a tremendous speculation between him and the giant operators of the board. He had millions and-they had millions, and when he quit anywhere from $6,000,000 to $3,000, 000 a loser, there was a ‘‘gentleman’s settlement,” and things went on in the old routine.Mr.Leiter had back of him in his operations the traditions of an old and respected name, and he was part of the social life of the very men he was speculating against. He bad his “fling.” it was ex- fected, and everybody enjoyed it but the osers. Not s0 with Mr.Phillins.Except for the notoriety he gained last autumn and his present eminence in the vit, he is not any kind of a recognized factor in Chicago. He has lived a modest, retiring, hard-working life, and but- for his remarkable knowledge of corn and his faith in the corn.producers might never have been heard of outside of the small circle of his local friends.- He has a friend from Morris by name “Dan” Hill.“Dan” is supposed to own as many acres of farm land in Illinois as the famous Beully once did.He has money and land, and an sbounding faith in young Phillips. It was he who helped Phillips to buy and hold until he got ready to sell a little less than 3,000,000 bushels of corn in the “November deal.” and it is he who is with him to-day.Behind the two are many rich and influential farmers ot Iowa and Illinois, and it is helieved the combination has too much ready cash to Anyway, Phillips says that it cannot be routed.and he ought to know.As to Phillips himself.he is not an enigma, although many traders walk about discussing him in most mysterious tones comfort and very little showj: a man who liked the e of life for the: rame’s own sake, and for nothing cle Mr.Phillips leaves it every morning in a most matter-of-fact fashion, walks leisurely about half a mile to the suburban station of the Northwestern road, is carried in to the Wells street station in 18 mim- utes, and finds himself in the Rialto building, where his offices are, 10 minutes later. The Rialto stands just south of the Board of Trade building, and is connected with the latter bv a bridge and court. The first thing the new speculative star does when he enters his office is to attack his mail.He receives hundreds of letters daily. Many of thew are begging requests.Others are from clesgymen in all parts of the country, who state that they are praying for his success. It is not made clear why the clergy should be inierested mA corn deals, but Mr.’ Phillips accepts the letters and politely answers them. Many farmers write him thanking him for what he has dope, for it has enabled them to ‘get better prices for their corn.Grain dealers address him because bas brought about a most rigid inspection of grain, and indirectly secured e in- : dictment of one operator for alleged “doctoring” of corn.GEORGE H.PHILLIPS, The Chicago Corn King. While his mail is disappearing he is re ceiving advice from all parts of the country as to the state of the market, and also information as to the plans of his opponents. He is mid to be one of the first big speculators in the West who have made it a point to know in one way or another what the opposite side of the market is preparing to do to him.He is ready for his operations of the day by 0 o'clock, and a few minutes later may be found in the boards, ons of his- faveurite resorts, or hidden away see no reason why I should uot continue in it.” On the Board of Trade those who ed- mire him the most say: He has done more than any five or ten of the old-time operators to bring outside trade to the Chicago market. He has a big line of customers buring corn on its merits, and he ought to helped instead of injured.” _He may be a deposed “corn king” in time, but it is not going
