London, November 6.—The pamphlet of Sandford Fleming, C.M.G., dealing with fast trans-Atlantic line routes is freely quoted here by the opponents of the St.Lawrence route, as conclusive evidence against using that waterway as a fast mail route.‘ It is believed that a pamphlet of this kind coming from a delegate chosen by the Canadian Goverment to represent Canada’s views on the steamship gues- tion and the Pacific Cable matter, must seriously influence official opinion, and add to the already great difficulties of raising the necessary capital for a new service.Mr.Fleming, who is now here, tends that he has fresh evidence of the leading 6t.Lawrence captains and of naval officers which makes his case against the route as a safe channel for twenty knot steamers unanswerable, In view of thess statemefits, I understand that Hom.Mr.Laurier bas intimated that a sub-cammittes of the Cabinet will thoroughly sift the matter, gathering the evidence of all the available experts, before approving a fast mail contract from Great Britain to Quebec.‘ It is alleged this committee will be able to find that strong warnings were called forth from leading officers of the Marine Department with a vital bearing upon the qubstion. It is also.al- laged these wers-fuppresæed during the negotiations leading up to the Allan's fast mail contract.con- YANKEE TRESPASSERS.A London Paper Complains of Thelre Dolngs in the Yukon District.(By Cable from the Star’s Special Cor- [i respondent in London.) London, November 6.—The Weéstmir- ster Gazette to-day calls attention to United States trespasses on British territories in the Yukon district, and says that in the Stewart river camps the Yankees are freely washing Canadian gold, and at Farty Mile Creek they have actually set up a town with a United States post office on Canadian ground.United States surveyors admit this.“If,” says the Gazette, “we did this in Venezuela, what vials of American wrath would have been poured on our- heads.” A TORONTO EXPLOSION.Gas in a Paper Factory Blew the Side Out of the Building.(Special to the Star.) Toronto, November 6.— At 8.30 o'clock this mornng a terrific explosion, which .shook the eastern part of the city and made itself heard for blocks around, occurred in the south-eastern portion of No.301 Front street, East, a building occupied by the Paterson Manufacturing Company.for the manufacture of * building paper and roofing materials, “street; Charltan, Robert, 18 adjoining the gas works.Five people were in the building at the time, of whom the following were injured: Lancaster, Joseph, sr, Front st., east; Adams, denry, 100 Sydenham right st.The other two were Joseph Lancaster, jr.and a lad named John Young. The effect of the explosion was to blow the north wall of Eastern portion of the building clean across the street, and leave the premises a wreck. An all- important feature of the case was the dangerous proximity of the accident to AY EVERYTHING In the SHIRT line At Manufacturer’s Prices.Shirts which others sell for a bargain at $1.25, we, who are manufacturers, sell to you for .A TOE, ‘play into the traders’ hands by over- “1553 St.Catherine Street, East.the large retort of the Consumers’ Gas Company.Joseph Lancaster, jr.was alone able, of the four men in the lower flat, to.extricate himself without aid Young.in the storey above, was al- mast unharmed and escaped by leaping from the window.Joseph Lancaster, sr., Adams and Charlton.when taken from the debris, were found to be severely injured by falling bricks and burned badly on the head and elsewhere by the flames. The lice ambulances were quickly on the scene.and Lancaster was taken home. The other two were taken to the General Hospital. The cause of the explosion was an accumulation of gas during.the process of coating the tar paper, which the company manufactures. The refuse from the gas works is used for this process. The flames burst out almost immediately and a fire alarm was sounded. The brigade responded very quickly and &éveral streams were soon playing on the wreck.A second explosion, this time apparently in the upper storey, occurred most unexpectedly, and a shower ot bricks fell upon three firemen, who were inside.Fireman Hart.of Lombard street, received a brick in the face which damaged his nose.MRS.CASTLE SENTENCED.Three Months Without Hard Labor for Shoplifting.London, November 6.— The trial of Mr.and Mrs.Walter M.Castle, of San Francisco, charged with shop-lifting, took place in the sessions house at Clerk- enwell to-day.Mr.Castle was found not guilty and Mrs.Castle was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment without hard labor.Upon the reading of the charge Mra.Chain stood boldly upright and answered “Guilty” to each of the seven counts. On behalf of Mrs.Castle, Sir Edward Clarke said that she pleaded guilty to each chargo und proceeded to ive the reasons for making stich a plea."hile Sir Edward Clarke was speaking Mrs Castle remained seated.he waa | dressed in sombre black, and kept her face covered with a handkerschief. While the jury was being sworn, the silence was broken only by Mrs.Castle's sobbing.THE WHEAT PRICES.London “Times” Belleves They Wil Advance—Itas Adviee.London, November 6.—(Special.)—A special article in the Times on the wheat question, expresses the opinion that the price will continue to advance, and advises English wheat producers not to stocking the market.ON A HOLIDAY.Ottawa.November 6.— (S ecial).— Capt.Erskine, A.D.C to His Excellency, sails from Montreal for England on the 14th inst., having been granted three months’ leave of ahsence.SUBSTITUTION the FRAUD of the day.See you get Carter's)! OF '80.MISCELLANEOUS.PARISIAN DOG FASHIONS.After a brief struggle London has been forced to concede tu Paris the distinction of setting the fashions for aristocratic dogs as well as for noble dames.Guy Towel, of the Monde Illustre, who their clothes made to order, and each of which has an gssortment of apparel complete enough to fill a trunk as large as a bandbox., The first essential for a dog of position is à set of nightgowns in batiste or in i »iik. These garments are made to but- ! ton down the back, and are supplemented by small quilted silk chest protectors.: l'or short-baired toy terriers; especially | subject to cold, pajamas are moore often made than nightgowns.Every dog cught to have at least half a dozen embroidered handkerchiefs, for nothing is more distressing to an animal of refined feelings than to bave his eyes neglected when thé wind makes them water.Except for the very amall- vst and most delicate lapdogs, lace handkerchiefs are not in good taste, but a great deal of elaboration can be bestowed upon the embroidered monograms, and in the case of small French bulldogs — which are now the most fashionable pets for ladies-bright colored bandannas or handkerchiefs of red and yellow India cotton are very: suitable and cifective.Handkerchiefs in a little buttoned pocket of a dog's coat take very little room, and is the surest way of putting a step to the vulgar habit of cleansing the eyes und the muzzle on the carpet. No dog really needs storkings, but two pairs of shoes, of which one should be made of anhydrous.leather or of India rubber, are very useful. When a dog is tv have a good two hours’ play on the luwn, or, wnat be loves better yet, a scamper in the woods, he ought to barefouted, so that he cun scratch and dig as much as he pleases. But it is only fair to the servants in a “house that when a dog is taken out for his little constitutionals he should have bis : feet covered, su that ce will not track mud across the carpets. The fissures in a dog's paws make it almost impossible for him to clean his naked foot on a doormat, and the helpless little offender gets many a cross look and sometimes even a blow from an angry Lousemaid’s broom because he has unwittingly added to the burden of.the day's work.A cleanly dog soon learns, too, that if he has shoes put on when h- trots out in the morning.he is not obliged to clegm his toes with his tongue after his morning constitutional, and when one thinks how nasty © street dirt is, vne is not surprised to see the little comrade eagerly asking for his boots on a muddy morning.During warm weather the best gnr- ment for a dog to wear indoors in the morning is a thin silk dressing gown, but a few weeks from mow this ought to be replaced by a saut du lit in flannel. For seaside wear during the first promenade in the morning white pique is the nestest possible coat, and one or two dogs at Ostend this summer wore wit h this a little sailor bat on the sunny ays.Except in the case of a dog whose ears hang as flat as those of a spaniel, the hat is, however, more of an annoyance than a confort at any time, and is a eomplication of canine apparel which has not found general favor. For town dress a cloth coat with, a Medicis collar trimmed with flowers, or a bright ruche is the For special cecasions various dresses are naturally enough indicated. For the dogs’ weddings, which have become so fashionable, the brile wears a white satin coat trimmed‘ with white gauze, and a collar decorated with’ orange blossoms, if it is her first marriage, or with pale lav- ander bows if she is a widow or divorced. The groom, of course, wears a black coat with’ white trimmings. There, is a speo- inl pocket in his walstcoat for the anklet, which iakes the place of a ring. For travelling coats made with dr whipcord are the niost practical. The lead: dogs’ tailor of Paris has made three or four coats for Russian clients. An ermine or seal cape, worn over a biaguit ‘colored oloth coat, would not be ….- gas Amare Ab ml at all to heavy for the more blus- te says of a New York winter. In where everything is so much cheaper prices the outfit would nscessarily be very much more CP ‘he new dog houses lined with yellow leather or white silk, and arranged to stand in the ¢orner of the room about twelve inches above the carpet, in order to avoid the drafts from under doors are very convenient and pretty. They soon pay for themselves in the decreased wear of chairs and sofa cushions in the drawing room or in the budoir.A well-mannered dog, if he has his own little house, will always go to it wher he is left alone in a room, and he acquires a pense of security and independ- cence which ean never he his when he is curled up in a chair which may be wanted ut any time.- 7 The most useful of all presents that can be bought for a dug is a showerproof coat.lt is no exaggeration to sy that any dog which lives in the house becomes too delicate to bear a wetting, and in an uncertain climate a pet at home day after day rather than to face a cloudy sky.The figured stuffs introduced within the last few years for ladies’ make the prettiest possible waterproof clothing for dogs; and if the coat is finished with a hood trimmed with waterproof ribbon ithe rainy day costume can be made as smart as anything in a dog's wardrobe. No little care is needed in fitting the hood, as, if it is the least bit Lou snug, a dog will worry until he rubs M off; and if, on the other hand, it Lis the least bit too large, a little stream of water runs down his neck, and wets him as effectually as if he were not dressed at all.A,great deal of care is, indeed, al- Ways necessary in arranging a dog's apparel. It is kinder to let even the shortest haired dog go without a coat in the worst weather than to dress him irregularly and «apriciously, forgetting to take off Lis coût when he comes into a steam-heated ncuse, or leaving him with a wet cape around his neck.It is unhappily quite impossible for one who lives in a cold climate ty make a constant companion of a dog without creating new needs and new weuknesses in the little creature's system. And it is much better to let a dog sleep in the stable, and only have bim with you when you go out to when you are unwilling to take the trouble to see that he is promptly and regularly dressed and undressed, when he goes out in the cold and comes back to lie before the fire. All veterinary surgeons, who give especial attention to house dogs, know that plain food, systematic exercise and regulated clothing are vital necessities, entirely forgotten by many people who will spend a hundred dollars on a jewelled collar for a dog, but will not give a thought to keeping him in goud eondition.GOSSIP.The Messrs.Cochrane, of Hillburst Farm, Hillhurst, Que., have entered and are shipping from Montreal to-morrow evening, by express, to the Madison Square Garden deputation, headed by S.H.Blake, and composed of members of the clergy and laity of the Church of England, waited on the Provincial Government yesterday and urged that the subject of religious instruction be placed on the curriculum of the public schools. The request of the deputat.on was that the Bible should be made a regular text book in the schools; that portions of it should be read regularl every day and explained to the children, and verses committed to memory by the children. They deatred, too, that this should become of the regular routine of the Ponool day, and that it should te made obligatory on the teacher to see that it was carried out. This religious instruction the deputation desires shall be given by ministers of the Gospel or by their representatives, and that each minister shall, during the time set aside by the regulation they are seeking to have included in the sghool system, have charge of and shall’ instruct the children où bis own communion.‘As it is now, clergymen are privileged, if the school trustees so allow, to give half an hour's instruction each day after the regular school hours are over, and the teacher is authorized to read a
