has created a sensation at Cote St.Paul, and many open threats have been made against ihe assailants.Tuesday night Hughes left his howe, which is situated on the Lachine canal front between this city time after the departure of the friends Frederic Charlebois and Fred.lapovinte entered the saloon. After an exchange of greetings, drinks were served. The trio remained together until nearly midnight, when they left with the intention of going to their respective ihomes.Charlebois, having a horse and cart, proposed to drive Hughes home, as the atter's residence was a long distance up the canal bank.A ttle of liquor, it is said, was taken along to liven up matters.Instead of driving home direct, sev- era: trips through the village were made, during which there were several sto By this time the men were fairly well under the influence of liquor.“A dispute then arose, and Lapointe picked up the liquor bôttie and struck Hughes a vicious blow on top of the head.Hughes was rendered unconscious by the blow, and fell tu the street. It is said by witnesses that Lapointe then followed Hughes and battered him in an unmerciful manner, and concluded by striking the prostrate man with a board which had a nad in it.This entered Hughes’ face a quarter of an inch from the left eye.By this time anum- ber of people residing ctose by had been awakened, and one of them informed a “Star” reporter that he heard Hughes while lying on the ground call out, “For God's sake don’t hit me again, as you have now hit me to kilt.Charlebois and Lepointe finally lifted inches. This has been the mark for the past two days. The Montres! agents and shippers bave, owing to the low water, taken occasion to cable their firms and connections abroad, cautioning them not to load the steamships too deeply for this port. The water from Kingston to Montral is so low that it is greatly interfering with the shipment of grains. The barges and prope.ropellsrs cannot bring down the large oads which they are accustomed to, and for this regson the ‘moving of grain is costing the companies considerably more than usual. The Richelieu & Ontario boats run all the rapids as usual, though the boats are necessarily of light draft. On the 17th of this month the rainfall was .040 of au inch. This was, of course, smail; but, since then, to to-day, not a drop of rain has f fallen.A comparison with the records for previous years shows that the drought for the present month is quite unprecedented.Between two and three inches per month is gn average rainfall; but, during the present month, up to date, three hundred and fifty-one thousandths of an inch seems to be tha best that old Jupiter Pluvius can do.Whether this ost respectable divinity is beginning to feel the effects of age or not, cannot as yet be decided with certainty.and it would be rash’ to form hasty conclusions.Perhaps _he is only suffering from temporary indis sposition and that, before long, the gentle rain will fall once more to refresh the parched earth, and save many a farmer's crops, a8 consumination most devoutly to be wished for.The rainfall for the month, to date, is, as has been already stated, .351 inches. For the corresponding period of 1894, it was 2.120 inches. The rainfails, in inches, during the present year, each month were as follows: January, LE February, 1189; March, 1.003 : ril, 3.606; May, 3,110; June, 2.612; sui} (to date) .351.The country resident sighs for rain just now.His stock of rain water is fast disappearing, and, should the dryness continue, he will have to do as the followers of the prophet are advised to ; do in such circumstances, and perform his daily ablutions in sand. The river is sinking rapidly.and south shore residents are experiencing a good deal of inconvenience on this account. When the water shall have quite left the river, steps will be at once taken to lay out a good road to the city.THE ARSON CASE.The Man Wanted In Connection
