excellence of their team work, the almost marvellous passing of the puck from.one to another ut the forwards, the accuracy of their shots und lifts, fairly astounded the howe pluyers, while their line of efence when tae rubber at auy time approached their goal wits almost impr gnable.Only once was a goal scored agunst that line and that was more than half an accident, Fenwick's drive carvoming against the gaol tender’s skate and deflecting the course of the disk before it wlizzed between the the flags.A feature of their work, which was far superior to that of the home players, was the speed with which they carried the puck down the glittering sur tace.Each one of them can skate like :he wind, and at the same time keep his wits about him, and at the right moment pass the puck across to one of his confreres, who will be in the right place to receive it.Time after time the home players were baffled by this work, but if they have learned the lesson the visit of the Canadian crack-a-jacks wil} not be without results, and next winter they will be able to put up a faster game than they have heretofore played, It is acknowledged that the Victorias are lar and away the best aggregation of players in Canada, where the game was originally played, and when thelr game was contrasted with that of the Shamrock team, which is second (t) in the race for the Canadian championship, and which played two games with the New York Hockey Club at the Ice Palace, devoters of that particular branch of sport can easily see how far they are ahead of any other team in the and, as they grew bolder, they wickedly claimed that the school would never be built in London at all.“This was the position which the Advertiser had to confront,” that journal declares ; and then proceeds: It pointed out that the Government had been consistent in its policy; that the position of London as an educational centre had been recognized by the Administration; that the money had been voted, but that there was danger in indorsing a candidate whose associates in the Legislature and their newspaper advocates had at every - turn opposed the construction of the insti tution.The logical inference was that a loyal Londoner, who would stand up fov keeping faith with the le in supporting the declared policy of the Government, should be endorsed by the citizens of kondon.By way of “clinching” its argument, it pleads that it was only looking after “the material welfare of our citizens, as well as of the people of Western Ontario generally”; and then points to the success of these tactics at the polls as a final proof of their legitimacy.Did the London Advertiser ever know of a barefaced bribe offered by a corrupt Government to a wavering constituen- ¢y in excuse of which this same line of defence might not have been presentedt Let us suppose that it is a railway bonus which a Government is going to give a local line if the interested constituency returns a Ministerial member, Could not the supporters of that member who dangled this promise before the electors declare that to them ‘'it was a pure matter of public policy?” that they spoke ol it in this open fashion, only because the opposing political party bad criticised the proposal! They could point out that ‘‘the Government had been consistent in its policy; *> that the position of the constituency as a railway centre “had been recognized by the Administration” ; and that the money had been voted or would be voted, as the vase might be, “but that there was danger in endorsing a candidate whose associates in the Legislature and their newspaper advocates had at every turn opposed the construction of the’ line.Then they could declare that tke *‘loyal Londoner,’ or the loyal whatever else it might be, “who would stand up for keeping faith with- the poople in.sup- lished porting the declared policy ol the Government, should be indorsed by the citizens of London”—or whatever the tempted constituency might happen to be called.This would surely fit ‘“Guil- let and the Railway” as easily as “Leys and the Normal School.” > Nor would the political success, to which the Advertiser refers, whitewash the transaction.In the old days when the Advertiser was accustomed to march to political defeat, it would have poured its scorn upon such a contention had it been advanged by a Tory journal in defence of a ‘’Guillet and the Railway” transaction.If the laurels of success are to have such an effect upon the heads of all champions of political purity, the country will hops that some of them at least will be saved from success, The Advertiser will be in a better position if it pleads the frenzy of the campaign and throws itself on the mercy of the court.London election campaigns are said to be very heating to the blood, which fact might be pleaded in extenuation.It Is not so very long since they drove a party of purity to pigs’ feet and beer, THE COMMONS BEGIN.LE The Commons **curtain-raiser” to the real engniry into the Drummond County Mifair has taken the stage, The audience does not seem to have comb in yet, being detained at a thrilling Yukon romance in another part of the building ; twenty-five sohools showed 158 scholars who had become communicants, a decrease of twenty-six, and thirty-eight schools reported 638 scholars.who were communicants.giving a decrease of 132.It was suggested that the pastors should take a deeper interest in Sunday Sohool work, and that more care should be taken in the training of teachers.The amount raised by the schools was 88741, being an increase of $92.and it was considered that taking all in all, the school work of the past year was very encouraging.SCHOOLS VISITED.Colonel Fraser presented his report upon hls visitation of the Sabbath Schools of the Presbytery of Montreal, Out of a total of ninety-one schools, e:ghty-three had been peraonslly visited in session, and reported in writing.Abont fifty per cent.of these sohools closed in winter, largely as a matter of habit.In the country the schools were held in the church just before or after the service.resulting in crowding the time, but this conld not well be helped.Regarding libraries and papers.it was found that about one-third of the schools had neither one or the cther, and consequently old books and papers would be most acceptable.very large number of papers and helps pub- .by Cook were.being Bibles were found to WR lacking.The report concluded by impressing the necessity of a greater interest in Sunday school work and in the memor- tsing of the Bible and the Catechism instead of outside formal teaching.RECOMMENDATIONS MADE.‘In connection with these reports” the following recommendations were moved and adopted : “That all Sunday-schools nse as iar as practicable the Sunday-school helps of our own church; That superintendents or some influential officer in each school, make it a point of duty or privilege, to be the firat at the Sunday- school, and to be able to meet all acho- lars with a hearty greeting.Seeing that Suonday-schools are an integral part of the church, sessions should take a greater supervision over them and a greater Interest in them; that superintendents and teachers try as far ns possible to discourage the use of helps n schools, and encourage the use of Bibles: that the visiting committee be continued; that the Sunday-school committee be approached with a view of the preparation of the Normal class Text Books for use of teachers’ meetings; that every effort be made to extend the home department of the Sun- day-school.HOME MISSION REPORT.In the nbsence of Prof.Ross, Rev, Mr, Fleck submitted the Home Mission report.This dealt with the missions at Mountain, Joliette, De Sala- berry, and Arundel, Lost River and Lake View, Mille Isles, Cote St, Gnb- riel and Shawbridge, Avoca and Harrington, Laprairie and Petite Cote, Trout River and Burke.La Guerre and Port Lewis, and Farnham.Most of these places showed a favorable report, and in nearly all instances it was re commended that the miniaters be re- retained, Matters were progressin smoothly and nothing unusual hs transpired.FRENCH EVANGELIZATION.The Rev.Mr.Heine read the report of the French work, entering into ‘details in regard thereto.The matter waa thoronghly discussed and arrangements were made for missionaries for various charges and grants for the sustenance of the same were made.ASSEMBLY COMMISSIONERS.Commissioners to the General Assembly elected as follows, by rotation : .R.Giroux, Dr.Amaron, y Hevs.Dr.MacVicar, Jas.Fieck, Dr.McDonall, Prot.Ross, Dr.R.Cam hell J.R.G.us.Heine and ay.The following ers were e¢lect- commissioners to the General Assembly: ohn Younie, Walter Paul, Wm.Brodie, David Morrice, son, Dr.Kelley, Geo.Loye, D.Torrance Fraser, VW An- m.derson, Wm.sdale, W.H.Gibson, James Rodger Ton Gebbip and W.D.MacLaren | EVENING SESSION, Immediately upon the of t sveting session, it was moved By i pal MacVicar and seconded by Prof.fr int le Lg oe Pe tery, uestion ibition, protaie- d by the t should omit.ed .M ¢ * Robb Colin acÂr thur, James he and.A QUICK CURE FOR COUGHS AND COLDS Very valuable Remedy in all affections of the THROAT, or LUNGS] DAVIS & LAWRENCE CO., Limtted Prop's.of Perry Davis’ Pain-Killer LR) MONTREAL MICROSCOPICAL SOCIETY LECTURES.NATURAL HISTORY HALL, FRIDAY, March 11th, Prof.A.W.MACBRIDE, M A.BR.“Siar-Fish and Sea Urchlus : Their habite and ory.MONDAY, March 14th, Pref.JAMES T.DONALD, M.A, “The Microscope in Commerce: Chemical Analysis.” These lectures will be illustrated by Lantern- Microscope.+ .The Public are cordially invited.Admission The Patent Felt Mattress.full size, $15.00, ° in signalent, durability an and thousands of institutions pied the do measure), and the name of your rere! will be delivered at your «loor THEATRE FRANCAIS W.RB.PHILLIPS, Leases an à Manager.Week of March 7th.# Re" RIENDS! = 0.K.SATO,Tr4 rontertal Prices, 10, 20 & 35e.Boxoficeopen 10s.m.t0 10pm, 53%8 { | COMING.Miss Jessie.Alexander.Only appearance this Bpring in entirely new pro- Douglas Hall, Chomedy street, Thursday Hvening, March 10th.TUPI NEXT on charge, and if not y "of thirty days fre trial, we eye auf refund your inoney.The Alaska Feather & Down Co., { Limited, 290 GUY EBT, 9 *zawtt q STR ontresl, P.Q.te ously, and a copy will be forwarded to the Government immediately.;
