How slowly ihe hands moved! The minutes seemed hours to her in her anxiety.A newspaper-boy came to offer her newspapers; but she shook ber bead.the dared not buy a paper, lest, she should see what she dreaded in it; she dared not chanoe it, knowing that her strength would not be equal to the shock. If once the hope of being useful to Stephen deserted her, she felt that her strength would fail her.It was this hope which was bearing her up now, strengthening the weak limbs, nerving her to the task she had set herself to perform. One ortwo gentlemen glanced at the beautiful pale face of the weary- looking woman as they sauntered up and down the platform; and, rather nervously, Sidney pulled down‘ her veil again, and went back to the waiting- room.‘Train after train came in with freights of travellers, and | o porters hurried hither; cabs drove off Joaded, or dashed up to the station with tardy travellers; trains left the station which Sidney looked after longingly, wishing the time would pass and struggling against her anxiety aud suspense as best she could. How slowly the time went bv! The minutes were leaden-footed and crept along, the hours were laggards and would not pass.Would twelve o'clock never come? Why, it would be nignt when she got to Ashford- too late for anything, too late for Stephen to make preparations, too late for safety! Twelve o'clock came at last, and, with a sigh of relief which was almost a sob, Sidney rose and left the waiting room. She was trembling so much that she could hardly steady her voice sufficiently to ask for her ticket, and she fancied that the booking-clerk looked at her suspiciously.as he asked her hurriedly whether she wanted a return ot à single ticket. She had to repeat her answer twice before she made him understand that she wanted a single ticket, and she wondered if he noticed how her fingers were trembling as she took up the ticket, ; It was an intense relief to find herself at last alone in a carriage and the train on the point of departure, She had to change twice, the guard told her, and she would have a long wait at one of the stations; but she was on her way at last—at last! 1t began to snow soon after they left the outskirts of London, and as the day wore on, it came down more and more thickly, At Bishops- town, where Sidney had to wait, the snow lay thickly on the station roofs and on the surrounding country, and her heart sunk with fear as she thought that the train might be delayed by snow-drifts, and that she would not reach her destination that night. She was cold and weary and faint ; but she never thought of obtaining any refreshment, although Bishopstown station was a large one and there was a refresh- ment-room to which most of the passengers hastened as soon as they left the rain.Sidney sat by the waiting-room window, longing to go on her way once more. The train came up, its red lights gleaming, its carriage-roofs white with snow.Sidney hastened, us fast as her trembling limbs would allow her, to the nearest carriage.and got in stumbling- iy and awkwardly in her agitation. One entleman was its occupant; he was eaning back in one corner of the carriage, his coat well pulled up about his ears, and he was reading by the light of a little travelling lamp, which threw its light upon his book, and upon the grave handsome, rather worn face.He did not glance up from his book as Sidney ot into the compartment of which he n sole possessor.Apparently his fellow-traveller had no interest for him ; and it Was only when the door had been shut and the train was once more on its way that Sidney glanced over at the quiet absorbed face, and then à little cry—half of joy, half of fear—broke #from her.She held out both her little trembling hands toward him, uttering his name—** Stephen l’— and then sunk forward, half swooning half sobbing, at his feet, CHAPTER XXXVL For a moment Stephen Dauht was so overcome with surprise at the unexpected appearance of his wife that, without movin be stared at her over his book, half uncertain whether he was not dreaming, whether he had not fallen asleep in the carriage and conjured up ihe beautiful pale face of the woman who was rarely absent from his thoughts ; but the surprise was only momentary, and gave place to alarm a8 he saw how terribly agitated she was, how the little trembling hands clung to him for a moment and then fell away in their weakness, how the slender form quivered and shook like one stricken and wounded unto death.Stephen Daunt had all a man’s—and’ an Englishman's-—horror of scènes, and since his marriage he had had enough andtospare.Life had been quite atragic business, he thought wearily, ever since that June morning when he had made Sydney his wile,” It was not her fault, poor child, since, 80 long as she had been well, she had been calm and languid and self-pos: as a queen; but there had been that scene in the waiting-room at Ling which bad preceded her serious illness; and now, when he thought her safe in Brighton with his aunt and Dolly, she made an unexpected appearance in a railway compartment of which—tortun.ately, most fortunately-—~he was the only other ocoupant. All these thoughts passed like lightning through hs brain, as, lifting her ten erly in bis 8, he placed her upon the cushions of the carriage, and still holding her within his arm, tried to soothe her with a few gently-spoken words, But all power of self-control had deserted her; the intense relief she felt at sight of her husband safe and free as yet, the self-repression she had exercised so long, which had cost her such an effort, the agitation, the long night's vigil, the anxiety and suspense, had broken her down; she could not have spoken a word to save her life or Stephen’s.She lay back against the cush- lons, supported by his arm, sobbing, gasping, trembling, and exhausted, ghting against her emotion as best she could, poor child, because she knew it woul painful and distressing to him, but utterly Poyeriess to overcome it, She was n weeping; there were no tears in the great burning eyes or on the pale cheeks, and the sobs were great dry choking sobs which shook the slender frame within his arm with a force which seemed as if it must kill her; “You are afraid of us,’ squeaked the little man.*You foolish child, don’t you know we lived in this house and this stove long before you were born, — before your mother and father were born?” “How could you live so long and not row a bit?’ ventured Gretelein, under er breath.“We had something else to do,—we bave to make everybody else grow; we are your househola elves; we work, ob, how hard we do work over you, even at night; we have to rack our poor brains to supply you with dreams; you are such an unreasonable set, you mortals, that you have to amu even when you are asleep! Here, Dreams, wakeun! It is almost night, time Lo begin work. Two drowsy little elves rolled froman obseure corner, and sat up rubbing their eyes; one was a dreamy-faced, fair- haired little fellow, the other looked in a surly way from under a pair of black brows, lle had a strange, white, terri.tied look, and crept timidly behind his brother.‘’Fhese,” said the elf-king, ‘are Dream and Nightmare, starting out on their night's work.” (Giretelain was next attracted to a lively group in a corner.Foremost among them stood the queerest little man, with such a comical twist to his mouth, and black merry eyes, that Gretelein laughed in spite of herself.“That,” said the elf-king, Lo Jokes, and that little chap, next to bim is Laughter, and after Dream and Night mare are through with jou, before your eyes are fairly opened, Jokes jumps into your ear, and Laughter perches himself in the corners of your mouth, and such a whisk as he fives it.The little tellow hiding behind there, looking rather ashamed, is Mischief. But sometimes that scowling group in the other éorner get ahead of this one. That little imp no bigger than your thump- nail is Cross-patch.He 1s dreadfully troublesome and hard to get rid of, when he once fastens on you.’ “Iie fastened on Marie, yesterday,” said Giretelein, ‘and 1 ought not to have blamed her so much, for afterall it was not her fault, but that little imp’s.” *Hoity, toity! not so fast, little maiden; if Marie had resolved that Cross.patch should leave, Cross-patch would have had to go.None of my elves ever stay where they are not wanted. Some are nore easily frightened off than others. The ugher the imps are the hter they hold, but the worst of them.can be shaken off. There,” he continued, “is a set that are hard to get rid of when once they take hold.Thatis Jealousy, and that Envy: that miserable starveling is Selfishness, and that horrid toad is Gluttony.Cretelein shrank in dismay from these wretched little elves, and wondered how anybody could alllow them to fasten on them.Suddenly Gretelein’s attention was arrested by a radiant little elf floating above au the others.“Oh, w beautiful, how beautifn! if you think of the number of the house and the name of the street whenever you think of his home you will never forget it.It is this habit of tying one idea or fact to another that enables some persons to remember quickly, and any one can fr lls this habit who will persevering.ollow this simple rule. One word here about reviewing what you learn. There is no surer way of finding out how much you don't know of what you think you know than by mentally * taking stock ” every now and then, Once or.twice a year merchants go carefully over their stock of goods and learn just how much they have on hand. They know then not only what they have in stock, but what they have soid and what they need. The next best thing to knowing what you perfectly remember is to tind out what you have forgotten or never knew, A peculiarity of memory is that the more it is u the stronger it becomes.Whoever makes proper use of his memory seldom has occasion to find fault with it.Youth is the time when it is most plastic, and when the most lasting.impressions can be made upon it.For this reason care should be taken that it is trained and strengthened in a sensible way so that it will prove a ready help in after-lif A QUEER DENTIST.A little Ametican boy who has a vet turtle, made it do a queer thing a little while ago.One day Philip—that's the name of the noy—found that one of his teeth was getting loose. He has never had but one set, and a second crop of teeth is beginning to push the first crap ou Philip's mother was away.He could pot wait for ber to come back.thought it was important that this loose tooth should come out at once.So he went to the maid and asked to have a thread tied around the loose tooth. She did not wish to do it at tirst, but at last consented. Then Philip fastened thre other end of the thread to a hale in the shell of the turtle.‘The turtle walked off into the grass.Philip braced bimself and stood stock still. In a minute the queer little dentist had pulied the tooth oat.SOME EBOOY.sormetoo7 és à goiden deed: somebody proved a frtend in peed; farmers from getting into the markets with ss ik] a it : ê 6 their produce. It le ‘also the reason whef the country merchants are about taking stock, and do not care to Increase their bold until this is done. However, the condit) of the country is such that with & roads and fine winter weather, there should be a brisk revival in business just before the Christmas holidays.Farmers and others will, no doubt, be to hear of the British Government's action in removing the embargo from Cana~ dian cattle shipped to the British markets. It will hardly be as pleasing to the British agriculturist, Who views the ever-increasing imports of live and dead stock from abroad as one of the main reasons of his present embarrassments and keeping down oi prices. There is no doubt that the outlook for the British farmer at the moment is not a cheer ing one.Enormous transatiantic supplies have had a crushing effect on the stock market, and prices have ruled so low as to almost make cattle breeding as unprofitable to the English farmer as the growing of wheat. The stock and bond markets during the week bave been depressed In all of the world’s leading centres, and to prudent specuiatora the outlook is far from encouraging. The probable failure of the sliver conference Ca! a feeling of deep distrust in London and Europe which is reflected on this side of the Atlantic.Railway securities have felt the depression more than others. In this connection the Railway Age has prepared some very telling statistics which make curious reading to the outsider.Of all the stocks dealt in on the New
