Night.[SPECIAL TO TUE STAR] WooDSTOCK, November 14.— Reginald Bir- chall, convicted on the 29th of September of the murder of Frederick C.Benwell, In Blenheim Swamp, In February last, was, in accordance with the judgment of Judge McMahon, hanged in the gaol yard here this morning. The excitemeut in the town last night was intense, all the hotels being crowded with people expecting to gain admission to the gaol yard.An idea of the widespread interest taken in thecase can be derived from the fuct that no less than flity reporters representing the leading papers of Canada and the United States ars here Birchall kept up his spirits last night as urual, discussing the hangman, whom he calls “THE PROFESSOR,” with hls guard.Mr.Perry.Just as twilight was setting down last night the lust work wus done on the scaffold.J.R.R.Radclive, Lhe hangman, superintended the work. The scaftold wus close up in the north-east corner of the west yurd of the gaol.It was of simple construction. Two smooth- planed timbers, squared, six inches thick, and seventeen foel long, were sunk three feet in the ground, leaving fourteen leet above ground. One timber was set six feet from the end wall, the other seven feet farther along. Both timbers were In line, and four feet from the side wall.On top of these upright thinbers was morticed a horizontal timber of the same thickness of scantling, fastenwvd to the wooden coping of the top of the wall and to the horizontal timber, holding the structure firmly. In the centre of the aevon-foot spare of the upper timber was #finle. The rope, passing up through ® hole, ran over two iron pulleys and down through another hole {n the six-foot space. The 35U-POUND IRON WEIGHT was lifted by pulleys attached to the under- top of the horizontal timber, brought to within about two leet of the beum and there fastened. Then the end of the rope wus attached to the weight and the rope was given a slack near the weight of 2 or 3 feet. The hangman explained that, having previously placed the condemned mun La position and adjusted tbe noose, was to take up his position behind him.A latch or bolt, which reieased the weight, had attached to 1t a rmall rope, whieh reached to the ground, und this the hangman took in his hand. The position of the condemned man was to be with bis back to the side wall, and fronting the spectators. He was to stand near Lhe inner up- rlght timber, the noose adjusted with the knot under his leit ear.At tne signal the hangman pulled his cord, the latch sprang open, and the weight dropped.“Do you prefer
