Attempt to Blow up London Bridge-—-Very Little Damage Done— No Clue to the Perpetrators, LoNDos, Lec.14, 6 am.— Beyond the undoubted fact that an attempt was made to blow up London bridge the police bave absolutely no information of the affair. It is bow supposed that dynamite was dropped over the bridge and alighted on a buttress. The damage done consists chiefly of broken windows În bouses iu the vicinity of the bridge.Al eye-witness, a bootbluck, says he was cleauing a gentleman's boots, when suddenly he felt the earth shake about him, and immediately afterwards there was a territic explosion and he was stunned. When he recovered consciousness the gentleman bad disappeared. The, buttress ou which the explosives alighted was only slightly daw- aged.Persons who were crossing the bridge at the time were thrown down.Mauy gas jets in the vicinity were extinguished by the concussion.DETAILS OF THE EXPLOSION.The explosion occurred at 5 o'clock on Saturday evening. The police think a buat cuntaining explosives was allowed to drift oncath the bridge with burning fuse attached to them.Ap eye-witness says the flames shot up simulianeously from each side of the bridge, showing thaï the fuse had been nicely timed to cause an explosion when balf way bepeath the bridge.A careful inspection of London bridge was made to-day and :t was found that no structural fnjury whatever was done.Nothing could be found about the bridge to indicate that an explosion had taken place. The police bave discovered nothing as to the origin of the explosion.Heads of detective departments were conferring with the home office during the entire day.Absence of any clue is paralyzing the action of the police, who are even unable to tell the nature of the explosive used.It appears that the explosiun occurred nearer the Surrey eud of the bridge than was at first supposed, and vet most of the huuses daum- aged were on the Middlesex side, where the windows wero smashed as far as Billingsgate market.Several panes of glass were broker in Fishmongers’ hall, but otherwi-e the buildings received no damage, Several squares of the lofty glass screwn in the Cannon street depot fell to the platform with a crash, greatly terrifying the passengers in the building, although nobody was injured.River traffic was suspunded at the time of the explosion vwing the darkness. The ex- plosiou forms the one topic of cunversation.Thousands of persons visited the scene today.STORIES OF EYE-WITNESSES.A policeman who was standing on the steps leading to the steamtbwat pler on the Suriey side, with bis back to the river, says he saw a blinding glare like a sheet of lightning, which was followed by a territic report. He was almost stunned, and his helmet was blown some yards away by the concussion. He ran to the police station, gave the alarm, and soon afterwards the river police were making as minute an examination as sible of the buttresses of the bridge and wharves on each bank of the river. The search, however, was fruitless.Daylight showed that Dot a single stone had been displaced by the shock.Experts are unanimously of opinion that tbe explosive used was thrown over the bridge and exploded in the air or on striking the water.Towards noou, a wbarfer informed the police that a few minutes befors the explosion he saw a boat containing three men under the arch on the Surrey side.He took no particular notice of them, thinking they were revenue police, and did not see the boat afterwards. The police this afternoon learned that a piece of charred sacking about a foot and a ball square bad been found on «ne of the buitresses, and are now of opinion that the explosive was placed there. They attribute the smaliness of the dam to the extraordinary air currents beneath the span.No arrests have been made.Several persons passing over the bridge say a column of water was thrown to 8 great height by the shock.A number of persons were drenched.A THEORY AS TO THE CAUSE.The Obarrrer says the explosion seems to belong tothe ordinary category of dynamite outrages with which recent experiences have made Englishmen unhappily tatmiliar. It wus a perlectly useless crime, and led to po practical result beyond destroving a certain aizount of masonry. It was not attended by loss of life, yet it is obvious the perpetrators must have anticipated the possibility of a number of innocent human beings being subjected to sudden aud cruel death. The crime therefore partakes of the character of murder.Itisdifficult to conceive what possivle end or purpose the authors of such outrages hope to attain.lbe utter absence of co- relation between cause and effect mainly confirius the theory that these crimes are of Hibernian origin.NO LIGHT.LoNDoN, Dec.15.lhe newspapers throw no light oo the explosion.lhe Te ph says: “The newest Fenian outrage” falls far below its predecessors in actual mischief, Some incline to the belief that gunpowder, pot dynamite, was used.It is noteworthy that Saturday was the anniversary of the Clerkenwell explosion. The windows of the building ot Rollins Æ Co, American merchants, suffered severely.A customs offirer states that after the explosion Le observed a small steam launch pass at a high rate of speed down the river.Strangely enough, at the time of the explosion an inspector and two constables were watching the bridge from a boat.a precaution which had been adopted nightly for the past two years. They saw nothing to excite fears and made a minute search after the explosion, but could discover nothing. Some witnesses saw three distinct flashes.Several horses drawing heavy loads were thrown to the ground.Engine drivers sitting in à shed in Cannon street were blown from their scats.A bumber of detectivrs recently withdrawn from sporial duty have been ordered to return to London and resume work.Precautions at railway depots in regard to the receipts of parcels have been resum EGYPTIAN AFFAIRS.The Nile George James Foley, 26, machinist, St Charles Borromee street; Richard Davis, 22, printer, Point St.Charles, dergeaut Nelly Low, 18, no occupation.native ol Newmar- ket; Hattie Yerex, 29, nu occupation, native of County Victoria. The prisoners instead uf being configed in the celis like ordinary law breakers were placed in the detectives’ private office, under the charge of a policeman.A short time after the arrest a number of prominent citizens arrived at the station anxious 10 bail the prisoners out, but before consenting to du this Chief Paradis inler- viewed the Recorder. His Honor acquiese- ing in the proposed release, the prisoners were set free on bail being furnished by Messrs.Wm: Clendenning and George Armstrong.and proceeded to their lodgings. In the meantime a meeting bad been held in the Weber Hall, conducted by Captain Lewis, a young lady of decidedly prepossessing appearance and with no lack of self possession, and Cadet Murray, equally fascinating in her appearance, but evidently less comior- tabie in public than her superior officer. These young ladies are the garrison which it is inteuded to leave in Moutreal, while those who went out on the street and were arrested are & field force who after having secured a position for the army here will return to headquarters at Kingston. The hall vas crowded, and with the exception of some slight interruption fromsome irresponsible voungsters excellent order was preserved.Such a service was never seen before In Montreal, but although it was unique it was by no means the ridiculous buriesque which many bad expected.A novel feature, which at once forced itself upon thuse unacquainted with the operations of the Salvation Army was the management of a religious meeting by women.Captain Lewis officiated as mistress of ceremonies, with a business like, off hand manner which appeared directly coutrary to the instincts of one used to the deenrum of public worship as practised in the churches ot even the simplest denominations.Prayers of a peculiarly original order and of decided torce were followed without any cessation by hymns sung in many cases to popular secular airs, but without any regard to time or tune, As to the verses they were g nerallv simplv doggerel of the most pronounced type, and as a general thing tbe sentiment was conveyed in a manner which to many people appeared ridiculous, it nut downright sacrilegious. The bymn in its turn would be followed by a stirring speech hy either of the officers or by some ontreal friend. If by the ladies, in such haste did they appear to be that a couple of sentences of the s h would be delivered before 1he concluding clause of the chorus of the preceding hymu had been sung, and the next hvmn would be begun and well under weigh before the speaker had time to take up her hymn book The contents of this missive, thousands of the copies of which were yesterday solid at ten cents each, give a fair idea of the striving for effect at the expense of rhvme or orthodoxy, which characterizes the productions of the army. One of the most startling features of the morning's service was the singing of a hymn, “Iam Lhe Son of the g" to the air of “The Pirate Kinz.” from ‘The Pirates of Penzance.” Two verses of one of the hymns supg were as follows: We wear the shield and "8a." Bome people ray we're mad”; The tambourines are dreadful, The cornets quite as bad, The Hallelujah dresses Are really quite a sight, The Hallelujah bonnets mako The lasses look a fright.A gem from another hymn is as fallows : Bome say we Are fanatics, and ail gone mad; But they are quite mistaken, it's Jesus makes us glad.Once we were in bondage, but Jesus sets us free, And that's what makes us happy, don't you see.The speeches, lika the hymns, were bawled out in a painful manner at the top of the singers’ voices.Apart from this these discourses might have done credit to the pulpit of any Evangelical Church tn the city. They were terse, generally grammatical, although sometimes not so, and delive from end to end without the slightest hesitation.Every speaker pointed out that the work of the army is entirely non-sectarian and nothing was said that could injure the feelings nf the must sus- œptible of any denomination.n the afterusën another meeting was beld, and still Another tn the evening. On the laiter occasion the hall was packed to the doors, and a couple of thousand could not gain admission. At so early hour jn the proceedings an organized disorderly element developed itself, and before long aj prared undisguised as an overbea mob.hiskey bottles were brought up, and their contents drunk in view of ladiesand children who were present. The most blasphemous oaths were uttered, and the efforts of Capt.Madden and his ple were t y unequal to restoring order. Finally, the doxology was sung, and the meeting broke up.A revolting scene then began, which resulted in chairs and windows being broken. The police were asked to furnish protection, but did not arrive until the row was over. The Cattle Yards. The injunction taken by Mr.Lingham against Acer & Kennedy to.restrain them and Mr.Bickerd:ke from disposin of any moneys iu connection with the caitie of Point St.Charles has been dieminced the Court holding that the alleged pool never been recognized by the partners.General Albert Pike, though seventy-five years old, bas Just made an extendod tour through Texas and vas everywhere beartil received. The old man still persists in * ways appearing in Confederate gray, Mr.Gladstone and the Lords.Fo the Editor of THE STAR: Sr, —1 respectfull y uest you to insert at your convenience in the columus of THE STAR the following comments on a brief edi- forial which appeared in your issue of the t.: The subject matter under review has an exclusive reference to the threatened oollis- ion betwixt the two Houses of Parliament in BF STAR alleges that the conflict has end- od “in the triumph of the democracy and the overthrow of the Peers.” Allusion is made to a‘ compromise.” This presupposes cou- ns on each side.Notwithstanding, it is said, that ‘the result can scarcely be otherwise than humiliating to Lord Salisbury, and to Gladstone satisfactory.” Now, strict adherence to the provisions of the compromise will solve.the problem.Lord Salisbury did not get all he wanted, but he t 50 much as in some measure to satisfy is party.Mr.Gladstone, on the other hand, saw the propriety of concession in order to avoid grave responsibilities. The House of Lords from the outset refused to the Franchise bill until tbey had some knowledge of the contents of the Redistribution bill.Mr.Gladstone's promise to introduce the latter bill soon after the Racing of the former bythe House of Lords d-pot meet the reasonable demands of the Upper House.Hereupon (a deadlock staring parties in the face) a confereuce took place—a select audience, consisting of Gladstone and Salisbury. The result was not an “overthrow” or ‘‘humiliation,” but an agreement more or less satisfactory lo tn.Hence, I question the propriety ot tue observation o! ‘THE STAR: * He (Gladstone) has forced the Lords to pass the Frauchise bu 1 und ; HE STAR, in the paragraph under review, informs its readers that the Radicals “are sulking in their teuts.” Why are they sulking if it be true that the House of Lords has been overthrown? They sulk because the see no prospect of its being overthrown. It is perfectly textual to quote a sentence from Bir Joba Macdonald at a meeting of the Beacoustield Club in London, which [ am gratified to find in THE STAR of same date: “luna young country like they could not as yet bave an hereditary House of Lords, but probably about the time when it was being abolished in England it would be adopted in Canada." Now, sir, as a reader of THE STAR of some standing, I aiimire its enterprising spirit, the freshness of its news, and its popularity with its tens of thousands. It professes to be independent.A jouroalist with such a creed and with such an enormous circulation can well afford Lo be accommodating as Well as independent. It is no business of mine to point to the danger of sailing betwixt Scylla and Charybdis; an expert pilot is needed, and THE STAR is in possession of one, but there cau be no innovation upon its diguity or impairing of ita usetulness when it coudescends to publish in its columns the well meaning comments on men and mnan- Bers by i HTGH NIVEN.Personal Notes The first recoguition of Cleveland’s election by a Government officer came in a request from the bureau of prinung and engraving for bis photograph. It is proposed to engrave his portrait to put with those of the otter presi ents in the Guvernment exhibit at the New Orleans exposition.Mr.Spurgeon believes that there is no harm in smoking. He said in a sermon the other day that if anybody can «how him in the Bible the comwand, * Thou shalt not smoke,” he will keep 1t."1 flad ten commandments,” be said, “and it's as much as I can do to keep them; I don't think smoking makes me ashimed, and therefore 1 mean to smoke.” Genagal Sherman, in reply to a question as to whether be iutended to answer the letter of Jefferson Davis, recently published, said that Mr.Davis had not addressed him, but the St.Louis Republican, and that if he made any reply it could only be through the War Department. He has most of his Louisiana papers, he said, to make good his assertions that the civil war was forced upon the people ot Louisiana by conspirators in Washington, ana that during the progress of the Rebellion Ar.Davis ch ed his views of the doctrine ol secession, and threatened to use force in case any State of the Confederacy should attempt what was then known as ‘‘separate State action.” Buchanan Read's m describing Sheridan's ride from Winchester is said by a friend of the latter to have become the bane of his existence. In the popular mind, that little jaunt ue horseback is his only achieve- went.‘Ine rest of bis allant services have been thrown into oblivion, so far as the knowledge of the masses is concerned.Women especial 1 sorry him almost cr on the subject. He is bound, in common lite: ness, to answer their questions about it, and unosumbered are the albums in which he has been compelled to write à verse of the poem over his signature. He used to decline to do this, on the ground tnat it was not modest, but be found that his scruples were not ap- precia.d, and so he now scribbles a couplet which glorifies the horse only, with no mention of the rider.St.George’s Church. The choristers of the above church, numbering over forty, had an excgrsion to Ottawa on Saturday.A dinner was tendered tnem at the New Temperance Club, after which the Parliament buildings were visited.Tue ‘party returned to this city by the 4.30 n Condolence. At a meeting of the Montreal branch of the Irish National League yesterday, resolutions of condolence were passed relative to the death of the late A.M.Sullivan, ex- M.P.for Meath, ireland. The resolutions were entered on the minutes of the branch and ordered to be published in the press.CITY ITEMS.-The annual retreat for the men of St.Bridget parish was opened yesterday evening at-7.15 o'clock.Rev.Father Pichou, S.J., will preach the whole we ek.—At the communion service, held in St Mark's Presbyterian Church, yesterday, sixteen new members were formally admitted by the tor, the Rev.J.Nichols.—A most successful entertainment was held in the Lachine Town Hall, on Saturday evening.choice programme, including tableaux, recitations, etc., was thoroughly enjoyed. The soirée was in aid of St.Ste- pheñ”s Church.Beaver Lodge, No.8, 1.O.O.F., Point St.Charles, have now completed the erection of their new ball, and on Thursday evening next will dedicate the sama. The building is a spacious two-story solid brick structure, and will be 8 great convenience to the many societies meeting 1n that locality.— The regular fortnightly meeting of the Kt.Paul's Church You en's Association will be held in the school room of the church this evening.A paper on Canadian history will be read by Mr, W.G.Kinloch, sub, “The U.E.Loyalists.” In addition to the paper there will be a programme of musle.—The following are the newly elected officers of Zetland Lodge, No.12, A.F.and A.M.: Bro.John Becking] m, W.M.; lake exvep- tion, and there is a great deal of good counsel, which cannot tail to commend itself to Protestant and Catholic alike.WE are glad to s*e that tue Government 18 taking active steps for the suppression of the St.Stephen Lottery swindle. If the St.Stephen rascals who have been fleecing our Americon cvusinssolony can be brought to justice, we in Canada shall gain in char- “acter although we shall lose sornewbat in pocket, in the shape of posial reveuue.Ihe financial gain will be across the border, where all the victims of the fraud were found.ALDERMAN FAIRBAIRN bas a motion which bas been standing upon the City Council's orders of the day for a very long time, to the effect that all civic contracts for longer periods than one year be submitted to the vote of the municipal electors. The proposition is an admirable one; there ought to be but few contracis made for a longer period than one year, and on thesa the tax payets should certainly bo allowed the privilege of voung.Had Alderman Falrbairn’s motion Leen adopted, tho City Passenger Railway problem would be much simplified. As it is we hope Ald.Fairbairn will mova that the By-law be submitted tothe popular vote for ratifleation. We are curious to see who among the aldermen who boast so much that they have the support of their constituents will vote against a motion to allow the citizens to decide for themselves in a matter of such importance.mn THE practice of looking for a lesk in the gus pipe with the aid of a lighted candles not so expensive as the dynamite war being waged on the pertidious Saxon, but it is far more deadly apd destructive.Gas has now been in use for illuminating purposes nearly a hundred years and still there are lots of wople who use gas laily aud have yat to earn that itis as :langervus as it is useless : lcok for a gas leak with a lighted candles an it be possible that these people never ead and uvever hear of disasters through his practice. One would have thought the explosion on Fort strest a few weeks ago would have been sufficient tor Montreal for some time to come.1louseholders who use gas should see that their servants and all the members of their families understand the pature of gas and the great danger of takiog a flame into au at.nosphere charged with gas.Aud the Gas Company would find it ln its intorest to sco that the householders themselves understand something about gas.THERE is eviden ptly an amount of latent religious zeal ip the roughs of Montreal that one would hardly suspect from a casual uc- Quaintance. This zeal does not impel our friend the rough to be particularly constant in his attendance at mass or other raligious service. The only means of grace he cares to avail himself of is bullying ard brutalising old men and young women. For the methods of the Salvation Army or of Father Chiniquy we profess no admiration, but we do not believe anybody will go to heaven as a reward for throwing stones at Father Chiniquy or for hurling foul and unmanly insults at the young women with the tambourines. While such scenes are possible in Montreal the leas &e boast about our religious liberty the better. The zeal of the police nlso calls for some comment. The zeal of the pulice manifests ‘teelf quite as curiously as the zeal of the roughs, Perbaps the ‘‘Ka!vationists ” were breaking the law bv singing in Victoria Square and the police were justified in arresting them in order to protect the delicate sensibilities of the roughs who went to Vie- toria Square for tbe purpose of getting their delicate sensibilities shocked. But it the “Salvationists” were breaking the law in Victoria Square, they were clearly within their legal rights in Waber Hall and entitled to the protection of the police. Why was that protection not forthcoming?Extortion.Jo the Editor of THE STAR: ur Your report on ‘ Insurance” isPApt be (unintentionally) wisleading, as It pre the publiv to tolls will be regulated by the United States and collected by its officers. The United States has power to make whatever provisions she May deem necessary for the protection and defenco of the canal, House Filled With Rubbish, - With regard to the gas explosion which made such havoc in My.David's bouse esterday morning, the following particu- fare in addition to those already given have been learned. It appears that at about eight o'clock the servants noticed a smell of escaping gas in the basement, whereupon the groom, James Riley, proceeded from the kitchen, situated in the back of the building, to the larder, from which tho swell of gas appeared to be proceeding. He was closely foliowed by the cook, Margaret JHart, who carried a lighted candle. They had hardly entered t room when there was a flash followed by a tremendous explosion and the were knocked down by the flying ris.The occupants of the upper flats at once came down to find out the cause of the accident. They were met by a sight which for a time startled them, being one of the wildest confusion.Tbe cook was found lying prostrate on the ioor and a portion of the groom's y was seen rotruding from a mass of heaped up débria, rom which be was quickly extricated. The room wus filled with boards, furniture, etc.in a promiscuous heap, covered with broken plaster and splinters from which a blinding dust arcse. The kitchen, which immediste- ly adjoined, was little better, being strewn with shattered furniture and débris. The partition under the stairway ascending to the ground floor was torn down in toto and converted into a heap of ruboish, showing that the explosion must have been one of unusual severity. In the billiard room on the first flat, the ravages of the terrible shock were plainly visibie. The large billlard table was turned’ over on its side, and the remaining furniture was broken into pieces.Iuthe back parlor, a large marble pedestal, upon which rested a fiuely executed bust of Mr.David, was tossed across the room, and the valu piece of sculpture was smashed into atoms. The windows in the trunt of the bouse were all blown out, the porch was wrecked and the vestibule and nal! filled with pieces of glass and iragments of wood, aud plaster. The rear wall of the building was bulged out considerably and the skylight in the roof blown out, bestdes the upstairs furniture wus thrown about bere and there. As quickly as possible the Victitus of tue accident were conveyed to the General Hospital, It was found that, Riley, the groom, aged 30 years, was badly burnt about the face, neck ard hands, and was bruised in several places, among other things being cut on the face ôver tbe rigut eye.The cook, Margaret Hart, bu, was also burnt about the tace, neck and arms, and the: other servant, Lizze Townsend, aged 26, was bruised In several places, and also suffered considerably from the inhalation oi gas.The wounds in each case, although severe are not serious, and the victims were all doing well Just evening. The groom is unable to say what caused the explusion, as be was knocked senseless before be hud time to make any investigation.A constable from Station No.5 has been on guard at the house since the accident for toe purpose of restraining the curious who have locked to the scene in large numbers. The peighbors were very kind in extending thew hospitality to Mr.David's family.A STAR reporter called at the Gas Company 's office to-day, and learned that the explosion occurred from a defect in the gas pipes, which were of the old tomposition stamp. The flow was situated in a piece of the pipe which was exposed to view, and where there was a drop pipe for drawing off the condensed water. The conclusion come to is that this latter became filied with water during the night, which froze and burst the main pipe in the immediate vicinity. From the aperture thus occasioned, the gas escaped freely and soon filled the apartment, the explosion occuring us stated.1he heal generated by the explosion melted a large section of the pipe. The damage, it 15 rxpected, will pot exceed seven or eight hundred dollars. The Gas Company will oot be liable in avy way.Mr.Joseph, president of the company, states that there are still quite a unmber ot these old pipes in use in the city, and doubtless the public will be startled by further shocks of explosion if they are not done away with.-— THE SALVATION ARMY.A Plea for the Work, To the Editor of THE STAR: STR, -Some members of Army have made thejr ap ranoe amongst us, and have commèn their work in a characteristic way.be object of this letter ls not Lo discuss the desirabieness or otherwise of such laws as those by which our city is governed and under which they were apprehended yeatorday.Respecting this there IS a good deal to be said on both sides. The primary point for consideration is what object have these plo in viow? And why are they organi us an army? The first is the great question, and by the answer to it they must mainly be judged.Their organization and methods are secondary matters. The object they bave 1p view, as may be gathered from the writings of their leaders, are plainly these : They are aiming to overthrow wickedness, crime and wrongdoing in all their forms and developments.Where they succeed they make drunken men sober, and licentious men and women chaste. They attack no man’s creed. The enemy jthey attack is the devil.Their enemy is the commonenemy of all Christian people-—Catholic and Protestant alike —and the salvation which is their distinctive aim is a practical deliverance from tbe power of vice, crime, drunkenness, profligacy and misery. These it may be said are mere generalities. The same may be said of every Christian church and society.Very true, but they have selected for their special sphere of work, those whom the Christian church finds it the very hardest to influence, viz., the godless, the profane, the criminal, the men and women Who never go to church at all and who in ordinary circumstances are beyond its influence. An admirable ohject, sure What decent man or woman, be ho Catholle or Protestant, can help sympathizing with it?Are there none of this class in Montreal?Let the records of our Police Courts and the events of yesterday answer. But why are they organized as an army, and what is all this parapbernalia of uniforms, tambourines and such like? The answer is this: The method was adopted as an experiment who was devoting his claimi the masses of the vicious population who crowd the eastern districts of the metropolis of England, and its success bas justified Its continuance. There is po saving virtue in an army uniform.neither is there in marching thestreets and playing drums and tambourines. These are mere accessories, employed to strike attention and call the people.“These methods offend critical and educated people. No doubt they do.But the Salvationists do not address themselves to such poople. They aim at a different class altogether, and experience has shown that this class is not offended at all, but on the contrary attracted the Salvation if, then, the uniform and the music are not tho real sources of the puwer of tha movement, whence Is its power?! Having piid some attention to the matter, 1 say without hesitation that the source of its power is the plain, downright and earnest pressing home on beart and conscience of truths that all Christians hold in common.1 have suid they attack no man's creed. They preach repentance towards God and faith towards the Lord Jesus Christ They proclaim tbe trutbs found in the Apostics’ ‘reed in such a thoroughly earnest manner as to strike home aud carry convie- tion. The hymns they sing are lostinct with the same life and power, and might be sung by all Christien people. And wherever they have boen successful they nave turned wicked men to goud men, proflfigates and parlois into decent mernbers of society. This Dow.Thoso people deserve a hearing.Good men and women'of all creeds should bid them God speed.Wo may pot like their methods, but we cannot but like their end.11 they do in Montreal what they have done in Kingston, London and other places, it will be a blessing to the city.G.HAGUE.The Lachine Conflagration.AM the houses destroyed by the fire of the 4th of July last In Lachine have been rebuilt, and hat portion of the village now presents its old time appearance.Yesterday afternoon tho ruré of Lachine, Rev.N.Piché, ae- companied by Mr.D.Glirouard, M,P., and Mr.A.Hoyer, M P.P.for Jacques Cartier, and Messrs.L.B.Pigeon, Mayor of Lachine and the churchwardens of the parish, visited the new hutlding~ to Ascertain the resuits of of the publie subscription. The total subscriptions amounted to $6,129, the principal suberibers being Sir John A.Macdonald, ton.Dr.Ross, 1.Gtrmuard, M.P., A.Bover Mv?and Messrs.Dawes of Lachine, FROM KINGSTON.Heavy BSentence — Flogging Advocated — Farmers' Institute—Railway Extension.[SPECIAL TO THB GTAB.!
