DEATH.To ible Stampede on Broeklys Bridge —Twelyep Persons Killed and Twenty.Six Badly Isjured—Frighiful Scencs.New York, May 30.— Brooklyn Bridge has re- ocived a dreadful baptism to-day in the crush that ocourrod, apparently by acsident, on the New York anchorage.A number of persons, mostly women and children, were crashed, some to death, some fatally, and still others severely.A scene of terror reigned for fully fifteen or twenty minutes that baflles deseription. When it was over cart leads of wounded aud orushed human beings were taken outat tho New York entrance.A small mountain of torn and abandoned clothing was gathered up by tho pelice. The aoc- cident ovecarred on the Now Yerk amchor- ago, where the solid s bottem of the middle footway ends and two flights of seven steps each, with an intermediate landing, lead up to the plank walk of tho span between the New York anchorage aad the tower, shortly after four o'clock. The bridge was erowdod frem one end to the other, so that there was hardly elbo room.4 A woman whe was asconding tho lower fight of stops stumbled aud foll on the landing. The crowd pressed upon ber and sho shrieked. The bridge officer, Frederick Richards, who was on thé plank walle above, seving her danger, elbowed his way to tho spot snd lifted her up.The crowd closed upon them both, and they went down. With a desperate effort Officer Richards got upon his foct ouco more, dragging tho womuo after him.Sho screamed again in dospair and fright, and the crowd above and below pressed toward the spot to discover tho eanse.FEARFUL BCEKES.Iinmodiately tho crush became fearful, those on the approach below the stairs were carried forward ia a solid mass. Many stumbled, enable to resist the pressure from behind. The crowd passed over them. The crowd coming from Brooklyn was earried to the edge of the stops and then over sud down upou the struggling mass bolow.A terrible struggle for life then began.Men and women fought with the strength ot do- spair against cach other.Escape was impossible with the prersure from both sides growing at every shout of anguish that went up from tho dying sud those who saw doath before their oyes.Fenr aud despair on one side and curiosity on the othor fought fer the mastery. The frightful crush was denser when, atter nearly fifteen minutes, a soore of militia mon of the 13th Regiment, led by Lieut llart amd Sergeants Coul- dock and Costello, marched ap the approach toward Brooklyn. The yells of the crowds attracted their attention.A WALL OF HUMAN BODIFS.At the foot of the steps, a wall of human bodies was piled up, and a dense mass sarged about it and in it.The soldiors saw two policemen vainly struggling against it.Sergeant Couldock took in the situation at a glance, and at his word of eom- maad his men scaled the fence and railroad track separating them from tbe footwaik, and wedging into the mass of people drove back the erowd as ce at she muszle of the guns.the Now York ent 1 - It foil back siightly, ond the military, following up the advantage gsincd, fomsed it back until the approach was oleared. Then forming frent adress the footwalk they provented the crowd trom passing back, whilo as many of their number ns couid be sparod ran teward the scene of the accident to help in extrieating the dead and saving the living, The alarm bad mesawhile been given at the bridge entrance and a goneral call for all hospital ambulance sent, and the police hurried from their stations, bosido the City Hall.” The firemen of the hook aud ladder eem- pany followed to aésist.” They found the situa: tion unaltered on the bridge, the crowd on the footwalk about the stops was constantly receiving docessions, and still pressing où and over the heap on the anchorago.THE DEAD AND DYING.The bodies of the dead and dying lay bere so frmly wedged together that to got Chem out was next to impossible; to beat back the crowd was equally impossible, and relief was possible only by making room for tho crowd to spread sideways. It was quickly done, willing hauds tore away the iron railing dividing the footway from the railway track on both sides, and dragged those who were pearast in the orush through %o the opon- ings.Room was made for the policemen to reach the frightful heap of human flesh, and tho work of clearing it away began. As s00n as a portion of the obstruetion war romovod from the stops the crowd was eased, anda porter was lot through to New York. The rest they forced back until all the bodies had been taken away, and then it was let through, and a body of policemen at the point of danger kept it from pressing there.Along the iron fenees on the footway, ou the railway track and on the carriages way on both sides of the bridge the dead and wounded were laid.EXTRICATING TRE DEAD.More than half a score wore dead when extri- eatod from the throbbing heap, and others were more or less: terribly injurcd. They lay six, eight or ten deep, those in the lower tier long dead. The clothes were torn from the body ef more than one in the sttempt te got them ont; all were batlers, many shoeloss, and on others the clothes bung ia rags.Five women, all dead, were trampled inte an woshapely mass. They wero taken from the bottem of the heap.Ome of them had been seen in the crush holding a soream- ing baby above the heads of tho crowd ss she herself weat down. Some men bad taken the baby, which was not found.Baby clething scattorod about gave en enough that weak infaots had boen in tho Wash.© woman whom Bridge Officer Richards had belped to hor feot at the boginning of the crush was saved.Richards ascapod death by dosporate efforts, OFFICRR RICHARDS’ ETORY.In speaking ef the occurrence Richards ssid there was no Sbance of restoriug order from the first ; that one first scroam wus the dosth kmell of many in the crowd, which grow at once utterly an- governable and se denso that movemout was im- - possible. The crowd, foroed by constant pressure nnd acceèsion from the Brooklyn side, wont ever the stairs like a cataract, and once started fell ll the walk lay piled with/the bodies te the height of the stairs, then went over and fell down beyond it.A dead Chinaman, Lee Sing, was taken from the bottoms heap.Carts were pressed into service on the Now York side as they arrived, and tho doad and injured hurried te the City Hall, whero they were laid in the polico station.Crowds of pie besieged the station and ambulances to lcarn the fate of missing ones.An ample force of police took possession ef the New York entrance aa soon as possible after the acol- deat. The middle footway was clesed to travel, and the current of those anxious to oroes was tamed into the down stream waggen way.Apparently no measures were taken at the.Brooklya end te stop travel fer at least a time.'
