impossible to obtain an entrance to the bridge.The polico had a hard time of it, and it was almost impossible to keep order at the box offices.The toll collectors were tired out.Many persons were pushed along by the crowd unable to get their change from the collectors and many others got through free.Colonel Roebling, the builder of the bridge, is a helpless invalid.It might also be said that he is almost a hopeless one.The bridge killed his father, who drew the first plans, even before it was well started.Ten years ago it almest killed the son, who has been .ical wreck ever simos, direction, though he could not be on the Fpot to see any of it dome.He could overlook it at a distance from an upper window of his home, where he sat pro in au invalid chair through the siow days, weeks, months and even years but that was all.The malady that prostrated him, so leng ago, and from which it is not likely that he will ever recover; was the same that cost some of the bridge laborers their lives, and made hopeless _ invalids of others, namely the caisson dissase.It was eaused by working in the compressed air of the caissons far under water, when the foundations of the bridge towers were being made.Col.Roebling could hardly be kept out of the caissons then.The work he had om hand was most difficult, and he wanted te overses evarythi hiroself.One day, bowever, he was pull out-almost dead.The terrible caisson di had attacked him.Doctors took bim in hand and managed to bring him through the erisis, but they could not restore@he power that had been destroyed.He does not expect now that it ever will be restored.His is all sight, and has been from the first prostration, but his body is a constant torment.His long battle has been truly a heroic one.THE «“SHICKLUNA™ doleful account of Canada as a field for emigration, and advising Scotchmen to stay at home.Mosquitoes, blizzards, low wages and costly’ living were some of the evils which he warned intending characterizes the [rish population of America has prevented them from blowing up English vessels in the harbor of New York.He added, however, that strong as the camel's back may be, a certain last straw will break iz ; and that if the authorities persist in openihg the Brooklyn Bridge on the Q@een’s birthday, thus doing honor to the oppressor of Ireland, he will not answer for it that Irish patience will hold out under the strain.Well, the bridge has been opened, and the act has not proved the last straw, but we hold that a man*who indulges in language of this kind should be placed in confinement forthwith.An unguarded remark before a judge will send a mau to prison for contempt of court.The court, however, only re- presenta the law, and here is a cass of direct contempt of the definite proportion to .the population.Thus.in Montreal and other cities, towns and incorporated villages, whatever the electors may do or leave undone, the number ot hotel and saloon licenses cannot exceed one for each two hundred apd fifty of the first thousand of the population, and one for each five hundred over one thousand of the population.Montreal has nowy we believe, seventy or eighty more saloon and hotel bars than the Dominion Parliament thinks necessary to supply her thirsty citizens, and next year seventy or eighty Montreal saloon keepers will.heve—sto- retire" NE] ay take it for granted that, seringa great reduclion has to be made, no ney applisstions can be entertained, but on the ‘other hand a humber of applications for renewals will have to be and the listening nations of Europe, who have been warned by cable, are waiting with their collective faces Llanched and their entire hair in preparation for rising on end at the firing of the first shot.The quarrel is one which ean ouly bo settled by bloodshed.There is uo reason to doubt that Mr.Gebhard informed Mr.Sanford that the latter was o liar.This information was not couveyed as a matter of news but as u matter of aggravation.Neither does it appear to have uud any relevancy to anything Mr.Sanford bad said.That geutlemun had remarked that be wight possibly call upon à lady, who for purposes of identification may be called Mrs.Smith.This was clearly a statelzent of fact.Given tho existence of Mrs.Smith and the existence of a variety of Suntord not hopeles:ly bedridden, aug the possibility that the latter might at some time call upon the former always exists.When Mr.Gebbard replied to tlis calm statement of an almost self-evident truth by calling Mr.Sanford a liar he simply illustrated the irrelevuncy of wrath, precisely as any angry man does when he intimates to his enemy that his existence illustrates a peculiar phase of the development theory.Mr.Gebhard's unmistakable intention was to aggravate Mr.Sanforu, and Le compietely succeeded.Mr.Sanford answered Mr.Gebhard's expectations by exhibiting aggravation in the shape of slapping Mr.Gebhard’s cheek.This appears to lave dissatisfied Mr.Gebhard, which was very uureasonable, since he had deliberately tried to aggravate the slupper.It must be re- wembered, however, that Mr.Gebhard's cheek is ane of his most important features, and he muy have considered that no one had a rizht to take liberties with it, ' Why Mr.Sanford did not box Mr.(iebhard’s ears in preference to slapping his cheek is a question which will occur to every one.There were the cars in question prominently before Mr, Sanford's eyes.He could not fail to pote their lofty and majestic proportions, aud could not have failed to Lut them had Le been so disposed.It is possible that, standing tn the awful shadow of these towering ears, Mr.Sanford’s vision was not cluur, and that he happened to hit Ai.Gebbard's cheek while aiming at, let us say, his chin However this may be, the tact that Mr.Gebhard's face was slapped was uudeniabze, and as a consequence blood must flow.Were Messrs.Gebhard and Sanford ordinary persons, of no partienlar gmporiunce, there would be no absolute 1tecessity of a duel ; bat, being as they are two of the most important personages on the continent, they must fight, It 1s pronable that in the last of our blood - thisty duels neither Mr, Benpett nor Mr, May really wanted to fizht, but they occupied positions so exalted that the eyes of the world were upon them, and the pressure of opinion among the crowned heads of kurope drove them inex- orabiy to the field.In the present instance, Mr.Gebhard doubtless knows that unless he fights Mr.Sautord, neither the Queen of Great Britain, the Fmpress of Austria, nor the Empress of Russia will ever invite him to their houses again, and the British Association and the French Academy will never again consult him as an authoriiy on nics questions of spell- Ing.As for Mr.Sauford, he 1s known all over the world as arepresentative American.Fath- era of Central African families say to their sons * Strive to grow up and imitate Sanford; and the Princess of Wales, in edncating her children, compels then to study a Lttie work written by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and entitled ¢¢ "Che Example ot Sauford.”” Such men as Messrs.Sanlord and Gebhard cannot be iree agents.They must meet the expectations which the world has [ormed of them, and one of those expectations 1s that they will fight a duel.They will mret in Delaware or some other sequestered Statejand fire at one another with real puiols loaded with real powder.One or both of them may iall on the field of honor or on the way home provided “‘local optiou” does not exist in the ity 6f the fight and interfere with their manly duties.Arrangements lave already been made to telegraph the result of the duel to the tour quarters of the earth, and Mr.Gladstone himselt will announce it in the House of Commons.Shouid both the heroes survive what tumultuous rejoicing would shake this solid ekrth, and should one of them fall through some mistake on the part ot the seconds in loading the pistols, wnat mourning and lameutation would go up trom the four continents and the islands of the seit There is but one way in which a duel can be averted.Bhould the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children interfere and induce the Supreme Court to appoint guardians for Messrs.(Gebhard and Baaford ail may yet be well.Such gunrdians would of course be sable bodied women, nurses by pro fession, and capable of wielding the slipper of corteciion with energy and effect.Let us hope that the society will interfere before it is too late, and thus relieve the terribie suspense of the present critical and unprecedented moment.EEE LET US SMILE ! shortened, and Gloyps repaired, free of charge.Tl AT THB —— Pars Kid oe Sam, 263 ST.JAMES STREET, 123x1 OPPOSITE MORGANS.Silk and Lisle Thread Gloves, FULI-PASHIONED MAKES, IN ALL SHADES, AT THE ParisKidGlove Store, "NOTMAN'S LIVER = STOMACH PADS.Cures without Medicing;
