fire of the Inman Line dock state that at the end of the pier a large quantity of crockery, carboys of acid and other merchandise was stored, which was saved by the firemen.Sixty 'longshoremen were working on' the extreme end of the pier unloading the \u201c t\u201d\u201d when the fire broke out, and it is possible that some of them lost their lives, but not probable.The engineer on the picr was the first to discover the fire He fought with the flames for a quarter of an hour, and claims to have been the last who left the pier.His hands and face were burned and his hair and eyebrows acorch- ed.He says be discovered the fire at a quarter past two, and shouted the news to the men, when most of them -dro what they had and fled for life.Two, however, helped him with the pier hose on the closet where the fire was.It did not do much good.The fire was under the pier and in the'bulkhead, eating its way along, in spite of all they did.The mes on the * Egypt\" cast off the lines and signalled for tew-boats to drag her into the stream.the time they got under way the fire was a over the pier and reached the vessel.The engineer and these still oti the pier fled.Before doing so, the J Corbin, Peter Lyall, C MoIntyre, H Graham, À Cowen, CE Smith, Alfred Roy, jr; N Lariviere, Ludger Cousineau, ete.ete.Mr.Andrew Rebertsen having.in a fow preliminary observations, vindicatsd tbe rights of the English-speaking citizens of Montreal to be représented in theit turn by a Mayor of their own natiônality, presented Mr.Bulmer with à re quisition, to which were appended 8,000 signatures, asking him to be a candidate fer the Montreal Mayoralty at the approaching elections.Ex-Mayor Rivard said that it afforded him much pleasure te support the eandidature of Mr.Bujmer.Not only had the turn of the English- ng people now come to have a Mayor, but y oir time had passed some time since.It was re easy to raise prejudices, and this had been repeatedly by individuals to keep\u2019 up their ae popularity, but the Englis -spesking people might rest assured that there were many\u2014 very many\u2014Frenoh Canadisas who were ready to support their candidate.There could be no question that the English-speaking people possessed a large number good able men\u2014indeed, there was > lack of om and tbey might rest assured that this year they bad every hove of suceess.Mr.Bulmer, he could say, from his past sogsaintanes with him, would make an excellent Mayor.He was à man of business, of integrity and of general popular ity.Indeed, he would make one of the best Mayors they had ever had, and would give every satisfastion to the citisens of Montreal.He might here say that ho knew it was difficult to please everybody.In the present imstance he saw as union upon their candidate of the three nationalities; the people of the East End sympathised with Mr.Bulmer and he must sucosed.Mr.Edward Murphy said that having known Mr.Bulmer for cver thirty years he bad always estoomed him as a man and a oitisen.His ex- rience of him for the last three years upon the arbor Commission had convinced him that he was not only !arge minded and liberal, bat tbat he was able and that he would oreditably fill any position that he might be given, Mr.KK.Greene congratulated the meeting - upon being of one mind.He saw here not only a large number of English speaking citizens, but an influential representation of Freneh-Canadians, He, therefore, hoped that those who were present would à apres their opinions upon their fellow.oitizens, for though Mr.Bulmer had not signified his intention of accepting the nomination, be had good reason to believe that he would.He fully realized that without the Frenoh-Canadian vote they could net carry the election.The only way in which the people of Mebtreal conld live harmonisusly tegether was by working in wnison and for the common good.Ald.Donevan said he was well pleased to some and join his fellow citizens of all nationalities, He felt that so large a gathering, without re- speot to nationality and oreed, mast be very encouraging to their candidate.It was about 21 years since he bad first met Mr.Bulmer in the City Council, and he bad always admired his integrity and ability; having served his pre- bation and renticeskip, it was fitting be should receive Ris diploma in the chape the Mayoralty this year and for a sesond, 1f he behaved bimsdif.(Laughter.)
