‘nion and Re- Canadn ions Tract soctegr The joint anniversary of these two bodies was held last evening in the St.James street Methodist Church, Dr.Dawson, Principal of McGill University, A.Mathewson.The meeting opened with devotional exercises, the Rev.AH.Muuro offering prayer.The Chairman said that the reason for holding the meetings of those two Societies together, was that they resembled one another in their organization and work.Both had a great deal to do with the young.The work of the Sun.day-school Union was to establish Sunday schools in remote parts, the Tract Society being intended to ciroulate interesting and instructive literature amongst those who are not possessed of libraries.The Rev.G.H.Wells, Corresponding Secretary of the Canada Sunday School Union, presented the forty-fourth annual report of that body, in which it was stated that the Society, instead of prospering, has shrunk.So limited were the funds at the disposal of the Union that they were only able to support one agent.According to the Treasurer's statements, the receipts of the year were $6,395, and the disbursements 86,182, leaving a balance on hand of 8213.The report was adopted.The Rev Dr Stevenson said that he thought there was nothing so noble as the work of cultivating the mind of youth.He thought that you catch a man at the right time when you catch him young.Sunday schools are essential to our growing civilization, and he was glad to sec the Sunday School Union on the same platform ag the Tract Society.He looked upon himself as a relation of the Tract Society, as a son-in-law, in fact; he having married a daughter of the Secretary of the lady.Rev.Mr.McKillican spoke of the good word done by : which has cone under his special notice.new to-day often churches farther, and accord the latter à place even above thht occupied by his celebrated countryman, yet it is quite certain that though equal in mechanical action, and perhaps superior in his rendering of grand, dignified, majestic compositions, he has not the sympathy, the humanity, the versatility of genius which so characterized the playing of Ole Bull, and he will never be so popular among the masses.lu person tall, stalwart, commanding, blue-eyed, and dark vhestnut-haired, he is almost an ideal son of the old Norsemen.His carriage is military, his gravity and indifference complete, his expression never changes in the slightest degree, and one could imagine his head as carved in stone except for its motion ou the shoulders and an occasional movement of the eyes.His action in playing is perfect ; the full-drawn how, the supple turning and bending of the wrist, the necessary accompanying -motious of the elbow and shoulder, the grand sweep of the whole arm, the movement of the left shoulder and instrument to meet it, the majestic swaying of the body, the grace, the ease, the power, the softness, the absence of unnecessary movements, arv ull there and in their perfection.All these qualities, personal and professional, make the man’s performance what it js grand, majestic, polished, classical, yet one cannot help fancving that though his execution would be perfect, he would te very much out of his clement in light and even pathetic compositions.He is evidently that among violinists which a great tragedian is among actors.Take him altogether, however, he has probably no living compeer, and the mantle of Ole Bull has fallen on worthy though not exactly fitting shoulders.The demeanor of Miss Fritch is nearly opposite that of Wi].helmj, outside of what one would expeet from the difference in sex.She possesses attractive features and wears on the stage a changing, winning, almost coquettish smile.Her voice is of great sweetness, compass; flexibility, and under complete control.Her rendering of * Calling the Kine,” in response to an encore, and ‘“ Sweotheart ”’ could certainly not be excelleil.Sternberg is unaffected and it is covered with sharp- pointed horny papille, set very thickly upon its surface.Thé papilæ on the front portion of the tongue are much larger than those in the rear part of the tongue, but the smaller ones are set much closer together than those in front.Each papilla consists of a.horny spine, the poirt of which is curved and set directly backward, reminding me much of the spises on the tail of the thornback ray.Ou applying this lion's tongue to the cheek, I find that the roughness is so great that with a little pressure a wound migh® easily be made in the human skin.The ase of this is to scrape off the meat from the bones of the animals, for the lion is not a great Pone-eater—he leaves the bones for the hyenss to crack, these anfmals having teeth especially constructed for the cracking of bones.This culiar roughness of the tongue is also present, 1t in a less degree, in the commen cat, and it can be seen when the cat is lapping milk, but still better if the tongue of a defunct specimen be taken out, put for a while in spirit and then pinned out tight on a board.his rough tongue is of grest importance to the health of the Lion.A Banoon's DINKER.— Bishop Colenso gives this incident in the carly life of a South African baboon.There is something quaintly human about it :—* It was a hot day and a number of baboons were sunning themselves along the bottom of the Idonga.They lay upon their backs, with half-Closed eyes, rabbing their stomachs in » state of placid enjoyment.Two or three young baboons had wandesed little distance from the Idonga, searching for scorpions from stone to stone just below them.They were not very successful, and it did not, appear that their movements were of much concern to their elders.Presently, however, one of the young ones turning up a stone, lit upon n particularly fine and fat scorpion, which, with a furtive lance round at his elders, he seized and popped into his mouth, having first pinched oft the sting.He at once proceeded to turn the stone over again with rt assiduity, as though in further unsuccessful search for scorpions, He had not escaped notice, however, for dewn the gully in a sluggish roll came a great baboon, who seized the young one by the scruff of-his peck, shaking him vi y until the plump morsel dropped from his mouth.Having gobbled this up, the clder baboon at once regained his lounge, and all went on as before in Tre Doc's Ux1vERsE.—Dogs not only smell odors in an occasional way, but they likewise seem to extract a recognizable odor from almost everything, as Prof.Croom Robertson also sug- seats.Anschaysis knows ine, when I am resscd in clothes he never saw before, by his nose alone.Let me get myself up in à thedtri- cal costume aud cover my face with a mask, yet he will ize me at once by some (to us) undiscoverable perfume.Moreover, he will nize the same odor as clinging to my clothes after they had been taken off.If I shy a pebble on the beach, he can pick out that identical pebble by scent among « thousend others.Even the very ground on which I bave trodden retains for him some faiht memento of ny presence for hours sfterward.The bleod- Hound can track a human scent a week old, — which argues a delicacy of noes slmost incredi, and fiuds its food at all seasoffs.Af |’ A Baptist Minister's Experience.1 am a Baptist minister and before’ I oven thought of being a clergyman 1 graduated in medicine but left a lucrative pmetice for ny present profession, 40 years ago.I was for many years a sufferer from quinsy, Thomas’ Ecletric Oil cured me,” I was also troubled with hoarseness and Thomas’ Eciootrie Oil always relioved me.° My wife and child had Diphtheria, and Thomas’ Eclectric Oil cured them,” and if takon in time it will cure seven times out of ten, I am confident it is a cure for the most obstinate Cold or Cough.and if any one will take a small teaspoon and half.fill it with the Oil and then placo the end of the spoon in uffe nostril and draw the Oil out of the spoon into the bead by eniffing as hard us they can until the 0il falls over into tho throat, and practice that twice a week, I don't care how offensive their head may be, it will clean it out and cuto thoir Catarrh.For Deafness and Earache it has done wonders to my certain knowledge.It is the only medicine dubbed patent medicine that I have aver {alt like recommending and I am very anxious to ses it-in every - -for I tell you that I would not be without it in my hoare for pata HR iw In ut brand nos + al ;
