CHEMIST AND DRUGGIÉT, 14 v 457 Notre Dame Street, Montreal, PROSPECTUS or Tan GANADIAN Dominion DinEcToRY FOR 1970-71; To which will be added the Provinces of Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island ; To BB PUBLISHED IN SEPTEMBER, 1870, Provided a suficient number of Subscribers and Advertisers cam de oblained to cover ooët of publication.NEARLY twelve years have now elapsed since the appearance of the CAXADA DIRECTORY POR 1957-58.This work was honored.with the unanimous approval of the Press, and of business men thronghost the British American Provineos, and wis most Savorably received fn the United States, Great Britain and Ireland, France, &¢.From all quarters the Pub- taher received the most flattering assurances of the merit and usefulness of the work, The lapse of time has rendered this Directory of little value for business purposes, and of late years the urgent need for 8 New DIRECTORY JOR THE DoMixioN oF CANADA has been repeatedly pressed upon the attention of the Subscriber. The expense of the former work, however, was vory considerable, and the result was s serious loss to tho Publisher. With the pecuniary sacrifice involved in the publication of the CANADA DIRECTORY YOR 1867-68, fresh in his fecollection, it is only at tho urgent solicitation of friends for whose opinion bo entartains the highest respeot, that the Subscriber has consented to make a new effort in the same direction. He will not, however, foel warranted In proceeding with the scheme ofa DIRECTORY FOR THE DOMINION OF CANADA unless & support commensarate with the magnitude of the undertaking be nocorded to him ; and this Prospectus ie issued 28 & preliminary step to an appeal to the publio to sabeeribe to the work.Ho proposes to make this appeal not only to the Canadian public, but to business men in tho United States.Grent Britain and Ireland, France, Germany, &c., from many of whom he has received communications on the subject. In the gvent of suflicient encouragement, the Subscribers Agents will commence early next Fall to take the Names of the Professional and Business Men, and of the principal Inhabi- tauts in the Cities, Towns and Villages throughout the six Provinoes, and to collect such information as may be suited to the pages of the Directory ; this they will continue to do until the work is complete. The large cities will be reserved to the latest possible moment, so that any changes which may have occurred, up to the time of going to press, msy be inoluded. To secure, as far as possible, the correctness of the Direetory, two or threo gentleman in each place will be solloited to revise the proof sheets contaluing information connected with the localities in which thoy reside. It may be stated that the matter for the Directory, will be put in type ss fast as it Ls received from the Agents, and that none of will be printed of until the last place is taken, so that corrections may be made up to within à fow woeks of publication. The Publisher believes it to bo unnecessary, in this address to Business Mem, to dwell at any length upon the necessity for the Directory which he proposes to publish ; but as one of the indications of the great diffvence that will arise between the present and the former Directory, it may be remarked that whereas the CANADA DIRECTORY For 1857-58 contained the names of only 1,880 places in Canada, the CANADIAN DoxinioN Drrecroxy will cone tain the names of the principal Inhabitants of ut least 8,500 places in the six Provinoes ; and It need hardly be added, that the change even in those places described in the Canada Directory will be proportionately great.‘The specimen pages which accompany this Prospectus will afford some ides of the plan and style of execution ofthe work.If enabled, by the liberal support of the publie, to carry out the undertaking, it will be the nim of the Subseriber to render the Directory an indispensable ‘companion to men of business throughout the Dominion of Canads,—and to houses in the United States, Great Britain and Ireland, France, Germany, &c., having transactions with this country. It will embrace much of value and Interest to the immigrant and the traveller, and every effort will be used to make it n complete and reliable work.JOHN LOVELL, Printer and Publisher, MoNTRRAL, June, 1800.
