» s yc ees À «oe Montreal : PRINTED AND SOLD BY LOVELL AND GIBSON, ST.NIOHOLAS STRANY, AKD AT THE BOOKSTORES.* Tet soe ve o .a PRIOR SRVEN SHILLINGS AND SIXPENCE, : Ê evar °\u2026 aes cat ce se \u2026 rey can?see v.nuve ae -.seu.Lows .3 a.*\u2026.LJ fore PP .\u201ceos 0% \u2026.f PREFACE.In again presenting the public with a new Volume of \u2018the MonTrEAL Crry DIRECTORY, béîng the sixth of the work which has been issued, it is the Editors pleasing duty, in the first place; to return his wost sincere thanks to the many kind friends who have uniformly sustained his éfforts to keep & propet Directory of the City in u course of annual publication.Although, considering the nature of the population of the City, the supporters of thé Work may be considered namerous, yet both Editor and Printers find to their cost that they are, by no treans, as many as any person unacquainted with the facts hight naturally suppose.Indeed, the present edition, which is un unusually successful one, is limited to six hundnd \u2018and fifty copies; nevertheless, the Editor will not be dis- eartetied by the insufficient remuneration for the labor and fatigue incurrsd in collecting and preparing the mass of information which is presented in this Volume; but, on the contrary, begs to assure his friends, that it will tend to promote renewed applicstion and éuetgy on his part, so that the Directory shall ultimately its way into the Counting House or Store of every person carrying on a sespestable business, in this City, who can read the Eng ge.Having indirectly alluded to the fact, that many who carry on a large business do not expend a shilling in support of this work, it may, perhaps, be proper to state here, that, to his own knowl most of them use the Directory; a good number of them Borrow it, and some of them, he has been credibly informed, forget to return it.As illustrating this matter, he can further state, that several inetinces have occurred of persons sending to himself for the loan of the Book, a request which was so exceedingly modest and reasonable, that, of course, hé could not refuse, but sent them a polite message, that he returned his beat thanks for the honor conferred upon him.A good many there dre, tod, Who get the work deli- 1V.vered, and promise to pay for it, but forget to do so; and in one instance, a person who had used it for months, (a hotel-keeper too, whose name does not appear as auch in the Classified List of Hotels this year, although he still carries on the business, ) sent it back when applied to for payment.The Editor, however, owes it to the hotel-keepers of the City to state, that this was a solitary exception amongst them, as he has .ever found those gentlemen to be warm, generous and liberal supporters of the Directory.In the Crassrriep Business Directory, he has, this year, adhered (with scarcely an exception) to the rule of inserting the names of Subscribers only; many professional and other gentlemen, in whose favor an exception may have previously occurred, may feel annoyed at this, but he can only say, that due warning was given of his intention, through the press, and that the course now pursued will be strictly carried out.In preparing last year\u2019s edition of the work, circumstances compelled him to entrust the collection of the .details for it to several individuals, some of whom, he is sorry to say, did their business very inefficiently.In the edition now presented, fully three-fourths of the same work was done by himself, and the remainder by a faithful and well qualified person, and the result appears in an addition of FORTY-FIVE PAGES, CONTAINING NEARLY FIFTEEN HUNDRED NAMES, TO THE ALPHABETICAL DIRECTORY.He has also given an ALPHABETICAL DIRECTORY TO TBE STREETS OF THE CITY, carefully compiled from the latest Surveys, together with a very neat little Map, while the price of the Book remains as it did last year.Trusting that his endeavors to meet the requirements of his friends and the public on this head will meet with their approbation, and that they will find the present Directory to be the best and cheapest work of its kind ever issued in Canada, He has the honor to remain their obliged and faithful servant, ROBERT W.§.MACKAY.Montreal, June 30, 1848.
