DIRECTORY OF THE CITIZENS GENERALLY; SECOND, A CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY, IN WHICH THE NAMES OF SUBSCRIBERS ARE ARRANGED UNDER THEIR PROPER BUSINESS HEADS ; AND THIRD, A DIRECTORY TO THE INSURANCE COMPANIES, BANKS, NATIONAL, RELIGIOUS, AND BENEVOLENT SOCIETIES AND INSTITUTIONS, AND TO ALL PUBLIC OFFICES, CHURCHES, &cC.&c¢.IN THE CITY.Ama Ammen, BY BOYLET w.S.\u2018MACKAY.FA me nas na, > {Montreal : PRINTED AND BOLD BY LOVELL AXD GIBSON, ST.NICHOLAS ATREET, AND AT TUE BOOKSTORES.PRICE SEVEX SUILLINGS AND BIXPENCE, FHL 2-1 45% aH, PREFACE.Arter a lapse of two years since the last\u2019 publication of the.work, the fifth volume of the Montréal City Directory is nre- sented to the public, with the hope that its rec ption will be such as to warrant a corrected edition being issued regularly every year in future. It was altogether owing to the paucity of the support which the work received when the edition of 1845 was published that it was suspended in 1846, and even now to ensure its successful issue, it was found necessary to raise the price to seven shillings and sixpence per copy. Those, however, who know the utility, and appreciate the value of such a work, were found, with scarcely an exception, to be.quite satisfied with the change, as they were fuiliy- avarc that.in a mixed community such as this, where but a limited number of copics could be sold at any price, no matter how low, it became the more necessary for them to contribute to its support. In procuring the information for the present volume, ne trouble or expense has besn spared.Every house in the City proper, embracing the East, Centre and West wards, was personally visited by the Editor, and his instructions to his assistants who were employed in making the necessary corrections in the Suburbs were definite and precise, to call at every house, great and small, within the City limits, and obtain the name and business of the residents therein.low far those instructions have bea well and accurately attended A vil to it will be for the public to decide, but the Editor confidently believes that on his part no exertion has been wanting to render the Directory as perfect and complete as any publication of the kind can be made.A new feature has been introduced in the present volume, viz., that of inserting the names of Subscribers in sMALL CAPITALS in the ALPHABETICAL PART of th~ vork ; they are also continued as heretofore in the Crass 1p Part, according to business or profession, And there can be little doubt but that the prominence thus given to the supporters of the Directory will be worth fully the entire cost to them. Some unavoidable delay arising from circumstances which could neither be foreseen nor controlled, has prevented the earlier publication (by about three weeks) of the present volame, for.which the indulgence of ifs patrons is respectfully requested. In conclusion, the Editor begs to return his best thanks to those gentlemen who have extended their support to the Directory, as Subscribers or Advertisers, and he would respect- fally suggest to them, that one of the most effectual methods of rendering its annual publication certain, will be found in their refusing to lend the book to any person who ts himself earrying on a business in Montreal, and is not a subscriber to the Directory.ROBT.W.8.MACKAY.Montreal, August, 1847, INDEX.Addenda
