PREFACE.In presenting the fist volume of the Montreal Directory to the public, the proprietors think a faw words, in the way of introduction, may nct be amiss.Of the necessity of the work, there has been generally but one opinion, and that decidedly favourable. In an undertaking of the kind, with a population so mixed as that of Montreal, itis hardly to be expected that the first volume will be found so perfect and accurate as could have been wished. But the proprietors hope that a reasonable degree of allowance will be made for errors, and that there will be found in the book, as a whole, such an amount of information, presented in such a form, as will render it both useful and interesting. For himself, the Editor would say, that whatever defects may exist (typographical errors exceptea,) are justly chargeable to him alone, as the arrangement of the work throughout is entirely his own.“.Some errors, he is aware, have crept in, owing to circumstances which in future volumes will be strictly guarded against, and, as far as they have been discovered, means to éoireci tiem have been taken, both by an Errata, (which see,) ; iv.and by placing the names correctly in the Classified part of the Directory.A pew feature is presented in the Classified Directory, namely, that of placing the cards of each business in immediate succession to the names of those engaged in it.The Editor flatters himself that this is a decided improvement, and believes it to be the cheapest and best method of circu- laling business cards ever offered to this community.Several suggestions as to publishing various statistical tatics, &c., bave been made to the Editor, by gentlemen.for whose opinions he has the highest respect. Some of those will, and.some.wili net, be found in the work; but those which are not included.are.such as properly belong.toe a work .relating to the Province: in.general, (such as the Canada Almanac) and not one relating, as the Directory does, to matters connected with the city oniy.In collecting the matter for the Directory, much difficulty was encountered in procuring the names of a large class of the popuiation.A great many altogether refused to give information, and where the names of such persons were obtained from others, more intelligent than themselves, it was in many instances without being able to arrive at the Chris- {ian name.It is, however, to be hoped, that when such persons find that st cosfs nothing to have their names inserted, they will vs - be willing in future to give the requisite information, and that consequently the work will be made still more complete. It is intended, in the future volumes of the work, to include the names of all who are connected with business, whether housekeepers or not, giving their place of residence and the house with which they are connected, and such other improvements will be carried out as may be considered valuable to the public.‘To those gentlemen who have extended their support to the work, both as subscribers and advertisers, and'also to all who have aided him with information or advice in compiling it, the Editor would, in conclusion, return his most sincere thanks.Montreal, October 21, 1842.x2 Page.Addenda,.….0.02000000e PP 11 Alphabetical Directory a: ccviveviineesnnianss ……….12-188 Advocates,.,.cocveneiennesn “renee
