Passerelle has been completely rebuilt for this summer, with the addition of windows allowing young children to see the variety of animals, including black bears, chimpanzees and Japanese macaques, as well as arctic wolves, and spotted hyenas, without having to be lifted over the barrier.In the Japanese macaques\u2019 enclosure, visitors will now be able to catch a glimpse of Geisha and her newborn.The macaques were just recently released into their summer space as the renovations to the passerelle meant their enclosure was less secure.\u201cWe wouldn't want any getting loose,\u201d laughed Prairie.Responding to visitors\u2019 needs After several years of new additions and unveilings with the creation of the Afrika Terrasse and last year\u2019s inauguration of the Cheetah Research and Conservation Centre, Parc Safari is taking the season to step back and work at improving its installations.\u201cWe don\u2019t have anything new\u201d says Prairie, before correcting himself \u201cWe have new species, but we don't have anything major\u201d he suggests, explaining \u201cbecause we don't have anything new we are concentrating on giving people what they have asked for\u201d This commitment has meant looking at smaller details, for example the washrooms have been renovated.They will be adding binoculars to the Afrika Terrasse near the Cheetah enclosures as the stunning cats are not always on the move and can be hard to spot.A number of trees were planted in the Cheetah\u2019s space to improve the environment as well.The Parc Safari team is even looking at ways to improve congestion in the Safari Adventure, which can seem similar to rush hour traffic during peak hours in the Park.For Prairie, it is all in an effort to respond to visitors to ensure they teachers in Ormstown and across the Valley.Anticipation is mounting for the 100th edition of Expo Ormstown, which will climax on Wednesday at sundown with the Parade of Lights and on Thursday with the Parade of Decades and official opening of a weekend celebration a century in the making.SARAH RENNIE sarah.rennie@tc.tc \u201cEverything is coming along well,\u201d says Expo Ormstown Manager, Kyla Stacey, of the last minute rush to ensure everything is in place and ready to go.\u201cWe are really happy with the entries coming in,\u201d she says, suggesting the stage is set for a packed weekend of activities for the entire family.Best of all, the 100th iversary seems to have reignited a sose of pride and community around the Fair.\"I have been really pleased with the chatter around.It's nice to see the community supporting 100 years,\" she says, pleased the hard work of the directors, committee members, and volunteers over the past year is being well received.Wednesday night's Parade of Lights will be preceded by a gathering of dignitaries and special guests.Huntingdon MNA and Chief Whip for the Liberal Party of Quebec, Mr.Stéphane Billette, as well as the Minister for Agriculture, Mr.Pierre Paradis, are scheduled to attend the event.At sundown, all are invited to line the streets of Ormstown for a special Parade of Lights including tractors, trailers, farm machinery, antique cars and much more strung with lights and decorations.On Thursday, the traditional parade will snake its way through Ormstown, featuring floats depicting events or themes from the different decades of the past century Following the parade and the official opening of the fair, the annual pig round-up will take place, with a special class this year for any adults out there brave enough to climb into the ring.EXPO ORMSTOWN 100 years young The storied history of the Ormstown Expo dates back to 1910 when the Livestock Breeders Association of the District of Beauharnois (LBA) was formed.The first fair was held on May 18 and 19, with horses stabled in private barns in and around Ormstown while cattle, sheep and swine were stabled in what is now the curling rink.It was not until 1912 that the current fairgrounds would come into the picture, with the purchase of a farm bordering the vil- The second annual \u2018Expo Ormstown Rocks\u2019 Talent Show will also take place following the official opening of the fair.Any local musicians looking to impress are still able to sign up for a slot on the stage.On Friday, classrooms will likely stand empty as students flock to the fairgrounds for all the rides they can stomach thanks to bracelet day and Campbell Amusements.Of note on Friday will be an addition to this year\u2019s line-up with the introduction of mini chuck wagon races.As well, the MacLeod Fiddlers will be performing from 5 to 7 in the Friendship tent.Bracelet day has been extended to include Saturday this year as well, along with a number of special events relating to the 100th anniversary.Starting in the morning, a timber frame demonstration will take place which will culminate in the raising of an 18 x 30 timber frame structure using traditional methods.Don\u2019t miss the opportunity to see firsthand how many of the older farm buildings and some ancestral houses in the area were constructed using this method.Following the 4-H Pee-Wee Showmanship class, all 4-H or Quebec Young Farmers alumni who have shown a calf at the Ormstown Fair are invited to take part in a special class, organized by decade.For those unable to make arrangements for a calf there will be a few on hand to borrow, but a special effort to remember to wear white would be appreciated.Also on Saturday, organizers are hoping to welcome 100 descendants of the original fair directors: Duncan McEachran, Neil Sangster, Robert Ness, Archibald McCormick, L.A.Cunningham and James McClintock.A special photo session is planned.In the evening, the six-horse hitch show will take place, as per usual, with at least eight teams already registered.Sunday at the fair will be a tad busier than in years past with the inclusion of a few special events to cap the festivities.Just prior to the start of the demolition derby, there will be a Hercules fly-by to stoke the crowd around noon.And, just lage by the LBA.Construction began in earnest on an arena, however in November the unfinished structure was destroyed by fire.It was rebuilt and finished in time for the 1913 edition of the fair The construction of cattle barns soon followed in 1916 and the dining hall in 1920.The gate, which to this day welcomes fairgoers to the site, was built in 1921 after the land was donated to the Citizens Soldiers Memorial Committee.In 1924 the grandstands were built, featuring pipers and drummers from every pipeband in Quebec will perform around 2 pm.The show will also feature dancers and soloist Liz Guerin.Throughout the weekend, the schedule will be so packed with demonstrations, music, agricultural shows and spe- ted the following year.It was only in 1929 that organizers of the fair decided the event should take place each year at the same time, and they settled on the second week of June.The fair continued on each year until the start of World War II, when funds were diverted to the war effort and the decision was made to cancel the fair.During these years, the fairgrounds were used by the War Department.It was upon the end of the War in 1945 that the annual tradition of the fair was restored.In 1955, when tough times took their toll on the fair and it neared ban- cial acts, there will be something for everyone.While touring the home and garden and animal exhibitions, visitors should watch for the winners of a special 100th anniversary class edition of The Gleaner - La Source is rife with examples of the Valley's outstanding athletes and their accomplishments.From CVR's sports program to Arthur-Pigeons\u2019 Frontalier Actifs and young Thomas Murphy's stellar display of sportsmanship, we have reason to be proud.There is definitely a local tradition of excellence when it comes to sports and all of the virtues to be gleaned from friendly competition and the healthy habits an active lifestyle encourages.The Valley breeds good kids, and likewise, there are a lot of mentors, coaches, teachers, and volunteers in our schools and community sports programs who not only live up to these standards, but ensure their young charges do the same.It is interesting that as we are celebrating our athletes, the rest of the globe is ramped up for one of the largest tournaments in the FIFA World Cup, which kicked off on June 12.As an unashamed soccer fan, I admit I will be tuning in to more than a few of the games featuring many of the world's elite athletes.That being said, I am also keenly aware of the controversy surrounding this year\u2019s tournament, and large sporting events in general.It would seem the once revered value in watching the world come together in a celebration of sport has slipped into a reviled display of corruption, scandal, protest and abuse.Billions have been spent on World Cup infrastructure in many ways at the expense of the Brazilian population, which suffers from one of the highest inequality ratios on the planet.The rich will enjoy the games along with the throngs of tourists now flooding into the South American soccer stronghold, while the poor are sidestepped.A new movement by the not-for- profit organization Football Without Borders, which uses soccer to fight prejudice and inequality, to hold a Favela World Cup is part of a growing protest against the scale of the World Cup and the devastation it can wreak on host country populations.Already, we are hearing evidence to suggest the 2018 tournament in Russia will be no better and stories of the utterly horrifying conditions facing workers already preparing for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar are surfacing.For a beautiful game, this is disgusting I am not so naive to think we can simply amplify this to a global level, or that tournaments such as the World Cup can take place without massive investments, but couldn't we at least find a way to inject the kind of fair play and sportsmanship demonstrated by young athletes around the world into the organization behind these events?If not, I'd rather watch the Favela Cup, and 4 ran 1 km and those in grades 5 and 6 ran 2 km.Over 5,500 runners from the Montreal area competed.Our athletes, proudly wearing their school colours, and after weeks of training, were prepared.In the boys'2 km race our guy, Thomas Murphy, was in third place after the turn towards the -finish line.He- managed to pass into second and about 30 metres from the finish line the guy who was in first place tripped and fell allowing Thomas to pass him and win the race.Thomas came home with a gold medal and we celebrated.This morning, Thursday, I received a phone call from St.Paul Elementary School trailers in the midst of ongoing construction at the school.The sentiment was echoed by many in the room.Two options were discussed at length, a temporary move to Howick Elementary School for the duration of construction at the Ecole Saint-Jean, or a permanent move to the English school.\u201cWe need to look at these options objectively\u201d said Mr.Alain Beaulieu, who initiated the consultation with parents.The debate was quite extensive, with some very receptive to the idea, while others expressed a degree of resistance to a permanent move.All were in agreement that the two schools would have to remain separate entities within the same building for the vast majority of the time.In the end, it was decided that the option that made the most sense was a permanent relocation; given Howick Elementary School presently has unused space available and moving would cost significantly less than renovating the existing school.A resolution In a resolution signed by the vast majority in attendance Wednesday evening, the parents moved to request the CSVT suspend all actions concerning the renovation of the Ecole Saint-Jean in favour of immediately initiating \u201cserious discussions on the permanent relocation of school activities at the Ecole Saint-Jean to Howick Elementary School.\u201d The parents also requested the school board form a committee together with the New Frontiers School Board to \u201ccoordinate and oversee the move and the coexistence of the two schools\u201d.The committee, the parents suggest, should include parent representatives from both the schools, teachers and school board members.According to Mr.Beaulieu, the New Frontiers School Board has already demonstrated its openness to relocating the Ecole Saint-Jean to its premises.And, he suggested, the French and English communities in Howick and Trés-Saint- Sacrement get along well and the students are already familiar with one another through daycare, municipal sports programs, and community organizations.\u201cFor the community, Ithink it works,\u201d he said.Next steps Another alternative that would see the parents take their case directly to the Ministry of Education was also put forward to positive response.Mr.Jean- Pierre McKenzie, the political attaché for Huntingdon MNA, Stéphane Billette, was in attendance at the meeting, petite histoire de Expo Ormstown a commencé en 1910 au moment de la fondation du Livestock Breeders Association du district de Beauharnois (LBA).La première foire s\u2019est déroulée les 18 et 19 mai a été détruite par les flammes.Le bâtiment a été reconstruit en 1913.La construction de la grange destinée aux génisses a suivi en 1916 et celle de la salle à manger en 1920.La barrière qui accueille aujourd'hui les visiteurs a été construite en 1921.En 1924, les estrades ont été bâties, et en 1930 la construction du bâtiment industriel a suivi.Les travaux se sont terminés l'année suivante.La foire est devenue un événement annuel en 1929, L'exposition s'est déroulée chaque année jusqu'au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.Là, les fonds dont bénéficiaient les organisateurs de l'exposition ont été versés au budget militaire.La foire a donc été annulée durant trois ans; période où le site a été utilisé par les soldats.À la fin de la guerre, en 1945, l'exposition a repris ses droits sur avoir découvert la moisissure dans le gymnase de l'école, en septembre 2013.Les parents estiment que les travaux de rénovation hypothéqueront la cour d'école.Les sections destinées aux terrains de jeux et aux sports d'équipe seront réduites.\u201cSi l'environnement n\u2019est pas adéquat, je n'enverrai pas mes enfants à l'école\u201d, a dit un parent, en réponse à la possibilité que les élèves puissent poursuivre leur formation dans les roulottes lors des rénovations.Ce sentiment a trouvé écho chez d'autres parents.Deux solutions ont fait l'objet de discussion, soit un déménagement temporaire des jeunes à l'école primaire Howick, le temps des rénovations, ou encore un transfert permanent à l'école anglophone.\u201cNous devons regarder ces solutions avec objectivité\u201d, a Huntingdon.STÉPHANIE PROULX La 25° édition du gala de la Montérégie a permis de souligner les performances de plusieurs athlètes, entraîneurs et institutions.L'école secondaire Gérard- Fillion de Longueuil a été nommée l'école ayant le plus contribué au développement des activités physiques et sportives.Au niveau primaire, c'est l'école Sacré-Cœur de St-Jean-sur- Richelieu qui a remporté les
