the battle of Little Big Horn on June the 26th, The accountdoes not differ essentially from the reports already published. It says, however, thab Sitting Bull was neither killed nor psr- sonally engaged inthe fight, Crazy Horse, with a large band, and Black-Moon were the principal leaders on the 25th of June, Kill Eagle, chief of the Blackfeet, afterwards upbraided Sitting Bull for not taking an active personal part in the engagement, Kill Eagle states that he was forced into the fight, and that he desires to return to the agency, and that he will return to the agency if he is killed for it.The general outline of the Indian report concurs with the published report. The first attack of Renos began well on in the day.The Indian report gives about 300 whites killed, and does not say how not yet obtainable, THE EASTERN CONFLICT.SUMMARY OF THE SITUATION IN THE FIELD —THE SERVIAN PLAN OF OPERATIONS —-POSITIONS OF THE VARIOUS CORPS, Lonpox, July 19, 1876, The war seems to be in a quiescent state at present and the interest centres in the future conduct of Roumanis and Greece, The former is badly disaffected, and although unprepared for open rebellion to the Porte is inclined to demand } concessions which can never be peaceably granted, The assertions that Russian influence produces these resulta in Roumania TW ERD PANTS, Price $2.00, No, 9 Chabôil- lez Square, have the appearance.of probability, but et.Some attention is drawn to Greece y the arrival in Vienna of deputations from Thessaly and Epirus declaiming loudly against Turkish persecutions. In the face of this reports from Constantinople announce the accession of several companies of Greek infantry to the Turkish army, The Standard to-day prints an interview with Colonel Ivanovich, chief of Prince Milan’s staff, who says the plan of campaign is toclear off the Turkish troops from the Turkish provinces containing oppressed Christians by three methods :—First, by stimulating a general insurrection ; second, by cutting the Turkish communications with the rest of Turkey, then by attacking the Turkish forces thus isolated and harassed, The present position is momentarily inactive, awaiting the development _of the insurrection and the, repulse of the threatened Turkish offensive movement on the eastern frontier. The renewal is imminent of the Turkish 4ttack on Saits- char.A Turkish column from Widdin is at present holdiug Isvor, inside the Ser- vian frontier, and also Adlia, outside the frontier. To oppose this Leschjanin helds Saitschar witha large proportion of the army, about 2,000 strong, and he has a column thrown forward to the frontier ‘Tine, occupying positions at Nastaki, Verske Kuka and Poljana, flanking the line of thé Turkish march on Saitschar from Isvor and Adlia, and guarding the road from Bulgariatoward the bridgeacross ‘the Timok at Vratpnica General Tchér- ‘mayeff, with a column from the south- ‘eastern army, has gone northward to cooperate in : e.TAEING THE TURKS ON THEIR, FLANK in the event of ap attack on Saitschar The following iz the position of Tchers nayefl’s main army, consisting of 60,000 men:—It started from the eastern frontier at Kladenatch, bulged out eastward and southward through the hill villages to the Nicolaja Pass, thence southward to Cerovo, the extreme point~in this direction. The line then tends westward in front of Babi- na-Glana, passing three villages north of Akpalanka, which position the Servian troops do not hold, and so southwesterly to Topolinitza, on the south of Nisch, and across the Morava to Prokolje, the extreme western point of Tchernayeff’s army proper.Ibis said to consist of 100 battalions, each battalion of full strength of 70) men, There are in all twenty-nine brigades, subdivided into six columns, Georgeovitz has the southern forepost and flank, with two brigades. His headquarters are ab Topolinitza., Horbatovitz, who is second gades from Babina Glana by Cerova northward, occupying the southern angle, and Tchernayeff has eight brigades with himself on the southern front, Zach is INTRENCHED BEFORE NOVI BAZAR, His Lieutenant, Antich, is in an intrenched position about midway between Novi Bazar and Mitrovitz, to intercept the communication from the railway terminus at the latter place.Thirty villages near Novi Bazar are in arms for the Servian cause. On the western frontier Olimpics still remains intrenched before Bellina, Although this statement of the situation is from Servian sources it is undoubtedly thé nearest to the correct one which has reached London this week, PUBLIC OPINION, THE PUBLIC SCALES.To the Editor of the STAR : Sir,—Why is it that persons who pay 820 license as public weighers are compelled to keep open from 7 a.m.fo 6 p.m, (as per City By-law, No.60, sec.3), whilst the city scales are closed at 4 p.m., and the Weigh Masters refuse to weigh thereafter?JouN WATKINS, “FACT, I ASSURE YOU,” To the Editor of the STAR : Sr, —‘‘Facts are stubborn things.” Allow me to record one for public information, A few days since I advertised “a Want” in the STAR one day, and I have since received ten letters in reply.I inserted a similar advertisement in another paper in the city two days, and I have not had a single answer, I enclose my card, and remain, your obedient servant, ‘WANTED, MORTALITY AMONG CHILDREN.To the Editor of the STAR : SIR,—I wish to offer an advice on the means that can be applied to prevent the .mortality among the children of the city. The infants and children get cold for the with articles made of cotton, and are exposed to the cold drafts at windows, doors, and gateways, hence sickness, coprulsions, and death.Parents should ess their children with flannels, best inside and outside articles, and t~ Pe Worn summer d winter.A Montreal is as healthy and cleaner than itv i orth America. The removal any city in twice a week has made a great improvement in the health and comfort of the inhabitants, The removal of night soil should be done during the winter months, An improvement is very much required in house drains, the joints of the pipes should be made water-tight with cement or blue clay, and, if properly done, no leakage can take place in the house, and no injurious gases or stench is felt in the dwelling, The Health Committee should give directions and instructions on these important matters to the citizens, This can be done by a printed notice being left in every house in the city.Alderman McCord is very willing and anxious to prevent sickness, and to make improvements for the benefit of the working classes, and as Chairman of the Healt Committee, I am sure that he will lose no time in acting on the above suggestions.J.P, Montreal, 31st July, 1876.THE POTATO BUG.To the Editor of the STAR: Str,—In reply to your query regarding the effect of Paris green upon potato fields, I may say that, when proper care has been taken, it has been proved to be a safe and reliable means of checking the ravages of the Colorado potato beetle, but, to be of.fective, the powder must be of the very best quality and applied at the proper time, The Paris green can be applied to the plants either dry or as a liquid ; when used dry it is best when mixed with flour in the proportion of one part, by weight, of Paris green with ten or twelve parts of flour. It should be dusted on the vines in the morning, before the dew has risen, and care should be taken that the wind may not blow it against the person.* Flour is the best material to mix the Paris green with, as it remains longer on the leaves, and the insects eat it more readily. If used as a liquid, one or two teasponfuls of Paris green to a pailful of water will be sufficient if the powder is of good quality; it should be stirred frequently and may be applied with a whisk dipped in the liquid, and shaken over the plants, This method takes less Paris green, and it can be applied at any time, During last summer the chemist of the Department of Agriculture in Washington made a series of experi ments in order to ascertain how far the soil could be impregnated with Paris green without proving injurious to plant life, The results have been shown that Paris green, sufficient to destroy the potato beetle, may be used without influencing | the soil to the detriment of plant life to any perceptible extent. As regards any danger arising from pasturing animals in fields that in previous years had been treated with Paris green, we may, 1 think, set our minds at rest on that point, if we bear in mind the fact that for some years past the greater portion of the potatoes eaten west of the Province of Quebec were grown in fields liberally supplied with Paris green, and as no person, ag far as I am aware, has been hurt by eating those tubers, it ig not likely that horses or cattle would be injured by eating grass grown in fields that in former years had been saturated with Paris green, nothing has been proved against Russia F, B.CAULFIELD, in ‘command to Tchernayeff, has ten bri- | former communication on the subject of Secret Societies. It is not my purpose or desire to cavil at words, or the consistencies of my critic, but simply to endorse what I stated before, and to satisfy ¢‘ Hassan Sabah” what I did mean, since he cannot comprehend the unmis« _takable language I used.’ “To the unbiased mind no other conelu- sion could be come to than what I really aimed at, viz, :—Not to condemn any society simply because it had secrets, and, in the interests of the public good generally, to consider the propriety of suppressing all outward demonstrations except funerals, These principles were and are my most ardent desire, and in order to be consistent, I was scrupulously cautious to make my remarks so general as to cause no offence to any.I sincerely trust that neither ¢ Hassan Sabah,” nor any of your many readers wha may have read the article, will class me -a8 an apologist for secret societies, as that is farthest from my thoughts. But as my attention was drawn to the one-sided re« marks of an editorial of a contemporary on this subject that appeared recently, ‘and from the assurances of the past two months, I concluded that the best way to treat the matter was to endeavor to promote peace and good-will throughout the Dominion by a calm and equitable discus- "Bion, in such a way as to lead all parties to forego, for the sake of harmony and the public good, all outward demonstrations.A general law to suppress all processions and demonstrations of the kind alluded to, and restricting the same to the precincts of the places of meeting, as has been done recently in Switzerland, would be equitable, and would be no doubt received by the public without much opposition, An immensity of trouble, loss of time, and the cause of many feuds and annoyances .would thus be removed, and such a law would undoubtedly tend to promote a state of things which is entirely to be desired in such a mixed community as ours is, With these remarks, advanced in kindness, and free from party feelings or interests, but desirous of promoting fair play simply, I take leave of the subject pro tempore, Yours truly, Montreal, July 31, 1876.Fr A.most daring burglary was perpetrated early yesterday morning at the residence of 8.B.McCoy, of Waterford, a stove manufacturer of Albany, The burglars— ten in number—approached the residence from the rear, coming in a row-boat u the Hudson river, which passes the yard. They effected an entrance to the house through a kitchen window. After gaining access they first entered the room occupied by Miss Daisy McCoy, in which slept a large watch-dog.They threatened to shoot herif she refused to silence the dog.The lady, becoming frightened at seeing such a band of men all masked and armed, fainted, They ransacked the room and found a gold locket, They then entered the room of Mrs, McCoy, who, becoming aware of their presence, took a dress and covered over a silver basket containing a number of family relics. The robbers entered the room, but failed to find any valuables, They then proceeded to Mr, McCoy’s apartments. He was aroused from his slumber by a blow from the ringleader, and discovered that his room was filled with men armed with revolvers, which were directed toward him, They interrogated him as to the whereabouts of his money and valuables. After hesitating somewhat he said: ‘‘ Boys, 1 have enough shot in the house for you all, but you have the advantage of me.Lower that revolver from my head and take what you want” They found 875 in currency in the pocket of his pantaloons, They asked for his gold watch and chain, which he was compelled to produce, One asked him where ‘‘ Ed.’s” room was, as if acquainted with the family, They the marched him to “Ed” apartment, Arriving, they demanded of the occupant his watch and money, which he refused -to give, Mr.McCoy, his uncle, told him it was useless to show fight, Finally he submitted to the request of the inquisitive trespassers, and handed over his gold watch and chain, and twenty dollars in money.Leaving men to guard their prisoners, Tn proceeded to the servant’s apartment.Finding her asleep, they made her aware of their presence by a slight thump from the butt of a pistol, and asked her to inform them where the silverware was kept, saying that in case of refusal they would kill her, She replied that all the silver was on the sideboard downstairs. Two went to the dining-room, took a table cloth and placed all the ware they could find in it, and carried it off.In the room of the domestic they found a lot of her jewellery and a five dollar note, which were added to the spoils. The silverware, being all they could steal, completed their raid. They then proceeded to the room | where Mr.McCoy was confined and made him swear that he would no alarm the people of Waterford until after nine o’clock in the morning, It being a somewhat cempulsory proposition, he consented, In case of his refusal they threatened to burn down his barns and residence and maltreat the occupants. They departed, saying they disliked to trouble him, but being workmen out of employment, they needed money, Mr, McCoy, in accordance with his promise, did not inform the police of the village until 9 o'clock, Being asked why he delayed in alarming the neighborhood, he said he always kept his promises, Two masks were found near the banks of the river lastnight. They were made of black cambric, and attached to the head gi as to what is to be done with the recaptured Youngs, condemned to death for the Caledonia murder, the homicidal spirit has been stalking abroad.Twe more murders are recorded, making six in a fortnight, and in every instance the details of the crime have been of a revolting character, It is time to stop this sort of thing with a high hand, for it is but too plain that the recent commutations have done not a little to lessen the value of human life in the eyes of the violent.À sentimental humanitarianism must not be permitted to threaten society with a condition akin to that of some of the Southern States, AmERICAN Farr TrapE,—The fall trade has opened encouragingly in the New York dry goods business.Buyers have arrived from the extreme Southand Southwest, and, favored by fine weather, there is a prospect of the developing activity extending to other branches of commerce.Heavy sales of flannel have worked off the stocks manufacturers had on hand, and a new impulse has been thus given which may set the mills running on full time, The gradual rise in prices betokens returning confidence, and altogether, the New York journals which have recorded these facts are disposed to con- sides that the depression has given way to a feeling of hopefulness almost amounting to buoyancy.‘WaisreyY Rina REVELATIONS.-The “Whiskey Ring Investigation,” proceeding before a Committee of Congress, reveals in a striking manner the nature of the immediate associations of President Grant. He had a precious lot of rascally friends, if ever ruler had, and they have used him to their own purposes with an astute dexber- ity worthy of a better cause. The gangs of corruptionists and revenue thieves who carried on their operations on such a gigantic scale as the trial of the St.Louis and Chicago conspirators showed, sought with much success to ally themselves with the White House, They were enabled ta draw into theirnet members even of the executive family. The evidence of Bluford ‘Wilson before the Committee indicates very strongly that not only was Orvil Grant implicated, but that the President's son, Col.Fred.Grant, had somewhat to do with frauds upon the revenue. It is not clear that the President was ignorant of their connexion, and his anxiety to save Babcock showed that he dreaded the results, Once the fury of the storm was tided over, he turnsd upon those who had instigated proceeding againstthe Whiskey Ring, and commenced %o sweep them out, Commencing with Secrdary Bristow, he has spared none, and s¢ comprehensive has been institutions.THE DIFFERENCE,—The Herald remarks : s“ At present almost every one is talking of hard times; and here many people, instead of in their own cases endeavoring to study out the question and provide a remedy for them, are occupying themselves by blaming the Governticuy, and by endeavoring to raise in_the minds of the masses a feeling of hostility to our Government at Ottawa, which in all certainty, no matter what its fiscal policy might have been, can in no way be held responsible for the misfortunes which have overtaken, not Canada alone, but the world at large. We notice that but few people in England, hard as the times are there, are undertaking to censure the Government of the day ; they are rather endeavoring to show that these things must be, and to reconcile people to a state of affairs which cannot be avoided.” The argument, in favor of immigration hitherto has always been that, being a young, sparsely settled country, with great and varied natural resources, Canada is par excellence the land for the poor man, provided he be sober and industrious. If, as the Herald assumes, there is no difference between Canada and England, then the Emigration Department is a fraud and the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent annually on that Department is so much public money squandered. The advocates of a Canadian national policy of Fair Play hold that Canada has such natural advantages that were such a policy adopted and adhered to, there would be little heard of hard times here no matter how the rest of the world was affected.Whilenqoue, as the Herald pretends, holds the present Government directly re- sponsiblefor the “hard times,” it may fairly be urged that they are chargeable with having neglected to endeavor to bring about better times, while we do not think even the Herald will say that it was not the action of the Government that killed the direct tea’and coffee trade and closed=the Canadian sugar refineries. The Government are blamed for their apparent contempt for Canadian interests, as summed up in the words of the First Minister, that if an industry could not get along with the present tariff, the sooner if was stopped the better. To compare Canada with England is absurd. The United Kingdom constitutes a distributing centre for the world.Canada is so situated that she has in a great measure to depend upon herself, Her comparatively lowly position to-day is mainly due to the fact that never yet has she struck out a bold independent policy, giving no more than an equivalent for whatever she might receive, The vircum- stances of the Old Country have made the people favor © Free Trade” and direct taxatior, consequently when trade is bad they cannot blame the Government. An entirely different policy is supposed to “obtain with Canadian statesmen.Direct taxation is not dreamt of and the Government is supposed to be desirous of fostering home industries.Yet, what are the facts? Not the slightest care for the development of the country—even a sacri- L ficing of our interests to foreigners. What “the ao then, if the people of Canada blame ~~ “ant?‘ Ps cl Tee DEMOCRATIC CARDIDATE.—The Democratic party in the United States have used up a vast deal of enthusiasm in hailing the - nomination of Governor Tilden as the Presidential candidate of their choice. The candidate worked most assiduously him.“gelf to the great end, and it is said that in the St, Louis Convention “Uncle Sammy’s ly.Since the great pow-pow, however, - the candidate has been very silent.Unlike Mr.Hayes, he has as yet failed to publicly acknowledge and accept the honor which has been done him.He claims to of the New York State executive, and, in ly for a declaration of principles from him.the country and the Republicans are canvassing eagerly with it.For them defeat means political perdition, and, knowing this, theyare straining every nerve to overcome the effects of a reaction in popular feeling which the exposures of official venality that have been, and still are being, made, have brought about. The Democrats have no settled declaration from their principal nominee, while from Indiana comes intelligence that Governor Hendricks is getting restive, He would appear to be possessed by à desire to figure as the chief personage in the campaign, and it has been found necessary to remind him gently, but firmly, that he is not the head but the tail of the ticket. But for all his anxiety to be up and doing, his chief at Albany makes no sign and writes no letter. This is regarded as bad policy, and the New York Herald, a journal not unfavorable to Til- den, warng him that he is casting away his opportunities. The Governor is a skilful politician, however, and may have some Napoleonic stroke in reserve intended to strike and dazzle those who are so constantly nagging at him for ‘‘a letter.” CITY ITEMS.— High Constable Bissonnette has arrested one Benoni Moussean, of St.Phillipe de Valois, charged with the larceny of a buggy from Paul Boucher, a farmer, of Laprairie. In hig possession were found a fine grey mare, valued at $150, and a magnificent set of silver-mounted harness, of which he cannot give any satisfactory account. An owner is therefore wanted, who should apply to the High Constable, — The many of the lecture-going people being out of town, Mr.Carswell delivered a fine address, enforcing the cause of temperance in a most eloquent manner. The lecture was interspersed with numerous anecdotes, exceedingly well told.Rev.Mr.Cruick- shanks occupied the chair and introduced the lecturer in appropriate terms.BrieFLETS.—Edward L’Allemand was yesterday arrested on suspicion of at a hotel in Portland for two weeks. They were accompanied to the station by the fife and drum band. The Rev.Mr.Sommerville addressed another large meeting in Zion Church last evening in his characteristically vigorous style.A gentleman states that a horse with a large sore on its shoulder is being cruelly used by a carter of stone on Oa- tario street, between St.Denis-and German streets.Tae C.P.R.—Wehave received a communication from an officer of the Young Irishmen’s Literary and Benefit Society, complaining of the usage the Society experienced at the hands of the C.P.R.Coon the day of their pic-nic to Perry's Island. Our correspondent states that a verbal agreement was made to provide sufficient car accommodation, but this agreement was not carried out, and overcrowding and general inconvenience was the result. We can fully substantiate this statement, as not the smallest attempt was made to meet the requirements of the day.Smoking has also begun again in full force on the cars, and the conductors and drivers do not seem to pay any attention to the regulations in reference to it.- Base Barn, —Owing to the numerous notices which have appeared in
