7, 1876.Hon.Edward McPherson and cihers, Committee of the Republican National Convention GENTLEMEN,—In reply to your official communication of June the 7th, by which I am informed of my nomination for the office of President of the United States by the Republican National Convention at Cincinnati, I accept the nomination with gratitude, that hoping, under Providence, I shall be able, if elected, to execute the duties of that high office of trust with my best ability.I do not deem it necessary to enter upon the extended announcement of the principles made by the Convention ; the resolutions are in accord with my views, and I heartily concur in the principles they announce, In several of the resolutions, however, questions are considered which are of such importance that I deem i$ proper to briefly express my convictions in regard to them. The fifth resolution adopted by the Convention is of paramount interest.More than forty years ago, the system of making appointments fo office grew up, based upon the maxim—To the victors belong - the spoils. The old rule—the trite rule, { that honesty and fidelity constitute the only real qualifications for office, and that there is no other claim, gave place to the idea that party services were to be chiefly considered. All parties in practice have adopted this system. It has been essentially modified since its first introduction, It has not, however, been improved. At the first, the President, either directly or through the heads of departments, made all the appointments, but gradually the appointing power in many cases passed into the control of members of Congress, merely rewards for party services, but rewards for services to party leaders.system destroys the independence of the |, separate departments of the Government, It tends directly to extravagance and official incapacity. It hinders and impairs that careful supervision and strict accountability by which alone faititful and efficient public service can be secured, It obstructs the prompt removal and sure punishment of the unworthy. In every way it degrades the civil service and the character of the Government. It is felt, I am confident, by a large majority of the members of Congress to be an intolerable burden and unwarrantable hindrance to the proper discharge of their duties, It ought to be abolished. The reform should be thorough, radical and complete. We should return to the principles and practices of the founders of the Government, supplying by legislation when needed that which was formerly an established custom. They neither expected nor desired from the public offices partizan service; they meant that public officers should owe their services to Gov ernment and {o the people; they meant that an officer should be secure in his tenure as long as his personal character remained untarnished and the performance of his duties satisfactory. If elected, I ment upon these principles, and all constitutional powers vested in the Executive will be employed fo establish this reform. The declaration of principles of the Cincinnati Convention makes no announce.- ment in favor of a single presidential term, On the currency question, I have frequently expressed my views in public; and stand by my record on the subject, I regard all laws of the United States re.latipg to the payment of public indebtedness under notes as a constitutional pledge, and a great obligation of the Government, Mount Royal Vale every afternoon, 160 which must in good faith be kept, It is The offices in these cases have become not | This shall conduct the administration of Govern-.my conviction that the feeling of uncer tainty, inseparable from an irredeemable paper currency with its fluctuations of values, is one great obstacle to revival of confidence and business, and to the return of prosperity, That uncertainty can be ended but in one way : the resumption of specie payments: but the longer the instability connected with our present money system is permitted to continue, the further will be the injury inflicted upon our commercial interests and all classes of society, If elected, I shall approve every appropriate measure to accomplish the desired end, and shall oppose any slip backwards, The resolution with respect tothe publie school system is one which should receive the hearty support of the American people.Agitation upon this subject is t¢ be apprehended, until, by constitutional amendment, schools shall be placed beyond all danger of sectional control or interference, The Republican party is pledged to secure such amendment, The resolution of the Convention on the subject of the permanent pacificationof the country, and the complete protection of all its citizens in the free enjoyment of all their constitutional rights, is timely and of great importance. The condition of the Southern States attracts the attention and commands the sympathy of the people of the whole Union, What the South most needs is peace, and peace depends upon the supremacy of thelaw, There can be no enduring peace if the constitutional rights of the only portion of the people are habitually disregarded.A division of political parties, resting merely upon distinctions of race or upon sectional lines, is always unfortunate and may be disastrous. The welfare of the South, alike with that of every other party in the country, depends upon the attractions it can offer to läbor, to immigration, and to capital, but laborers will not go and capital will not be ventured where the constitution and laws are set at defiance, and distraction, apprehension and alarm take the place of peace-loving and law-abiding social life ; all parts of the constitution are sacred, and must be sacredly observed—parts that are new, no less than parts that are old.The moral and natural prosperity of the Southern States can be most effectually advanced by a hearty and generous recognizance of the rights of all by all to second the eiforts of the people of those States to obtain for themselves the "blessings of honest and capable local government. If elected, 1shall consider it not only my duty but it will be my ardent desire to labor for the attainment of this end.Let me assure my countrymen of the Southern States that if I should be charged with the duty of organization or administration, it will be one which will regard and cherish their truest interest, the interests of white and colored people both equally, and which will put forth its best efforts in behalf of a civil policy which will wipe out forever distinction between North and South in our common country. With the civil service organized upon a system which will secure experience, efficiency and a strict regard for the public welfare solely in appointments, and a speedy, thorough and unsparing prosecution and punishment of all public officers who betray official trusts, withsound currency, witheducation unsectarian and free to all, with simplicity and frugality in public and private affairs, and with fraternal harmony prevailing among the people of all sections and classes, we may reasonably hopethe second century of our nation will, by the blessing of God, be pre-eminent of good feeling and a period of progress, prosperity and happiness, Very respectfull or ous follow citisens : R.B, Haves, THE CHURCHES.COTE STREET PRESBYTERIAN.Tha services in this Church were cone ducted yesterday by the Rev.R.Water.ston, M, A., of Union Free Church, Glasgow, Scotland, In the evening the subject of his discourse wag taken from Mark viii, 34 and 35, but more particularly the clause: ¢ Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me,” Our Lord’s plan of teaching was, first of all, to attach men to Himself; he showed them His glory, his wondrous power and tender grace ; and when they had mastered this lesson He turned the page and showed them the death He was to die.It was too hard a lesson for the minds of His disciples, Whom say ye that I am?had an easy answer: Thou art Christ, and the answer was hailed by our Lord with joy—‘‘ Blessed ait thou Simon Barjona.” But the lesson of the cross they were slower far to learn, and when Jesus began to teach it, Peter ventured to rebuke Him, in tones so offensive to his Master that Jesus said, ‘* Get theebehind me, Satan.” How shifting are the moods of Christian experience. At one time our Master calls us blessed, and five minutes after all is so changed that He calls us devil, It is immediately on the back of this signal failure on the part of Peter to enter into His Master’s spirit that Jesus utters the worldwide teaching of our text—¢ Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me,” Itisasif Jesus said, I have a cross ; I deny himself, lay by my glory ; everything that is mine is God’s, and I take up my cross and am content to lose my life for God’s sake and the gospel’s ; every one that comes after me must do the game; he must adjure his own wisdom and pride and glory and take up a cross that it is peculiarly his own; a .eross like mine, after mine, on account of mine, for my sake and the gospel’s.1.Let him deny himself and take up his cross, not my cross, Nothing is clearer in Scripture than that the eross of Christ stands alone.Looking at Calvary you see three victims, each in the agonies of death more or less prolonged ; to a certain extent they are the same—the nails, the beams, the attitudes appear the same, | yet they infinitely differ; the two thieves are suffering for their crime, but the other is the Holy Son of God, making atonement for sin, One thief is hanging on his cross, and all it means to him is that he suffers as an evil-doer—his sin has found him and the cross is a bitter ending to his sinful life, and the gloomy gate through which he is thrust into an.undone eternity, The other thief has taken up his cross, too, and as he remembers it to-day, Golgotha hag a hallowed memory. It Was a wonderful yet blessed passage in God’s provi- -dence to bring him from the passover-less | “jail face to face with the the Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world. It was the gate of heaven to him, the birthplace of his soul into eternal lifo—a deathbed of shame and sorrow, from which he is awakened by the Redeemer to everlasting glory, as a child is awakened out of a bad dream by its mother’s kiss, Either of .these cross-bearers stood infinitely apart from their fellow in the midst ; and the distance would have been as great if Peter and John, if Noah or Daniel, or Job or Jeremiah had occupied the thieves’ place that day.No atonement can be wrung out of the cross of any creature; whatever be the value of a saints’ tears or wounds, they are worthless to expiate guilt or save the soul.Itis by a cross we are saved, not by any cross of our own ; on Him was laid the chastisement of our peace, and by His stripes are we healed. We do not take up Christ’ cross ; Christ's cross takes us up, fully and alone, satisfies Divine justice; absolutely and alone is the ground of our redemption, lifts us above the flood- mark of sin and death.God forbid that we should glory save in the cross of Jesus Christ, by which we are crucified to the world, and the world is crucified to us, Thy cross, not mine, O Christ, Has borne the awful load Of sins, that none in heaven Or earth could bear, but God.2.Let us carry the cross after Jesus, We have many cares, many tears, many frials ; but where is our cross?Does not Satan tempt us?It shall not be so now.You may take easily 3 and oh, how hard to say, ¢¢ Geb thee behind me; Satan; thou sa.vorest not the things that be of God, but.the things that be of men, and get no cross, no crown I’ It is, if.we suffer with him, not from-him as naughty children, but with him.as martyrs only, that we shall be glori together, - Yet where are we suffering with hit Is not most of Chris.tianity either a delusion or an imipertinence? How fully in any lot we may enter into the mind of Christ. They were slave- Christains to whom Peter wrote, and what more heartless than slave.tasks and the weary round of slave-life; and yet, the very slave might be a Christian, shining in the glory of Calvery, in his mean daily life; when he loved to drink his cup of “bitterness for Christ's dear sake, to conse crate his thankless toil to the service of his Master, If so, his task might be the stepping-stone on which Christ should come, or links in the great chain of blessing, the end of which is fastened to the throne of God, GRACE CHURCH.The sermon at morning prayer was preached by the Rev.S, Belcher, who took for his text, Luke 6th chap, and 36th verse, Be ye, therefore, merciful, as your Father in Heaven is merciful.” It is one thing to be a professing Christian and another to be a real practical Christian—by that we mean to be in every respect a servant of Christ, The name ¢ Christian,” once looked down upon, is now honored, and proud ought we to be who are so named, The laws of man are carried out in a great measure through fear, For instance, if a man sytematically defrauds his customers, the law of his land will punish him, and the man will do his utmost to prevent its being known to the world in general that he is so defrauding people; but it is only fear that holds him back from committing more sins, The command contained in the text is not enforced by any promised punishment, If a man belongs to the Order of Foresters, Orange.men, or Free Masons, he considers that he ought.to abide by the rules and regulations of the lodge, as he believes that it would be prejudicial to the well-being of the lodge where he to act otherwise, and so, for his own sake, he acts in accordance with the same, Remember that Christianity is also a society, and one more venerable than any of those mentioned ; we are all personally interested in the well-being of the same.Ought we not therefore to be as careful to act in accordance with the rules laid down by God for the following of a Christian life? Our Blessed Saviour, who came upon this earth in order “‘ to become sin for us,” at times delivered sermons to the assembled multitudes, telling them of the will and of the law of God, In one of these, the longest delivered by Him, He, after telling all men to be merciful, lays this down as a criterion, ‘“ag my Father in Heaven is merciful.” ‘What is more admirable than mercy in the ruler of a country, the judge who occupies the seat of judgment or the monarch upon the throne. But mercy is not confined to these ; it is practised by the very humblest of God’s people. In the humblest cottage home we may find it, and if a child be allowed to go on ill-using domestic animals unchecked and show no mercy upon them, you may look forward to that boy’s becoming a very wicked, unmerciful being, unworthy of the name of à man.A few years ago, amongst medical students, a very cruel custom was in vogue, viz., vivisection, or studying the anatomy of an animal while living, In England, however, a law was passed, making it a criminal offence to do so, and thus this cruelty has been suppressed there by the strong arm of the law.England took the lead, we are proud to state, in this matter, as this cruel custom is still practiced in continental countries, There is in one of the most aristocratic quarters of London a large and commodious tablishment, known as Tattersalls, where Petting men congregate together and lay wagers upon the speed or endurance of this orof that horse, Near to this establishment is an institution perhaps one of the most useful and benevolent in the country. It is known as the St.George's Home, and here medical skill exerts its influence to alleviate the pain endured by the many patients who lie so thickly within its walls, As sporting men pass there every day, many of them jingling in their pockets the money they have won, a box was placed in position outside of the.door wherein these men might, had they felt so inclined, have deposited some of their wealth, and so help some poor fel- low-creature.After a time this box was opened, when ingide was found a quantity of broken tobacco pipes. So much for the pity of these.Verily we may say, ‘‘ the tender mercies of the wicked are oruel.” But in order that we may show mercy, we should take as our sfandard the verse following the text, ‘‘Judgé not and ye shall not be judged ; condemn not and ye shall not be condemned ; forgive and ye shall be forgiven.” It is useless for us to strive to unfasten the gordian knot with which our sins entangle us; we have a weapon given us by God Himself, and with the sword of forgiveness we cleave asunder the knot, and are free to go on, and with the same weapon reach heaven itself.Remember our God's mercy is infinite; He gave even His own Son to die for us, poor sinful creatures, though we are, It is related of Queen Victoria that when nineteen years of age, soon after she ascended the throne, the Secretary of State brought many papers to her for her signature; amongst these was the death warrant of a soldier. Her Majesty asked if there were no palliating circumstances in the case, but the reply came, ‘‘ None, your Majesty, the man has deserted from the army three times,” Observing the anxiety of his Sovereign, however, the Secretary mentioned that he had heard it said, on pretty good authority, that after all the man was a good soldier when in the ranks, and was very obedient.‘Thank God for that I” replied our neble.Qneen, and, taking the pen, wrote across the warrant, ‘‘Pardoned.” That was a sample of a monarch’s mercy. The Sovereign of Heaven looked down, and, beholding the wickedness of man, asked why He should not punish men as their sing deserve, The hosts of heaven are silent, the sins of men were very grievous, but with His loving mercy He sends one, a well-beloved Son.“It was the third hour and they crucified Him At the sixth hour darkness covers the face of the earth and continues until the ninth hour,” God looked over the cloud of darkness, and through the dense black veil appears the scroll, upon which is inscribed, in glowing letters, “ Forgiveness to all sinners,” The reverend gentleman concluded with an appeal to'all to come to the merciful God for forgiveness, and help to be merciful, as He also is merciful, “THY COMING YACHT RACE, nity Respecting the © little while, says a correspondent, we read in the papers of some one who has stuck a nail in his foot, or hand, or some other portion of his person, and that lock-jaw has resulted therefrom, of which the patient died.If every person in the world was aware of a perfect remedy for all such wounds, and apply it, then all such reports must cease, But although we can give the remedy, we cannot enforce the application, Some will not employ it because they think it too simple ; others have no faith in it when they read ; while others often think such a wound of small account, and not worth fussing over, until it is too late to do any good.Yet, all such wounds can be healed without such fatal consequences as follow them. The remedy is simple, almost always on hand, and can be applied by any one, and, what is better, it is infallible, It is simply to smoke such wound, or any wound or bruise that is inflamed, with burning wool or woollen cloth, Twenty minutes in the smoke of wool will take the pain out of the worst wound, and, repeated once or twice, it will allay the worst case of inflammation arising from a wound we ever saw.People may sneer ab the old woman’s remedy as much as they please, but when they are afflicted just let them try it.It has saved many lives and much pain, and is worthy of being printed in letters of gold and put in every home.AN EGGSHELLENT STORY.A London Turkish fortreeg standing on à plain about four square miles in extent, situated in Southeastern Herzegovina, near the Montenegrin frontier. The level country in its envirous is inhabited chiefly by Musgulmans, the town contains ing only a few wretched buildings, The fort itself is surrounded by à wall 6 feet; thick and 24 feet high, built of stane. The armament consists of twenty od.fashioned guns, The barracks will accommodate 800 men, and the blockhousez 2,500 more.Last December the fortress was revictualed by Raouf Pasha, whe forced a passage with 12,000 men from Belek through the pass to the Niksic plain, and at present the Turks are making desperate efforts to supply it and hold it.Of its importance, the London Academy Says : , Strategically, Niksic is a place of great - importance, hence the eagerness displayed by the Turks to relieve it and raise the siege, if possible, at any cost, for it standg at the junction of two roads leading from Herzegovina to Montenegro, If it were to fall into the hands of the insurgents it would strengthen their position on the immediate borders of Montenegro, and once established here the Turks would have the greatest difficulty in driving them out.: The little town of Widdin is now prominently figuring in the despatches as the rendezvous of a fleet of Turkish gunboats preparing to bombard Belgrade.Widdin 18 a fortified town in Bulgaria, on the right bank of the Danube, 140 miles east-south- east of Belgrade, It isa powerful position, being surrounded on the land side by morasses and defended by a strong citas del, by walls, and a fortified island in the Danube. It has always played an important part in the Turkish contests, and is called by the Turks ¢ The Virgin Fort,” from its never having been taken, It is in communication with the Black Sea at high water, and has a population of 30,000, Belgrade is one of the most ancient fortresses in Europe, is situated on the right bank of the Danube, and is the Capital of Servia. For eight centuries it has been the theatre of war.It was taken from the Greek Emperor by the Hungarian King Solomon in 1086.It was defended .by John Huniades against Mahomet II.from July to September, 1456, wag taken by Sultan Solyman in 1521, and retaken by the Imperialists in 1688, from whom it was again taken by the Turks in 1690.In 1716 Prince Eugene besieged it, and captured it after a sanguinary battle. In 1739 its fortification was demolished, and it was ceded tothe Turks, It wasretaken in 1789, and restored at the peace of Reichenbach in 1790, In 1806-13 the Servians had possession of it.In 1815 it was placed under Prince Milosch, subject to Turkey, In 1820 the fortifications were restored. In 1867 it was surrendered to the Servians by the Turks. The town has a population of about 80,000 men, It has a Turkish quarter, which slopes ta the Danube, and ispartially in ruins and a Servian quarter built up in modern style, It is the entrepot of commerce between Turkey and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.Mostar, where one section of the Turkish army, formerly at Gatzko, ls now concentrating, is the capital of Herzegovina, on the Narenta, 45 miles south-west of Bosna.Serai, It has a population of 10,000, and is a place of considerable trade in silk, grapes, wine, knives and weapons. It is surrounded by embattled walls, and cone tains ten mosques, a Greek church, and a .famous Roman bridge, With reference to the Danube, near Belgrade, which the Servians propose to plant with dynamite torpedoes, the London Standard’s correspondent says :— Every one knows what a broad, deep -and rapid river the Danube is, but it concentrates all its force and fury below the cataracts, at a pass called the Iron Gates, Here, opposite the small village of Tiche« viztha, it narrows from a width of a mile to about 180 yards, and with a depth, as far as can be ascertained from the violence of the current, of from 800 to 1,000 fathems, The mountaing on either side of this are very lofty,~ nearly 5,000 feet high,—but that on the Austrian side is 1,000 feet higher, and on the river side is nearly sheer for about 3,000 feet above the torrent. In fact, where it is not perpendicular it rather overhangs the water, When there is a very low Danube, the sharp, craggy points of subaqueous rocks begin to show themselves above the water, and between these the passage is most narrow, winding, aud shallow, and, in fact, can only be passed by steamers especially built for the purpose, oË light draught oË water, four paddle-wheels, and immense power. At the break-up of last winter the floating ice jammed among’ these crags, the waters backed up, laying all the Banatt and vast tracts of Hungary under water.Such a deluge was never known, and whether it was the hideous ruin which this caused first put it into the head : of the insurgents I do not know—all I do know is, that the blowing up of the precipice of Mount Scrieber (the Austrian side) would bring down many millions of tons of rock across the Iron Gates, and long before the obstruction could be removed a vast part of Eastern Europe would be turned into an inland lake, added to my distress was theevhsciousness of not procuring relief from ordinary sources. At times it seemed about impossible to stand so great was the distress. All of those severe neuralsic pains have disappeared. They were so bad at times I could hardly walk without some external pressure. They seem to have lett me like magic, suddenly, and have had no return ; all other symptoms have been It is to be presumed that the status of these gentlemen will be considered at the Council meeting to-day.The impression is that as they draw pay from the City Treasury they cannot legally occupy seats as Aldermen, TrE $8,000 PIz-STAND.— The taxpayers expect that the proposal to spend $8,000 on a pie-stand for the Mountain Park will receive its quictus to-day.$8,000 will go along way in disinfecting the disease- breeding spots that abound in the suburbs, ‘It might even givea drain to those miserable people on Pichette street, As for the pie-stand, there are plenty of men in Montreal who will jump at the chance to acquire the right to sell refreshments in the Mountain Park, and be quite willing to pay a good bonus and a tidy rent besides, MonrmAcwy.—The writ for a new election for Montmagny wasto have been issued last week, but the unseated and disqualified member, Mr.Landry, notified the Speaker - that he intended appealing to the Privy - Council against the judment of the Court, and demanded that no new election be had until such time as a deliverance shall be received from England, Speaker Fortin, acting upon the remonstrance of Mr.Landry, withheld the warrant, and the county will remain without representation until the Privy Council shall have spoken, This is the first appeal that has been taken against the operation of the controverted election law, and, as it involves very important constitutional points, its progress will be regarded with no little interest.TaE TREATMENT OF THE INSANE, —We expect that the case of Catherine McCallum will mark a new departure in the treatment of insane persons in this district, The cruelty of the old plan and the practicability of the new system has been so plainly demonstrated that it is only reasonable to suppose that the Government will at once give directions that all properly certified insane persons shall be promptly conveyed to their destined asylum.Circumstances may occur when it may not be convenient to transmit the poor unfortunate straight from the Court-room to the asylum, but such instances will be rare.Ordinarily there will be no excuse for any delay to speak of.We shall look anxiously for an official circular ou the subject.Civic TAXATION.—AS an instance of how the burden of taxation is being heaped up, the following submitted by a correspondent is edifying, In 1874 the assessed taxes of his premises amounted to $195.This year they amount to $420, or more than two thirds of his rent. And still the work of adding to the amount of civic indebtedness goes on, It has been suggested that the Citizens’ Vigilance Committee should be revived, Certainly some such organization is necessary to back up the efforts of the few Aldermen who desire to do right.A mass meeting should be called to consider this question.Means should be devised also to take the sense of the community upon the Commissioner question, ¥tseems to us that the present system is utterly “played out.” The taxpayers may rest assured that the movement towards reform will not be initiated within the Council. The majority of the members are well content with things as they are.The movement must begin among the people, Who will take the lead ?Tae Toroxrto CoNVENTION,—There was held in Toronto last week a Convention of the Reform Party.Under the pressure of the times and the urgency of the questions which an apparently declining influence have forced upon the attention of an organization that has exhibited some signs of internal decay, the gentlemen who control the Liberal columns have been constrained to call what may be construed into a council of defence. They have observed, although-they do not openly admit it, the progress of a process of disintegration, They have seen, if we are to credit the organ of Mr.Mills, M.P., demoralization in the ranks, and the evil effects of diverse opinions and conflicting counsels clashing with the general good of the party.Divided leadership has had sôme- thing to do with a half-hearted faith in principles once put forward with confidence as infallible rules of government.dictatorship of a man beyond whose range the country has rapidly grown, hag hurt the organization; it has dissatisfied the ardent spirits who camnot and will not be controlled by the prejudices of a by-gone age ; it has arrayed the newer intellect of what really is Liberalism against an gt.tempted subjection that would concentrate the entire strength of the Reform system in a Toronto newspaper office; it has alienated the class who can think for them.selver, and who will not bow down before a graven image called George Brown, Strangeto say, the first man to observe this revolutionary movement was Mr.Brown ” himself. The turn of the tide rippled against his feet, and he felt it so strongly that he was impelled to take action of a mac character to stem a current that one daypmaight sweep Him into the sea of pclitical oblivion. It is not a little remarkable that the man who has been the cause of all the trouble in the Liberal camp should be able to call to his assistance the very foremost among those who are feeling the effects of his policy. We have to cite a single case, the Premier. It ha: been argued that Mr.Brown rules the country, and that Mr.Mackenzie is simply his agent.Judgingfrom the obedient appearance of the latter at the Toronto Convention, it is but natural fo suppose that ail “Saefice can be exercised from the Globe office sufficiently powerful to draw the Premier and his available colleagues to any assemblage that Mr, Brown may originate, Taking very little interest in mere party arrangements, we can afford to look upon the Toronto gathering with & very impartial eye.It may be necessary for representative party The - men to meet for the consideration of important questions ugon which a distinct stand is to be taken, but the assembly of last week was for no such purpose. It was convened in order to bring about a better organiration for political ends.It was from the first a confession of weak ness, not alone in Ontario, but throughout the entire country. It was the surest possible indication that the leaders of the Liberal party believe that they had lost the confidence of the people, and that in the future bold strokes must be made to retain the support which is as yet commanded. The loss of county after county cannot but be severely felt, for each ad- verge verdict is a condemnation, Of this, the affair of last week was, to say the very least, a humiliating acknowledgment.More humiliating still must have been the announcement the Premier had to make to his colleagues and friends of the result of the election in the two Ontarios, where his personal influence was flouted, the promises of himself and those who spoke for his Government spurned, and the candidates upon whose success he staked so much rejected by people who had at the last appeal given such majorities to *Reform,” ‘ Conservatives are taking much comfor> out of the results of these elections, and making some commotion over a presumed ‘‘reaction.” We do not know that they have much to boast of.The distinct merits of the party in principle and personnel have had little to do with the issue.Conservatism of itself commands, perhaps, as little general confidence as the type of Liberalism which passes carrent to-day.In our opinion, the main cause has been the nonfulfilment of the gorgeous promises so lavishly made by the Liberal party oh taking office.Profession has not been followed .up by practice.Words have not been backed up by deeds, Purity has not béen any ‘'méré à characteristic of Reform than of ‘“‘’Toryism.” Economy has not been the rule in administration, on the other hand extravagance has obtained, Instead of a reduction of the civil service an army of political adherents has been provided for at the public expense.Instead of a decrease of outlay there has been an immense increase, and the prospect of another deficit is alarming Instead of income increasing it has decreased.Trade and commerce are almost dead, Manufacturing interests are moribund for the want of the protection which the country demands.Paying branches of trade have been diverted to the United States. Those are a few of the causes that have led to a material change in public opinion, and necessitated the calling of the convention. The picture is a sorrowful one—for Liberslism—but it should teach politicans the lesson that honesty, political as well as personal, is the best policy. We say it plainly—the Liberal Party in opposition, bristled with “¢ principles,” and the people accorded it belief at a time when the corruptness of another party was made apparently evident ; but the Liberal Party in power, has failed to put those principles into practice, and consequently is losing the control of the confidence of the public.TRE SIMPSON SUITS AND THE ‘‘ GLOBE,” When Senator Simpon made application in the Court of Queens Bench for a criminal information for libel against the publisher of the West Durham News, Chief Justice Harrison pronounced judgment, deciding that the required writ should be fyled against Mr, Wilkinson on three counts of libel.Mr.Tustioo Wilson followed in extended remarks upon the suit, in the course of which he said, referring to the ‘‘ Big Push” letter : ‘“It is, of course, a plain demand fo money, to oppose, it is said, the expendi ture by the Government candidates at th Toronto elections, and it is an admission that the writer, and those co-operating with him, had expended their strength which, 1 suppose, means their money, in other constituencies for the like purpose It is a letter written for corrupt purposes to interfere with the freedom of elections It is an invitation to the recipient as one with some others and the writer, to concu in the offence of bribery and corruption a the polls.” To this Mr, George Brown takes exception in four oolumns of the Globe. The pith of his article is summed up in [the following extract: ‘But of this Mr.Justice Wilson may rest assured : that slanders and insults shall not go unanswered, and if the dignity of of the Bench is ruffled in the tussel, on his folly shall rest the blame. We cast back on Mr, Wilson his insolent and slanderous interpretation. The letter was not written for corrupt purposes—it was not written to interfere with the freedom of elections —it wag not an invitation to anybody to concur in committing bribery and corruption at the polls—and be he Judge or not who says so, the statement is false.” In order that the tenor of Mr, Brown’s letter to Senator Simpson may be understood and remembered, we reproduce it : “* TorOoNTO, 15th August, 1872, “My Drar S1r.—The fight goes bravely op, but itis hard to work up against the enormous sums the Government candidates have in their hands. We here have expended our strength in aiding the out counties and helping our city candidates, but a big push has to be made on Saturday and Monday for the East and West divisions, if we are not to succumb to the cash of the Government. We could carry all three divisions easily but - for the cash against ug, and if we carry the first on Saturday the other two will go with us in spite of all the cash they can muster. We therefore make our grand stand on Saturday. There are but half a dozen people than can come down handsomely, and we have all done what we possibly can do, and we have to ask a very few outsiders to aid us, Will you be one?I have been urged to write to you, and comply accordingly.“ Faithfully yours, .‘GEO, BrOWN,” “‘ Hon.John Simpson, “&e., &e.” The construction Mr, Justice Wilson has put on the epistle is that which its plain and persuasive English has forced upon the understanding of every intelligent reader, If the letter is in cypher, and the remarkably lucid language means.some- thikg entirely different, Mr.Brown should state so, and have an end of the controversy. As matters stand now there is no such thing as accepting the Globes view og the business, nor does there appear to any reason for the Bench to tremble at the threats of the editor who finds himself in a troublesome position through injudicious correspondence.CITY NEWS.— Battersby’s handy exceeding its legal powers, as there is only a little over $50,000 of the loan for this special work remaining. It would he well for the Couneil to be made acquainted with what has been done so far, and the intentions of the Committee for the future, before any more money is voted, It is expected that the Council will decline to grant the $8,000 for a refectory on the Mountain Park.Such an THE ST.HENRI FIRE BRIGADE.Last Saturday afternoon a large number of people assembled on the Champ de Mars to witness the turn out of the St.Henri firemen, Punctually at 3 o’clock, amidst the ‘‘ tintinabulation of the bells, ” the procession arrived on the scene, and, aîter driving round the square, took up a position in the centre.Much admiration was expressed by those present at the display.A number of the Montreal firemen, with their Chief and Assistant Chiefs, were also on the ground, and, after being introduced to the members of the St.Henri Council, were shown the apparatus by Chief Benoit. The department posses a very fine American steam fire pump, two sets of reels, a hook-and-ladder waggon, which also carries six Babcock extinguishers with a number of charges for the same, axes, hooks, &c., and a patrol or salvage waggon, which carries two Babcocks. They also own about 3,000 feet of carbolized rubber and a quantity of canvas hose. The engine commanded universal admiration, it being for the most part plated, which portions shone like burnished silver. It is drawn by two very powerful horses, and is surmounted by a lamp embellished with the portraits of the different members of the fire committee who concluded the purchase of it.Next in order came the new-fashioned hose-reel, built under the personal superintendence of the Chief of the brigade, and an account of which has already appeared in these columns. It contained 1,500 feet of rubber hose, The other reel is an ordinary double reel resembling those in use by the Montreal firemen, The hook-and-ladder waggon also carries a roller, which holds about 300 feet of canvas hose. The other waggon is used by the police department for patrol, and also carries two Babcocks, so that, if while on patrol a fire is discovered, it may be extinguished without bringing oub the brigade, Altogether the turn out was very creditable to St.Henri.Chief Patton made a brief address, praising the efficiency of the brigade, as did Mr, Desjardins, M.P.P.Councillor Deseve said, in answer to a communication in the STAR from a tax-payer, that it was thought best to have the exhibition in Montreal, in order that the ‘‘ fire insurance agents and managers might see that St.Henri was not behind Montreal with regard to fire extinguishing apparatus, and might lower their rates on board, he fell into the canal and was drowned. At the Coroner’s inquest, the following statement was made by the engineer, Gottlieb Stroh, who accompanied the captain :— ‘‘ We were returning on Saturday night to the tug-boat, and had some difficulty to make our way ; the night was dark ; it was raining, with thunder and occasional flashes of lightning. We reached the canal, and when last I saw Callin on land he was sitting on a pile of lumber.‘When endeavoring to discover our whereabouts, I heard a noise, and when I looked towards the spot whence it proceeded, could see nothing of my friend.A moment afterwards a flash of lightning revealed Callin struggling in the water.I at once procured a plank and threw it towards him, but he did not seem to grasp it.Seeing this, I plunged in myself, and endeavored to assist him, but could not find him.I then felt myself sinking, and called aloud for help, when a watchman named Murray came to my assistance and helped me out.Poor Callin we never saw alive again,” The body was recovered about an hour after the sad occurrence. The deceased was a native of Buflalo, U.S., where he leaves a wife to mourn his untimely loss, The heroic conduct of the engineer, Stroh, in his endeavors to rescue his comrade, is most praiseworthy and is well deserving ciety. The body will be removed to Buffalo this morning. The verdict with an article defending, as usual what had been done, supplying our omission, and stating that it was Lafon who accompanied Riche on his mission, On such authority, which, of course, we looked upon as comingdirect from Lafon to the reporter of our morning contemporary, we joined Mr.Lafon’s name with that of Riche, and, he came in for his share of the animadversions which we bestowed upon the perpetrators of the outrage.e called upon the Chief of Police this morning, and he assured us that Lafon was not mixed up in the affair in any way."he real party who was connected shrinks from revealing his personality, as well he may, and has added to his misdeeds by allowing an innocent man to suffer from the unjust aspersions that have been cast upon him, This is cowardly in the extreme, Itis to us a matter of unfeigned regret that we have «been misled into doing Mr, Lafon the injustice of mixing wp his name with so infamous a piece of tyranny ag that which has been practised in this “ase.We can well.understand how Mr.T.afon’s feelings have been lacerated in having his name joined with those who have been guilty of so great an outrage, and of setting the law at the ‘machines were able to do perfect work in such grass, but after making one round the machines were preceded by a roller. The result of this test was that but one or two were able to leave the grass fairly cut, and two or three left it in a shameful condition, averaged about alike, Mr.Jno.Coleman, the chairman of the International Jury on Agricultural Implements, and the following members were present: E, Ollendorf, Argentine Republic; E.Keda Kenza, Japan ; James Bruce, Oregon ; Fermin Rosillo, Spain, and P.D.G.Paes Lema, Brazil.Mr, Coleman insisted that each machine should ‘make its lowest possible cut, which is a fair test of the ability of a mower to catch up lodged or down grass; but in this country the farmers generally do not desire to cut their meadows as low as they do in England with its frequent showers, or Holland with its facility to flood the meadows.Mr, Coleman gave universal satisfaction, his competency, fairness and honesty being evident to all.The Peerless, made by C.Russell & Co., Canton, O., succeeded better, perhaps, than any other in the down grass; and the next best work, according to the general verdict of the farmers, was done by Goodwins reciprocating screw machine, This latter and Wilber’s direct draft were novelties to most3present.The reciprocating screw translates the revolving motion of the wheels into the reciprocating motion of the knife, without cogs or gear wheels, the horses being hitched to walk, one in the cut swath and the other in the grass to be cut.The trampling of the grass, they claim, is no disadvantage, as the team cuts back against the previous course of the horse. The direct draft machine also leaves the grass standing up nicely, to catch the air and sun for drying.Trial was made by by the late Dr.Bernard, of this city, but owing to his malady breaking out, he was compelled to leave for the States, where he fell in with the daughter of a medical friend, which lady he ultimately married. His love for ardent spirits, however, soon ruined his once happy home, and his wife was compelled ‘to take in sewing, in order to keep herself and husband from starving, Her health breaking down, she went to live with a friend, and he came to this city, when, through compassion, Dr.Webster took pity upon him, and gave him employment, His subsequent history we have already given in the STAR.After reading this narrative, no one will doubt that this is only one more victim to strong drink, ACADEMY OF MUSIC.On Saturday evening Arrah-Na- Pogue ” was given in good style, and received with the usual enthusiasm, The old drama of the “Sea of Ice,” so well known at the Adelphi in London, and, like the ‘Green Bushes,” always popular there, no matter how often it is reproduced, will be given here to-night for the first time.As it depends greatly for success on the scenery, we have no doubt from the character the Academy has achieved for its artistic productions that nothing will be left undone to make the whole mise en scene complete, THE LACROSSE PLAYERS, The players are expected to arrive at the Depot at eight o'clock this evening, No doubt every lacrosse player and snow- shoer, with hosts of admirers of manly sports, will be present to give the boys a welcome cheer, A letter from Dr.Beers contains some interesting details respecting the appearance of the team at Windsor: —It was intimated that Her Majesty would be com: pelled &o leave within half an hour, but tor nearly an hour the game was continued with spirit, and interested Her Majesty very much, as she remained and followed the movements of the players and the fluctuations 6f the ball with evident pleasure and attention, several times rising in her carriage and looking backwards, and once or twice enjoying a hearty laugh at the sudden upset.or trip of a pale face or an Indian.Several times the ball rol'ed under the legs of the outriders’ horses, and one of Her Majesty's footmen, standing at her horses’ heads, smiling from ear to ear, looked as if he felt in the humor to desert his post and join in the scramble. It was a great pleasure to us to witness the real enjoyment which the game gave Her Majesty, and additionally pleasant afterwards to be told by members of her household that our visit was very welcome, and had given the Queen one of the pleasantest hours she had spent for many a long day.Princess Beatrice was intensely amused at the antics of the irrepressible ¢ Big John,” who excitedly shouted to his men in Iroquois.A few minutes before six o’clock the Canadians | won the game ; and General Ponsonby, advancing to thc captain, said that the Queen wished each member of both teams to be imtroduced to her by name.Mr.Lowther then introduced th: captain, to whom Her Majesty said, “I am very happy to see you all,” The captain then introduced the rest of the Canadian team. Her Majesty then did us an honor which shall never be obliterated from our hearts, that of handing each one of us her photograph, with her nam: written by herself upon cach picture. The Indian Chief was then introduced by the Canadian captain, and ‘‘ Big John” presented his team individually, to each onc of whom the Queen handed a similar photograph. When ‘‘ Big John” was introduced, he extended his arms, and bowing very low, raid : ‘“ How are you, Queen Vistoria ?” which Her Majesty seemed greatly to en- !.M [ES THE MONTREAL EVENING STAR.New Advertisements this P.M, [FOURTH EDITION.joy.After withdrawing, he returned to the side of her carriage, and, holding in his hand a beautiful basket of In- } dian grass made by his tribe, addressed her .impromptu as follows in broken English : : ‘Dear, good mother, I have present “ made in my village by my people, that basket, Please to take.” To which the Queen, taking it from his hands, said : “I am much obliged to you.I will be happy to take it.” After bowing graciously to the players, who were arranged in two lines, and expressing the pleasure the game had given her, Her Majesty drove oft the ground. The captain had asked Gen., Ponsonby if the Queen would object to * the players and Canadian visitors giving i her a hearty Canadian cheer, and having received ready permission, just before the carriage drove off, he called for “Three cheers for Her Gracious Majesty, our beloved Queen 1” which was responded to in the most loyal and heartiest manner. The personal appearance of the Queen was to every one of us a great surprise, as she looks ten years younget and much fresher in the face than we had been led to expect from her age and her sad bereavement. If was a great happiness to us to see her looking so well; and I must candidly say that I have not seen a recent photograph which does her justice. When we were preparing to leave the ground, Gen.Ponsonby came forward and informed us that the Queen had ordered a dejeuner for the players and all the Canadian visitors in the Orangery.I need not say how pleased and surprised we were at this additional mark of Her Majesty's condescension ; and I need not say that the entertainment was choice and recherche.‘The finest grapes and strawberries we had seen in England were on the table in abundance ; and can royal condescension further go when I tell you that not only was the fruit the choice growth of the Castle gardens, but that the Queen had expressly desired that we should have the strawberries which had received her personal care ?The following Canadians were present : Mr.F.Byrne, Ontario Government Agent, London; unquestionably, it had a legal right, but the law that conferred it is itself a very ‘“imperious act,” That any government would dare to use such haughty arrogance as to claim by law the right to exercise one-half the controlling influence of a board to which it contributes about five per cent.of the expense, is, to say the least, to assume a very overbearing position, and, more so, when the government is one of a different faith to that with which it interferes, and that after a pretense of having conceeded the right to manage its own affairs. Moreover, it is, under any circumstances, a very imperious act to put down one and set up another without even deigning to give a reason for so doing, as is the case in this instance.t us not, however, quarrel about words. If this act of the Government has been the means of opening our eyes to the humiliation and wrong of our position, it will not be without its benefits, It is a monstrous wrong that the rate-payers of Montreal should contribute so largely for the support of education, and have no direct voice in the management. And as you ‘“ think that a change is desirable,” it is to be hoped that all efforts will be directed to this end, and that the matter will not be allowed to rest till we are placed in a position of equality with any petty rural municipality, for the country parts, however small, elect their own School Commissioners, Yours truly, JAMES GREEN.THE WEATHER.Temperature in the shade, by standard Thermometer, observed by Hearn, Harrison & Co., Opticians and Mathematical Instrument makers, 243 and 244 Notre Dame street :—6 p.m.yesterday, 790 ; coach-house, the property of Col, D'Orsonnens, of this place, were struck by lightning, and set on fire It was first discovered by the watchman, who, acting with great presence of mind, immediately released the horses, and also succeeded in saving a carriage and a few other things. In the meantime, Chief Constable Wolton, whose attention was early attracted by the glare to the burning buildings, aroused the neighbors and with them hurried to the scene, As it was useless attempting to save the stables, all efforts were directed to securing the safety of the dwelling-house of Col.D’Orsonnens, and, thanks to the dispatch with which the neighbors sent up their water-carts, and the good well upon the premises, water was plentiful, and the fire was prevented from spreading, Mr, Beaubien, M.P.P,, with a large staff of his farm hands, on hearing the alarm sounded, were quickly on the spot, and rendered invaluable assistance, as also did, among others, Messrs.Carsley, Reed, Burton, Robson, Rogers, &e.The coachman also certainly deserves great credit for the endeavors he made to save property, in doing which his hands were considerably burnt. It would be well if, in country places, the village authorities would keep at hand some simple means of extinguishing fire, as, owing to the absence of these, and the great delay that necessarily takes place before assistance can be procured, a loss is often incurred which might be prevented if the danger was met at the outset.ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT.A YANEREE MONTREALER.—We do not zee what you are Friday last, a little boy two and a half years old, the son of Mr.Laverty, of Cote des Neiges, fell into a deep well on the premises, and would have been drowned bub for the courageous act of a young servant girl named Lizzie Buckley.Seeing the child meet with the accident, the brave Lizzie rushed to the spot, jumped in, and held the boy above water until her cries brought assistance, when both were rescued very much exhausted. On asking this noble girl if she knew that the well was deep enough to drown her before she made the plunge to save a human life, she answered that she ‘‘ neither knew nor cared.” Such a young heroine should be decorated with the Humane Society's medal, and given something more substantial as a reward for her brave conduct.A RAILWAY CASE.On clothing manufactory of Messrs, O’Brien, McGill and College street, on the 6th of May last, and stealing therefrom, Warner being convicted, the sentence on Rolling being deferred until Thursday next, Henry Flanagan, a clerk in the Custom House, wag charged with stealing a purse from the person of J.B, Roun on the day of the Fete Dieu while the latter was looking at the procession.By the defence it was proved by Mr, Millan, of the Customs, that the accused showed the purse openly to the employees as having found it, and was advised by Mr, Millan to retain it until an advertisement appeared for it in the papers. On this evidence being adduced, the Crown at once gave up the pro- gsecution, and his Honor ordered the discharge of the accused, Mr, D, MacMaster for the defence, COLE'S CIRCUS, HIPPODROME AND MENAGERIE, It is often said that there is nothing new under the sun, and more especially in regard to a circus performance is this aphorism applicable.Mr.W.W.Cole, determined to give something new, and that would entirely outrival the old sawdust ring, has established a hippodrome, and is the first to enter the Dominion with such a monster show.He has secured the Lacrosse grounds for locating, and, between rent and the municipal license, has invested over a thousand dollars in advance of the leviathan exhibition making its appearance, Mr, Cole comes here from ‘Western Canada, where he has met with unparalleled success, the citizens of Toronto, Hamilton, London, St.Catharines and other places turning out in thousands to see the promised novelties. In addition to the Hippodrome, of which we will give a description hereafter, there will be an Aquarium, Menagerie and Circus, with a performance which such papers as the Toronto Globe, Mail and Hamilton Times speak of in the most glowing terms.Mr.Cole opens here on the 25th, and will remain three days.YOUNG TAYLOR LOCKED UP.It is stated to-day, on 'what we believe to be good authority, that young Taylor, whose name has become notorious in connection with the illegal arrest on Wednesday last, has been locked up in a cell of the Ontario street Station until he can be shipped off on a voyage to Australia. On calling at the station in question to-day, the Sergeant in charge said he could give no information in the matter, and referred our representative to Sub- Chief Naigle, The Sergeant had evidently been directed to keep these illegal proceedings dark.On Saturday last, when our reporter called at the same station, the Sergeant on duty, who admitted he was the responsible officer on duty on Wednesday evening, denied all knowledge of the young man Taylor having been arrested and brought to the station, and also assured us he was not then there. Now, there has been an amount of gross deception all round in this matter, as Detective.Lafon assured us to-day, and we do not doubt his word, that Taylor was taken to the Ontario street station on being arrested, and has been incarcerated there ever since. It cannot be that the Police Committee will overlook all these illegal and mysterious proceedings, which are so calculated to bring the administration of the law into contempt, seventy degrees was subjected to the test usually applied by retail dealers to satisfy customers.A lighted match was held to an open vessel of it without ignition taking place.A small portion was put into a can, shaken up and a light introduced, when an explosion occurred, showing that the stuff becomes explosive upon mixing with the oxygen of the atmosphere.‘The speaker claimed that oil waterproof paper for covering jars used in preserving, etc., may be made by brushi over the paper with boiled linseed oil, an suspending it over a line to dry.A PLEASANT DENTRIFICE.—A natural dentrifice is the common strawberry. Its juice, without any preparation, helps to dissolve the tarterous incrustations on the teeth, and improves the breath, Use with the juice a tolerably soft tooth- rush.MENDINGE GLAss,—For mending valuable glaes objects which would be disfigured by common cement, chrome cement may be used, This is a fnixture of five parts gelatine to one of a solution of acid chromate of lime. The broken edges are covered with this, pressed together, and exposed to sunlight, the effect of the latter being to render the compound insoluble | even in boiling water, SEDATIVE WAIER,—An excellent sedative water for external application for bruises or aches of any kind is composed of ammonia two-ounces; tincture of camphor, two drachms and a half; common salt, two ounces; and water, two pints.Mix and dissolve without heat, This is largely used in France, and is sold under a patent medicine name, It is an excellent liniment for cattle when strengthened by the addition of ten drachms more ammonia.Krrrine WEEVILS FROM BAëon.—Take cane molasses and apply to the flesh parts carefully, as much as will adhere, then sprinkle on a3 much ground pepper (the kind commonly found in stores, called black by some) as will adhere, and hang up in smoke-house, or any place you wish to keep it.In order that the above may be effectual, it must be applied immediately after smoking, for if the germ or nit, or egg from which the germ 1s hatched, is lodged on the meat before the application is made it will not be effectual. With this applied, the meat keeps nice and sweet.EXERCISE.— The great advantage of walking in the open air over other exercise lies in the fact that every muscle in the body is greatly and uniformly brought into action by the swing of the legs and the arms, and, consequently, of the trunk in a vertical direction. The undulations made by the head, chest and abdomen, in a vertical plane, are thus not only according to Hogarth’s line of beauty, but also in that tending to perfect health.Every internal organ is gently stimulated tomore robust action.Never, in a common walk, does a person breathe twice the same air, because he is constantly changing his position, This fact alone is of incalculable advantage, Some writers contend that the re-breathing of air once partially used is one ofjthe most fertile caures of consumption. The most favorable time for wallx- ing is about mid-day in the winter, and in the morning and toward evening in the summer, Youre HOUSEEEEPERS.—Arrange your work
