Year of Service. The Outremont Protestant Schools will reopen for the session 1934-1935 on Wednesday, September 3th, at the usual hour.ne Full particulars in connection with the registration are found in the regular advertisement appear- img elsewhere in this newspaper.be favorably received. In very few children suggest disappointment. The holiday has been lon For the most part the announcement will have we heard any of the, and althougn instances most pleasant, still its very length has brought a keen desire to again assemble in classes, where the more regular habits of life can be resumed.Few changes have been made in the¥%—————— ———— interval. The schools have been completely renovated, as is usual, and the necessary repairs effected. No increased accommodation has been provided, for it is not anticipated that the school population will show any appreciable increase. It is felt that at least one hundred addition pupils can be absorbed in the present accommodation without overcrowding.A few changes have, of necessity.heen made in the teaching staff. In the High School department Miss Virginia Hume, B.A., (now Mrs.Bailie) has retired, and will be replaced in Grade VHIA, by Mr.William I.Cook, from Grade VII, of the Guy Drum- mond School.Miss Mabel Howard, who had charge of the Physical Training Department on the girls’ side, was married during the vacation, and in her place will be Miss Barbara McPherson, a graduate of the Physical Training School of Mec- Gill University.Three members of the Guy Drummond School staff were also married, in the persons of Miss Sheila Saunderson, Miss Jessie King and Miss Edith Chodet, the latter one of ‘the French specialists.Their places will be taken as follows: Miss Margaret Templeton, Miss Mina Winter and Miss Gladys Cullen.Another new member of the Guy Drummond School staff will be Miss Mary Smeed, replacing Miss Catherine Me- Gibbon, who resigned in January last.It is of interest to note that the first oversea exchange will be in effect in Outremont this year, when Miss L.M.Gilmour, from Scotland, goes to the Guy Drummond in place of Miss Evelyn Johnston, who will spend the year teaching in Scotland.Miss Gilmour comes very highly recommended, and is the sister of the Rev.M.Gilmour, assistant at St.Andrew’s and St.Paul's, Montreal.Twenty Years of Service A very careful analysis of the school prospectus for the coming year has been made, and it reveals many points of real interest. It is of high interest to note that Mr.W.Al- Jen Walsh, principal of Strathcona Academy and superintendent of Ou- tremont Protestant Schools, commences with this term his twentieth year of service in Outremont.Much has been accomplished during that period, and this paper suggests and anticipates that this fact shall be fittingly recognized some time during the course of the year.It is regrettable that the schools will reopen without a chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr.Hector Mackay, who occupied that office, having passed away in July last.Mr.Mackay had served his city as a member of the School Board for eleven years, and was twice its chairman. His kindly advice and intense interest will bË greatly missed.A change is noted in the course of study for the coming year.In Grade X., Biology replaces Botany, and Physics again becomes a compulsory subject for all except those following course I, (general). It is noted that pupils who now desire to enter the Intermediate class in the School for Teachers, Macdonald College, must pass in ten units of work, in place of eight, as heretofore. In Grade X,, a complete change has been made in the course in English Literature, the old “permissive” course being replaced by the new “regular” course. The “regular” course will gradually be introduced in this way, so that no hardship will be imposed in a financial way.In conformity with this policy, the new course in Arithmetic will be introduced only in Grade III, V, VII {Continued on Page Two) Y.ALHLA.SUMMER CAM LOSI AND EXHION Concert and Handicraft Display In Y” Building In September. The Horne Avenue, Outremont.Mr.Lang, employed as a spotter in a local dry-cleaning plant, went to work, according to statements, on Thursday morning suffering from a slight cut on his nose. The cut, it is stated, became infectad in’ some way, blood poisoning setting in and developing with such rapidity .that death resulted on Friday. He leaves a widow, and would have celebrated the second anniversary of his in the ‘Y’ building | MONTREAL, FRIDAY, AUGUST 31st, 1934.— Winners In Rochon Garden Plot Contest The final decision of the judges in : the Rochon Garden Plot Contest has been handed down by Mr.Phil M.- Kenna, chairman. The Contest has been followed with the closest interest since its inception in May las:.So keen was the competition, reports Mr.McKenna, that he and his confreres, Messrs.Pascal and Lemay, had the greatest difficulty in deciding the ultimate winners.Awards were based on four cardinal points, viz., general condition (weeding, .watering, etc); symmetry of design; color effect and harmony, and selection of plants.Since the competitio 1 will undoubtedly be repeated another summer, it would be well for garden- lovers to bear these in mind. The ! committee, after consultation wih Rochon, sponsor of the | Alderman Contest, have decided, in fairness to everyone, that the prizes shall be | awarded as follows: $10.00 to first, and $5.00 to each PAGE TWO Important Details Mark Opening vw of Outremont (Continued from Page One) and VIII, when the Canadian Problem and Practice Arithmetic will take the place of Arthy’s Graded Arithmetic. Also in Grades VII and IX, Grammar and Composition are being replaced by a more practical course in English Usage and Composition.Pupils in Grade IV will be happy to know that the amount of homework is being reduced, and that only two lessens, or une half hour of work, is suggested. In order to do this il was necessary to extend the school day to three-thirty instead of three o'clock. It is unfortunate that a change had to be made in the fees in the High School Department, but this was lo comply with instructions to this effect from the Montreal Central School Board. The monthly fee has been increased fifty cents a month, in Grade VIII and IX, seven- y-five cents a month in Grade X, and one dollar a month in Grade XI This certainly is n retrograde step im education on the Island of Montreal, and we hope it is only of a temporary nature. The practice of promoting pupils en this year’s work has been found to work so satisfactorily that it will be continued, Boys and girls will be happy to work from day to day towards a successful year, rather than Bates.Protestant Schools wait for “final” examinations to know their fute. Those pupils who are successful and are promoted on teachers’ recommendations leave school on the fifteenth of June, whereas the less fortunate must remain till the twenty-second.This in- |centive, along with prizes, medals and j~cholarships, greatly assists pupils to maintain a high standard and en- thance the prestige of the school, | The school statistics for the year 1933-1934 are most interesting. They show a total enrollment in the three schools of 2788, looked after in 75 classes, with a regular staff of 87.This rives a class average for all ‘classes, high school and publie school of 47,2.It is also pleasing to note that over $0 per cent of the pupils were successful in being promoted. The boys and girls of the City of Outremont should feel happy to return to school, after such a long vacation, tu such satisfactory conditions. They have every reason to be proud of their school and of the city in which they live.It would not surprise me at all if the short story were to become the tmort popular This is No.2 of a series of 12 articles on Skeet Shpoting.Cut it out. When all have been clipped, you will have a complete write-up of this sportsman’s sport which is rapidly hecoming the vogue across Canada.BOND'S Cut Rate Drug Store 275 BERNARD, NEAR PARK Fr —— EE 1 | BUY and SAVE at PRESCRIPTIONS CAREFULLY COMPOUNDED We Call and Deliver FOR FAST DELIVERY Phone DO.6263 White — .64c.Blue — .79c.Yellow — $1.49 KOTEX FORHAN'S New Wondersoft Large 19e | 34c RUBBING | cues CLAPP'S 5 4562 + 250 Fresh Insulin , ALCOHOL ‘BABY SOUPS - — 100 yd Dash, Boys, Senior: Jack STOCK UP + i Crosby 1st; Tommy Gibson 2nd; Ren- i a8 ( © m m e rc e = | nie Cooper 3rd.Running High Jump, DR.CHASE à sensational , OUTREMONT PROTESTANT SCHOOLS Boys, Senior: Ed.Jones Ist; Alcid, BISODOL vane for DAY AND EVENING EDUCATION FOR BUSINESS Noel 2nd: Renme Cooper Gu.Nerve Food Lx +5 49c Running Broad Jump, Boys, Senior: Alcid Noel 1st; Henry Picard 2nd; Rennie Cooper 3rd.Thursday Asseciate in Commerces 1 Two , Yeon of College work in Commerce; evening division three ission requirement, high school podustion, Subjects included, Economics and Political Science, Ac- ‘countaney, English Commerciel Law, Advertising, Financial Orgenization, Public ne, Business Administation, Mathematics, French, German, Ststistice Method, Psychology.Single subjects may be taken in The Protestant Schools of the City of Outremont will re-open on Wednesday, September 3th at 9 am.Former pupils only will be received dn the morning and new pupils from one to three m the afterncon, Pupils will register as follows and will _ 39e 55¢ KLEENEX | DR.LYON'S Two 25c tubes Colgate.s Ribbon Dental Cream A Colgate tooth brush of Evening Divison.Co-educationsl .only De received in the sehoo! located in their particular Horseshoe Tournament — Senior: Reg.25e TOOTH POWDER Guaranteed Quality Day Business School: Complete business, stenographic end secre- district :—- Chas.Mclean 1st; Ernie Cooper 2nd; for years of gh shoal Lr Oe PUBLIC SCHOOL GRADES Remnie Cooper 3x0.Sorsai—cius|| 1GC 2" 49¢ |ALL3 FOR 49c 1 0 4 6 0 4 + 4 4 + 4 0 4 66 oo ! ‘ IL.girls 17: Midget J | —- Evening Institute: Admission requirement, elementary school gradu- District LAired foyce Schoo!t, Fast of Champagnenr, Herb Fisher par director, Referee || ation or higher.Commercial and Technical Certificate courses. Also single 2.; .or ERE : TT Tm es a) AY, courses in bookkeeping and accounting, business arithmetic, business District TH Guy Drummond School, Shamrock Grounds Tuesday | National English and Con , business science, French conversation, short- West of Champagneur Running Bases—J.Dopera; Ob- SEIDLITZ vos 10° PEROXIDE hend, typewritins, mechanical drawing, practical mathematics, chemist ’ ' stacle Race—M.Ambroisi; Jockey Rox \\ 5 dlecticity, .Le.rt" District TT Strathcona Academy. For children from ans || Race—A.Carfagme and M.An- elt FULL STRENGTH Arts and Sciences district within the Cite of Outremont.broisi: Wheel Barrow Race—d.Vor.e 16 Oz.; : Kidney doni and H.Costanzi; Leap-Frog DODD’ S Pills’ 35° 1 The po "Éserves * 1 iv 'anster ils tro ne ier joie C FIRST AND SECOND YEARS OF COLLEGE WORK he Board re eves Fee d rani pupils irom one Race—, J.Ethier and P.Ambroisi; 0 9 Dey and evening programmes for high school raduates.Co-educa- strict to another at any time, Back-to-Bark Race — P.Occhionisi es Gonal.Diploma of Associate in Arts, Science or Commerce in two years + and A.Mocchione; Shve Rece — M, E Se ts Es À Qe vision, three year).Senior Matriculation in one year (Evening The Principals of the Public Schools will he in attendance on | Ambroisi; Marathon—A.Carfagme.psom a S 1 Lh, 0 vening Bier, mo ves.English, French, German, Latin, Mathematics Biloay Chemistry, Physics Electrical Communications, Natural Science, Account ancy, Economics History, st Public Speaking, Commercial Law, Psychology, Philosophy, Fine Arts, Drame.Evening High School ABS.& C.© Pills (Bottle of 100) Full Strength 10c Softball—All Stars 5: Bats 2.—- Thursday Softball—Shamrock 8, Royal Nord CALBISMA Mee se 6; Maisonneuve 24, Shamrock 2 HIGH SCHOOL GRADES : i 5 oD Referee: Chas.Barbour, play direz- Sept.Ah.am.in their respective schools to give any advice the parents may require.Tuesday, me i Grade- VIL to XT Inclusive.Absorbent R For employed youns 1g of ig sex.Graded four year courses rade ' COUSINE tor.COTTON Sterilized 29° ! !
