| 1934 number of men living in Laurier and |’ St.Michael’s wards and we will naturally take those families where the greatest need exists, It is regrettable that so many millions of dollars have been spent for direct relief without any effect other than having created ‘professional paupers, To my mind, no man or woman should receive money for nothing, unless they are ill or too old to work. You may rest assured that T will exert every means possible to fight for necessary improvements and 1 hope that it will only be a matter of a short time before there will be a definite policy adopted: ‘No work—no pay.’ Wishing you every success, Yours faithfully, MAX SEIGLER, Alderman, Laurier Ward.” The undertaking should, therefore, be of immense benefit to the entire North End, and great credit is due all those who have taken an active part in it.MacVICAR MEMORIAL CHURCH NOTES A most delightful Social Re-union was held in the Lecture Hall of Mac- viear Memorial Church last Tuesday night when a very attractive and enjoyable programme was given. The occasion was the celebration of the Anniversary of the opening of the present commodious edifice, and proved a most successful event in every wgy.Bright piano numbers were played by Mrs.W.R, McLeod; the Violin selections by Norma Me- Lean, accompanied by Willis P.Malone on the Piano were received with great enthusiasm; Mrs.Percy Hall's readings and stories were captivating, while the solos of Messrs J.L.G.Brown and Percy Hall received well merited merited applause.A quart- cette composed of Messrs.Miller.Davies, Hodgson and Ruiter rendered four selections in lighter vein which greatly pleased the large aud- ionce.Mrs, R.S.Langlands, soprano, delighted the congregation with her songs.Rev.Wm.McLean expressed the greetings from the Outremont Presbyterian Chureh in a very encouraging speech.Mr.A.M.Stewart, chairman of the board of managers, ex- +— —+ æ 4 | ry — general are due for the success which Max Seigler A Representative of Laurier Ward at the City Hall who has been of material assistance in the securing of the new street lighting for Park Avenue.Y.M.H.A.JUNIORS TO PRESENT “ALI BABA” For the first time in the history of the Y.M.H.A.has such an elaborate play as the dramatization of the famous Arabian Nights story—*“Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves"—been undertaken by the Junior Dramatic Group. To those people who are seriously interested in amateur theatricals for children this step should prove very welcome news.On the afternoons of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 2nd, 3rd and 4th, while all the boys and girls of the city are free from their worries of school, and lessons, and tests, the Junior Dramatic Group will present “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” in the Y.M.H.A.Auditorium, 265 Mount Royal West. The play consists of four acts and seven scenes, and requires five complete changes of scenery.Every scene is very picturesque and some of them are even full of mystery—as witness the cave scene which actually rolls open upon the use of the words “Open Sesame” and closes magically when ordered, “Close Sesame.” Amongst the cast chosen are Morris Miller as Ali Baba; Sylvia Levine as the fair and faithful Morgiana, who so cleverly outwits and finally exterminates the cruel crew of robbers; Willie Finer who glowingly portrays the “vicked, wicked Hassan; Sidney Phillips, as Kasim _whose greed cannot be rivalled even by Fred Kerner, the Tailor; and then Saul Teblum, who in the role of Abdullah will not fail to captivate the hearts of the young ladies as well as those of their older sisters and mothers.Madge Evans has gone in for bangs in her new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture “The Show Off.” Her hair is parted in the center and softly waved off the face, with ringlet ends.Across the forehead from temple to temple are flat bangs in the Victorian manner, with only the ends curled flat to form a soft curled line that almost conceals her forehead. Our most striking paradox of this age is a nation going broke buying prosperity.—Brandon Sun, pressed the thanks of all assemblies and Mr.J.I.Leitch thanked the ladies for the tasty refreshments served.Dr.J.G.Potter provided.a 0 - + DR.E.M.BEST ACTIVITIES Fairmount - St.Giles Hears Y.M.C.A.National Secy.As Guest Speaker The first North Branch YMCA.! and regretted that nothing short of a radical change in the order of things would make for a betterment.Ilus- trating his arguments, he pointed out that in Great Britain one million people were living there are a number of things which go into making a picture about which it has no inkling.Important among these is the building of miniature sets and their uses.Miniauture sets are quite new in picture production, made necessary by the demand for perfect detail and to assist in unfolding the story in the most convincing manner. These little sets are built to scale from paimings and plans made by the ant department. After they are erected, the director and production crew go through the scenario, scene by scene.| A set of dolls, used for characters, are moved about by the director through the sets as he expects to move the actors through the real sets. The cameramen watch for the best “angles” from which -to photograph the action, the electricians concentrate on lighting each character was at the time of the murder Could he or she have seen the deed committed? Was it logical that they would be at the place they declared they were at the time of the crime?Such North and South Carolina are so priviliged. The ratio is only sligtly larger in Georgia and Alabama, with 200 theatres each; in Florida with 259, Louisiana with 234, Tennessee with 230 and Kentucky with 426.Conversely Ohio permits most of its 442 theatres constant operation Michigan, with five hundred theatres forbids Sunday screenings only in one city, Holland.Wisconsin's 490 theatres are wide open.Indiana has Sunday inibitions in nineteen towns, affecting only a small percentage of its 277 houses.Illinois permits all but one of its 488 motion picture theatres unrestricted operation, Wisconsin, with nearly four hundred, has local option liberally exercised. Some Liheral Western States Arkansas repealed its rigid “Blue Law” a year ago, and seventy-five of its 168 theatres now operate Sunday under local option.Oklahoma permits all but ten of its 356 theatres Sunday operation.Texas allows 997% of its nearly 600 theatres Sunday showings, although forbidden in some communities during church service hours.Minnesota's nearly 400 theatres operate undisturbed.North Dakota voted last October on the question of repealing its antiquated “Blue Laws.” Organized opponents of repeal succeeded in defeating the liberals by a narrow margin of 800 out of a total of 160,000 votes cast, leaving 200 theatres under a handicap that has closed many.South Dakota long a battle ground, now permits its 200 theatres to operate undisturbed.Theatres of the larger cities of Iowa operate Sundays under local option, while the small towns drive their picture fans elcewhere for entertainment.Nearly 500 theatres are affected.Nebraska closes only nineteen of its 284 theatres on Sunday under local option.Colorado with 263 theatres; the second with Casey sending the rubber home on a pass from Eagan to even up the score.Spectators saw a fine exhibition of net-minding when the East End Goaler frustrated all the hope of Langan and Gilmore.Young Barlow made some wonderful saves for the Irish aggregation, showing that the Saints were determined to win.The third and last period ended with the score 1-1, requiring overtime.Ledoux came to the fore making the score 2-1 after taking a pass from “Blondy” Gilmore again who played, alongside of Langan, the best game of the season. With two minutes to}.go in the extra stanza, Eagan tied it up again on a lone rush, which necessitated another ten minutes to decide a winner.George Langan was the star of the game registering the two winning counters. Both teams played a good game with O'Connell holding the edge of play.Frank McNally saved many a goal by his powerful checking and was effective all night.Griffin, Cleary, Blouin and Sheeran also helped in every way possible to bring another win to their Alma Mater.Big Ledoux wasn’t as good as he usually is, but lets hope that he’s just holding everything for the final game at the.Forum.For St.Gabriels, Casey, Ea- gan and their netminder were the stars and the boys took their defeat: well, + + + + + & + + + + + + 4 à HAWKS CLOSE TO ALL-STATES TEAM # Chicago Black Hawks, of + the National Hockey
