began to unwrap the papers covers with the indifferent manner of a cook peeling an onion. After he had removed several layers of paper and cardboard, a radio set stood before our awed gaze. There it was, of beautifully polished wood, ultra modernistic in design, with lovely little knobs, and an impressive dial covered with mysterious numerals.claimed.As the man, with complete disregard for our best rug, swung the box around to tinker with the connections, we peeped into the inner sanctum where the many new features-—em- phasized so frequently in the same advertisements—lay snugly tucked away. All New Here, were the new-style tubes, each busy little tube doing the work — of two, each covered with a silvery jacket of that new silvery substance, each resting on four instead of two pL and each exactly matched to the temperament of its mate. Here, the new loud-speaker, louder than any loud-speaker ever before put into any set, so loud, that one not only heard those fainter notes that had previously escaped one’s ears, but the respiratory sounds of the musicians as well. Here, the new tone-controller that prevented the shriller notes from bouncing against the ceiling, to the great annoyance of opera lovers. Here, the new static-eliminator, which not only climinated static, but could be depended upon at crucial moments to eliminate the best programmes. Here, the new aerial-elim- inator which enabled one to receive twice the distance without an aerial as one could with an aerial. And here, under our admiring eyes were all the other devices and gadgets, numbering according to the advertisements, no less than forty. It was, indeed, the Set Supreme. The service-man like some scientific high priest, guarding his scientific holy of holies, quickly pushed the set against the wall so that our profane eyes were no longer permitted to gaze at the fascinating mysteries of its interior, and connected a wire into the carpet-cleaner plug.Having completed this difficult operation, he touched a little switch on the modernistic surface of the set and the dial was immediately illuminated by a mellow, golden light. We leaned breathlessly forward, eager for the miracle that was about to occur. For a few agonizing moments nothing issued from the four- legged tubes, the loud-speaker, and the various eliminators. The high priest noticing our expression of dismay, shifted his juicy cud of tobacco, and informed us blandly that “She’s warming up.” In another moment gurgling sounds broke the profound silence of the room.We stiffened. The high priest turned the dial slightly-—another gurgle, and the veil bad been rent.We were face to face with the wonders of the ether waves.“This is Station XYZ.For the next fifteen minutes you will be entertained by the Expansive Garter and Girdle ompany.” The voice was as mellifluous and polished as the voice of some super- maitre de hotel recommending some exceptional dish to a noted guest. It came to us absolutely free of distor- tion—limpid as the sound of a fine bell.We settled down to whatever the Expansive Garters and Girdles had to offer. The bored high priest had already departed. The room suddenly filled with mu- sic—exotic music, suggestive of desert nights and circus side shows; the shrill flutes piping so loudly that at any moment we expected to see a couple of cobras charmed out of the depths of the rubber-plant pot.“Ladies and gentlemen of the radio audience, the Expansive Garter and Girdle Company will now take you to Egypt that age old land of habit of pulling up close to the car ahead before applying the brakes; it is much easier riding and much more cconomicaly to stop gradually.Balky Motor One of the simplest tricks to warm the engine of a car before taking it out of the garage on a cold morning, er (like those used in bathrooms with a heating coil and bowl reflector) on a box in front of the car radiator. The heater is turned un before breakfast A canvas or blanket is thrown over the radiator and heater to train the heat into the car radiator, breakfast is catén and then the cngine is a little wafmer than it was.Double Check
