to the splendid new ~hins placed into the Mediterranean service and which have heightened the irter- est of traveler: in the sunny lands surroundinz this historic sea, as well as to the lew rates of exchange prevailing in certain of these lands, which er from America.i “Egypt,” said Mr.Bulger, “:eems| to be the center of this magnetic re-| gion, and our hookings for Nile steamer trips are already far ahead of last year. One ceases to wonder at this sudden renaissance of interest in the ancient Land of the Pharoahs when one considers that, due to the present low exchange value of the English pound, visitors from America can live and travel there very reasonably indeed. For instance, one can stop at the very exclusive Hotel Shepherds in Cairo for only about $5.00 a day in American money, which would have heen deemed an impossible low price in former years.“And so the Mediterranean Sea, which geologists tell us was the original waters of the Biblical flood which poured through the Straits of Gibraltar and inundated the then known world, will find many splendid vessels floating upon itz azure expanse this avinter.Eight special Mediterranean cruises have been scheduled and the steamship lines which serve this region are also offering eruises in connection with their regular sailings.“One of the longest of the special cruises to Mediterranean lands will be aboard a ship visiting this part of the world for the first time, and that is the “Statendam.” This 29,500 ton flagship of a well-known Lians- Atlantic line will sail from New York February 9th and take 56 days for a leisurely cruise to most of the important spots of this picturesque region, including, of course, Ezypt and Palestine, also Jugo-Siavia.What is of especial interest is an arrangemé t which has seldom before been ate tempted on a economical cruise of this type, and that is giving its members the choice of going either tourist or first class, with its accompanying wide range in the cost of the cruise.Donald Dilloway has been added to the cast of “Men Must Fight,” which will go into production soon at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios, under direction of while a passenger train roared through.Willimm J.Farley, a resident of Bloomfield avenue, was bringing his train from Labelle to Mile End station. At Val Morin his train was in a siding picking up cars and had started towards the main line. The fireman and a sectionman were im the cab at the time of his death but without a word to either of them Farley assumed his characteristic pose at the throttle heen pronounced extinct by a doctor at Val Morin.Farley had travelled through the mountain district for many years and was well known to she people of the towns and municipalities through which his the tradition that has been the glory and making of the iron trail on this continent since the first rail was laid, THE MONTHLY LEASE There is considerable agitation in Montreal to change the custom ai leasing property for twelve months to the monthly lease system such as that in vogue in Ontario. For some reason that is not clear, the majority of the landlords favour the twelve-month custom. It has been found in Ontario that the monthly lease is a benefit to both landlord and tenant, and the experience has been that there is no more frequent moving than under the twelve month system, and considerable less default. There is in everybody a tendency to put off unpleasant jobs, and this tendency is encouraged under the monthly lease system. No job is more unpleasant than moving, and when a man can move at a month's notice, he is inclined: to postpone the unpleasantess from month to month. The landlord benefits, keeping a good tenant in many cases much longer than he would under the twelve month plan.A long lease scares the average man, makes him bargain for low prices, forces down the general average of rents.not desirable.| vived when children were allowed to anything, The fireman took a contrel oi the Incomotive and’ brought the hody Y EXAM MOVIE SHORTS A short lease ensourages a higher level, for the average man is guite willing to pay well, provided he is no; tied down in case of emergency. When it is considered that in spite of the widespread slump in business, three-quarters of the workers are still in receipt of living incomes, it will be seen that the landlords would not have anything to lose under the shorter rental term.CHILDREN'S MOTION PICTURES The question of again admitting children to motion picture theatres is again very much to the Lee likely, however, that anything will be done, as the average parent does not know what is best for his children in many things, and the authorities have taken their cue from the opinions of the judges in juvenile and other children’s courts.About thirty per cent of pictures are unfit for young children to see, and the theatres have shown no discrimination in separating the suitable from the unsuitable films. It should be an easy matter, however, to arrange for the hoard of censors to distinguish between films suitable for children and those which are unsuitable, and it should be equally easy for the theatres to arrange their programs in such a way that children could be admitted two or three days a week. This would be simpler and probably more successful than trying to have the old caused a slight flurry but it proved to be of slight duration. It is hoped that the incoming Democratic President of the United States, Mr.Roosevelt, will make an agreable change but the outlook on the whole is not at all bright. The war debt question could certainly be handled to have a better effect all around.Canada however is in a favorable position. There has certainly been a remarRable growth of trade during the past century and it is continuing to all reports. On Tuesday evening the Honorable H.H.Stevens, Minister of Trade and Commerce, talked on “Canada’s Rise.in the.World of Commerce.” The minister warned against compiring the immediate present and the immediate past in considering Canada’s position. And this is indeed the way to view the entire situation.A survey of the past century will show that there have been other periods similar to the present one.The fact is also evident that there has always heen a bright period after each dark cloud. The cloud has always passed.Today Canada stands seventh among the trading nations of the world. Her rise as an industrial na tion has.indeed been spectacular. It would indeed average should seek the cause.Under We hear a great deal of talk about “the danger of overweight after forty.” There is also danger in “underweight before thirty,” which should not be forgotten in this age of slenderness. There is no defnite measure of normal weight. We know the average weights for sex, age and height, but averages are not necessarily normals. The long-legged person with a slender frame may be below average weight and still be normal. The average weights are a good.guide, however, quently associated with a run-down physical condition, and underweight is a warning signal of such condition. The younger person who is too thin has less power of resistance.Tuberculosis cannot be cured simply by adding weight to the body, but the chances of developing the disease can he minimized by having the body fortified against the germs of tuberculosis.Resistance can be built up with adequate food, rest, fresh air and sunshine. It is the early aduit years that tuberculosis reaps its largest harvest.Tuberculosis seldom develops in the heaithy-weH-nourished body. The early adult years are particularly trying, for these years bring the physical and mental strain of starting and the individual who is far from the work, of marriage and the beginning physical and mental burdens.Underweight due ‘o disease or æ some abnormal condition of the bodg can be corrected only Ly the removal of the cause.If.there is no disease to gain weight we must eat more focd each day than our body needs, just as when we wish to reduce weight, we must eat less food than our body uses.Ç The person who is underweight needs added rest.He should spend more hours in bed at night, take moon.day rest (if only for ten minutes) and a rest before meals so that he will not take food when his body is fatigued. He should spend as much time as pos sible in the open air and avoid stren- tous exercise.Walking is an excel lent form of exercise for thé person who is underweight as it læeps him out of when Ouimet-Wilson C.sustained defeat by a score of 1-0, Avenue Rink. The return of old man winter and his chilly blasts after two weeks of spring-like weather, was unexpected, but welcomed by local hockeyists and supporters, who crowded the rink side in fairly large numbers on New Year's Day.Rangers were in the spotlight from the outset of their daring comeback for signal honors again this season, hard, defensive playing. The absence from.Rangers of “Stan” Neville, leading.scorer last season and Batson, burly defenceman of the champions, gave spectators a new light on Rangers one.The new right winger has seen plenty of hockey with outside aggregations in past seasons, distinguishing himself greatly as a high scorer. He is a local boy for this reason Rangers pride in having him.By the result of this game, Rangers cannot be credited with more apparent ghut-outs in succeeding games, but show every sign of a renewed spirit among the boys, who in the past three seasons, suffered only four losses.Ouimet-Wilson C.were not without a good hody of supporters on Sunday as they battled Rangers to such a close finish, Lack of co-ordination, in spots left the losers unaware of many breaks, that properly handled wonld have netted one or more counters, Braced by the steady ‘speed of “Stan” Neville, Ouimet’s front Hhe kept up a vigorous rush on the and hard, until Ouimet were forced into the defensive.“Hughie” Claxton handled a score of passes from Durocher and Roseman, piling many a shot into McPhee's mit.Eight minutes of the second set found loth teams struggling for the slightest opening.A few minutes later, Roseman appeared unchecked and broke through Ouimet’s disrupted line for a shot, The dise rose from Rix stick with a flash of bullet-like spged and found an opening Lefore McPhee could clear.Manager Neville later switched his front line for a new series of attacks, leaving more security in his «defence line. His fire of St.Germain’s rugged forwards.His.goal tending was c¢ven more convincing than heretofore expected, in view of the small number of shots that passed in.Incidentally, it would appear its average support on Sunday when Royals battled their way to vie- tory over Red Wings, by a score of 2-1.Following their debut this season, Royals again took on a pair of leading scorers in Griffiths and Cameron and incidentally garnered two tallies: by this choice in Sunday”s game.Cameron scored the winning goals, taking one assist from Griffiths, who today hehooves his chances of not adding at least another couple to this score.J.Richmon peppered a hard one into the Royals net to save his team from whitewash. Both squads were well matched for this game and aside from the
