Westmount 215, P.Q., Thursday, May 8, 1969 { 10¢ Dog's master fined $25 for policeman nipping A dog is not at liberty to defend its masters — or its master’s father's — home in the best way it knows how: with its teeth. And least of all, against a policeman.Yesterday morning in West- mount Municipal Court it cost W.H.Gear, a Hampstead resident, $25 and costs to find this out, at the same time earning from Judge A.McT.Stalker a commendation for the able way in which, despite not being a lawyer.he conducted his own defence.Examiner readers will recall an item a few weeks ago in which Cst.St.Denis of the local force went to a home at 4715 The Boulevard in the course of investigation of a traffic accident and was bitten on the thigh. It didn't end there. The public safety officer was treated at the Montreal General for a wound vhich a doctor testified yesterday was “consistent with a dog bite.” In due course.charge was made against Mr.Gear.owner of a beagle which was in temporary residence at the Boulevard ad- - dress, the home of Mr.Gear's father.William W.Gear.where the dog's master happened also to be visiting — attending a party — at the time in question.Noizy fuss Mr.Gear Senior also has a dog of his own, a boxer. When the doorbell rang, both pets made a noisy fuss, the boxer was relegated inside the inner vestibule door and Mr.Gear Junior grasped his beagle by the collar. This did not prevent the animal.however, from lunging at the policeman. Both the Messrs.Gear did not believe the officer could have been actually bitten: rather, perhaps clawed.Further, the older man testified that St.Denis calmly said he had been bitten rather Charges laid after chase Summonses have been issued.returnable in Westmount Municipal Court next Wednesday.to two south-shore Lafleche residents who last week led Westmount Police a high-speed chase to St.Hyacinthe.(See Examiner.May Last week they received suspended sentences in Montreal Sessions Court for stealing the 1961 Chevrolet in their home town.Now.Denis Sauvé.19.the driver.will face charges here which include driving without a licence.without lights.speeding and passing hrough red traffic lights. His companion was Michel La- .Tiviere 24.In addition to one Westmount cruiser damaged in the chase when it struck the sidewall of the Lafontaine tunnel.it was discovered subsequently that another Westmount Public Safety vehicle.one of the orange-and-black “Hallowe'en wagons.” will require a new engine.burned out in the pursuit. It appears that in some 60.000 miles of slow city cruising the oil rings were not prepared for the strain.“crying out” or making a fuss. The defence also contended that the charge was laid against the wrong man, since the father was the ‘‘keeper’’ of the dog at the time according to the by-law.Judge Stalker did not agree.pointing out that the presence of the real master of the beagle.however temporary.put him in charge.Furthermore, considering the evidence of the doctor.other policemen and circumstances, the judge said he was “satisfied beyond all reasonable doubt that the dog did bite.” And he thought it commendable that a policeman would not cry out.In the course of testimony one exhibit was a veterinarian's certificate that the dog was free of disease symptoms.HE hs So SEE Local thunder probable.80°F ATT NEXT WEEK'S WEATHER By ERIC NEAL May 10to 17 Rain, sleet and gale winds, then improving and much warmer.Killing frosts possible in low lying places, and lower end of sloping gardens.Sunny with some chance of evening thundershowers in the south mid-week.Heavy mountain rains, even some snow for northern counties and the Gulf.Tree-damaging glaze frosts for some places.Bright and very warm to end the week.Heat fogs “ for the Cantons, and morning drizzle in mountains.Temp.range: southern counties, 30 and 75 to Laurentians, 30 and 70°F.; Q.E.H.'s Marden scores interference The Queen Elizabeth Hospi- tai, though just outside the city limits, has a special place in the hearts of many Westmount- ers. Many of us have been its patients. Some of our doctors and nurses labor there and numerous local people serve it in various valuable ways, not least of whom is A.Hollis Marden, 22 Renfrew avenue, its president of some years. At the recent annual meeting Mr.Marden had some pertinent things to say, not confined to the affairs of the Q.E.H.or to hospitals but about some public matters generally which bear underscoring. He takes some hefty swings at government spending priorities which constantly up expenditures and taxes and ‘‘compound the critical fiscal problem which confronts us.” In this respect, Mr.Marden adds, the Federal attitude toward Medicare ‘‘does not make economic sense.a program we obviously cannot afford and which is bound to produce more inflation.” Punching it home, he adds: “I am unalterably opposed to spending our tax dollars to do for the great majority of our citizens what they can do, and would be much better off doing for themselves.” Information is sought on Ben, Wm.Lyman Sir: While studying a number of Montreal businessmen, 1 have found it difficult to obtain information on Benjamin and William Lyman who were prominent industrialists in the nineteenth century.I am anxious to obtain material which will enable me to complete studies of these men for inclusion in a study of Montreal's economic development.I am especially anxious to discover date of birth, date of death, marital status.education.religious affiliation and membership in associations.Any information will be gratefully received and will help to record the career of important Montreal public figures of the last century.G.Tulchinsky Assistant Professer, Department of History Queen's University.Kingston, Ont.= e HON.C.M.DRURY Student power — use it! Montreal, Paris, New York, Berlin, San Francisco, Boston. What do these places connote to the reader?Gaiety, lavishness, excitement. All these and more. But these cities all have something much more tangibly in common one with the other — student unrest.Sir George Williams, La Sorbonne, Columbia, University of Berlin, San Francisco State College, Harvard.Institutions of va- tying repute and with a problem. How to cope with the activist minorities of universities is perhaps the number-one problem for North American society.Because what groups such as the anarchist SDS.(Students for a Democratic Society) are doing to the institutions as we conceive them has terrifying ramifications for’ society as we conceive it.When one considers that the top growth industry today is the knowl- ledge industry and that the greater part of this knowledge is accumulated in universities, one wonders where this will lead us in the end.The paradox of having governments and industry dependent on the products of universities, the members of which (some at least) abhor any such institutions, is frightening indeed.Or is it?Are university graduates by and large of the clean-cut.congenial variety?Well, perhaps not.But neither are the anarchists who, in the manner of the SDS, want to destroy all ‘‘institutions” and begin anew.Their dress, their manner of speaking may be different from the attire and language of students of 10 years ago.But surely this is no precendent for change. What makes it seem so to many is the rate of change. But this is something which affects our whole society.I am fortunate as an MP.to have no less than four universities and colleges within my riding.Earlier in the year.I spoke with a political science class at Sir George Williams University. It was a very worthwhile experience indeed. There was an immediate meeting of the minds. They learned a little about the workings of cabinet and I gainea an insight into their thoughts.Their questions were honest and intelligent.More recently.I was confronted with a group representing the same university (although some may have attended other institutions) who presented non-negoti- able demands that the federal government inquire into the events leading up to the destruction of the university's computer centre and in particular to investigate charges of racial discrimination against a biology lecturer. These two unrelated incidents serve to show that students can LE no more be classified under one heading than can a country’s people. There are activists, there are a few extremists and there are a‘great number of moderates who.are basically concerned with one objective — graduating from their respective universities, presumably more knowledgeable, more mature and a little wiser than they were before they entered col- ege. Many of these students are now seeking summer employment to enable them to carry on with their studies.Ideally they should be able to relate their work to their discipline. But the basic object is to earn the money to pay their tuition fees, room and board.I feel the student summer employment situation is not now much worse than it was last summer. What has aggravated the problem is that violent and vociferous extremist minority. They have both focused the public's attention on student problems generally, including summer employment, and caused a certain backlash among would-be employers by their means of highlighting these problems. This has, of course, resulted in a fear among the great majority of students that their efforts in, and chances of, obtaining summer employment have been diminished. The federal government, tor one, has recently taken a measure to provide more summer jobs for students. The cabinet has issued a directive instructing government departments and agencies to rearrange their priorities within existing manpower and budget allocations so that each will increase its student employment by at least 10 per cent over last summer. This is .a tan gible sign of the government's desire to acknowledge the tremendous potential of the student community, notwithstanding incidents which detract from this view.professional card: Howard society shows drug film here Saturday The John Howard Society of Quebec, a Red Feather Agency, Saturday celebrates its diamond jubilee before the league fixtures commence this Saturday.Westmount Rugger Club proved its scoring ability in its game last week against Ottawa Irish in Ottawa. For the first half Westmount were continually pressing the Irish and scored two fine tries by Tim Crighton and Tim Tatman.the first of which was converted by David Moxey. The score at half time was 8 - 8 although Westmount were then dominating the game.However.early in the second half the club lost its second player to injury and thereafter played 13 against the 15 Irish. The most critical of the two losses was the stand-off.Sam Allison.who had set up both the first- half scores.but was injured while setting up the second. These losses weakened the club's attack and diluted the defence to such an extent that the Irish were able to score 8 more points for a final score of 16-8.Fortunately.none of the injuries was serious.John Runkle and Paul Von Wiese.both City residents and playing their first game for the club.showed great promise.Other club players in action in Ottawa were one for Montreal Selects.and four for Montreal Canadians.against their Ottawa counterparts. The club is especially proud of its large representation on the Canadians team.In the first round of the league fixtures this Saturday.the first team plays Montreal Wanderers at Westmount Athletic Ground (kick-off 2:30) and the second team.TM.R.at
