To many of the province's people, who have not yet enjoyed any of the benefits of the quiet revolution, the idea of living wihout patronage still is foreign and the subtle thought that the return of the By AUSTIN CARR party of Duplessis would mean a return of petty privilege, payoff and preferment undoubtedly was intriguing.Perhaps this is unfair to the dynamic Daniel Johnson. But he has only himself to blame especially among those of us with Anglo-Saxon minds. There is little on record of Mr.Johnson disavowing the excesses and undesirable traits of Maurice L.Duplessis.Perhaps the Duplessis influence is not what it was; but we may be forgiven for believing that the spirit of ‘le chef’’ lives on, if not in Mr.Johnson himself then among many of his followers.By ignoring the basic traits of his compatriots, Mr.Le- sage perhaps spelt his own doom. The same right-thinking led him to concentrate his appeal more on the densely populated urban areas than in the countryside where Mr.Johnson was so effecitve, Mr.Johnson was the more practical politician and this will be shown to Mr.Lesage in his analysis of the election results.MODERN LIFE’'S NEEDS City folk will be forgiven for having seen in Mr.Lesage a natural leader. All around us we have evidence of ambitious development and spending of public money where badly needed — that is, in the eyes of city dwellers: new roads and highways, bridges, public buildings, social welfare developments of all kinds including hospitalization and, perhaps most important of all, a revolution of the educational system of the province.: Biography Clarke avenue of Streets Through the account given by Washington Irving’s “Astoria” we have followed John Clarke, whose family lived on what is now Clarke avenue, in his expedition across the continent to Astoria, the settlement founded by John Jacob Astor in 1810.The War of 1812 Was in the making when John Clarke left Astoria with others in his party to obtain pelts from the Indians of the Columbia Valley, The story continues: “Mr.Clarke, another partner, conducted his little band up Lewis River to the mouth of a small stream coming in from the north, to which the Canadians gave the name of the Pavion. Here he found a village or encampment of forty huts or tents, covered with mats and inhabited by Nez Perces, or pierced-nose Indians, as they called themselves. In these migrations they were liable to be waylaid and attacked by the Blackfeet, and other warlike tribes, and driven back across the mountains, with the loss of their homes and many of their comrades.“A life of this unsettled and precarious kind is apt to render men selfish, and such Clarke found the inhabitants of this village, who were deficient in usual hospitality of Indians, parting with everything with extreme reluctance, and showing no sensibility to any act of kindness, At the time of his arrival they were all occupied in catching and curing salmon, The men were stout, robust and active and the women handsomer than those of the tribes closer to the coast, “It was the plan of Clarke, to lay up his boats here, and proceed by land to his place of destination, which was among the Spokane tribe of Indians, about one hundred and fifty miles distant. He accordingly endeavored to purchase horses for the journey, but in this he had to contend with the (Continued on page 18) Amis These things are all naturally more meaningful to city people who so much more quickly discover the needs of modern life than do their country cousins. What have we, then?Added to the frictions which naturally arise between French and English are we now to have superimposed another factional split represented by city folk versus country folk?Mr.Johnson is not going to have it so much his own way, being elected by a very marrow margin, that he ean ignore the city elector. He is going to have to create a new dialogue, this time between urban and rural dweller.Re-run of 1944 Sunday’s election across the province, and in West- mount, was almest a re-run of the provincial election of 1944, when the late Hon.Maurice L.Duplessis won power with a majerity of three seats — a power he held till his death in ’59.In Westmount on August 8, 1944, the voters went to the polls and cast 14,613 ballots for Hon.George Marler, who was to become the interim leader of the Liberal Opposition in the Legislature, and later te leave the provincial field and become Federal Transport Minister.Running against Mr.Marler in 1944 as a National Union candidate was Charles Petrie who rolled up 1,384 votes, and Kenneth Lyall, an “Army” candidate as he styled himself, who polled 1,398.While there was no candidate in Westmount, the Bloc Populaire was the nationalist party of the time, and they failed miserably at the polls. It was a time of strikes, too, and from the files we note an advertisement from the Montreal Tramways Company, relating that its services had been strikebound three times in 17 months.CROSSWORD PUZZLE AGROSS ¥1.Logan or 1.Polish Fitzgerald 8.Celebration 52.Observes 9.Thinner DOWN 10.Market 1.Having place in two horns Ancient 2.One: comb.Greece form 12.Berries or 8.Seat for grapes the un- 18.Spring- committed, blooming roverbially plant 4.Tuck or 14, See! linen, bedding, china; and cutlery; a grandfather clock: books in the library; one canopy bed: and two pre- Boer War wash basins, absolutely useless but still standing up.Our master bedroom is enormous, at least to us, and in cach corner near the ceiling, is a plaster angel, hovering as we sleep.Off this bedroom is a large bright annex overlooking the garden and meadow beyond.Things Happen In this commodious abode two English aunts, dear old ladies, aged 82 and 84 visited us for about two weeks, which passed without any hitches whatever, except for one day at noon, when several things happened at once.Aunt 84 had a mild heart attack and was confined to bed for a few days.At lunchtime Aunt 82 offered to carry up the tray, which she did, one hand on the bannister, the other holding the tray.In the garden, Pussy, the cat, climbed up a tree and for some reason annoyed Bobby, the dog.who began to bark incessantly, This upset our little boy, Ted, who cried.and my wife, Esther, emerged from the kitchen, a frying pan in one hand and a Dream house — $85 a month by Stephen Schofield dish towel in the other, and told him sharply, “Teddy, you be quiet!” This was futile.“Waaah.waaah.’ Teddy wailed. Our bedtray is one of those Canadian (rays, little used in England, which have four legs.In placing the tray on the bed, Aunt 82 forgot about the legs, which caught on the bedcover and caused the fish and fried potatoes to slide off the (tray.together with an upset teapot and a pat of melting butter.all merging in a slew on the ciderdown.Poor Pussy In the garden the cat would nol budge from the tree nor could Bobby be dissuaded from barking: and Elaine.our little girl, fell into chorus with Ted.both of them in tears, “Poor Pussy.so frightened up there,” Elaine sobbed. At this stage, Aunt 82, having scooped up the fish and butler as best she could, and replaced it on the tray, descended the staircase very slowly. She alighted safely on the ground floor and entered the dining room, explaining the cause of the goulash on the tray.Carefully she set the tray on the sideboard, again forgetting the legs, so the pile of tea leaves and fish and butter took another slither, this time to the floor .Perfect But what of this house as a home? The high mantle and huge fireplace and railing around the hearth, a solid brass railing so wide and strong that four people can sit on it comfortably?Unique and inimitable in North America, it is a house in which some Westmount ladies dream about serving coffee and liqueur around a crackling fire, Regency furnishings and somewhat pretentious, though faded décor.while the gentlemen linger over port and cigars by another fire in the dining room. For that it is perfect. To be honest 1 prefer bacon and eggs and two big cups of coffee in a quiet restaurant, and to let someone else do the dishes.Although IT am a whizz of a dishwasher, my wife and 1 require more than an hour to clear up after one of these parties; and we seem to subsist on trifle and remnants for the rest of the week.Gin The house camnot be heated with four heaters and two fires which are most arduous to maintain. This is nothing to the English who possess an innate mixture of gin in their blood which renders them impervious to cold.‘ Night after night I heave my piano, a £5 bargain, to within six feet of the fire, and even then, while my back is hot the keys feel like repres- sible ice cubes and my fingers will not flex. The house is a sieve. The English know nothing about insulation.Insulation?Through the floor of our bedroom the wind whistles up almost enough to extinguish a candle. How the wind reaches the middle of the bedroom floor, I have no idea. The fact is that it does.I bought pounds of oakum and stuffed it in the cracks as I did for a friend who built a log cabin near Ste.Agathe des Monts, Que.only here the cracks require more oakum.1 used enough oakum for the poop of a galleon, Quebec My wife bought a huge sec- ond-hand rug, moth-eaten but thick, which covers the whole floor and the oakum-filled cracks, and still the room feels like an igloo, and the angels remind me of effigies in ice al Quebec. To clean {he leaded windows, 20 panes each.some of them Tudor, some Jacobean, and some post-the Battle of Hastings, requires a full day.To clean the whole house is impossible.Lizards inhabit the cellar and a corner of one of the washrooms. The larder is a shelf and recess half-way down the cellar stairs.Once Esther asked Teddy to fetch something in the larder.“No!” he said.“I won't go down there. There are alligators on the floor!” At five years of age, perhaps the disparity can be excused: they were lizards, not alligators.Trumpets Sound From the kitchen through the dining room and out the Queen Aune door and across the garden and driveway to the garage, to the garbage cans, is, or certainly seems to be.about one-eighth of a mile, and at night a flashlight is vital. The kitchen, which used to be a flower-room, is the size of a commodious cupboard; the frig has to be placed in the dining-room.The mattress on the canopy bed is better.though not much, than that of a dosshouse, which I have in fact slept on in East London. The attic, provocative of Dickens and Oliver Twist.also resembles the rear of a pawn shop. The whole house I would not accept as a giit. That glorious day last spring when we moved out I could hear the trumpets sounding all over Surrey, Dear Folks, May | thank the 1385 voters who cast their ballots for my five point programme, i.e.1.OUTSPOKEN REPRESENTATION - 2.McGILL LOYOLA 3.4.>.when advised b girls, Loyola Co BURSARIES REPRESENTATION DO YOU NOT THINK THAT THE COUNTY AN ENVIABLE POSITION IN PROVINCIAL CIRCLES TODAY IF | HAD WON?May | also thank the group who signed my nomination papers — the volunteer supporters and that wonderful group of junior resident workers with the experience of one election under their belts will be able to take on any paid political machine in six months’ time. They did not quit working for our platform the whispering committees that, if they were good boys and ege would get its University Charter and certain institutions in our Riding would benefit in the near future and lastly our former Premier hammering out non-recognition of Independents.Did you hear him on Sunday evening Folks, counting on the support of the Independents?Summing up, is it any wonder that there were no congratulations extended to anyone! P.S.My Next Campaign is starting as of now.TO THE VOTERS OF WESTMOUNT COUNTY Province.== Continued dialogue on the necessary grants to McGill University.== University status for Loyola College.== Fairer distribution of educational bursaries.English-speaking = Provincial Government Boards.OF WESTMOUNT WOULD BE IN Proportional Yours sincerely, John H.Dunne INDEPENDENT Outspoken representation for the County of West.mount — one of the most important Ridings in the representation on "]
