once by a woman who gave up after three months; again by a man who spent far too little time on research and consequently bungled it.American movie magnates have tried to buy her story and have been rejected for good reasons: they will not stick to the truth and want to insert artificial romance. The single chapters about her that have been published in some books are brief and often inaccurate. One, written by an American, is mostly nonsense, Her story requires collated evidence from at least 100 people of at least six nationalities in Africa, Europe and England.Of these I have interviewed about 50 of four nationalities. As my files begin to grow the search narrows chiefly to “Sidney,” her greatest friend and confidante, who adored her as she indeed adored him.He is a virile man of striking appearance and also extremely brave. To find him required months, for he moves through England and the U.S.and Europe like a rabbit, Very Cordial I spend a few evenings with Sidney, who is very cordial and tells his friends who knew Susan to give me what they can, and they do so.And Sidney draws up an agreement with his lawyer and sends it to mine.Although about 99 other people are involved, these 99 together could contribute, roughly, only about one-quarter of the whole stery.Roughly three-quarters of the story is known only to Sidney, who accompanied Susan during almost all of her tumultuous years.Sidney's agreement offers me all book rights in all countries.1 agree. He wants all film and television rights.I agree.(He is supplying about three-quarters of the story). He wants editorial control of the manuscript: the right to delete what he believes should be deleted. To this I cannot agree. Why Not?Why not?In The White Cliffs of Dover, Alice Duer Miller describes England thus: “I am American bred; “I have seen much to hate here — much to forgive, “But in a world where England is finished and dead, “I do not wish to live.” The phrase is perfectly true and balanced.Delete “much to hate here — much to forgive,” and the balance and cogeney wither. When Lin Yutang first wrote My Country And My People, the politicians upbraided him for exposing their foibles and shortcomings. You should have omitted these, they told him, then your book would have been excellent -propaganda.Politicians are so stupid, Lin replied, they do not understand that the very color and balance of any work requires the good and the bad.A man’s biography written by a wife or son is invariably lopsided and dull.Ideally, a book on a battle should be written, not by a participant on either side, but by a neutral person collating equal evidence from both sides.A person appears differently to different people.A woman appears best to the man who loves her, a view that should be (Continued on page 15) Let our experts handle the job, specialists in REROOFING SHEET METAL BRICK REPAIRS Call NOW for free estimates WESTMOUNT PLUMBING & ROOFING LTD.206 OLIVIER AVE.Westmount WE.5-1189 rer & permanent roof, fire-proof, coolness in summer, comfort in winter nan 206 Olivier Ave.a = 4 3 JARS) o 3 & [IRL omit nés ä ae Tin | JE PER Re Authorized Dealer Westmount Plumbing & Roofing Ltd.Westmount — WE.5.1189 SAS EEE EAN S / / IR Eee A LTD.I ry TES Fra WATCH REPAIRS ESTABLISHED 1899 5 Certified Watchmakers OHMAN”S JEWELLERS NEED A (AB! associations. It has been demolished, bul the Clarke name is respected as the oldest of the founders of the English - speaking community.Nor is this respect confined to Westmount; it is shown by all who know their Ild Montreal.Veneration, indeed, is due Mrs, John Clarke, for she attained the age of 104 years, bright, clear-minded, and full of reminiscences of her youth and of the interesting past of Montreal life and society. In the present little book her daughter, Migs Adele, offers a few gleanings from that past, which will _|be, no doubt, accepted by her many friends in the spirit that it is written.Miss Clarke, speaking of her father, John Clarke, states (1906) that: Left Home “He was born in the year 1781 of Simon and Ann Waldorf Clarke, in the frame home, home, which once stood at the corner of Clarke and Cote St.Ontoine.This house was built by his father, Simon Clarke, and at the time it was destroyed it was probably 150 years old.He was one of a large family, and at the age of 18, left home for the Northwest, to join those who were opening up and exploring the country, for the purpose of establishing fur-trading stations.Bryce, in his early history of the Hudson's Bay Company, gives the following account of an exploit of his when ‘he was about 19 years of age: ‘Northward, the course of the fur - traders’ empire has continually made its way.Leaving Great Slave Lake, four years before the close of the century, along the course of Alexander Mackenzie's earlier exploration, Duncan Livingstone, a North- West Company trader, built the first fort on the river, eighty miles north of the lake.Three years later, the trader, his three French-Canadian voyageurs, and Indian interpreterè were basely killed by the Eskimos on the lower Mackenzie River.A year or two afterwards, a party of fur-traders under John Clarke, started on an expedition of exploration and retaliation down the river, but again the fury of the Eskimoss was aroused. In truth, if it had not been for a storm of fair wind that favored them, the traders would not have escaped with their lives.By this it was evident that he was even then unconsciously preparing himself for the task that was to be his, of joining in one of the most romantic and interesting expeditions and projects of that period. Before the year 1805 that part of the country west of the Rocky Mountains was, practical- lyunknown country. In that year, however, two Americans, Lewis and Clark, were sent out by the American Government to explore the Missouri, and if possible, find the source of the Mississippi. The story of the expedition is well known. They did not discover the source of the Mississippi, nor was it discovered until later, but they penetrated into the new western country of the Rocky Mountain regions. There existed, at the time, an “American Fur Company,” which was dependent to a con- ‘siderable extent upon its trade and friendship.with the North- West Company.John Astor, when the maps and charts of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and their reports, were made known, conceived the idea of forming the Astor Fur Company and of sending out parties to establish trading posts up the Missouri River, across the Rockies to the Columbia River on the Pacific Coast. This plan he proceeded to carry out and on September 8, 1810, sent out his fist ship, the “Tonguin.” Many Canadian voyageurs, young men looking for adventure, and some of the North- West Company, who risked themselves in Astor's Pacific enterprise, helped to make up his first party. The arduous journey of this party and of the subsequent founding of Astoria, are fully described in Irving's, “History of Astoria”.There were, naturally, in connection with this enterprise, many difficulties and discou- agements, as a result of which Astor sent forth a second party in the ship “Beaver,” on October 10, 1811.Astor's partner in this second party was John Clarke who at the time must have been about 29-years-of-age.Continued next week Letters All letters to the editor must bear the name of the sender, If the sender desires not to have his name Sparrow managed with their housekeeping duties one summer still remains a mystery. For years they had built on a balsam tree close to our summer cottage.Their favorite branch pointed towards the steps, and as we passed up or down we could see the tiny, neat cup and kept track of their household problems. But that special neddic FIX IT.3 O.heaters all Without exception summer they chose a branch which, although quite near the usual spot, was invisible because a branch just above rested right on top, the needles of the two intertwining.Nevertheless, the birds went in and out.Mr.and Mrs.Chippy are so similar that we never knew which one was popping in or out. They are small brown-back- ed birds (the size of a Warbler) with rusty caps, a dark line through the eye and a white eyebrow.Their underside is light grey.It always took them about a week to build their neat little cupshaped nest with old gress and fine rootlets, In the days of horses Chipping Sparrows used hair from their manes and tails for a lining; later they had to find hair from other animals.Early Hatch Then for four days in succession a tiny blue-green egg with brown speckles at the large end was laid.We always looked into the nest in the morning to see how matters progressed. After that we seldom saw anything but a Chipping Sparrow, because one of the parents always sat covering the eggs. But it took a week.and Advisor Dr.Saly).“1 would like to have recognized a few of the student leaders. All activities fall under the control of the Student Council led by President Wayne Barrow, Vice- President Janet Lorimer, Treasurer Cathy Michell.Would these three please stand.Major responsibilities for the school annual, The Vox Ducum, were assumed by editor Jaclyn Snyder and Business Managers Stephan Kaplan and Jonathan Miller, while Tony Usher piloted the school newspaper.Dramatics have played an important part in the life of this class, beginning with The Student Prince and the Century program.Yohanan Herson, President of the Theatre Club is from Grade X.John Wood and Joanna Symonds guided the Boys Athletics and the Girls Athletic Association, 1 would ask them to stand. The senior boys made an excellent showing in basketball, lost the city championship in football by one point, and won the city championship in hockey.Voted by their teammates as outstanding players of the year were: — Football: Jay Garland: Basketball: Victor Alleyne; and Hockey: Victor Vickers.RETIREMENT “Graduating to well deserved retirement this year are three senior teachers who have done a great deal ending with this year's Turn of pupils.Mr.Angus Bernard, Head of the English Department, retires after 23 years of instilling a love of English in Westmount students.Recognized as a master teacher he was recently honoured by the Old Boys Association who have created the Angus Bernard medal to be awarded annually to the boy who scores highest in English, Miss Agnes Ross has been one of the main pillars of the French De- (Continued on page 7) Nightly 8:45 except Mondoy seventh week SOFT VOICES by Aviva Ravel A Drama of Women in Conflict Directed by: Paul Brennan Performed by: Mighon Elkins and Irene Balser LE THEATRE DE LA = NATE a Reservations: 861-6665 Reduced rates for groups and students for Westmount | Held over until June 4th.FROM $1.25 6107 SHERBROOKE W.LAWN MOWER SHARPENING ALL GARDEN NEEDS, ROTOTILLERS, ROLLERS, ETC.ON RENTAL FROM HU.2-2323 ALL RENT HU.2.2323 MAXIMUM $3.95 — Facing Kent Theotre TO: 393 ST.JAMES VE Crown Trust COMPANY GUARANTEED TRUST INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES 67 NAME.sorsvenvacnssesesssuse PLEASE PRINT You will be interested in the interest on = = Term, 4 and 5 years Telephone 842-8362 or clip coupon below for descriptive folder 69 Years of Personal Service CU PE DE PR PU GE Sm fe GE Gee SES Se SE Cu fm Aa Seg Sa hey SE SO WU ES OF CROWN TRUST COMPANY STREET WEST MONTREAL Gentlemen: Please send me your free folder describing GUARANTEED TRUST INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES, I understand | will be under no obligation.ADDRESS.onavanususcnasconncnencooso0nocooh00DAUAGAGO00060 CITY.sssousonuonseusencenonno0000 0 PROVINCE.san souon0a000 - Wesimount High….(Continued from page 6) partment for 17 years.West- mount High's excellent record in French has been in no small measure due to her efforts.Public speaking, dramatics and Red Cross are among the many activities she has helped with in the school. In Miss Pearl Gallant we lose a teacher who has a remarkable gift for obtaining the best out of overy pupil.Setting high standards, yet with inexhaustible patience she sends out each year from our Commercial Department graduates who have earned an excellent reputation in the business world.I would ask these three exceptionally fine teachers to stand for a moment and be recognized.“It is appropriate at this time to thank the several public bodies who help the school in a variety of ways:— (1) The West- mount Board and Greater Board who provide us with our present facilities and staff.(2) the city for its excellently maintained playing fields and rink.(3) The Home and School Association for the ‘opportunities to familiarize parents with school policies, for its staff tea, for prizes, for arranging accident insurance and for helping the staff at special meetings of parents. The W.H.S.Alumnae for a very valuable group of scholarships, for conducting the annual Public Speaking Contest and for the Award of Honour.(5) The W.H.S.Old Boys’ Association for a scholarship, for organizing a Career Conference Day and the voting for the Award of Honour.Through annual social events both groups contribute greatly to the spirit of Westmount High.Over 400 old boys attended this year's annual banquet, thanks in large measure to Mr.Newman.Nez Wl: .NOW, enjoy Ruby Foo's famous Chinese food at home, at less than menu prices — thanks to Ruby Foo's special new freezing process.Stock your home freezer with your favourite dishes.Great for the country place, too !
