[" Ce 2ND LANDOWNER WANTS ‘OUT’ + The Upper House of the Quebec Legislature is balancing a delicate problem over the weekend — one tossed there by a lawyer representing a Westmount family seeking to be treated in the same manner as a neighbor in land transactions with the City of Westmount.Back on May 8 in a letter to The Examiner.Richard Gaunt stated that the city was about to take his father's property, although the land was not wanted for city improvement but for resale to a third party. The first he had heard from the city, he wrote.was an order to ‘get out’.Subsequently, through the efforts of Emmett Kierans.a lawyer.who took a case for the Gaunt interests before the legislature.a bill about to go through the legislature was held up and reprinted in such manner so as to exempt the Gaunt property At this time the principle was established that the city did not have the right to take over the property of a citizen and resell it at a profit. In the redrafted bill.exempting the Gaunt property.the wording of the new bill was altered so as to give vesale right to the city on the portions not Examiner NY "XY XY XX XXXVit, No.29 VOL.MONTREAL, FRIDAY, JULY 17th, 1964 5 CENTS 12 PAGES exempt.Now.Peter J.Usher QC.representing the Quigley family interests has gone before the Legislature and argued that his client should be treated in a manner exactly similar to that of the Gaunt family — since the properties are adjacent in the land under discussion — the arca bounded by Hallowell, Dorchester.Greene and St.Catherine.Before the Assembly, Mr.Usher found himself opposed.chiefly by Minister of Municipal Affairs Pierre Laporte.who said.in effect, ‘we have dealt with the matter, and that’s it.” | Then Mr.Usher went before the Legislative R t h t Council, and in an hour and a half plea.asked that his client be treated similarly to the Gaunt interests, that an exemption be made in the Quigley case.Members of Westmount Rotary Club were taken back to the days of T | youth at Wednesday's regular weekly luncheon-meeting at Victoria Hall — by George He has asked what use is to be made of the land.Mr.Usher says, and has not been able to get Beers, executive director of the new Boy-Scouts-sponsored magazine for boys.titled | simply ‘Canadian Boy’.! the true purpose of Boys’ Club’ work.Originally, the Boys’ Club opened its doors with the basic purpose of getting the youth from the streets into areas where their development could have more promising results. The Unity Boys’ Club of Westmount came into being via this purpose in 1949.Since that time.however.the purpose has expanded along with the membership.Today, the know what to expect when they enter the club and in involves a great deal more than just having and acceptable place to ‘horse’ around. After fifteen years of operation Boys’ Club personnel have learned how to assure, to a greater degree, the proper development of club members.Too few people realize the advancements that have boosted Boys’ Club work to the status of, ‘Professional’.How many people realize, for instance, that a Boys’ Club worker .requires four years of university, a similar period of field work experience and this, along with constant screening and appraisal. One speaks in error then, when one refers to a Boys’ Worker as a supervisor, as if his job was merely to observe or to discipline.Today, a Boys’ Worker is an educator in the truest sense of the word. The youth are still coming in off the streets, but now are taking part in professionally organized programs, using fully equipped facilities and being cared for by properly trained personnel.ACTIVITIES Highlights of next week's program include an afternoon of bowling at Rosebowl Lanes, (Tuesday.1 p.m.).a day at St.Helen's Island, (Wednesday).and a trip to the Montreal Gazette Thursday.Attendance at games room activities at the club has hardly dropped off at all.‘This due to the fine job done by Tom Stevens on several new games, Girl’s Worker.Tori Schrammel was just as surprised as the rest of us, at how well her first Arts and Crafts class worked out. They have a whale of a time in the library every Monday and Friday.Boys' Worker, Carl Tremblay will soon be conducting regular football practices, (August 17), but is busy now on Thursday with \\ a girl’s hike mornings and a boy’s hike afternoons.Club Director.Maurice Maria- sine is off to Calgary for the first portion of his vacation. The stampede to the club continues, however.GREENER PASTURES Unfortunately, there are all too many of our high school graduates who go to Upper Canada, the west or the U.S.A.to find the fame and fortune most youngsters envisage as their right, Yet times here are improving and as our area becomes more and more industrialized, the jobs here are becoming more plentiful' and better.— Campbellton (N.B.)
